Since leaving the old Forum behind in 1996, the Montreal Canadiens have yet to take advantage of home ice at Bell Centre in the playoffs. And with the Pittsburgh Penguins possibly on the verge of getting Jordan Staal back in their lineup, that goal could very well remain beyond the Canadiens’ grasp in Game 4 of their Eastern Conference semifinal Thursday night. After wresting home-ice from the defending Stanley Cup champions with a split of the first two games in Pittsburgh, Montreal squandered its edge with yet another home loss Tuesday night. The Canadiens have lost seven of eight home playoff games, including three of four this spring. Overall, Montreal has won only 13 of 37 postseason games since moving into its new downtown arena 14 years ago. Marc-Andre Fleury became the first goalie to shut out the Canadiens on home ice in the playoffs in 27 years. The Penguins goalie made 18 saves in Pittsburgh’s 2-0 win, ending Montreal’s streak of 118 consecutive playoff games. The last time it happened, Buffalo’s Bob Sauve blanked the Canadiens in straight games at the Forum in April 1983.

The Canadiens had virtually identical records wherever they played during the regular season, going 20-16-5 at home and 19-17-5 on the road. So far, the playoffs have been a different story. Montreal has won four of six road games in Washington and Pittsburgh, including three of four during its first-round upset series win over the President’s Trophy-winning Capitals. Staal was on the ice with his Pittsburgh teammates only five days after undergoing surgery to repair a severed tendon in his right foot. The Penguins’ 21-year-old center skated for about an hour on Wednesday after cutting his foot on the skate of Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban during Pittsburgh’s 6-3 win Friday. Prior to being sidelined for Games 2 and 3, Staal had never missed a game because of injury during his four-year career. It was the second straight day Staal put on his skates. He skated for about 5 minutes in a track suit on Tuesday. Penguins coach Dan Bylsma would not reveal any timetable for Staal’s return to the lineup.

The Detroit Red Wings have accomplished a lot over the last two decades, winning four Stanley Cups in six trips to the finals during the longest active postseason streak in sports. The Red Wings, though, have never done what they’re trying to do now. If fact, just two teams in NHL history have won a series after trailing 3-0 as Detroit does against the San Jose Sharks. Detroit will host the top-seeded Sharks in Game 4 on Thursday night in their Western Conference semifinal, hoping to give itself a chance to join a select group. The Toronto Maple Leafs, in the 1942 finals against Detroit, and the New York Islanders, in the 1975 quarterfinals against Pittsburgh, are the only teams in NHL history to win a series after trailing 0-3. The Sharks look like they’re finally taking their turn in the playoffs, moving within a game of making it to the conference finals for first time since 2004 when the franchise made its longest run. They’ve won each of the first three games of the series by a score of 4-3, including Tuesday’s overtime victory after trailing by two goals with 13 minutes left in regulation. Their winning streak stands at six games.

San Jose goaltender Evgeni Nabokov acknowledged being surprised to have Detroit on the brink of elimination already. San Jose center Manny Malhotra said he and his teammates are like the Red Wings, focusing only on the next game. The Sharks have taken control of the second-round series in large part because Nabokov has been more effective than rookie Jimmy Howard. They have also dominated late, rallying from a deficit in the final period of the past two games. Now, they want to slam the door on Detroit’s bid to advance to the conference finals for a fourth straight year. If Detroit can figure out a way to win Game 4, it might take some comfort in knowing Montreal rallied from a 3-1 deficit to eliminate Washington this postseason and the Capitals came back to beat the New York Rangers after losing three of the first four games last year in the playoffs.

8:00 pm EDT Thu May 6, 2010

Atlanta Hawks coach Mike Woodson woke up Wednesday and watched a movie. It was a horror film with a predictable plot, a super villain and plenty of heart-wrenching moments. Hawks were ripped apart in nearly every scene before the painful-to-watch finish. Yep, Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic followed their usual script against Atlanta on Tuesday, although the latest thrashing was even more chilling. Orlando’s 43-point victory in the Eastern Conference semifinal opener left the Hawks with little explanation Wednesday, describing the loss with words like “panic” and “discombobulated” and “embarrassing.” Atlanta has to slow Howard and the Magic down in Game 2 of the best-of-seven series on Thursday night, or the Hawks could be headed toward another quick second-round stint.

The Magic led by as many as 46 points in the fourth, even with Howard and the rest of their starters on the bench. It was the largest margin of defeat in the playoffs since the franchise moved to Atlanta in 1968, and the second-largest playoff victory in the Magic’s history. The Magic, oddly, are trying to take the same approach. Coach Stan Van Gundy gave his team a history lesson at Wednesday’s practice, rolling off statistics about teams that lost after a blowout playoff win. The only Magic win by a larger margin was by 47 points in the first round against Boston in 1995, and they lost the next game, but won the series 3-1. The score, not the Magic’s win, might have been the only surprise. The Hawks have struggled for several seasons against their Southeast Division rival. They’ve had no answer for Howard on the inside, and no defense on Orlando’s potent 3-point shooters. The Magic had won six straight regular-season games in the series until Josh Smith’s buzzer-beating dunk in the last regular-season meeting. Orlando finished 3-1 against Atlanta this season, with wins of 37, 32 and 17 points.

The only time Roy Halladay faced the St. Louis Cardinals, Albert Pujols managed to hit the ball out of the infield once in four at-bats. Pujols looks for his first hit against Halladay in a marquee matchup when the Cardinals and Philadelphia Phillies complete their four-game series Thursday afternoon. Halladay pitched against St. Louis while with Toronto, throwing a five-hitter in a 4-1 victory June 13, 2005. Pujols went 0 for 4 with three groundouts. Nearly five years later, Pujols, Yadier Molina and Skip Schumaker are the only Cardinals that remain from the lineup Halladay faced. Adjusting to the NL has not been a problem for Halladay, however. The right-hander leads the majors with three complete games, pitching a three-hitter and striking out six in a 10-0 win over the New York Mets on Saturday. Halladay has recorded 39 strikeouts and issued four walks in 49 innings.

Pujols is batting .421 with eight RBIs during a 10-game hitting streak. He’s 10 for 54 against the Phillies since 2008, going 3 for 13 with no RBIs in this series. Philadelphia has received outstanding starting pitching to win the last two games after losing the opener. Cole Hamels struck out eight in eight-plus innings in a 2-1, 10-inning victory Tuesday before Kyle Kendrick earned his first win by scattering six hits over seven innings in a 4-0 victory Wednesday.Shane Victorino hit a solo homer and had two hits Wednesday for the Phillies, who have won five of seven. Victorino is 8 for 22 with three homers and eight RBIs in his last five games. It’s been a dismal series for St. Louis right fielder Ryan Ludwick, who is 0 for 12 with five strikeouts. Matt Holliday had two doubles in the opener but has a single and four strikeouts in nine at-bats since. Cardinals starter Kyle Lohse is still in search of his first win despite a strong outing his last time out. Lohse gave up one run over seven innings in a 6-3 victory over Cincinnati on Saturday. The right-hander had eight strikeouts after totaling seven in his first four starts.

With Jason Heyward ailing, the Atlanta Braves may have a tough time continuing their success at the plate after snapping a long road skid. Tim Hudson, though, may not need all that much support. The Braves, who may be without the rookie slugger, hope Hudson can come through with yet another outstanding performance against the Washington Nationals on Thursday night. Atlanta snapped an eight-game road losing streak Wednesday night, getting a tiebreaking single from Matt Diaz in the 10th inning to win the middle game of this three-game set 7-6. Still, the Braves scored at least seven runs for the third time in four games, even with Heyward leaving in the second inning due to a sore right groin. Heyward, who is day to day, was replaced in right field by Melky Cabrera. The 20-year-old Heyward is batting .286 and has a team-high eight homers and 24 RBIs. He was the NL rookie of the month for April after hitting six home runs and driving in 19.

Atlanta had 10 hits, five for extra bases, without Heyward. Hudson has gotten by at times with much less run support than that when facing the Washington. The veteran right-hander is 8-1 with a 1.55 ERA in 13 starts versus the Nationals. In four outings at Washington, he’s 3-0 with a 0.87 ERA. Nationals No. 3 hitter Ryan Zimmerman is 3 for 23 against him. Hudson earned a win in his last outing, giving up a season-low one run in 6 2-3 innings of a 10-1 victory over Houston on Saturday. Washington will counter with Scott Olsen, who has struggled against the Braves, going 3-5 with a 6.25 ERA in 12 starts. Olsen, though, has not allowed a run over his last two starts, winning both. The left-hander had an 11.74 ERA through his previous two outings.Olsen gave up five hits and struck out four in six innings of a 7-1 win over Florida on Friday night.

7:05 pm EDT Thu May 6, 2010

The Pittsburgh Pirates have already lost 11 games by at least six runs, a pattern that suggests an 18th straight losing season is on the horizon. When staying close, though, they’ve been awfully tough to beat. Solid pitching has lifted the Pirates to two tight wins against visiting Chicago, and another close contest could be in store Thursday night as Pittsburgh looks to complete its first three-game sweep of the Cubs in nearly four years. The Pirates have allowed 86 more runs than they’ve scored - by far the worst differential in the majors - but they’re hanging around .500 nonetheless. Pittsburgh’s 15 losses have been by an average of 7.4 runs, but it’s a major league-best 10-1 in games decided by two runs or fewer. Two solid outings by starting pitchers, and Ryan Church’s bat have helped the Pirates take two close games in this set. Paul Maholm went six innings, and Church hit a two-run shot in Tuesday’s 3-2 win. Struggling Charlie Morton then lasted through six innings for his first win of the season, and Church’s solo homer provided some insurance in a 4-2 victory Wednesday.

Pittsburgh is 10-1 when it scores four runs or more, and 12-3 when it allows five runs or fewer. The Pirates might have a tough time cracking the four-run barrier against Randy Wells, who went 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA in a pair of starts against Pittsburgh as a rookie with Chicago in 2009. Wells is coming off his worst start of the season, though it still yielded a positive result. The right-hander gave up five runs and eight hits over six innings last Thursday - striking out eight - but was backed by four homers in an 11-5 win over Arizona at windy Wrigley Field. Wells has received an average of 6.6 runs of support this year, but Chicago’s offense has gone silent in Pittsburgh. Manager Lou Piniella decided he’d seen enough from the slumping Aramis Ramirez in the No. 5 spot, and flipped him with red-hot No. 6 hitter Alfonso Soriano on Wednesday, but the Cubs managed just five singles.

Even after an encouraging performance, David Ortiz may be headed back to the bench. Set to face left-hander Scott Kazmir, the Boston Red Sox are expected to start Mike Lowell in favor of Ortiz as they try to hand the Los Angeles Angels their seventh straight loss Thursday night. Thanks partly to Ortiz’s hitting, Boston has a chance to sweep this four-game series and leave Los Angeles with its longest losing streak since dropping its final seven of 2001. Ortiz hit a solo homer in a 3-1 win Wednesday night, finishing with three hits to raise his average from .149 to .171. Ortiz was back in the lineup as the designated hitter despite striking out twice and grounding into two double plays in a 5-1 win Tuesday. The veteran, though, may not get rewarded with another start. Lowell has been getting the playing time against left-handers, putting him in line to face Kazmir. Ortiz is batting .205 with two homers and 11 strikeouts versus Kazmir, while Lowell has more homers against him than any other player, connecting four times in 40 at-bats.

Kazmir is 8-7 with a 3.59 ERA in 23 starts against the Red Sox and is coming off his best outing of the season. He allowed two runs and struck out seven in six innings while not receiving a decision in a 3-2 loss to Detroit on Saturday. Kazmir had a 7.20 ERA through his first three outings. Boston will counter with Daisuke Matsuzaka, who had a tough season debut, giving up seven runs and seven hits in 4 2-3 innings of a 12-9 loss to Baltimore on Saturday night. The right-hander spent all of April on the disabled list with a neck strain. Matsuzaka is 1-1 with a 4.91 ERA in two starts against the Angels. Los Angeles continues to struggle at the plate, scoring two runs or fewer in four of its last five games. The Angels were held to a season-low two hits Wednesday, getting a solo homer from No. 9 hitter Brandon Wood. Hideki Matsui started in left field and went 0 for 3. Matsui is 3 for 28 with eight strikeouts in his last eight games. Manager Mike Scioscia said Matsui is unlikely to play the outfield in two straight games, but with runs scarce for the Angels, Matsui isn’t expected to sit out.

There was nothing wrong with Matt Cain’s performance in his first four starts, but the right-hander didn’t display the dominant repertoire that the San Francisco Giants are used to seeing. He made up for it in his first start in May. Cain allowed one hit while picking up his first win in commanding fashion last time out, and he’ll look to build on that as he tries to help the visiting Giants complete a three-game sweep of the Florida Marlins on Thursday night. Cain lasted at least seven innings in 17 of his 33 starts when he made the NL All-Star team last season, but he only pitched into the seventh once in his first four outings of 2010 while failing to win. That changed Saturday against Colorado. Cain allowed only a fourth-inning double and three walks over eight shutout innings, striking out eight in a 6-1 victory.

The Marlins have already seen excellent performances from both San Francisco starters this week as the Giants have guaranteed a fourth straight series victory. Tim Lincecum struck out 13 over seven innings Tuesday before Sergio Romo blew the lead late, and San Francisco rallied to win 9-6 in 12 innings. Barry Zito held Florida to one run over seven-plus innings Wednesday but was saved from three other potential runs. Romo relieved Zito with the bases loaded and no outs in the eighth, but worked out of the jam before Brian Wilson closed out a 3-2 victory. Cain will be opposed by Ricky Nolasco, who’s been much better on the road than at home. The right-hander is 2-0 with a 1.90 ERA away from Sun Life Stadium and 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA at home. Nolasco gave up five runs and eight hits over four innings in a 7-1 loss to Washington on Friday.

After losing eight in a row to open this season, the Houston Astros bounced back with a flurry of victories. Following the end to another eight-game slide, the Astros are looking to repeat that trend, but they won’t have an easy matchup Thursday night. In the finale of a four-game series at Minute Maid Park, Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Dan Haren will try to win his fourth straight start over the Astros and earn his third victory in a row overall. Houston avoided matching its worst start in franchise history with a 5-1 victory in St. Louis on April 15 and earned another seven wins over its next nine games. Houston, though, fell back into another deep funk after that, scoring only 13 runs in eight straight defeats. The Astros had two runs heading into the ninth inning Wednesday until Carlos Lee hit his first home run of the season. Lee’s two-run shot over the train tracks in left field gave his team a long-awaited 4-2 win. Tommy Manzella also hit his first major league homer in the victory.

Lee has hit one of his 308 career homers off Haren, but is 2 for 11 overall against the right-hander. His teammates haven’t been all that successful either lately versus Haren. The right-hander has a 2.66 ERA during his three straight wins over the Astros, but all of those have come in Arizona. He hasn’t pitched in Houston since Sept. 28, 2004, but is 0-2 with a 6.23 ERA there. Haren could earn his first win at Minute Maid if he can continue his string of solid road outings, having gone 1-0 with a 3.10 ERA in three starts. Despite waking up with an upset stomach Saturday in Chicago, he allowed three runs and 10 hits over six innings but was denied a third win in as many starts as the Diamondbacks bullpen blew a two-run lead in a 7-5 loss.

With the majority of their remaining games in May at home, it would seem the Texas Rangers have a good chance to string together some wins. First, the Rangers must avoid a third straight loss when they open a four-game home series with the Kansas City Royals on Thursday night. Though Texas is 7-6 at home this season, it has an opportunity to improve that mark while playing 14 of the next 17 games in Arlington. The Rangers, who have two wins and a split over their last three home series, are 42-21 in May since the start of 2008. They’ll open this set after dropping two straight at Oakland to conclude a 4-2 swing. Elvis Andrus had two hits, and Vladimir Guerrero had an RBI in a 4-1 loss to the Athletics on Wednesday. Texas had scored at least four runs in three of its previous five contests. Guerrero has been in the proper state of mind during his first season with the Rangers. The 2004 AL MVP is 6 for 18 with a homer and six RBIs in his last five games. Texas will hand the ball to Matt Harrison, who looks to build off his first win in almost a year.

After giving up 12 runs in his previous two starts, the left-hander allowed three in six innings of a 6-3 win at Seattle on Saturday for his first victory since May 14. Harrison was limited to 11 starts last season because of thoracic outlet syndrome. The Royals look to bounce back after a 9-2 loss at Chicago on Wednesday that dropped them to 3-4 on their season-high 11-game road trip. Alberto Callaspo had an RBI and two of the 12 hits for the Royals, who went 2 for 9 with runners in scoring position during the finale. Kansas City is averaging 2.6 runs during its trip. Despite his team’s struggles to score consistently, Callaspo is 9 for 27 with five RBIs on the trip, and 11 for 23 with three doubles in his last six games against Texas. Butler is 10 for 29 on the trip, and a lifetime .346 hitter versus the Rangers.

8:10 pm EDT Thu May 6, 2010

After enjoying years of success at the Metrodome, the Minnesota Twins are growing quite comfortable in their new home park. The Baltimore Orioles seem unlikely to spoil that home-field advantage. The AL Central-leading Twins look to win their fourth straight at Target Field on Thursday night when they open a four-game series against the lowly Orioles, owners of the majors leagues’ worst road record. Minnesota’s .606 home winning percentage from 2002-09 was the third best in baseball, helping the club to five division titles. The Twins said goodbye to the Metrodome after last season, and have apparently brought that home edge to their new outdoor park. Minnesota, 9-3 at Target Field, began a nine-game homestand this week with a three-game sweep of Detroit. With a 5-4 win Wednesday, the Twins opened a 3 1/2-game lead over the second-place Tigers.

Denard Span once again sparked Minnesota offensively with Joe Mauer sitting out his fifth straight game. Span singled three times, walked, scored and drove in a run, and has gone 11 for 22 with four RBIs and five runs in the last five games. He has recorded at least a hit in his last 10 at Target Field, batting .410 with eight RBIs and eight runs. While success at home has helped Minnesota to one of the best records in baseball, road woes are a big part of Baltimore having the worst mark in the majors. The Orioles, 3-13 away from Camden Yards, are coming off a three-game sweep at Yankee Stadium. After dropping the first two in the Bronx by 4-1 scores, the Orioles lost the finale 7-5 on Wednesday. Baltimore, 3-2 against the Twins last season, trailed 6-1 after seven innings before scoring four times against New York’s bullpen.

Poor starting pitching has been a key reason the Chicago White Sox are off to a disappointing start. John Danks, however, has not been part of the problem.Danks tries for his fourth win when the White Sox open a four-game home series Thursday night against the Toronto Blue Jays, who are looking for their fifth consecutive victory. Expected to be the strength of the team, Chicago’s rotation ranks near the bottom of the majors with a 5.12 ERA. Danks has been the best of a unit that includes Mark Buehrle and Jake Peavy. One of Danks’ better outings came April 14, when he allowed one run and two hits while striking out six in seven innings of an 11-1 win at Toronto. Danks, who is 1-2 with a 5.03 ERA in four starts against the Blue Jays, gave up two runs in five innings but didn’t receive a decision in a 7-6 win at New York on Saturday.

Though the White Sox rank last in the majors batting .199 with runners in scoring position, they gave Freddy Garcia more than enough support in a 9-2 victory over Kansas City on Wednesday. Andruw Jones and former Blue Jay Alex Rios each homered and drove in three runs as Chicago won for the fifth time in six games at home. Rios was 6 for 17 with a homer when the White Sox split a four-game set at Toronto last month. Three of Jones’ nine home runs came in that series. Chicago could have its hands full this weekend against a Toronto team that’s 9-3 on the road and trying for its second five-game winning streak of the season. Adam Lind’s two-out, two-run homer highlighted a three-run ninth inning Wednesday as the Blue Jays won 5-4 to open a 10-game trip with a sweep of Cleveland.

The Tampa Bay Rays continue to roll on the road. They’ll try to become the first team to begin 12-1 away from home in 26 years when they complete a three-game set against the struggling Seattle Mariners on Thursday night. Tampa Bay improved to 11-1 on the road with an 8-3 victory Wednesday. That matches marks set by the 2003 New York Yankees and 1994 Atlanta Braves - with both losing game No. 13. If the Rays complete the sweep, they would own the best road start since the 1984 World Series champion Detroit Tigers began 17-0. Tampa Bay’s 20-7 start is the best by an AL club since another that won the World Series, the 2005 Chicago White Sox. The Rays are also trying for their first sweep at Safeco Field since Aug. 23-25, 2004. Tampa Bay has used two solid eight-inning starts in this series. James Shields struck out 10 and allowed both runs in a 5-2 victory Tuesday and Matt Garza yielded two runs Wednesday. Rays starters have a major league-best 2.29 ERA on the road.

The Mariners have scored nine runs during a five-game home skid - their longest since they lost seven straight July 19-August 2, 2008. Franklin Gutierrez’s two-run homer in the fourth inning Wednesday ended a seven-game drought without one. Seattle also got bad news about a pair of starters. Milton Bradley, baseball’s self-described bad guy, has asked the club for help in dealing with what manager Don Wakamatsu says is “emotional stress” from personal issues. Bradley is batting .214 with two home runs and 12 RBIs in 21 games, and was angry after being pulled early from Tuesday’s game. On the field, shortstop Jack Wilson left Wednesday’s game due to right knee tightness. Tampa Bay starter Jeff Niemann will try to add to those woes after limiting hitters to a .206 average in his first five outings. Niemann allowed one run over 7 1-3 innings in a 3-2 loss to Kansas City on Friday.

In the first four games of their season-high road trip, the Milwaukee Brewers produced only two solo home runs. It’s been a much different story since they arrived in Los Angeles. The Brewers will try to continue their offensive resurgence Thursday night and complete their first sweep of the Dodgers. Milwaukee had scored at least 17 runs twice before heading into its 10-game Western trek, but was shut out in three of its four games in San Diego last week. The Brewers avoided a sweep with a 2-1 victory Saturday when Rickie Weeks and starting pitcher Yovani Gallardo each homered. Milwaukee didn’t hit a home run Wednesday night, but scored 11 runs for the second straight game. In an 11-3 victory, the Brewers got four of those runs in the first inning and seven over the final two. Weeks led the way with three hits and three RBIs in the win, which followed an 11-6 victory in the series opener. Milwaukee also jumped on Los Angeles early in that game with a nine-run second inning.

A rough second inning hurt the Dodgers’ John Ely in his major league debut April 28 in New York. The right-hander gave up four runs in that inning during a 7-3 loss, but settled down to allow one run over his final four innings. The defeat is among the nine the Dodgers have suffered in 13 games. The Brewers, meanwhile, have won three of four this month after dropping seven of eight. Dave Bush took the loss Friday in a 3-0 defeat at San Diego, but it was an improvement from his previous outing. The right-hander was tagged for nine runs in 3 2-3 innings April 25 in a 12-2 drubbing versus the visiting Chicago Cubs. He allowed one run over his first six innings against the Padres before giving up a two-run homer to Scott Hairston in the seventh.
