After missing the first 3 1/2 months of the season while recovering from elbow surgery, Edinson Volquez has been a bit shaky since returning to the Cincinnati Reds’ rotation. A start against the struggling Chicago Cubs could be a good way for him to continue getting back on track. Volquez, who has shut down the Cubs in the past, looks to help the NL Central-leading Reds win a third straight game Saturday at Wrigley Field. Cincinnati defeated Chicago 3-0 in the series opener Friday, winning for the seventh time in nine games. Ryan Hanigan hit a two-run homer and Brandon Phillips added a run-scoring single for the surprising Reds, who are 14 games over .500 for the first time since going 96-67 in 1999.

Cincinnati, 5-10 versus the Cubs last year, is 8-3 against them this season. The Reds have won six of the last seven matchups, limiting Chicago to 13 runs. Cincinnati isn’t the only team that has given the Cubs problems, as Chicago has plated two runs or fewer in five of its last nine. The Cubs, losers of eight of nine, are now set to face Volquez, who has posted a 0.75 ERA in winning both career starts against them. Volquez hasn’t faced Chicago since his All-Star season of 2008, as injuries have limited him to 13 starts since. Making his fourth start since undergoing Tommy John surgery last August, Volquez was again wild in a 2-1 win over Atlanta on Sunday. The right-hander walked five and hit a batter, but yielded one run and three hits while striking out seven over five innings.

After a successful series against one AL East contender, the Toronto Blue Jays are off to a good start against another. The Blue Jays look to hand the second-place Tampa Bay Rays a season-high fourth straight loss Saturday afternoon at Rogers Centre. Fourth in the division and 10 1/2 games behind the first-place Yankees, Toronto took two of three at New York before winning 2-1 in Friday’s series opener against Tampa Bay. Lyle Overbay doubled home the go-ahead run in the seventh inning as the Blue Jays won for the fifth time in 13 home games against the Rays, who are one-half game behind New York. Though Tampa Bay has won 10 of 14, it’s scored eight runs during the three-game skid with all but two coming in one inning of an 8-6 loss to Minnesota on Thursday.

Sean Rodriguez had two hits and Willy Aybar an RBI on Friday for the Rays, who are batting .219 in their last 14 games. Tampa Bay will be without first baseman Carlos Pena for more than a week after he was placed on the disabled list with a foot injury Friday. Pena, who had not played since last Saturday, is hitting .212 but has a team-leading 23 home runs. All-Star left fielder Carl Crawford is expected to be in the lineup Saturday after being rested in the opener. Crawford is 2 for 16 in his last four games and 7 for 31 against the Blue Jays this season. Crawford and the Rays hope to break out Saturday when they get their first look at Toronto’s Brad Mills. The left-hander was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas to take the place of Jesse Litsch, who will have season-ending hip surgery.

Amid a mostly disappointing season for Rich Harden, his return from the disabled list last weekend could be classified as a major bright spot. The top highlight of 2010 for the Texas Rangers right-hander, however, came against the team that drafted him. Harden tries for a repeat of his first start against the Oakland Athletics as he returns to the Bay Area on Saturday looking to pitch the Rangers to a fourth consecutive win. A healthy Harden could help Texas lock up the AL West title, an outcome that appears even more likely after extending its lead to 9 1/2 games over second-place Oakland with a 5-1 win in Friday night’s series opener. This is the Rangers’ biggest division lead since 1999, also the last year they won the West.

Harden is unlikely to fall victim to complacency. He has struggled with control and efficiency this year, walking 45 in 72 innings, and he spent seven weeks on the disabled list with a strained left gluteal muscle. He was activated last Saturday, posting seven strong innings to outduel Dan Haren in a 2-1 win over the Angels. Harden was even better at Oakland on May 3, allowing two hits in seven scoreless innings and striking out nine without a walk in a 4-2 win. It was the first time he had started against the A’s, who traded him to the Chicago Cubs on July 8, 2008, after Harden spent his first 5 1/2 seasons with Oakland.

The Boston Red Sox are doing their best to make the AL East race a three-team affair.The Red Sox will try to hand CC Sabathia his first home loss in more than a year Saturday when they continue a four-game road series against the New York Yankees. Boston won 6-3 on Friday, pulling within five games of the first-place Yankees and 4 1/2 of Tampa Bay in the East. Clay Buchholz pitched into the eighth inning, and David Ortiz and Ryan Kalish homered for the Red Sox, who have won eight of 11 overall and four straight on the road. Ortiz has hit safely in 14 of his last 15 games, batting .317 with six homers and 14 RBIs in that span. That kind of production is sorely needed, as Boston is missing Kevin Youkilis for the rest of the year with a thumb injury while the timetable remains murky for the return of former AL MVP Dustin Pedroia.

The Red Sox will try to saddle Sabathia with his first regular-season loss at Yankee Stadium since July 2, 2009, against Seattle. He’s 12-0 with a 2.25 ERA in 17 outings in the Bronx since, not counting last year’s postseason. The ace left-hander, though, has dropped his last two outings overall and will also be trying to avoid losing three straight starts for the first time since April 5-16, 2008, with Cleveland. He gave up three runs over 6 2-3 innings in Sunday’s 3-0 road loss to the Rays. Sabathia, who had won nine straight decisions before the losses, has issued 14 walks in his last four starts.

Troy Tulowitzki came into the Colorado Rockies’ series against the Pittsburgh Pirates with an impressive average since returning from the disabled list, but it’s harder to find a hotter hitter than Carlos Gonzalez. The Rockies’ two best hitters look to build on their respective three-hit performances and help Colorado earn its seventh win in nine games Saturday night at PNC Park. With Tulowitzki - who missed six weeks due to a fractured left wrist - back for the past 10 games, Colorado is clicking again at the plate. The Rockies have hit .330 with 11 homers while winning six of eight to stay within striking distance in the NL wild-card race.

Tulowitzki is hitting .400 with 10 RBIs since his return, while Gonzalez seems to keep matching the feats of his All-Star teammate. Each had three hits in Friday’s 6-3 win over the Pirates, with Gonzalez homering early and Tulowitzki driving in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning to snap the Rockies’ seven-game road skid.Gonzalez is batting .439 with seven homers since Tulowitzki - a .488 hitter in 11 games at PNC Park - returned to the cleanup spot. Pittsburgh’s Ross Ohlendorf won’t be eager to face either hitter, and may be happy to merely get through a start without incident. Ohlendorf lasted two-thirds of an inning July 28 at Colorado, leaving after taking a Tulowitzki line drive to the head.

The Philadelphia Phillies used one big inning to beat the New York Mets in this series opener. Johan Santana knows all too well about the Phillies’ ability to put runs on the board in a hurry. Santana’s last visit to Philadelphia resulted in the worst start of his career, a performance the Mets ace can avenge Saturday night as he attempts to snap the red-hot Phillies’ 12-game home winning streak. Philadelphia won the final four games of its six-game road trip and returned home Friday night having won 11 straight at Citizens Bank Park. That streak was in jeopardy with New York up 2-1 in the eighth inning, but the Mets bullpen blew up from there. Seven straight hitters reached base to start the inning as Philadelphia rallied for a 7-5 victory, extending its longest home winning streak since a 16-game run at Veterans Stadium in 1991.

It’s been all or nothing for the NL champions against New York this season. Philadelphia didn’t score during a three-game series at Citi Field from May 25-27, but Friday marked its third straight home game against the Mets with at least six runs in one inning. Santana was on the mound for one of them. The Phillies scored nine times in the fourth inning in an 11-5 win May 2, chasing the two-time Cy Young Award winner after 3 2-3 innings as he was charged with a career-high 10 runs - including four homers. Santana’s career ERA against the Phillies, 2.90 coming in, rose to 4.11. After going 3-0 with a 0.71 ERA in his first five outings of July, Santana has been much less effective lately. He gave up seven runs over 5 2-3 innings in a 13-inning loss July 28 against St. Louis, then yielded four runs over seven innings in a 4-1 loss at Atlanta on Monday despite striking out a season-high 11.

Buck Showalter’s unbeaten start as Baltimore Orioles manager continued through the opener of a series with the Chicago White Sox. With the way Chicago’s Gavin Floyd has pitched lately, the Orioles will be hard-pressed to keep that run going. The right-hander will try add to his string of impressive efforts and deny the Orioles a season-high fifth straight win Saturday night at Camden Yards. Adam Jones’ two-out single drove home the winning run in Friday night’s 2-1 victory in 10 innings, and Baltimore improved to 4-0 under Showalter. Showalter began his managerial career 6-0 with the New York Yankees in 1992, but he’s got a long way to go to match Joe Torre’s major league-record 13-0 start with Atlanta in 1982.

Another strong outing from Floyd might prevent Showalter from leading Baltimore to its longest winning streak since a five-game run from June 17-21, 2009. The 6-foot-6 right-hander has not yielded more than one earned run in six consecutive starts and is 5-2 with a 1.06 ERA in his last 11. He carried a perfect game into the sixth inning Sunday as he beat Oakland, finishing with one run and four hits allowed over seven frames in a 4-1 win. Floyd is 1-1 with a 2.53 ERA in three all-time starts against the Orioles - none since 2008 - and 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA in two outings at Camden Yards. He’ll face a team hitting .324 in four games under Showalter - 65 points higher than its season average - but the White Sox lineup could be in for a big day of its own against a struggling Kevin Millwood.

One year ago on this day, the Cleveland Indians traded Carl Pavano to the Minnesota Twins. Given the way Pavano has pitched in 2010, the woeful Indians might harbor a little regret over that deal. After having an eight-game win streak snapped earlier this week, the Twins right-hander will try to bounce back Saturday night in his first matchup this year against his former team. Following four injury-plagued and ineffective years with the Yankees, Pavano signed with Cleveland before the start of last season and was 9-8 with a 5.37 ERA when the Indians sent him to Minnesota on Aug. 7. He was 5-4 with a 4.64 ERA in 12 starts with the Twins, who rallied to make the postseason.

Pavano has experienced a resurgence this year, going 13-7 with a 3.32 ERA, and most of those wins have come over the past two months. However, he comes into this start after suffering his first loss since June 3. Pavano gave up four runs and nine hits over six innings in Monday’s 4-2 defeat in Tampa. The loss is among three through five games of a road trip that concludes against AL Central-leading Chicago, which leads the Twins by 1 1/2 games. Their latest defeat on the 10-game trek included some controversy, as Jim Thome’s apparent home run in the ninth inning was ruled a double and upheld on replay. Alexi Casilla followed with a tying two-run single, but Matt LaPorta homered in the bottom half to give Cleveland a 7-6 win.

The veteran left-hander hopes to turn things around and avoid a fifth straight loss when he is expected to come off the disabled list Saturday night to face the struggling Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park. After spending almost a month on the DL with shoulder fatigue, Kazmir is set to make his first start since allowing a career-high 13 runs in five innings of a 15-1 loss at Oakland on July 10. Kazmir had a 13.73 ERA while losing a career-high four consecutive starts before going on the DL, but said he felt great after a 35-pitch bullpen session Wednesday. Kazmir is 3-4 with a 4.15 ERA in 10 starts against the Tigers but 1-0 with a 2.31 ERA in two this season. He will try to help the Angels build on Friday’s 4-2 win in this series opener.

Los Angeles had high hopes of winning the AL West for the fourth straight time but is quickly falling out of contention after losing 11 of 15. However, Maicer Izturis had three hits and Torii Hunter hit a two-run homer Friday as the Angels snapped a five-game skid against Detroit and three-game slide overall. Hunter, who was ejected after being called out on strikes in the eighth inning, is 11 for 20 with two homers and six RBIs in his last five games. He is a lifetime .389 hitter against Jeremy Bonderman, who looks to win his third straight decision while trying to help the Tigers avoid a fourth consecutive loss Saturday. The right-hander allowed a run in 6 2-3 innings of a 7-1 win over the White Sox in the second game of a doubleheader Tuesday. He is 2-0 with a 4.94 ERA in his last four starts.

The San Francisco Giants and Atlanta Braves have combined for 10 runs in the first two games of their four-game series, and it’s difficult to imagine anything but another pitchers’ duel Saturday night. San Francisco’s Matt Cain and Atlanta’s Tim Hudson will each be looking to win a fourth consecutive decision as the right-handers square off at Turner Field. The Giants and Braves would qualify for the playoffs if the season ended Friday, and this series could be mistaken for low-scoring postseason baseball with each team totaling 12 hits and claiming a 3-2 win. After Atlanta’s Jair Jurrjens outdueled San Francisco ace Tim Lincecum on Thursday, the Giants bounced back with an 11-inning victory Friday night.

San Francisco scored the tying run in the ninth and the go-ahead run in the 11th without a hit in either inning, with three walks and Pat Burrell’s sacrifice fly supplying the winning margin. The Giants moved within one game of first-place San Diego in the NL West, and they lead Philadelphia and St. Louis by 1 1/2 games in the wild-card chase. Atlanta has seen its NL East lead slip to one game over the Phillies, its smallest cushion since June 27. Some of the Braves’ biggest bats are struggling. Rookie Jason Heyward is 3 for 29 with no RBIs in his last seven games, while Troy Glaus is batting .125 since July 20.

Jake Westbrook pitched well enough to win his debut with the St. Louis Cardinals, but came up short. He might have to be even better this time around if Florida All-Star Josh Johnson can regroup from a rare rough outing. Westbrook tries again for his first victory with his new team as the Cardinals look to hand Johnson and the Marlins a season-high sixth straight loss Saturday night. Acquired by St. Louis from Cleveland last Saturday in a three-team deal that sent Ryan Ludwick to San Diego, Westbrook did not factor in the decision after allowing two runs and four hits while striking out seven in six innings of a 9-4 home loss to Houston on Monday.

It’s been six years since the two-time 15-game winner faced Florida. On June 9, 2004, the right-hander allowed one run and six hits in eight innings of an 8-1 win for Cleveland. Westbrook might have to pitch at least that well to give his new team a chance against Johnson, who still has the lowest ERA in the majors despite struggling in his last start. Johnson allowed as many runs as he’d yielded in his previous five outings combined when he gave up five in 5 2-3 innings of a 5-4 loss Sunday at San Diego. It was the first time in 20 starts that Johnson didn’t pitch at least six innings.

Brett Myers has already set a Houston Astros franchise record by completing at least six innings in 22 consecutive starts to begin the season. His worst one, however, came at Miller Park. Undefeated since a loss at Milwaukee in late June, Myers will look to win a fourth consecutive decision Saturday when the Astros continue their series with the Brewers. A remarkably consistent season recently earned Myers a two-year contract extension with Houston. Not only has the right-hander pitched deep into games, but he’s also almost always given the Astros a chance to win, holding opponents to four runs or fewer in 21 of his 22 outings. The lone exception came in Wisconsin on June 29, when Myers allowed four home runs - including two by Prince Fielder - and seven runs in six innings of a 7-5 defeat.

Myers has quickly recovered, allowing a total of two homers in six subsequent starts. He’s 3-0 with a 1.85 ERA and a .170 opponent batting average in that stretch. The Astros held Milwaukee to three total runs while winning their next four games against the Brewers after Myers’ loss. They appeared en route to a fifth consecutive victory over their NL Central rivals Friday night, but closer Matt Lindstrom blew a three-run lead in the ninth inning and Milwaukee won 6-5 on Fielder’s two-run walk-off hit. The Brewers will have Randy Wolf on the mound as they look for a fourth win in five games. They’ll have a good chance if Wolf pitches like he has in his first two starts against Houston this season.

The San Diego Padres’ woes at the plate and at Chase Field could cost them first place in the NL West. If they can’t end those struggles Saturday night, the Padres may lose sole possession of the division lead for the first time since mid-June as they meet the last-place Arizona Diamondbacks. With a 3-5 record since July 29, San Diego has seen its lead in the West dwindle to one game over San Francisco. The Padres have been alone in first place every day since being tied with Los Angeles on June 17. They produced just three hits in their latest defeat, 2-1 on Friday night in the opener of this three-game set. San Diego has hit .207 over its last eight games. Miguel Tejada went 0 for 4 on Friday as his average dropped to .188 since being acquired from Baltimore on July 29. Adrian Gonzalez is mired in a 2-for-20 slump and has failed to drive in a run in six straight games.

The Padres, who have won six of seven overall against the Diamondbacks, will try to turn things around against Rodrigo Lopez, who is 1-4 with a 5.30 ERA in his last six starts. The right-hander is 0-2 with a 4.80 ERA in two career starts against Padres, including an 8-5 loss July 17. His counterpart in that game, Clayton Richard, will start again Saturday searching for his third straight win and sixth in nine starts. The left-hander allowed a season-high 10 hits and four runs in 5 1-3 innings Monday, but he benefited from a rare offensive outburst from his teammates in a 10-5 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

It wasn’t long ago that the Kansas City Royals led the majors in batting, but many of the players responsible for that production are no longer on the team - and their offense has suffered. The Royals look to get their sputtering offense untracked Saturday night when they continue a weekend series against the Seattle Mariners. Kansas City has a .278 average to rank second in the majors, but now the Royals are clearly back in a rebuilding phase. They designated veteran Jose Guillen for assignment on Thursday, even though the slugger led the team with 16 homers and 62 RBIs. Top hitter David DeJesus is out for the season with a thumb injury, and Scott Podsednik, Rick Ankiel and Alberto Callaspo have all been traded. The result is unproven young players like Gregor Blanco and Kila Ka’aihue getting chances to play, and Kansas City has totaled seven runs in losing three of four to start this nine-game West Coast road trip.

The Royals lineup is further depleted this weekend since former Mariners shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt is expected to miss the series to be with his wife in Miami at the delivery of their first child. Kansas City fell 7-1 on Friday as Seattle starter Luke French scattered nine hits in eight innings. The Mariners ended a three-game slide against the Royals and beat reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Zack Greinke for the first time. Seattle scored its most runs since an 8-1 win over Detroit on July 4. Ryan Langerhans homered among his three hits and Chone Figgins drove in three runs. Bruce Chen will start for Kansas City. He gave up three runs over five innings Sunday to earn a 5-4 win over Baltimore after going 0-3 with a 7.97 ERA in his previous four outings.

There’s no question the Los Angeles Dodgers could use a bat like Adam Dunn’s in the middle of their lineup. Right now, they’d settle for not having to pitch to the Washington Nationals slugger. The NL home run leader hit two more as the Nationals took the opener of a three-game series at Dodger Stadium, and he’ll look to continue his success against Hiroki Kuroda(notes) on Saturday night as Washington tries to further spoil Los Angeles’ critical homestand. The Nationals didn’t deal Dunn prior to the July 31 trading deadline but placed him on waivers this week - a common practice after Aug. 1 - leaving open the possibility of negotiating a deal with the team that wins that claim.

Someone put in a claim, but that team is still not known. The Dodgers could certainly use him, considering they’ve averaged 2.5 runs in 22 games since the All-Star break. Dunn hit a pair of three-run homers in Friday’s 6-3 win, giving him six in six games. While Dunn tied a career high with six RBIs, Los Angeles - 2-3 on its seven-game homestand - has scored six runs once since the break. Dunn is 6 for 14 with four homers and four walks against the Dodgers this season. Dunn hasn’t faced Kuroda in 2010, but he’s had lots of success in eight plate appearances against the right-hander, going 3 for 4 with a homer, two doubles and four walks. Kuroda is 1-5 with a 4.96 ERA in his last six starts, and his most recent outing was particularly ineffective. He gave up five runs and seven hits while lasting four innings in a 10-5 loss to NL West-leading San Diego on Monday.
