As one of the league’s most successful interleague teams in recent seasons, the Minnesota Twins haven’t lost three straight against the NL in more than three years. It’s been much longer since they’ve been swept by an NL club. The Twins will try to avoid their first interleague sweep since 2001 when they close a three-game set against the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday. From 2001-09, Minnesota boasted a major league-best 101-61 interleague record. It’s had some trouble this year, though, dropping to 7-7 after a 5-3 loss to Milwaukee on Wednesday. The Twins, who lost the series opener 7-5, are now trying to avoid losing three straight against the NL for the first time since May 20-June 9, 2007, and their first three-game interleague sweep since July 15-17, 2001, at St. Louis. While Minnesota is 9-11 in June, it still has a 1 1/2-game AL Central lead over second-place Detroit. Perhaps no one exemplifies Minnesota’s struggles in June more than Nick Blackburn, who has a 12.00 ERA this month and is coming off the second-shortest start of his career.

Blackburn gave up eight runs and six hits in 1 2-3 innings of a 9-5 loss to the Phillies on Friday. Minnesota is 0-4 in the right-hander’s starts this month, in which he’s pitched a total of 15 innings. Blackburn pitched one of his better games against the Brewers on May 21, allowing three runs and seven hits in 7 1-3 innings of a 15-3 home win. Brewers slugger Ryan Braun is 6 for 10 with three doubles off Blackburn. The left fielder was 0 for 4 Wednesday after hitting .389 the previous nine games, although he hit into a fielder’s choice in the seventh to score Rickie Weeks, giving Milwaukee a 4-2 lead. The Brewers, who have already clinched the season series against Minnesota after losing the previous five between these teams, will try to match their longest winning streak of the season - set April 18-22 - when they go for a fourth straight victory Thursday.

The last time Cliff Lee earned a complete-game victory for the Seattle Mariners, Felix Hernandez followed with one of his own. Hernandez has a chance to do it again, help the Mariners extend their winning streak to seven and complete a sweep of the Chicago Cubs on Thursday at Safeco Field. Lee threw a six-hitter to beat Cincinnati 1-0 last Friday. Hernandez followed with a five-hitter Saturday in a 5-1 win over the Reds. After Lee tossed a nine-hitter in an 8-1 win over Chicago on Tuesday, Hernandez hopes to again help the Mariners continue their recent dominance on the mound. Seattle’s starters have allowed three runs while striking out 38 batters in 47 2-3 innings during the six-game winning streak. The Mariners are trying to win seven in a row for the first time since an eight-game run June 23-July 1, 2007. Hernandez is 2-0 with a 1.53 ERA since giving up seven runs in six innings of a 7-1 loss at Texas on June 8. He’s pitched into the eighth inning in four of his last five outings.

Making his first appearance against the Cubs, the right-hander is 10-4 with a 2.89 ERA in 18 interleague starts. He is 2-1 with a 1.82 ERA against the NL this season. Rookie Michael Saunders homered and drove in four runs while Ichiro Suzuki added two RBIs on Wednesday as the Mariners matched the run total from their previous three games. Batting .339 during interleague play this season, Suzuki is hitting .375 in last six games versus the Cubs. He’s 10 for 32 against Chicago’s scheduled starter Ted Lilly. After taking a no-hitter into the ninth inning against the White Sox in his previous start, Lilly allowed eight runs in 5 1-3 innings of a 12-0 loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday. The left-hander is 4-6 with a 6.03 ERA in 13 starts versus the Mariners, but has not faced them since 2006. Chicago rookie outfielder Tyler Colvin snapped a 24-inning scoreless stretch for Seattle’s pitching staff with a home run in the second inning Wednesday. However, the Cubs went 1 for 10 with runners in scoring position as they clinched their fourth straight losing road series.

Although it wasn’t pretty, the Florida Marlins picked up a win in their first game under interim manager Edwin Rodriguez. Seldom do teams have to be perfect, though, when facing the woeful Baltimore Orioles. The Marlins look to win their second straight under Rodriguez and fourth in a row overall Thursday when they go for the sweep over the Orioles at Camden Yards. Florida fired Fredi Gonzalez earlier on Wednesday after he went 276-279 in three-plus seasons, and replaced him with Rodriguez, who was summoned from Triple-A New Orleans. Rodriguez’s debut started a bit shaky, as Baltimore took a 4-0 lead after two innings, but the Marlins rallied to take a 6-4 lead after seven. The struggling bullpen then made things interesting by giving up a run and loading the bases in the eighth, but Brian Sanches got out of the jam and Florida held on for a 7-5 victory. Chris Coghlan, Gaby Sanchez and Jorge Cantu each drove in two runs for Florida, which is trying to win four straight for the first time since a four-game sweep over the New York Mets from May 13-16. A win in the finale would also help the Marlins get back to .500 for the first time since they were 28-28 on June 4.

Florida has had little trouble against the Orioles, winning 11 of 12, and pretty much every team has given Baltimore problems lately. The Orioles have dropped 21 of 25, and are near the pace set by the 1962 Mets for the modern-day record of losses in a season with 120. Scheduled starter Kevin Millwood has been the victim of several tough-luck losses. Millwood finally earned his first victory after giving up three runs and seven hits in six innings of Friday’s 5-4 win in San Diego, snapping a career-worst eight-game losing streak. Although he earned that elusive first victory, Millwood again got into trouble early, yielding all three runs in the first inning. Millwood has given up at least two first-inning runs in each of his last six starts and 18 overall in the first inning during that span. Millwood should have better luck against a Florida team that has failed to score in the first inning in eight of nine games. He is 6-9 with a 5.47 ERA in 23 starts against the Marlins, but hasn’t faced them since 2004.

Adam Wainwright is among the best pitchers in baseball, but he’d like to show some consistency on the road. His first game against the punchless Toronto Blue Jays might be a good place to start. Wainwright looks to lead the NL Central-leading St. Louis Cardinals to a three-game sweep of the Blue Jays on Thursday night at Rogers Centre. Wainwright, St. Louis’ leader in wins and ERA, has been dominant at home, winning all seven starts with a 1.67 ERA. The right-hander hasn’t been able to translate that success onto the road, where he’s 3-4 with a 2.78 ERA in eight outings. Wainwright was superb in St. Louis again Saturday, yielding one unearned run and five hits in eight innings of a 4-3 win over Oakland. After winning 19 games and finishing third in the NL Cy Young voting in 2009, Wainwright is almost making success look routine.

Another strong performance from Wainwright could give the Cardinals their first sweep of the Blue Jays since taking three home games June 3-5, 2003. It could also help them increase their one-game Central lead over Cincinnati. Wainwright will face a Toronto team that is hitting .219 during a 7-12 stretch. Matt Holliday put St. Louis in position to sweep the Blue Jays, connecting for an RBI single in the ninth Wednesday to clinch a 1-0 win. The left fielder has been on a tear, going 13 for 22 with five homers, 11 RBIs and six runs in his last four games. The Blue Jays will give the ball to Brandon Morrow, who has been victimized by the club’s offensive shortcomings. The right-hander has a 1.89 ERA over his last three outings, but has no wins and one loss to show for it after receiving four total runs of support in that span. Those problems persisted Friday, as Morrow yielded two runs in six innings but didn’t get a decision in a 3-2 win over San Francisco. Morrow, who has never faced the Cardinals, is 0-2 with a 4.82 ERA in six career starts versus NL opponents.

The New York Mets are thriving during interleague play, while the Detroit Tigers can’t seem to win on the road. The Mets look to match a club record for victories in a season against AL opponents Thursday night, when they try to complete a sweep of the Tigers. New York is an NL-best 11-3 during interleague play, one win shy of the franchise high of 12, set in 1999. The Mets conclude interleague play this weekend with three home games against AL Central-leading Minnesota. The success against the AL is a big reason the Mets are 21-7 since a May 21 loss to the New York Yankees to open their interleague schedule. The surge, which includes a 12-1 record at Citi Field, has returned them to the thick of the NL East race. New York showed little signs of slowing Wednesday, beating Detroit 5-0 as R.A. Dickey and Francisco Rodriguez combined for a five-hitter. The Mets, who won Tuesday’s series opener 14-6, are 5-0 at home all-time versus the Tigers including a three-game sweep at Shea Stadium from June 18-20, 2004. Hisanori Takahashi gets another turn in New York’s rotation as John Maine struggles with a sore right shoulder.

The 35-year-old rookie left-hander is 3-1 with a 3.15 ERA in six starts in place of Maine. Takahashi turned in perhaps his best performance yet Friday, scattering four hits in six innings of a 4-0 road victory against the New York Yankees. He improved to 2-0 with a 0.47 ERA in three interleague starts, and has yielded one run over 13 innings while winning his last two. Mets center fielder Angel Pagan is expected to be out after suffering spasms in his right side Wednesday. The center fielder winced during a foul ball during one of his two at-bats, as his 10-game hitting streak came to an end. Shortstop Jose Reyes came within a double of the cycle Wednesday, and has six hits and six runs in this series as he continues to feast on AL pitching. Reyes is batting .417 with three doubles, two triples, four homers, eight RBIs and 17 runs in 13 interleague games.

With or without hot-hitting Josh Hamilton in the lineup, the Texas Rangers continue to win. After receiving a rare day off, the Rangers’ slugger should be back to help his team try for an 11th straight victory Thursday night against the lowly Pittsburgh Pirates, seeking to avoid a 14th consecutive road loss. Riding a career-best 17-game hitting streak and batting .339 on the season, Hamilton requested Wednesday night off after appearing in 31 straight games. Texas didn’t miss him, matching a season high for runs in a 13-3 win over Pittsburgh. Batting .485 during his streak, Hamilton will back in the lineup as the AL West-leading Rangers try to extend the majors’ longest winning streak of the season. Texas hasn’t won 11 in a row since a team-record 14-game run in 1991. Michael Young hit his 10th homer and drove in four runs while Nelson Cruz added three RBIs in Wednesday’s win. The Rangers have scored 64 runs during their winning streak.

Scott Feldman looks for a third straight victory when he takes the ball Thursday for Texas. The right-hander allowed three runs in seven innings of a 9-3 win at Houston on Friday - his third consecutive outing allowing three earned runs or fewer after giving up four or more in each of his previous six outings. Those are the only runs he’s given up in 13 innings over his last two starts. Feldman is 3-2 with a 4.10 ERA in nine career interleague starts. None were against Pittsburgh, but he allowed one run in 1 2-3 innings of relief versus the Pirates in 2007. The Pirates, who haven’t won on the road since May 25 at Cincinnati, have not dropped 14 straight away from home since a 19-game skid July 23-Aug. 30, 1985. Garrett Jones went 0 for 3 to snap his 12-game hitting streak Wednesday as the Pirates dropped to 2-9 in interleague play and 0-5 all-time at Texas. Jones is still hitting .396 in his last 13 games. Pittsburgh starter Jeff Karstens will face the Rangers for the first time.

Jason Hammel claims a stint on the disabled list gave him a chance to regroup. A career-best scoreless streak is proving he’s done more than that. Hammel looks for another dominant performance Thursday night in order to help the Rockies complete a three-game series sweep of the Boston Red Sox at Coors Field. Hammel landed on the DL with a groin injury in April after opening the season with an 0-2 record and 9.16 ERA through four starts. The right-hander is 5-1 with a 2.05 ERA in seven outings since returning, giving him half of his career-best win total from last year and providing the Rockies another big arm to go with ace Ubaldo Jimenez. Hammel has been particularly outstanding in his last five outings, going 4-0 with a 0.78 ERA. He credits his trip to the DL as a major reason for his turnaround. Hammel’s is currently riding a streak of 25 1-3 scoreless innings - a run of dominance coming on the heels of Jimenez’s club-record 33-inning scoreless streak May 15-June 6. He scattered eight hits in 7 1-3 innings of a 2-0 win over Milwaukee on Friday.

Hammel is 0-2 with a 5.50 ERA in eight career games - two starts - against the Red Sox, but can now help the Rockies beat them for a fifth consecutive time in the regular season. Jason Giambi put Colorado in position to record its first sweep of Boston, connecting for a two-run, walkoff homer against closer Jonathan Papelbon in Wednesday’s 8-6 win. The bullpen has plagued the Red Sox during their four-game road losing streak, posting an 0-2 record and 17.18 ERA. The impending return of Daisuke Matsuzaka from a right forearm strain could lighten the load on the relief corps. The right-hander, who was scratched from his last scheduled start June 12 and landed on the disabled list, was 3-1 with a 1.98 ERA in his last four starts prior to the injury. Matsuzaka’s only start against the Rockies came at Coors Field in Game 3 of the 2007 World Series, as he allowed two runs and three hits in 5 1-3 innings to earn the win and set the stage for a Boston sweep.

10:05 pm EDT Thu Jun 24, 2010

The Los Angeles Dodgers have endured several tough losses during a season-high six-game skid, but their latest defeat might have been their most disappointing. The scuffling Dodgers try to bounce back and avoid being swept in a season series to the Los Angeles Angels for the first time in Thursday night’s Freeway Series finale in Anaheim. The Dodgers were atop the NL West last Wednesday, but their recent woes have dropped them into a third-place tie with Colorado, four games back of division-leading San Diego. The Dodgers, in the midst of their longest losing streak since dropping eight straight from Aug. 22-29, 2008, appeared to have a decent chance of ending the slide Wednesday, but fell 2-1 when Russell Martin was tagged out at second base for the game’s final out an instant before Reed Johnson would have crossed the plate with the tying run. Pinch-hitter Jamey Carroll’s two-out single off Angels closer Brian Fuentes should have scored Johnson easily from second, but left fielder Juan Rivera alertly threw back to second base to double up Martin, who had been on first.

It marked the Dodgers’ ninth straight interleague defeat and fifth in a row to the Angels, who are a major league-best 18-6 since May 29 and 3 1/2 games behind AL West-leading Texas. Torii Hunter and Howie Kendrick drove in the Angels’ runs Wednesday. Hunter has six RBIs in his last six games, while Kendrick is hitting .404 with 11 RBIs in his last 11. Offensive woes have plagued the Dodgers, as they’ve plated 15 runs while batting .164 with runners in scoring position during their skid. Breaking out of this funk against Scott Kazmir likely won’t be easy. Kazmir has posted a 2.35 ERA in winning his four starts this month, yielding two runs or fewer in each outing. This stretch includes a 4-2 victory over the Dodgers on June 12, when the left-hander allowed two runs, three hits and four walks in five innings. In Friday’s 7-6 win over the Chicago Cubs, Kazmir gave up two runs and five hits in six innings.

While the Chicago White Sox have cut six games off their deficit in the AL Central in the last two weeks, it’s been more than a month since Gavin Floyd got to enjoy a victory. On Thursday, Floyd will try to snap a five-game losing streak as he takes the mound for the White Sox, who look to complete a sweep of the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves and get their ninth straight victory. Chicago was 9 1/2 games out of first place on June 8, but it has won eight straight and 12 of 13 to move within 3 1/2 games of the division-leading Twins. It trails the second-place Tigers by two games. Mark Buehrle provided the White Sox a seventh straight quality start, giving up two runs in six innings while escaping several jams. Chicago’s starters have a 2.21 ERA during the 13-game surge, winning 11. Floyd is the lone starter who hasn’t picked up a win during this stretch. He is winless since limiting Florida to one run in 6 1-3 innings of a 4-1 victory May 22.

He has a 1.43 ERA in his last three starts, but the White Sox have scored only three runs in those games. Floyd is 0-3 with a 3.41 ERA in his previous five outings and yielded one run and four hits in eight innings against Washington Friday in a 2-1, 11-inning victory. Carlos Quentin will try to help provide more support. He homered twice Wednesday and has three the last two games. Floyd is 1-1 with a 9.95 ERA in four starts and one relief appearance against the Braves. However, he is facing them for the first time since 2006. The right-hander will look to help the White Sox win nine in a row for the first time since June 15-24, 2006. Having lost a series for the first time since dropping two of three at Philadelphia from May 7-9, the Braves will attempt to avoid the sweep. They came in having won five straight, but their lead over the Mets in the NL East is down to one-half game. Melky Cabrera went 3 for 4 on Wednesday, but Atlanta grounded into two double plays and stranded seven.

A rare victory over San Francisco has the Houston Astros in position to win their first series in two weeks. The Astros look for a second straight victory over the Giants to conclude their three-game set Thursday at Minute Maid Park. Jeff Keppinger drove in three runs and Carlos Lee added two hits as Houston snapped a nine-game losing streak to San Francisco with a 6-3 win Wednesday. After winning for the second time in 11 games to snap a five-game skid overall, the Astros now have a chance to win their first series since taking three of four at Colorado from June 7-10. Trying to avoid a fourth consecutive losing series likely will not be easy against San Francisco’s scheduled starter Matt Cain, who is coming off his first loss since May 22. The right-hander posted an 0.55 ERA while winning his previous four starts before he gave up three eighth-inning runs in a 3-0 loss at Toronto on Saturday.

Cain is 1-2 with a 3.90 ERA in four starts against the Astros. He allowed four runs in 6 2-3 innings, but didn’t factor in the decision of a 10-4 win at Houston on April 7. Lee is 5 for 11 with a home run and double against Cain. The Astros’ slugger is hitting a disappointing .228, but is 5 for 12 in his last three games against the Giants. After Brett Myers gave the Astros a strong seven innings Wednesday, Wandy Rodriguez tries to avoid a fourth straight loss. The left-hander allowed six runs in three innings of a 9-3 loss to Texas on Friday. Rodriguez is 0-3 with a 10.20 ERA since his last victory against Washington on June 2. In his last start against San Francisco on April 6, Rodriguez allowed three runs in six innings of a 3-0 loss. That dropped him to 0-2 with an 8.38 ERA versus the Giants.Edgar Renteria had three hits and former Astro Aubrey Huff drove in a run Wednesday as San Francisco fell to 2-3 on a six-game road trip.
