Just when the Detroit Red Wings thought they turned their season around, they struggle to find the net and lose four of five. Facing Miikka Kiprusoff and the Calgary Flames might extend those offensive woes. The slumping Red Wings will try to avoid their first four-game losing streak at Joe Louis Arena in almost two years Friday night when they face the Flames.

Detroit (11-8-4) opened the season by losing six of nine (3-4-2), but rebounded by going 7-1-1 - including a 3-1 win at Calgary on Oct. 31 - and were in position to pull within a point of Central Division-leading Chicago. However, their recent slump has dropped the Red Wings into fourth place, eight points behind the Blackhawks for first as they try to win a ninth consecutive division title. Detroit’s scoring problems were evident in Wednesday’s 2-0 loss to Atlanta, getting shut out for the first time this season despite taking 40 shots. The Red Wings have only one goal in their last eight periods and have scored once on 80 shots in their last two games at Joe Louis Arena.

Detroit is trying to avoid losing four in a row at home for the first time since Feb. 7-29, 2008. Henrik Zetterberg leads the Wings with nine goals and 24 points, but has struggled to find the net recently. The 2008 Conn Smythe Trophy winner has been held to one assist over the last four games. He has nine goals and six assists in 12 home meetings with the Flames (14-6-3).

If Marion Hossa’s first game is any indication, the Chicago Blackhawks appear to be a legitimate contender for their first Stanley Cup in nearly 50 years. Hossa looks to build on an impressive season debut and help the Blackhawks win their ninth in a row Friday afternoon when they visit the Anaheim Ducks. Hossa signed a 12-year, $62.8 million contract with Chicago (16-5-2) in July but missed the first 7 1/2 weeks of the season while recovering from right shoulder surgery.

The Central Division-leading Blackhawks had been doing just fine without their prized free-agent acquisition, but gladly welcomed Hossa to the mix Wednesday against Western Conference-leading San Jose. The four-time All-Star scored twice in helping Chicago to a 7-2 victory, the team’s eighth in a row and fourth on a six-game road trip.

The Blackhawks, who haven’t won the Cup since 1961, weren’t expected to win as easily as they did, either. Chicago had three short-handed goals, matching a franchise record, and kept the high-powered Sharks off the scoreboard until 3:43 left in the game. The Blackhawks have 34 goals during their streak, their longest since winning nine in a row from Dec. 7-28, and have tallied at least five scores in three of their last four.

Sidney Crosby is arguably the best player in the NHL, but even he needs some assistance. Evgeni Malkin’s return from a shoulder injury has provided exactly what he was lacking. Looking to continue their dominance of the New York Islanders, Crosby and the Penguins seek their fourth straight victory when the teams meet Friday afternoon at Nassau Coliseum.

Malkin missed seven straight games earlier this month to recover from a nagging shoulder injury, and the Penguins (17-8-0) struggled to a 2-5-0 mark during that span, managing one total goal in the final three contests. His absence was particularly hard on Crosby, who was limited to one goal and two assists in those seven games, including a career-worst five-game pointless drought. Malkin returned Nov. 14 and combined with Crosby for a goal and five assists in a 6-5 overtime victory over Boston. Crosby has three goals and six assists in his last seven games - six with Malkin in the lineup.

The Pittsburgh captain had another productive game Wednesday night, tallying a goal and an assist in a 3-1 victory over visiting Montreal. Bill Guerin and Sergei Gonchar also scored for the Penguins, winners of five of six since a season-high four-game skid. With their league-leading 17th victory, the Penguins matched a franchise record for most wins in their first 25 games. The only other seasons they won 17 of their first 25 were 1995-96 (17-5-3) and 1994-95 (17-6-2), when there were tie games.

The Colorado Avalanche haven’t been happy with their defensive play recently, especially the breakdowns while short-handed. They were just as frustrated at the end of their last game against the Minnesota Wild. The slumping Avalanche visit Minnesota on Friday in the opener of a home-and-home series against the Wild.Colorado (14-7-4) had one of the NHL’s stingiest defenses in October when the Northwest Division leaders went 10-1-2 to start the month while giving up an average of 2.2 goals. In recent weeks, though, the Avalanche have struggled to limit opponents, losing six of eight (2-4-2) while allowing 4.8 goals per game.

Colorado lost for the third time in four contests Wednesday night, falling 4-3 in overtime to red-hot Nashville. The Avalanche scored three times in the second to overcome a 2-0 deficit, but the Predators tallied a power-play goal late in the period and netted the game-winner 3:07 into the extra session. Colorado has given up six power-play goals over the last four games, killing nine short-handed situations in that span. It began the season allowing 15 power-play goals in 90 opportunities.

Colorado’s recent trips to the Xcel Energy Center haven’t gone well, however. Its 1-4-4 in the last nine trips, scoring two or fewer goals in eight of those contests, including a 3-2 shootout loss in St. Paul on Oct. 21. The Avalanche gave up two power-play goals in that game, including a tying score late in the third period.
