While the Columbus Blue Jackets have long faded out of contention for the playoffs, the same appears to be happening to the Atlanta Thrashers. The Thrashers seek to end a three-game slide Thursday night when they visit the Blue Jackets, who hope to have superstar Rick Nash back in the lineup. Columbus won’t be returning to the playoffs thanks to a dismal season in which coach Ken Hitchcock was fired Feb. 3 and reigning Calder Trophy winner Steve Mason has struggled to post a 3.15 goals-against average after finishing 2008-09 at 2.29.

Atlanta, which has also made the playoffs only once in 2007, seemed to be building for the future when it traded Ilya Kovalchuk to New Jersey on Feb. 4. The Thrashers, though, got back into contention with a 4-0-2 stretch from Feb. 6-March 4. That was right before this current slide in which Atlanta has scored three goals and fallen four points behind Boston, which holds the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The Thrashers fell 2-1 at home to Nashville on Tuesday. The Thrashers fell behind 2-0 after one period and finished 0 for 2 on the power play, extending their drought to 10 chances with the man advantage during this skid.

The Pittsburgh Penguins had been playing inconsistent hockey since late December when the Olympic break rolled around, so they were hoping two weeks away would revitalize the team as it prepares to defend its Stanley Cup title. A little time off seems to have done wonders. The Penguins look for their fifth consecutive win when they open a five-game road trip Thursday night at the RBC Center, where the improving Carolina Hurricanes have little margin for error in their effort to make a late postseason push.

Pittsburgh had gone 10-11-3 and was outscored 81-70 from Dec. 27-Feb. 14, never winning more than two consecutive games. Despite those struggles, the Atlantic Division title was still very much up for grabs as the Penguins headed into the Olympic break just a point behind New Jersey. Having two weeks to regroup - and adding a pair of players at the trade deadline - seems to have Pittsburgh headed in the right direction. Evgeni Malkin scored his second game-winning goal in four days Sunday, lifting the Penguins to a 2-1 victory over Boston and a 4-0 mark since the break.

The St. Louis Blues saw their longest winning streak of the season end in their last game. An advantageous schedule could allow them to start a new run. The Blues look to rebound from their worst defensive performance in two years when they visit the New York Islanders on Thursday night. St. Louis won a season-high five in a row before falling 7-3 at Colorado on Saturday. The club allowed its highest goal total since losing by the same score at Calgary on March 10, 2008. The Blues are 11th in the Western Conference, six points back of the Flames for eight place.

St. Louis, 4-2-0 in its last six road contests, faces Columbus on Saturday after its matchup with the Islanders - a last-place team like the Blue Jackets. The Blues conclude their six-game trip Sunday against Minnesota, loser of three straight, and also visit the New York Rangers - another team that has struggled of late - on Tuesday. Alex Steen scored two goals against the Avalanche and has three goals and three assists in his last three games. His 18 goals match a career high from 2005-06 when he was a rookie with Toronto.

When Marco Sturm scored in overtime to give Boston a 2-1 win over Philadelphia at Fenway Park on Jan. 1, the Bruins hoped the Winter Classic victory would propel them toward a strong second-half run. Instead, they’ve continued to struggle with injuries, and they may again be without their top forward and defenseman Thursday as they face the Flyers for the first time since their dramatic outdoor victory. Philadelphia has surged past the Bruins in the Eastern Conference playoff chase and will be looking for a sixth consecutive home victory.

Boston was 21-12-7 after beating the Flyers at Fenway, and the Bruins figured they could only improve after an injury-riddled start to the season. Instead, Boston has gone 8-12-5 since New Year’s Day, including a 10-game losing streak Jan. 16-Feb. 6. Now, the Bruins are dealing with two more key injuries. Forward Marc Savard and captain Zdeno Chara both missed Tuesday’s 4-3 overtime loss at Eastern Conference-worst Toronto. Chara, the reigning Norris Trophy winner, is day-to-day with a lower-body injury.

While the Tampa Bay Lightning can still advance to the postseason for the first time in three seasons, they don’t have much time to get back on track. The Lightning look to snap a four-game road losing streak Thursday and post a fourth straight win at Air Canada Centre as they face the Eastern Conference-worst Toronto Maple Leafs. Despite losing six of seven, Tampa Bay is in 11th place in the East and five points back of Boston for the eighth and final playoff spot with a month left in the regular season. Second-year center Steven Stamkos has been doing his best to carry the Lightning to their first postseason appearance since 2006-07, but not even his franchise-record 17-game point streak has been enough to curb the team’s poor play.

Stamkos has five points in the last two meetings with Toronto but had none in the Lightning’s only visit to Air Canada Centre this season - a 2-1 overtime victory Nov. 3. Ryan Malone had the game-winner in that matchup, but he could miss his second straight contest with an upper-body injury. He’s gone 14 games without scoring since tallying a third-period, game-tying goal in a 3-2 overtime win over the Maple Leafs on Jan. 21.

With Scott Gomez providing the offensive punch, the surging Montreal Canadiens are making a push for a third straight playoff berth. Gomez and the Canadiens look to match a season high with their fourth consecutive win when they host the NHL-worst Edmonton Oilers on Thursday night. In his first season with the Canadiens, Gomez is well on his way to eclipsing his point total from a disappointing 2008-09 season. He has recorded five goals and 10 assists in his last 11 games, giving him 50 points - eight shy of what he had last season. Gomez’s surge helped Montreal win seven of those contests, and the Canadiens have won four of five to move into seventh place in the Eastern Conference, two points back of sixth-place Philadelphia.

Second on the team in points and assists, Gomez recorded two goals and six assists in the last four games. Gomez had a goal and two assists in a 5-3 victory over Tampa Bay on Monday. The Canadiens are in position to match their longest winning streak of the season for a second time. They won four in a row from Oct. 20-26 and from Dec. 19-26. Gomez has eight assists in eight meetings with the Oilers, including one in a 3-2 road loss Oct. 10.

The Detroit Red Wings could use some consistency in the final month of the season if they are going to keep their streak of playoff appearances intact. A home meeting with the struggling Minnesota Wild might be a good place to start. The Red Wings look to continue their success against the Wild at Joe Louis Arena when the teams meet there for the first time this season Thursday night. Detroit has not won three in a row since a season-high four-game run from Dec. 11-17, going 13-12-7 since and posting consecutive wins four times.

The Red Wings were again in position to win their third straight Tuesday, but wasted a one-goal lead in a listless third period and lost 4-2 at home to Calgary. That performance came two nights after they scored five second-period goals to rally for a 5-4 road win over Central Division-leading Chicago. The two-time defending Western Conference champion, Detroit is in ninth place, one point behind Calgary with 16 games remaining. The Wings have reached the playoffs in 18 consecutive seasons - the longest such streak in major professional sports. A big factor in the Red Wings’ struggles has been the club’s play at Joe Louis Arena.

With one month left, the Florida Panthers know they’re a longshot to reach the playoffs for the first time since 2000. More efforts like the one in their last game could shorten those odds considerably. Looking for their season-high fourth straight win, the Panthers continue a three-game western swing Thursday night against the Colorado Avalanche, who hope former Florida goaltender Craig Anderson can put a bad loss and the memory of a scary injury behind him. Florida opened its trip with a 3-2 shootout victory over Minnesota on Tuesday. Michael Frolik and Cory Stillman scored in the third period to erase a two-goal deficit, and Stillman had the only tally by either club in the shootout.

The key to the win, though, was Tomas Vokoun. He needed to make only nine saves through overtime and turned aside all four attempts in the tiebreaker. The Panthers are well outside the top eight in the Eastern Conference with a difficult stretch coming up. They will close their road trip Saturday in San Jose before facing Washington, Phoenix and Buffalo at home. A resurgent offense could help Florida achieve that. The Panthers have scored 14 goals during their winning streak, led by four from Frolik and two each from Stillman and Kamil Kreps.

Back in the win column following the Olympic break, the Ottawa Senators look for continued success on their three-game trip in Western Canada. The Senators hope to keep getting their offense back on track Thursday when they face a surging Calgary Flames team back in the top eight in the Western Conference. Ottawa won 14 of 16 before the Olympic break and entered the two-week hiatus with a one-point lead over Buffalo atop the Northeast Division. The Senators, though, went 0-2-1 following the break prior to Tuesday’s 4-1 victory at Edmonton.

They scored only one goal in each game during the losing streak, failing to muster more than 26 shots in any of them. Ottawa had 39 shots Tuesday and two power-play goals in the third period after scoring one in the previous three games combined. Captain Daniel Alfredsson felt Saturday’s 2-1 shootout loss to Toronto provided a key step in the right direction. The Senators, whose trip ends Saturday against Northwest Division-leading Vancouver, are looking for back-to-back road wins for the first time since a six-game run Jan. 14-Feb. 3. However, they have lost three straight in Calgary since a 1-0 victory Jan. 9, 2003.

The San Jose Sharks and Nashville Predators could be headed for a meeting in the playoffs. Judging by their regular season matchups, such a series would seem likely to be tightly contested. The Sharks and Predators conclude their season series Thursday night at HP Pavilion after playing one-goal games in each of the first three matchups. All of those games finished 4-3, with the Sharks winning twice. Eight of the last nine meetings were decided by one goal. The Sharks are battling Chicago for the top seed in the Western Conference while the Predators are in seventh place, two points ahead of Calgary.

Nashville kept San Jose’s power play from being a factor as the clubs split the first two meetings in November, killing off all three chances. That wasn’t the case in the last matchup as Dany Heatley scored two power-play goals in the Sharks’ road win Feb. 3. Heatley was limited to one assist and four shots on goal in the first two games. Evgeni Nabokov sat out the first two games versus the Predators, then made 35 saves last month to move to 6-1 with a 1.99 goals-against average in his last seven starts against them.

Last month, the Atlanta Hawks were unable to make it into Washington D.C. due to a winter storm. They are facing a different kind of challenge heading into the rescheduled matchup. The Hawks will try to avoid losing three straight for the first time in more than two months when they visit the Washington Wizards on Thursday night. Atlanta is making its first trip to the nation’s capital this season after the originally scheduled matchup Feb. 6 was postponed because of a blizzard which left two feet of snow in the area.

Atlanta would have gone into that meeting on a two-game winning streak, but heads into Thursday’s contest having dropped two in a row. The Hawks have been held to fewer than 100 points in both of the road losses after averaging 115.3 points during a four-game winning streak. They are coming off a 99-98 loss at New York on Monday. After rallying from 10 down, Josh Smith had a chance to put Atlanta ahead, but his shot was blocked with 1.7 seconds left and officials ruled upon review that Al Horford’s short jumper came after the buzzer. The inability to convert late came after the Hawks blew a 12-point second-half lead to Miami on Saturday.

In their last two games, the surging Orlando Magic posted wins against one of the league’s best teams and one of the worst. Their next opponent is playing more like the latter. The Magic look to win their season-high seventh straight game Thursday night when they host the slumping Chicago Bulls. Orlando has matched its longest win streak of the season, giving itself a small cushion over Boston for the second seed in the Eastern Conference. It still trails first-place Cleveland by five games. The Magic beat the Lakers on Sunday in an NBA finals rematch and followed that victory with a 113-87 rout of the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday. Orlando led by 26 points at the half and cruised the rest of the way. Dwight Howard, who finished with 22 points and 15 rebounds, did most of his damage in the first half, going into the break with 18 points and 11 rebounds.

The Magic have a good chance at extending their winning streak against a Chicago team that has lost five in a row. Orlando hasn’t won seven straight since Jan. 6-17, 2009. Improved production from point guard Jameer Nelson has provided a boost for the Magic, winners of five straight at home. Nelson is averaging 12.6 points this season, but 16.4 in the last 10 games. He had 17 points and eight assists Tuesday, shooting 3 of 5 from 3-point range. Nelson and the Magic will try to take advantage of the Bulls’ defensive struggles. Chicago equaled its longest losing streak of the season Tuesday with its fifth straight defeat, 132-108 to Utah. It was the most points the team has allowed this season.

Success on the road has helped put the Portland Trail Blazers in position to make the playoffs, and it would seem visiting the woeful Golden State Warriors should only help. However, the Trail Blazers will be trying to avoid a 10th consecutive loss in Oakland on Thursday, when the Warriors open a four-game homestand following a winless road trip. The Blazers are set for back-to-back road games against two of the league’s worst teams - they visit Sacramento on Friday - but are coming off a subpar performance in an 88-81 win over the lowly Kings on Tuesday. While the Blazers failed to extend their stretch of 100-point games to eight, All-Star guard Brandon Roy knows there must be a better effort on a regular basis if they’re going to make the playoffs. They currently stand eighth in the Western Conference.

The Blazers have won five of seven away from home and have scored at least 100 in 10 straight road games, a run it should expect to continue Thursday. The Warriors allowed 118.0 points per game on an 0-5 eastern swing that ended with Monday’s 135-131 loss to New Orleans. Golden State, though, has won nine straight at home against Portland by an average of 12.2 points, dating to a 78-75 loss Nov. 3, 2004. In the teams’ last matchup at Oracle Arena, Monta Ellis had 34 points, eight assists and a career high-tying six steals in a 108-94 win Nov. 20.
