The Flyers know how difficult it is to finish a playoff series, having overcome a 3-0 deficit against Boston in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Their opponent has been resilient in this postseason, too. The Montreal Canadiens have come back twice to win a series, going 5-0 in elimination games. The Flyers can advance to the finals for the first time since 1997 with a victory in Game 5 on Monday night at home in front of their raucous, orange-clad fans. The Canadiens got in as the eighth seed and then knocked off Presidents’ Trophy-winning Washington after falling behind 3-1. Montreal trailed Pittsburgh 3-2 before advancing past the defending Stanley Cup champions in the second round. The Canadiens are hoping for one more comeback after an impressive run just to get this far. The Flyers bounced back from a 5-1 loss in Game 3 with a dominant defensive performance in Saturday’s 3-0 victory in Montreal. Michael Leighton stopped 17 shots to become the 13th NHL goalie to have three shutouts in one series. Leighton is 5-1 with a 1.37 goals-against average since replacing the injured Brian Boucher.

He had a relatively easy time in Game 4 because the defense, particularly from the forwards, was outstanding. The Flyers blocked 27 shots in front of Leighton, who has a .951 save percentage in these playoffs. The Flyers, who haven’t won the Stanley Cup since 1975, are 18-2 with a 3-1 series lead. None of that matters to the Canadiens.

The team that charged into the Eastern Conference finals with 14 straight wins rolled over Saturday night when it lost its hustle—and its third game in a row—against the Boston Celtics. Another loss Monday night would give Boston a sweep and end Orlando’s hopes for a second consecutive berth in the NBA finals. Down 7-0 in the first two minutes. Trailing by 16 points in the first quarter. Never closer than 14 after that. And behind by 32 before Boston coach Doc Rivers began clearing his bench in the fourth quarter. When the 94-71 rout was complete, the Magic could hardly believe their predicament. They had the second-best regular season record in the East, then swept Charlotte and Atlanta in the first two rounds to make it to the conference finals. The Celtics are focusing simply on one game. A win Monday night would send them to the NBA finals with a chance for their second championship in three years and their 18th overall.

Boston has won the first three games in 10 other series; it won four of those in four games and the other six in five. This year, teams took 3-0 leads in five series that have been completed and swept four of them. In the other, Boston beat Miami in five games. Rivers is among coaches who have been ahead in such series who would prefer that his players ignore those numbers. The Boston Bruins led the Philadelphia Flyers 3-0 in this year’s NHL Eastern semifinals then lost the next four, ending their colossal collapse in the same building where the Celtics and Magic will play Monday. But the Bruins had key injuries and a lack of discipline during important stretches. The Celtics are as healthy as they’ve been all season and playing extremely coordinated team defense.

Chicago White Sox vs Cleveland Indians Live Streaming

Since they swept the Chicago White Sox last month, wins have been rare for the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field. The Indians are hoping another visit from the White Sox will help them launch a much-needed run. Cleveland will try to open its three-game series by recording a sixth straight win over its AL Central rivals for the first time in seven seasons Monday night. The Indians used Jhonny Peralta’s sixth-inning RBI single Sunday against Cincinnati to snap a season-high, six-game slide, and the 4-3 win was their third in 13 home games since April 18. The next game has the Indians, owners of the AL’s worst home record, facing a team they’ve had considerable success against this season. Cleveland opened by taking two of three in Chicago then won three straight at home over the White Sox for the first time in four years April 16-18. Chicago manager Ozzie Guillen, however, insists his club is a different team heading into this meeting.

The White Sox have improved on the road in splitting their last 10 following a 2-7 start and won two of three over Florida this weekend to conclude a five-game homestand with strong starting pitching contributing to those victories. However, they were also routed 13-0 in Sunday’s series finale. Chicago will try to bounce back by giving John Danks a little more run support. The left-hander, who has the AL’s third-lowest ERA, has yielded three runs or fewer in all eight starts but has lost three consecutive outings. In his previous matchup with Cleveland on Sept. 28, Danks recorded his only complete game, allowing three hits and one walk in a 6-1 road victory. He’s 2-5 with a 4.89 ERA in 10 career starts against the Indians and 2-2 with a 3.82 ERA at Progressive. His counterpart in Monday’s game, Justin Masterson, is all too familiar with low support, receiving the second-fewest runs per game among AL starters at 2.72.

Recent success at home is one reason why the Cincinnati Reds appear to be a contender in the NL Central. An advantageous schedule at Great American Ball Park this week should only help their cause. The Reds open a seven-game homestand Monday night looking to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates for the ninth time in 11 meetings. Cincinnati has won nine of 12 at home. That surge, keyed by a .299 batting average and 19 homers, has helped move the Reds within one-half game of Central-leading St. Louis. They’ll visit the Cardinals for a three-game series next week. Before that, Cincinnati might be in prime position to generate some significant momentum, hosting the Pirates for a four-game set before a three-game series against NL-worst Houston, a team it swept April 27-29. The Reds swept a three-game series at Pittsburgh from May 10-12, outscoring the Pirates 16-1. They’ve won eight of 10 against them at home.

A return home could benefit Joey Votto, who went 0 for 3 in the loss. The first baseman is hitting .364 with four homers and 10 RBIs in his last 11 games in Cincinnati. Votto should be happy to see the Pirates, whom he’s hitting .375 against with four homers and 22 RBIs in 35 games. Aaron Harang hopes Votto can continue that production after getting no run support in three of his last four games with three of those outings resulting in Reds losses. The right-hander didn’t get any offensive help or a decision Wednesday, allowing four runs and eight hits in six innings of a 5-4 loss at Atlanta. He won his most recent start against the Pirates on April 12, 2009, throwing a three-hitter while striking out nine in a 2-0 home win. Cincinnati might be happy to just see Harang remain healthy after its last two starters were pulled early due to injuries. Homer Bailey exited Sunday’s defeat in the third inning with tightness in his right shoulder after a blistered finger on Johnny Cueto’s right hand forced him out after six innings Saturday.

The Boston Red Sox have had their share of problems at Tropicana Field the last two years. The Tampa Bay Rays haven’t had too much trouble this season against Boston - or the rest of the powerful AL East. The surging Rays return home Monday night and look to improve to 5-0 in the season series against the Red Sox when the division rivals begin a three-game set. Tampa Bay owns the best record in baseball, aided by a 14-4 mark against AL East opponents. That includes a four-game sweep at Fenway Park from April 16-19, when the Rays outscored the Red Sox 24-9 despite batting .204 and striking out 33 times. Helping Tampa Bay in that series, 16 of its 29 hits went for extra bases. Evan Longoria went 5 for 15 and scored five runs. The Rays’ success isn’t surprising to the Red Sox, who are 4-14 at Tampa Bay in the regular season since the start of 2008.

Longoria has tormented Boston, with a .309 batting average and 10 homers and 36 RBIs in 37 career games. The slugger hit .385 with five homers and 16 RBIs to help the Rays win six of nine at home from the Red Sox in 2009. The Rays are looking for a fifth straight home win after completing a 4-1 road trip with Sunday’s 10-6 win at Houston. Ben Zobrist, continuing to rebound after hitting .241 in April, homered and had three hits to raise his average this month to .387 with 13 RBIs. John Jaso and Hank Blalock also homered Sunday as Tampa Bay amassed 15 hits to rally from an early 4-0 deficit. Boston has won five of six, including an 8-3 win over Roy Halladay in Philadelphia on Sunday. Kevin Youkilis homered and scored three runs. He’s 8 for 19 with three homers and six RBIs in his last six contests.

Stifling a potent Toronto Blue Jays lineup last month was arguably the lone bright spot in Joe Saunders’ miserable start to this season. Lately, it’s Saunders who’s provided misery to opposing hitters. The Los Angeles Angels starter will try to win his third straight outing by keeping the Blue Jays at bay again in the opener of a three-game home series. Saunders won his first four starts in 2006, his first six decisions in 2007 and 2008, and began last season 5-1. He also won his final seven decisions in 2009, but that didn’t carry over into this season for the left-hander as he dropped five of his first six starts while posting a 7.04 ERA. The only win in that span was in Toronto, where he allowed a pair of unearned runs and five hits over eight innings. The Angels used his effort in that 6-3 victory as part of a three-game sweep over the Blue Jays, who lead the majors with 76 homers and 114 doubles.

Since giving up a season-high seven runs in Boston on May 3, Saunders has been solid for Los Angeles, winners in seven of 10 at home. He’s 2-0 with a 0.81 ERA in his last three starts and followed a shutout of Oakland on May 14 by giving up one run and four hits over 7 2-3 innings Wednesday against the Chicago White Sox. Saunders will face a Blue Jays team that lost two of three in Arizona despite scoring 23 runs and hitting 10 homers this weekend. Edwin Encarnacion had five of those home runs while batting .545 over the three games. His two-run shot in the fifth inning Sunday helped Toronto salvage the series finale 12-4. Encarnacion will try to stay hot and help Brett Cecil win back-to-back starts for the first time this season and third time in his career.
