The Los Angeles Dodgers are in the thick of NL West race thanks to a remarkable divisional record. Other games have been another story for the Dodgers, especially against teams from the NL East. Los Angeles again tries to shake its struggles against the East and avoid losing four straight to the Florida Marlins for the first time in a single season Tuesday night. After going a franchise-worst 4-11 in interleague play, the Dodgers gladly resumed the NL portion of their schedule with a trip to San Francisco and Arizona. Los Angeles won five of six against those division rivals to move to 23-6 against the West, the best record for any major league team within its division. Just as the Dodgers seemed to be getting back on track, a 6-5 loss to the Marlins in Monday’s series opener dropped them four games behind first-place San Diego. Los Angeles fell to 4-10 against opponents from the NL East.

The Dodgers rank second in the NL in both batting average and runs per game, but are hitting .241 and averaging 3.7 runs against the East. After winning the opener of the season series, they’ve lost three straight to the Marlins - all by one-run margins. Vicente Padilla, coming off his best outing of his season, will try to help Los Angeles overcome its struggles against the East when he takes the ball Tuesday. Padilla gave up one run and three hits in seven innings of Wednesday’s 8-2 win over the Giants, his 100th career victory. The 11-year veteran threw 98 pitches in his third start after missing nearly two months with a sore right forearm. Padilla feels like he’s approaching the same consistency he showed down the stretch last year for the Dodgers. The right-hander went 4-0 with a 3.20 ERA in eight games for Los Angeles over the final 5 1/2 weeks of the 2009 regular season, and 1-1 with a 3.63 ERA in three playoff starts.

With Zack Greinke recapturing his Cy Young form, the Kansas City Royals are playing better baseball these days. Greinke looks to extend his personal winning streak to four while the Royals seek a fifth victory in six games Tuesday when they continue their visit to the Seattle Mariners, the last-place club in the AL West. Kansas City has won eight of 11, batting .327 with runners in scoring position in that stretch. The Royals went 4 for 11 in RBI situations during Monday’s 6-4, 10-inning win over Seattle to open this three-game set. The Royals’ strong stretch also coincides with the resurgence of Greinke, who is 3-0 with a 3.66 ERA in his last four starts after going 1-8 with a 4.05 ERA in his first 13. Improved offense has aided the reigning AL Cy Young winner, who’s received 22 total runs of support in his last four outings to match the total from his first 13.

Greinke yielded one run in the first seven innings Wednesday before getting tagged for five in the eighth, but still eked out a 7-6 win over the Chicago White Sox. Greinke has had little trouble in seven starts against the Mariners, going 3-0 with a 1.44 ERA and two complete-game victories at Safeco Field, including a one-hitter last Aug. 30. He threw seven shutout innings at home against Seattle on April 27, but didn’t get a decision in the Royals’ 3-2 victory. The Mariners had expected to welcome Erik Bedard back to the rotation Tuesday, but he has been scratched from his anticipated season debut after suffering shoulder soreness during his last bullpen session. His return from a second shoulder surgery in as many years is now uncertain. Instead of Bedard, Wakamatsu will hand the ball to Ryan Rowland-Smith. The Mariners have lost eight of his last nine starts. The left-hander may not have many chances left to prove he deserves a spot in the rotation. He made a solid case during Thursday’s 4-2 loss to the New York Yankees, yielding two runs in six innings.
