Brian McCann gave the NL home-field advantage in the World Series with a clutch, two-out hit late in the All-Star game. The Atlanta Braves would love to be the beneficiaries of their catcher’s heroics. The NL’s best team also boasts the majors’ top home record, meaning Atlanta should have a good chance to pad its lead in the East when it opens a seven-game stretch at Turner Field on Thursday night with the first of four against the Milwaukee Brewers. It wasn’t a great first half in many ways for McCann, who is hitting .267 - well below his career average of .291 - and with 37 RBIs is on pace to fall well short of the 92 he averaged in his first four full major league seasons. McCann is batting .223 with two outs, but had no problem coming through with a big hit in that situation Tuesday. The five-time All-Star’s pinch-hit, three-run double in the seventh lifted the NL to a 3-1 win, snapping the league’s 13-game losing streak in the Midsummer Classic.

The Braves have a realistic opportunity to benefit from McCann’s moment. Atlanta won four of five heading into the All-Star break to push its lead over the second-place New York Mets to four games. Atlanta will open its latest homestand with a bit of a new look after a swap of shortstops. The Braves on Wednesday traded the disappointing Yunel Escobar to Toronto for Alex Gonzalez, who’s tied for sixth in the majors with 43 extra-base hits. It will be hard for Gonzalez to give Atlanta any more of a boost at Turner Field. The Braves are 30-10 at home and 19-4 there since May 19, winning eight consecutive series. They’re 22-26 on the road, but had no problem beating Milwaukee at Miller Park from May 10-12. Atlanta outscored the Brewers 28-7 to sweep the three-game set. Probable Braves starter Jair Jurrjens was sidelined then, part of a two-month stretch on the disabled list with a strained hamstring. He’s looked solid in two outings since his return, going 1-0 with a 3.27 ERA.

The Boston Red Sox were one game better than the Texas Rangers before the All-Star break, but they don’t feel nearly as good about their situation as the teams begin the second half at Fenway Park. The Rangers are still comfortably atop the AL West despite losing their last four games, while the Red Sox occupy third place in the AL East and remain without several key players as they open a four-game set with Texas on Thursday night. With a 4 1/2-game lead, Texas is in position to win the division for the first time since 1999 despite getting swept in four games at home by Baltimore last weekend. Manager Ron Washington was upbeat following Sunday’s 4-1 loss, during which the Rangers went 0 for 8 with men in scoring position and stranded 10 runners. Boston trails New York by five games and Tampa Bay by three. The Red Sox, though, may be grateful they’re even in the race following their first losing April since 1996 and a series of injuries to important players.

All-Stars Dustin Pedroia, Victor Martinez and Clay Buchholz are on the disabled list, joining right-hander Josh Beckett, catcher Jason Varitek and outfielders Jeremy Hermida and Jacoby Ellsbury. One reason the Red Sox have stayed afloat has been the resurgence of David Ortiz, who won the Home Run Derby in Anaheim on Monday night. He hit .143 with one home run in April but is batting .297 with 17 homers and 53 RBIs in 58 games since. Boston leads the majors with 481 runs - 28 more than the Rangers, who rank third on the strength of productive seasons by All-Stars Josh Hamilton and Vladimir Guerrero. Hamilton is challenging for a batting title with a .346 average, while Guerrero is second in the majors with 75 RBIs. The powerful lineups could create problems for both of Thursday’s starting pitchers - especially Boston’s Tim Wakefield, who has gone 2-5 with a 5.96 ERA in his last eight starts.

The Philadelphia Phillies emerge from the All-Star break looking to continue their momentum and make a run at a fourth consecutive NL East title. Overcoming injuries will be a major factor. The Phillies look to match their longest winning streak of the season when they open a four-game set against the struggling Chicago Cubs Thursday night at Wrigley Field. Philadelphia has won consecutive NL pennants and three straight division titles, but injuries have contributed to the Phillies ending the first half third in the NL East, 4 1/2 games behind first-place Atlanta. Philadelphia has put 12 players on the DL this year and All-Star second baseman Chase Utley isn’t expected back until next month. The Phillies, though, are gaining momentum and are in position to match a season-high five-game winning streak set April 9-14. They entered the break with a 1-0 win over Cincinnati, sweeping a four-game series from NL Central leader.

Ryan Howard, who went 0 for 2 as a designated hitter Tuesday, is tied with Milwaukee’s Corey Hart and David Wright of New York for the league lead with 65 RBIs. The first baseman also has a team-high 17 homers. Howard has done major damage against right-handers, batting .320 with 11 homers, 45 RBIs and a .551 slugging percentage. He’ll face another with the Cubs scheduled to start Ryan Dempster. The Phillies will turn to Jamie Moyer, who has lost his last two starts behind a 6.35 ERA. The 47-year-old left-hander was hit hard in his most recent trip to the mound July 7, allowing seven runs and a season high-tying three homers in 5 1-3 innings of a 7-5 loss to Atlanta. Moyer spent his first three major league seasons with the Cubs from 1986-88, and is 3-2 with a 4.27 ERA in eight starts against them.

There has already been quite a bit of shuffling atop of the AL Central this season, with the Chicago White Sox surging past the Minnesota Twins in the weeks just before the All-Star break. The clubs will get right back to the division race Thursday night, when they meet at Target Field for the opener of a four-game series. Chicago finished off the first half with a sweep of Kansas City, giving it a 25-5 record since it trailed Minnesota by 9 1/2 games June 8. The White Sox won their eighth straight Sunday, hitting five home runs in a 15-5 victory. Chicago moved a half-game ahead of Detroit and 3 1/2 up on the Twins. The White Sox’s run has been due in large part to the starting rotation getting on track, with Chicago posting 27 quality starts in the past 31 games.

John Danks, who allowed three runs or fewer in five of his last six starts, will look to build on his best outing of the season. He threw a two-hitter for his second career complete game in a 1-0 win over the Los Angeles Angels last Thursday. The left-hander will face a Twins team that stumbled into the All-Star break, losing five of seven to fall into third place. The Twins have gone 15-22 since June 1. Minnesota, however, is not in unfamiliar territory. The Twins have captured five division crowns in the last eight years and were in first place at the All-Star break during only one of those title-winning seasons.

The St. Louis Cardinals stumbled into the All-Star break, and staff ace Chris Carpenter is suddenly slumping. While a start against the Los Angeles Dodgers might be enough to help get Carpenter back on track, it could spell trouble for his team. In the opener of a four-game series Thursday night at Busch Stadium, Carpenter tries to continue his dominance of a Los Angeles team that has given the Cardinals fits lately. St. Louis got off to an 18-9 start, but has gone 29-33 since to fall one game back of NL Central-leading Cincinnati. The Cardinals entered the break losers of four of six and are 4-7 since June 30. The slide has come despite the fact Albert Pujols has five homers and 12 RBIs in his last 12 games, and Matt Holliday has five home runs and 12 RBIs in his last six. While the Cardinals are getting plenty of production from those two All-Stars, Carpenter has been slumping.

After posting a 2.70 ERA while losing just once in his first 17 starts, Carpenter has yielded 12 runs over nine innings while losing his last two. Last Thursday against Colorado, the right-hander gave up four runs and nine hits in six innings of a 4-2 loss. He has not lost three consecutive starts in a single season since dropping four in a row July 29-Aug. 13, 2002, while with Toronto. The three-time All-Star has rarely been better than when he’s faced Los Angeles. Carpenter is 5-0 with a 1.88 ERA in seven starts against the Dodgers, and 2-0 with a 0.43 ERA in three outings against them at St. Louis’ new Busch Stadium. At Dodger Stadium on June 8, Carpenter allowed six hits in seven shutout innings, but the Cardinals went on to lose 1-0. Los Angeles swept that three-game series at Chavez Ravine and also swept St. Louis in last season’s NLDS, giving the Dodgers six consecutive wins in meetings between these clubs.

Torii Hunter was certainly deserving of his All-Star nod, but his performance in that game at Angel Stadium was a small illustrator of how much the veteran and Los Angeles have struggled in recent weeks. Hunter, part of an American League team that couldn’t prevail at his home venue, leads the Angels as they try to end their struggles Thursday night in the opener of a four-game series with the Seattle Mariners. Los Angeles’ year has been marred by slugging first baseman Kendry Morales’ season-ending leg injury, but Hunter has done his best to help fill the void. The veteran center fielder is hitting .298 with 15 homers, 24 doubles and 62 RBIs, earning his fourth All-Star selection.

Hunter, though, went 0 for 2 for the AL in a 3-1 loss Tuesday, striking out with two on and two outs with a chance to tie the game in the seventh inning. He has one hit in his last 10 at-bats for the Angels, losers of eight of 10. Los Angeles scored two runs or fewer in each of the defeats. Still, Los Angeles has managed to remain in contention in the AL West, trailing first-place Texas by 4 1/2 games. Joel Pineiro, who has started in each of the Angels’ last two wins, is set to take the mound. He earned wins in six straight starts before Friday night, when he surrendered three runs in seven innings of a 6-5, 10-inning win over Oakland. The veteran right-hander has a 1.83 ERA over his last six outings. Pineiro, whose first seven seasons were with the Mariners, is 1-1 with a 5.87 ERA in one start and two relief appearances against his former team. Mariners right fielder Ichiro Suzuki, who has two hits and three walks in six plate appearances versus Pineiro, went 0 for 2 in the All-Star game.

The New York Mets are excited to finally get Carlos Beltran back. Beltran will make his season debut Thursday night when the Mets begin a four-game road series against Tim Lincecum and the San Francisco Giants. Manager Jerry Manuel said the five-time All-Star will play center field and bat cleanup Thursday against the Giants after being out following right knee surgery. Beltran played 14 games on a rehab assignment with Class-A St. Lucie before reuniting with his teammates Sunday. He said he’s pain-free and ready to go, but isn’t sure how rusty he’ll be at the plate. Beltran was limited to 81 games for New York last year due to a bone bruise. He batted .325 with 10 homers and 48 RBIs.

The slugger is 4 for 7 against Lincecum, who avoided losing a career-worst third straight start last Wednesday in a 15-2 win at Milwaukee. He allowed one run over seven innings and struck out 10. The right-hander is 0-1 with a 5.04 ERA in four starts against New York, yielding two runs over six innings in a 6-5 road win May 9. The Mets are one of two NL opponents he has never beaten. Other key New York hitters have not fared as well as Beltran against Lincecum, with David Wright going 2 for 11 with eight strikeouts and Jeff Francouer 3 for 16. Francouer will not start Thursday and his playing time will diminish with Beltran back. Manuel said that Angel Pagan, who played center in Beltran’s absence, will start Thursday in right field.
