Saying LeBron James has dominated the Knicks would be a huge understatement. New York’s plan to stop him, however, may not take effect until this summer. The reigning MVP looks to help the league-leading Cleveland Cavaliers withstand Shaquille O’Neal’s absence Monday night and extend their winning streak over the struggling Knicks to eight games. James leads the league with 30.0 points per game, and is the biggest reason why the Cavaliers own the NBA’s best record. On the way to becoming one of the most dominant teams in the league, Cleveland has become accustomed to getting outstanding performances from the six-time All-Star against the Knicks.

James is averaging 35.4 points, 7.9 assists, 7.1 rebounds and 3.1 steals during the Cavaliers’ seven-game winning streak against New York, while scoring at least 50 points twice. He had 47 points with eight rebounds, eight assists and five steals to power a 113-106 win in Cleveland on Feb. 6. That production hasn’t been lost on the Knicks, who are hoping to make James their prized acquisition when he becomes a free agent this offseason. New York has long been reported to be preparing for a free-agent spending spree this summer with James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh expected to headline the list.

There are many things the Charlotte Bobcats have yet to achieve since joining the NBA in 2004, a fact Michael Jordan will hope to change as majority owner of the team. He can cross one item off the list before the deal is even official. The Bobcats can notch their first win over the Dallas Mavericks in their first game since Jordan struck a deal to buy the franchise, but the Mavericks will be looking to extend their longest winning streak of the season to eight Monday in Charlotte. Jordan agreed to purchase the financially floundering club from Bob Johnson late Friday night, although the deal still needs to be approved by the league’s other owners.

A six-time NBA champion as a player, Jordan will undoubtedly have bigger goals for the Bobcats, who’ve never reached the postseason. But he’d love to start by watching his team beat Dallas for the first time. The Mavericks are the only opponent Charlotte has never beaten, with the Bobcats losing all 11 meetings. But they were closer than ever in the most recent clash, taking host Dallas to overtime on Dec. 12 before Dirk Nowitzki hit a game-winning jumper in the final seconds to give the Mavs the 98-97 victory.

Stan Van Gundy theorized after the Orlando Magic’s latest road loss that Dwight Howard must be “absolutely dominant” for his team to win, but it responded with an easy victory in which Howard was hardly a factor. The Magic used a similar formula for success in their last visit to Philadelphia. Orlando visits the Wachovia Center on Monday night for the first time since knocking the 76ers out of the playoffs with Howard suspended, while Philadelphia finds itself needing a major turnaround to return to the postseason. The Magic seemed destined for a first-round Game 7 against the 76ers last spring after Howard, who had averaged 24.0 points and 15.8 rebounds in the first five games, was suspended for Game 6 for swinging an elbow at Samuel Dalembert.

Instead, Orlando cruised to a 114-89 victory in Philadelphia behind 29 points from Rashard Lewis and 11 points and 15 boards from backup center Marcin Gortat. Then-Sixers guard Andre Miller said then he felt the Magic were better without Howard, but this season the numbers - and Van Gundy - hardly agree. Orlando is 19-5 when Howard scores more than 20 points, with his 26-point, 10-rebound effort in a 100-93 loss at New Orleans on Friday a rare exception.

The Portland Trail Blazers have won three of four as they make a push for their second straight playoff appearance. A road matchup with the Memphis Grizzlies should give them a good opportunity to continue that surge. Portland tries for its seventh straight victory at FedEx Forum on Monday night when it faces a Grizzlies team that has not won at home in a month. The Trail Blazers are fourth in the Northwest Division and clinging to one of the last playoff spots in the Western Conference. Portland, which leads the Grizzlies by 3 1/2 games in the West, faces Memphis for the final time this season after improving to 3-1 on its five-game trip with a 110-91 victory over Minnesota on Saturday.

Blazers leading scorer Brandon Roy had just seven points, but second-year forward Nicolas Batum scored 31 points and hit five 3s - both career highs - to lift Portland. Batum has not faced the Grizzlies in 2009-10, having missed the previous matchups due to a torn right labrum that sidelined him for the first 45 games. In the teams’ last meeting at FedEx Forum on Nov. 10, Roy had 20 points and seven assists and LaMarcus Aldridge scored 16 with 12 boards to lift the Blazers to a 93-79 win - their eighth straight in the series. Portland has not lost in Memphis since Dec. 21, 2005.

Joe Johnson has been on the past four Eastern Conference All-Star teams, and this season teammate Al Horford gave the Atlanta Hawks some additional representation. Josh Smith didn’t join them for the festivities, but he certainly played like an All-Star during a February highlighted by a triple-double against the Chicago Bulls. Smith seeks a similar start to March on Monday night as the visiting Hawks look to beat the Bulls for the third time in four meetings.

Johnson again leads the Hawks in scoring, Horford is their top rebounder and Jamal Crawford is a leading candidate for the league’s Sixth Man of the Year honors, but perhaps no player is as vital to Atlanta’s success as Smith. The Hawks are 22-8 when Smith scores at least 16 points. He averaged 18.6 points and 10.0 rebounds in February - the first month of his career in which he averaged a double-double - to go with 5.4 assists, 2.3 steals and 1.4 blocks per game. Smith had 22 points, 15 boards and six assists Sunday and Johnson scored 24 in a 106-102 overtime win over Milwaukee, snapping the Bucks’ six-game winning streak.

Richard Jefferson has had a forgettable first season in San Antonio so far, but with the Spurs in the rare position of having to battle for a playoff spot, they’re hoping the veteran forward can elevate his play. If his past few games are any indication, he’s starting to do just that. Suddenly thriving in a reserve role, Jefferson looks to continue his revival Monday night when San Antonio visits the New Orleans Hornets. The Spurs felt Jefferson would be a great complement to Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili when they acquired him from New Jersey prior to draft day. Jefferson, who averaged 19.7 points over the past six seasons, has instead seen that average dwindle to 12.0 while struggling to fit in on Gregg Popovich’s team.

He’s come off the bench four times in San Antonio’s last six games, and seems to be getting the hang of his new role. Jefferson had 15 points Friday in a 109-104 loss at Houston, then scored 20 on Sunday in a 113-110 win over Phoenix. Popovich has tried all sorts of lineup combinations with newcomers Jefferson, Antonio McDyess, Keith Bogans and rookie DeJuan Blair. One configuration featured Jefferson up front alongside Duncan, taking him away from his natural small forward spot.

Favorable matchups helped the Toronto Raptors win their first two games without Chris Bosh. A more challenging stretch has reminded them how much they miss their star forward. Bosh could miss his sixth straight game as the Raptors try to avoid their fourth consecutive defeat Monday night against the struggling Houston Rockets. Sidelined the past five games due to a sprained left ankle, Bosh is listed as day-to-day. Though Toronto was able to take advantage of last-place teams New Jersey and Washington in the first two games without its leading scorer and rebounder, it has now dropped three in a row for the first time since a season-high five-game skid Nov. 25-Dec. 2.

After home losses to Portland and Cleveland, Toronto was blown out 119-99 at Oklahoma City on Sunday night. The Raptors committed 18 turnovers and allowed the Thunder to shoot 51.8 percent with six players reaching double figures. Bosh did not travel to Oklahoma City for Sunday’s game, but has not yet been ruled out for Monday. With or without Bosh, the Raptors will try to get back on track in Houston, where they’re 3-11 all-time. However, the Rockets have lost eight of their last 11 at the Toyota Center and seven of nine overall. Houston is coming off a 133-110 loss at Utah on Saturday, when it gave up its highest point total in nearly 15 years.

The Denver Nuggets and Phoenix Suns don’t lose consecutive games very often, but one of them will Monday night. Based on their recent history in Phoenix, the Nuggets face a tough task trying to avoid that fate. The Suns look to put a disheartening defeat behind them and continue their home dominance of the Nuggets as the Western Conference powers face each other in the desert. Phoenix has put on an offensive clinic while beating Denver nine straight times at home since a 111-96 loss April 7, 2004, averaging 120.0 points and shooting 50.7 percent from the field in those wins.

The Suns were also impressive offensively Sunday at San Antonio - that is, until the final minute. Amare Stoudemire had a season-high 41 points with 12 rebounds and Jason Richardson added 20 points, but Richardson blew a potential game-tying dunk on a breakaway with 41.8 seconds left. Phoenix fell 113-110, snapping a five-game winning streak. Steve Nash chipped in 18 points and 11 assists for Phoenix, but he lost his balance and couldn’t get a 3-point attempt off in the closing seconds. The defeat cooled a Suns team that had won 11 of its previous 13, improving to 14 games above .500 for the first time since the end of the 2007-08 season. Phoenix has not dropped consecutive games since falling at Utah and to Charlotte at home Jan. 25 and 26.

He responded with a brilliant game to help the Jazz beat Houston 133-110 on Saturday. The All-Star point guard had 20 points in the first quarter and totaled 35, shooting 13 of 17 from the field and 4 of 4 from 3-point range. He also added 13 assists and seven rebounds.
