Playing outdoors in Minnesota already seems to have a positive effect on the Chicago White Sox. Chicago looks to complete a sweep of its two-game series against the first-place Twins on Wednesday afternoon at Target Field. After losing 16 of their final 19 at the Metrodome, the White Sox were glad to see the Twins move into a new outdoor facility. Guillen and the White Sox enjoyed their first visit to spacious Target Field, winning 5-2 on Tuesday. The loss was the third in five home games for the Twins after winning nine of their first 12 at Target Field.Juan Pierre had three hits while A.J. Pierzynski and Alexei Ramirez each had two-run doubles to highlight a five-run fifth inning for Chicago, which hasn’t swept a series of any length at Minnesota since June 29-July 1, 2004.Alex Rios extended his hitting streak to 12 with a pair of hits for the White Sox, who’ve scored 19 runs while winning two of three.

Rios is batting .408 during his streak, while Pierre is 7 for 15 in his last three games. Bobby Jenks might have regained his closer role by pitching a scoreless ninth inning for his sixth save Tuesday. It came two days after he allowed four runs in the ninth of a 9-7 loss to Toronto and hours after Guillen said he would go with different closers based on the situation. After Freddy Garcia threw seven solid innings in the opener, the White Sox hope to give John Danks more support than they did in his last start. Danks allowed two runs and struck out seven in seven innings of a 2-0 loss to Toronto on Thursday. The left-hander is 4-5 with a 5.13 ERA in 14 starts against the Twins. Joe Mauer had three hits in his first start behind the plate since April 30, and Justin Morneau hit his eighth homer Tuesday for the Twins, who were 1 for 8 with runners in scoring position. Mauer is 6 for 10 against Chicago this season.

The Boston Red Sox hope they’ll eventually be a part of the race for the AL East title. On Wednesday afternoon, they’ll settle for pulling into third place. Boston would leapfrog Toronto if it can complete a second three-game sweep of the Blue Jays and cap an impressive homestand with an eighth victory in 10 games. After their first losing April since 1996, the Red Sox are finally gaining momentum in May.Although their homestand was interrupted by back-to-back blowout losses to the New York Yankees, they won a season-high four straight over the Los Angeles Angels last week and would equal that streak with a win Wednesday. They’re already 5-0 against the Blue Jays, in stark contrast with their 4-12 record versus the rest of the AL East. Boston swept three games in Toronto from April 26-28, and followed Monday’s 7-6 win with a 6-1 victory Tuesday night.

Seven strong innings from Daisuke Matsuzaka buoyed the Red Sox on Tuesday, and lowered the ERA of Boston’s disappointing rotation to 5.09. This was supposed to be Josh Beckett’s turn in the rotation for Boston, but the right-hander was first pushed back two days to give him extra time to correct his recent problems. Now, Beckett won’t even start Friday due to back spasms. Tim Wakefield, who has spent the last few weeks in the bullpen, will replace him. The 43-year-old knuckleballer started the season in the rotation but lost his spot when Matsuzaka returned from the disabled list. Wakefield wouldn’t comment on being relegated to a relief role, but Red Sox manager Terry Francona seemed to anticipate he’d be needed again.

Last week, Chicago Cubs starter Carlos Silva benefited from an offensive outburst to maintain his surprising unbeaten record. The Cubs hitters have gone back to being relatively quiet since that game. Chicago hopes to break out of its funk as it tries to avoid a season-high fifth straight loss and a three-game sweep to the visiting Florida Marlins on Wednesday afternoon. Silva has been a pleasant surprise since the Cubs acquired him from Seattle for beleaguered outfielder Milton Bradley in the offseason and earned his latest win Friday in Cincinnati despite a somewhat shaky performance. Silva allowed a season-high 10 hits and four runs over five innings, but Chicago provided him with more than enough support in a 14-7 victory. Before that performance, the Cubs had scored five runs while losing three straight in Pittsburgh. Since then, they’ve produced nine runs in four straight defeats and two in each game against the Marlins.

Another rough performance left manager Lou Piniella looking for answers but hopeful his team can turn their fortunes around soon. That lack of hitting from Piniella’s team has allowed Florida, which had lost five of six heading into Wrigley Field, to win the first two games of the series despite totaling seven runs and 11 hits. The Marlins, batting .200 since May 3, won 3-2 on Tuesday night while getting four hits and one walk. They scored all of their runs on homers from Cody Ross and Gaby Sanchez. Florida hitters might not need much offense if Chris Volstad can continue his strong start to this month. After getting tagged for seven runs April 25 in Colorado, Volstad posted a 1.69 ERA in back-to-back wins over Washington. He has a 2.81 ERA in four career starts against Chicago but hasn’t recorded a decision.

Roy Halladay is well established as one of baseball’s best pitchers, but after spending 12 years without a trip to the postseason in Toronto, he’s hoping he can change that with the Philadelphia Phillies. While October is a long way off, he can cross another first off his list Wednesday afternoon. Halladay’s 295th career start will be his first in his hometown of Denver, where he’ll look to become the majors’ first seven-game winner as the Phillies and Rockies open a day-night doubleheader after Tuesday’s game was postponed by rain. Halladay didn’t sniff the postseason with the Blue Jays, but Philadelphia acquired him to have an ace to turn to in the playoffs. If he keeps pitching as well as he has in his first seven NL starts, the Phillies figure to have a great chance of making it to a third consecutive World Series. Halladay followed a three-hit shutout of New York on May 1 by holding St. Louis to two runs - one earned - while striking out nine over seven innings in a 7-2 win Thursday.

Though manager Charlie Manuel almost removed Halladay following an Albert Pujols RBI single in the seventh, Halladay wanted to stay in, and he got Matt Holliday to ground out. Halladay faced the Rockies once, tossing a two-hit shutout in Toronto on June 7, 2002. He grew up in Arvada, just northwest of Denver. One Rockies player has had a fair amount of success against the former Cy Young Award winner. Jason Giambi is a .314 hitter in 70 at-bats versus Halladay, and only Boston’s David Ortiz has homered more times than Giambi has against him. Perhaps that will earn him another start at first base Wednesday, particularly considering Giambi had three hits and three RBIs in Monday’s 9-5 series-opening loss after starting the season 2 for 22.

The last time the Tampa Bay Rays won a series in Anaheim, David Price hadn’t even started high school. Price will try to help the Rays end that drought when he matches up against Los Angeles Angels ace Jered Weaver in the finale of a three-game set Wednesday. The Rays continued their struggles in Anaheim with a 5-4, 11-inning loss in Monday’s series opener, but ended a six-game slide there with a 7-2 victory Tuesday night. Jeff Niemann took a shutout into the eighth inning and Evan Longoria homered and drove in four as the Rays won for the second time in 16 games at Angel Stadium since former Los Angeles bench coach Joe Maddon became Tampa Bay’s manager. The Rays have lost 12 straight series in Anaheim since splitting a four-game set April 27-30, 2000. Tampa’s last series win there came May 14-16, 1999.

Carl Crawford ended a 1 for 18 slide with three straight singles Tuesday, as the top four hitters in Tampa Bay’s order went 7 for 16 with six RBIs. The Rays snapped a season-high three-game skid and improved the majors’ best record to 23-10. A staff that boasts an AL-best 2.80 ERA is the biggest reason for Tampa Bay’s fast start, and Price may be emerging as its ace. The 24-year-old left-hander was outstanding again in a 4-1 victory at Oakland on Friday. He allowed one unearned run and three hits - all singles - in 7 2-3 innings while striking out six and walking four. He has held the opposition without an earned run in two of his last three outings, compiling a 0.79 ERA over 22 2-3 innings with 16 strikeouts. Price is 0-1 with a 5.23 ERA in two starts against the Angels, losing at Anaheim on Aug. 11. Los Angeles looks to win its second straight series behind Weaver, by far its most reliable starter. The right-hander took a no-hitter into the seventh inning at Seattle on Friday, eventually yielding two hits through 7 1-3 innings in an 8-0 victory. He struck out seven, walked three and outpitched Mariners star Felix Hernandez.

Alonzo Powell’s familiarity with Seattle’s hitters played an important role in his promotion to hitting coach. Still, even Powell might be surprised with how quickly the Mariners have responded since his arrival. Looking strong at the plate in their first two games with Powell, the Mariners look to earn yet another win over the lowly Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday night. Seattle has gotten quality pitching, posting a 3.50 ERA, but poor production from its lineup has been holding it back. The Mariners have scored an AL-low 107 runs. Seattle fired hitting coach Alan Cockrell on Sunday and gave the job to Powell, who held the same position at Triple-A Tacoma, previously working with a number of current Mariners. Seattle has scored 13 runs in winning its two games since Powell took over, reaching double figures in hits both times. The Mariners got two hits each from four players in a 5-1 win over the Orioles on Tuesday night to open this three-game series, improving to 4-0 against Baltimore.

Ichiro Suzuki was one of those players, and the nine-time All-Star is 7 for 13 over his last three contests. He is batting .390 in 38 road games against the Orioles. Seattle had lost its previous eight before its back-to-back wins. If Powell can help the Mariners become respectable at the plate, their pitching might give them a chance to bounce back from their terrible start. Cliff Lee earned his first win with Seattle on Tuesday, and the team’s starters have a 1.66 ERA over their last three games. Ryan Rowland-Smith, who has been one of Seattle’s few ineffective pitchers, is set to take the mound. He is 0-1 with an 8.22 ERA in his last three starts. The left-hander gave up a season-worst six runs and seven hits in 4 1-3 innings of an 8-0 loss to Tampa Bay on Thursday night. This is Rowland-Smith’s first start versus the Orioles. He is 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA in four relief appearances against them. Baltimore will counter with Brad Bergesen, who has won two straight starts and is coming off a particularly promising outing. He allowed six hits in 6 2-3 innings of a 2-0 win over Minnesota on Thursday.

Derek Holland said problems with his offspeed pitches was one of the main reasons why he struggled at the end of last season. After an injury this spring cost him a spot in the Texas Rangers’ starting rotation, Holland has seemed to regain his form in the minors. While filling in for an injured teammate, he’ll try to carry that over into his season debut and help the Rangers avoid a sixth straight home loss to the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday night. Holland went 8-13 with a 6.12 ERA in 2009 but had a 10.19 ERA while dropping six of seven starts to conclude his rookie season. The left-hander said his changeup wasn’t effective over those final starts as he tried to experiment with throwing a slider and a curve. He’s been sticking with the slider more lately while going 4-1 with a 0.93 ERA in six starts at Oklahoma City. He also has 37 strikeouts and seven walks over 38 2-3 innings with the RedHawks.

A sprained knee played a big part in Holland starting this season in Triple-A, but he’s been given an opportunity to return to the majors with Matt Harrison going on the disabled list. The Rangers are hoping a strong effort from Holland will help them get back in the win column following a 7-6 loss in 13 innings to the A’s on Tuesday night. Daric Barton’s two-out RBI single ended a back-and-forth affair and helped Oakland, winners in five of six, move into a tie with Texas atop the AL West. The A’s will try to take the lead in the division and win four straight for the second time this season behind Gio Gonzalez, who hasn’t allowed a run in 9 2-3 career innings against the Rangers. That includes a 6-0 home victory Aug. 4 in which the left-hander struck out seven and threw a three-hitter over 6 2-3 innings. Holland was on the wrong end of that game in his only career start against Oakland, but it was Gonzalez who suffered a hard-luck defeat Friday despite a third straight quality outing.

8:10 pm EDT Wed May 12, 2010

The Cleveland Indians and Kansas City Royals finished last year tied in the AL Central cellar, so it’s no surprise they’re the bottom two teams in the division again in 2010. It’s also no shock that the sputtering Royals appear to have the biggest problems. Cleveland’s Fausto Carmona will try to send Kansas City to a seventh straight loss as the teams continue their three-game set Wednesday night at Kauffman Stadium. Each club lost 97 games in 2009, and both are currently on pace to do even worse this year. But while the Indians have snapped a five-game losing streak with back-to-back victories, including Tuesday night’s 8-2 win in the series opener, Kansas City’s woes only seem to be getting worse. The Royals, the only team in the majors to lose more than 600 games since the start of 2004, rank last in the AL with a 5.21 ERA, a problem compounded by an offense that has totaled nine runs in the last four games. They’ve also made an error in seven of their last eight contests. They closed an 11-game road trip with five consecutive defeats, and a return home did not immediately help.

Kyle Davies will try to snap the skid and bounce back from by far his worst start of the year. The right-hander had posted four quality starts in his first five outings, but he gave up nine runs in four-plus innings of the Royals’ 13-12 loss to Texas on Thursday. Carmona had a more encouraging outing last week, using three double plays to work around seven hits and four walks while holding Toronto to two runs in 6 1-3 innings last Wednesday. The Blue Jays scored three runs in the ninth to win the game 5-4. After going 4-0 with a 3.46 ERA in his first eight appearances against the Royals, Carmona has run into major problems the last three times he’s faced Kansas City. He’s 0-2 with a 7.79 ERA in that stretch, walking 11 in 17 1-3 innings. Carmona hopes for some help from an offense that has totaled 15 runs in the Indians’ last two games, although it still ranks among the bottom five in the majors in runs and home runs.

With their lead atop the NL Central shrinking, the St. Louis Cardinals may be especially happy to see Houston Astros starter Wandy Rodriguez. The Cardinals have accounted for 10 of the left-hander’s 56 career losses, and they’ll try to beat him for the second time in 2010 as the teams continue their series in St. Louis on Wednesday night. Cincinnati has won four in a row to pull within two games of the first-place Cardinals, who’ve dropped five of seven. They’ve been held to three or fewer runs in each of the losses in that stretch, getting shut out twice. St. Louis had a 2-0 lead in Tuesday night’s series opener against the NL-worst Astros before allowing four unearned runs in the seventh inning of a 6-3 defeat. Manager Tony La Russa partially blamed the Cardinals’ offense, which hit into two double plays and stranded eight runners.

Although reigning NL MVP Albert Pujols went 2 for 4, he was held without an RBI for the fourth straight game and has one in his last eight. Cleanup hitter Matt Holliday drove in a run but has four RBIs in his last 18 games. Rodriguez probably doesn’t feel comfortable after losing his last three starts against St. Louis, slipping to 3-10 with a 4.17 ERA in 16 meetings. Rodriguez doesn’t have more than six losses against any other opponent. He gave up four runs in 4 1-3 innings of a 5-0 loss at St. Louis on April 12. Pujols had been 5 for 31 without a homer against Rodriguez coming into that game, but the slugger went 2 for 2 with a three-run homer and a walk. Rodriguez made several mistakes against Arizona on Thursday, allowing nine hits and five runs in 3 2-3 innings of a 6-3 loss.

9:40 pm EDT Wed May 12, 2010

A series at Chase Field has helped the Los Angeles Dodgers’ lineup snap out of a slump. The Arizona Diamondbacks haven’t been nearly as fortunate in the desert. Coming off one of their best performances at the plate this season, the Dodgers look to sweep a three-game series with the struggling Diamondbacks on Wednesday night. Los Angeles totaled two runs in its last two games before visiting Arizona, but ended the rut with a 7-2 victory in the series opener Monday night. The Dodgers then clinched their first road series win of the season Tuesday by routing the Diamondbacks 13-3. Russell Martin had two hits, including a three-run homer, to extend his hitting streak to seven games for Los Angeles. Martin also has two home runs and five RBIs in his last three road games. Dodgers first baseman James Loney is 6 for 10 with a homer, two doubles and four RBIs in this series after going 0 for 13 over his previous four games. Loney is batting .421 in 27 career games at Arizona.

The Diamondbacks, meanwhile, are battling through their worst stretch at the plate this season. Arizona has lost the first five games of a six-game homestand, scoring two runs or fewer in each contest and striking out 49 times. Tied with Kelly Johnson for the club lead in home runs with 10, Reynolds is 3 for 21 over his last six games and 3 for 18 in his last six home games against the Dodgers. Reynolds is also 1 for 16 with eight strikeouts against Hiroki Kuroda, Wednesday’s probable starter for the Dodgers. Kuroda struggled in his last outing, though, giving up five runs and nine hits in 5 1-3 innings without receiving a decision in a 6-5 win over Colorado on Friday night. The right-hander had surrendered three earned runs or fewer in each of his previous five starts.

10:15 pm EDT Wed May 12, 2010

Whether it’s at home or on the road, the San Diego Padres have gotten the best of the San Francisco Giants this season. The first-place Padres look for a fifth straight win over the Giants on Wednesday night. After sweeping a three-game set from the Giants at home April 19-21, San Diego won 3-2 on Tuesday at San Francisco in the series opener between the NL West frontrunners. Three of the Padres’ four wins over San Francisco have been decided by one run. David Eckstein had a two-run single and four relievers held the Giants scoreless over 4 1-3 innings as San Diego improved to 3-1 on a six-game road trip. San Diego has allowed six runs against the Giants this season, including two by a bullpen that’s among the best in the majors with a 2.58 ERA. That solid pitching has enabled the Padres to provide just enough offense to keep beating the Giants. San Diego has scored 12 runs and hit .235 against the Giants this season. The Padres were the recipient of 12 San Francisco walks but stranded 15 runners Tuesday.

Eckstein, however, is 7 for 13 in his last four games and batting .318 with six RBIs in his last six against the Giants. The Padres scored all their runs Tuesday against Barry Zito, who allowed seven walks. They could face a stiffer challenge with Matt Cain on the mound. After giving up seven runs in his first two starts, Cain has yielded six in his last four and two with five hits in 15 innings to win his last two outings. Coming off an eight-inning, one-hit effort against Colorado on May 1, Cain took a no-hitter into the sixth before allowing two runs and four hits in seven innings of a 6-3 win at Florida on Thursday. Cain is 4-6 with a 2.91 ERA in 19 starts versus the Padres. He allowed two runs in six innings of a 3-2, 10-inning loss at San Diego on April 19. San Diego’s Clayton Richard, who gave up one run in 6 1-3 innings in that game against Cain and the Giants last month, takes the ball in this contest.
