The Los Angeles Dodgers keep piling up runs at Great American Ball Park. John Ely is hoping that offensive surge continues. Ely looks to bounce back from two subpar outings when the Dodgers go for a three-game sweep of the struggling Cincinnati Reds on Thursday. After pounding Cincinnati pitching for a season high-tying 19 hits in a 12-0 victory Tuesday, Los Angeles had 11 hits in a 6-2 win Wednesday. James Loney was 2 for 5 with a pair of RBIs, Manny Ramirez homered for the second straight game and Andre Ethier went 3 for 5 with his first home run since May 12 for the Dodgers, who moved a half-game ahead of San Diego for the NL West lead. Ethier, batting a league-best .346, had not homered in his previous 14 games following a stint on the disabled list with a broken right pinky finger. Los Angeles has done just that at Great American Ball Park this season, batting .357 and averaging 9.2 runs in five games. Ely may need that kind of run support Thursday, as the rookie yielded four runs in five innings during each of his last two starts. He posted a 1.80 ERA in the six prior starts.

After not giving up a homer in the first 50 innings of his career, the right-hander has allowed three in his last two starts. He has never faced Cincinnati. He will take on a Reds club that leads the NL with 5.0 runs per game and a .278 average, but has struck out 20 times in this series. While the Reds are in a first-place tie with St. Louis in the NL Central, manager Dusty Baker could be feeling the pressure stemming from his club’s three-game skid. He was ejected for the first time this season Wednesday after Scott Rolen was thrown out for arguing a called third strike in the sixth inning. Cincinnati hopes Bronson Arroyo can get back on track as it tries to avoid getting swept at home for the first time since July 31-Aug. 2. The veteran right-hander has gone 0-1 with a 6.52 ERA in his last three starts after winning four consecutive outings. Arroyo is 1-4 with a 4.67 ERA in nine starts against the Dodgers.

A favorable interleague stretch has allowed Detroit to build some momentum. The Tigers look for their season-high sixth straight victory by completing a three-game sweep of the visiting Washington Nationals on Thursday. Brennan Boesch hit a three-run homer and Justin Verlander struck out 11 as Detroit won its sixth consecutive interleague game, 8-3 over Washington on Wednesday. After salvaging the finale of a three-game set at Dodger Stadium last month, the Tigers swept Pittsburgh last weekend and won the first two from the Nationals to improve to 6-2 against NL opponents. Detroit, which has outscored the Pirates and Nationals 29-15 during its current five-game winning stretch, tries for a sixth consecutive victory over the Nationals. Washington has lost four of five. After going 0 for 4 on Tuesday, Boesch had three hits and matched a season high with four RBIs. The rookie outfielder is 20 for 50 with five home runs and 12 RBIs in his last 13 games. Magglio Ordonez is 5 for 8 in the series, and 18 for 29 lifetime against the Nationals’ franchise. Detroit rookie outfielder Austin Jackson, however, is expected to miss a third straight game due to back spasms.

Jeremy Bonderman hopes to avoid a third straight loss in this contest. The right-hander is 0-2 with a 3.90 ERA during a four-start stretch. He allowed two runs and struck out six in seven innings of a 4-3, 10-inning win over Pittsburgh on Saturday. Though Bonderman is 7-7 with a 5.23 ERA in 22 interleague starts, he’s 4-0 with a 4.04 ERA in his last eight. That included an 8-4 win at Washington on June 20, 2007, when he allowed three runs in five innings. Bonderman’s former Detroit teammate Ivan Rodriguez went 2 for 4 with an RBI on Wednesday for the Nationals, who’ve been held to 10 runs in their last four losses. Batting .340 in 41 games, the 38-year-old Rodriguez is 3 for 8 in the series and 10 for 24 in his last six games. Adam Dunn hit his 15th home run Wednesday—his only hit in seven at-bats this series. Three of his five career hits against Detroit have left the park. Washington rookie Luis Atilano tries to avoid a third loss in a row Thursday. The right-hander allowed six runs, including three homers, in five innings of his first interleague outing, a 7-2 loss at Cleveland on Friday. The defeat dropped Atilano to 4-1 with a 3.51 ERA in six road starts.

Ubaldo Jimenez and Francisco Liriano spent time training together in the Dominican Republic while the latter was recovering from Tommy John surgery and the former was preparing for his first season as a starter. It’s unlikely either could have foreseen then how dominant both would be coming into Thursday’s series finale at Target Field between the Colorado Rockies and Minnesota Twins. In a matchup pitting two of the game’s top young pitchers, Jimenez easily comes in with the most buzz as his breakout season has made him the favorite for the NL Cy Young Award. He will take the mound looking to win his seventh straight start and help Colorado avoid a sweep. Jimenez has stopped three-game losing streaks by his team in each of his last two starts, including Friday at home against Toronto. Pitching in the rain, the right-hander gave up a season-high three runs, walking five and striking out six over six innings of a 5-3 win that was called after the Rockies pitched in the bottom of the sixth. Though it was by most standards a solid performance, Jimenez saw his ERA rise from 0.93 and didn’t display the control he’d possessed all season.

Jimenez leads the majors in wins and ERA, with a run at Bob Gibson’s record 1.12 ERA from 1968 not out of the question. His dominance has impressed Liriano. Liriano has been impressive in his own right. After struggling for two seasons following Tommy John surgery, the left-hander has regained his form. He has struck out 21 in his last two starts and 35 over his last 28 innings pitched. Liriano gave up one run and struck out 11 over eight innings of a 2-1 win over Atlanta on Friday. He has never faced the Rockies. Jimenez made his only start against the Twins in 2008, allowing three runs and eight hits over seven innings of a 4-2 home loss. He will try to help the Rockies salvage one win in this series after losing 9-3 on Tuesday and 2-1 on Wednesday. Scott Baker struck out a career-high 12 over seven scoreless innings while Danny Valencia and Nick Punto drove in the runs for the AL Central-leading Twins, who were held to two runs for the third time in five games. Thanks to Baker, the lack of offense didn’t hurt. Colorado’s only run came on a passed ball in the eighth.

One of the few bright spots for the Chicago Cubs’ underachieving lineup has been its success against left-handed pitchers. That might not bode well for Oakland’s Dallas Braden. The Cubs hope for another solid effort against a southpaw as they try to win their home series with the Athletics on Thursday. Despite its inconsistent hitting, Chicago is batting .280 against lefties compared to .253 versus right-handers. The Cubs are 11-9 against left-handed starters after winning for the seventh time in eight games against one, beating Gio Gonzalez and Oakland 6-2 on Wednesday to even the set. Derrek Lee hit his eighth home run and Alfonso Soriano added two RBIs hours after general manager Jim Hendry said it’s too early to plan whether the team will be buyers or sellers at next month’s trade deadline. Chicago, which has won seven of 19, is 6 1/2 games out of first place in the NL Central.

Lee continues to try and do that. Batting .230, the first baseman was 0 for 9 in his previous three games before getting two hits Wednesday. The Cubs hope their success against southpaws continues as they face Braden for the first time. Originally slated to start Tuesday, Braden was pushed back due to an inflamed left elbow tendon. He’s 0-4 with a 4.75 ERA in six starts since throwing a perfect game against Tampa Bay on May 9. He allowed five runs and 11 hits in 5 2-3 innings of a 7-1 loss to the Los Angeles Angels on June 9. Braden is 0-2 with a 2.95 ERA in three interleague starts. Marlon Byrd is the only Cub to face Braden, going 6 for 16 with three doubles. Oakland’s Kevin Kouzmanoff had his 15-game hitting streak snapped after going 0 for 3 on Wednesday. Oakland has dropped four of five and gone 5-10 this month after going 16-12 in May. Conor Jackson went 2 for 3 in his first start since being acquired from Arizona on Tuesday. Jackson is a lifetime .346 hitter versus the Cubs, but has never faced scheduled starter Randy Wells. Making his first appearance against Oakland, Wells looks to avoid a sixth consecutive defeat .

The Boston Red Sox moved up the start time of Thursday’s series finale against the Arizona Diamondbacks to give fans the chance to watch the Game 7 of the NBA finals between the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers. While a championship isn’t on the line at Fenway Park, the Red Sox are hoping to be celebrating a sweep of the Diamondbacks as they try to gain ground in the AL East. First pitch between Boston and Arizona was pushed up one hour in order to allow fans to watch the Celtics try to clinch their second NBA title in three years. Their game against the Lakers begins at 9 p.m. EST. The Red Sox have given Boston fans plenty to cheer about recently. They’ve won four of five and 20 of 28, including a 6-2 victory over the Diamondbacks on Wednesday. It was the fifth time in six games they’ve scored at least six runs, and they are three games behind division co-leaders New York and Tampa Bay. Dustin Pedroia continues to do his part to help Boston get back into contention, hitting a two-run homer in the first inning Wednesday. He finished with two hits for his fourth straight multihit game.

Pedroia’s average had dipped to .248 in part due to a knee injury, but his surge has come after an MRI on the knee came back negative. The second baseman is 12 for 24 with eight runs scored and six RBIs in his last six games, raising his average to .271. The Red Sox will try for their first sweep since winning three straight against Tampa Bay from May 24-26 as they hand the ball to John Lackey, who has been outstanding in his last two starts. Lackey has won his last three decisions and gave up two runs in seven innings of a 12-2 victory over the Phillies on Friday. The prolific run support came after Boston only scored two runs for him against Baltimore on June 6. The right-hander made his first start against the Diamondbacks last year, giving up one unearned run in seven innings of a 2-1 win. Lackey will try to extend the Diamondbacks’ franchise-record 12-game road losing streak. Arizona has scored two or fewer runs in eight of those defeats.

Reaching a milestone has solidified Andy Pettitte’s status in New York Yankees’ lore. Securing a World Series championship against the Philadelphia Phillies last fall also helped. Pettitte looks to continue his success against the Phillies on Thursday night, when the Yankees try to take the three-game interleague series at home. Pettitte joined Whitey Ford and Red Ruffing as the only pitchers to win 200 games as a Yankee. The left-hander, who turned 38 Tuesday, allowed three runs in 7 1-3 innings of a 4-3 win over Houston on Friday. He’ll now face Philadelphia for the first time since winning Game 6 of the World Series on Nov. 4, when the Yankees clinched their 27th title. Pettitte beat the Phillies twice in the Series despite a 5.40 ERA. He’s 4-0 with a 3.11 ERA in his last six starts against them, including the postseason. He’s entering this meeting in superb fashion, going 3-0 with a 2.10 ERA in four outings. The Yankees could use another strong effort from Pettitte after losing 6-3 on Wednesday. A.J. Burnett gave up six runs and six hits—two of them homers— in 3 1-3 innings.

Ryan Howard is trying to get going again after connecting for a solo homer Wednesday. The first baseman is 2 for 14 over the last four games after posting a .343 average with two homers and 10 RBIs in the previous nine. Howard, though, has a .196 batting average with four homers and 11 RBIs in 13 meetings with the Yankees, including the World Series. He’s also 2 for 15 against Pettitte. Philadelphia will give the ball to Kyle Kendrick, who gets his first start against the Yankees after being pushed back a day due to matchups. The right-hander also pitched in relief during Friday’s 12-2 loss at Boston, yielding two hits in two scoreless innings. He wasn’t nearly that effective in his last start June 8, surrendering six runs and six hits - two homers - in five innings while not getting a decision in a 10-8 win over Florida. Kendrick is 1-3 with a 6.41 ERA in his last five interleague games - three starts.

R.A. Dickey has been an unlikely star during the New York Mets’ resurgence. Now, the knuckleballer is in position to match a team record - and move his club into first place. Dickey looks to help the Mets climb atop the NL East as they go for a three-game sweep of the Cleveland Indians on Thursday night. Recalled from Triple-A Buffalo on May 19, Dickey can match a club record for a starter by winning his first five decisions with the Mets, a mark shared by Bobby Ojeda, Armando Reynoso and Kenny Rogers. More importantly, another win by the 35-year-old right-hander could push New York into the top spot in the division. The Mets beat Cleveland 8-4 on Wednesday for their 17th victory in 22 games, a surge that has vaulted them from last place to within one-half game of Atlanta. Dickey continued his contributions to the run Friday, yielding one run while striking out a career-high eight in seven innings of a 5-1 win at Baltimore.

His last game at Progressive Field, however, saw him give up three runs while failing to record an out in a relief appearance of an 8-1 loss with Minnesota on Aug. 5. New York is 5-0 on its nine-game road trip, which concludes with a three-game Subway Series this weekend. It is the Mets’ longest winning streak as a visitor since a six-game run from Aug. 12-17, 2008. Hot hitting has spurred the road streak, as New York has batted .314 with eight homers and 34 runs during that span. David Wright has paced the attack, going 10 for 23 with two homers and 12 RBIs over the five games. The third baseman has a .353 average with four homers and 22 RBIs in his last 22 contests. The Mets are thriving during interleague play, winning seven in a row to match the team record set from Aug. 30, 1997-June 6, 1998. The Indians are last in the AL Central, and will turn to Jake Westbrook to snap their three-game slide as he continues to put Tommy John surgery behind him. The right-hander, making his first start against the Mets, has gone 4-1 with a 3.86 ERA in his last seven outings. Westbrook went 0-2 with a 5.74 ERA in his first six games as he continued to recover from ligament replacement surgery that cost him most of 2008 and all of last year.

While solid pitching is a big reason for the Chicago White Sox’s improved play over the last week, Paul Konerko is making sure the offense shares some of the credit. On Thursday night, Konerko and the White Sox look to complete a three-game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates, who will try to avoid losing 11 straight for the first time in four years. Chicago has won six of seven and secured its third straight series win with a 7-2 victory over Pittsburgh on Wednesday. John Danks gave up two runs and four hits in eight innings to continue a string of impressive outings by White Sox starters, who have a 2.11 ERA over their last eight games. The White Sox also had another big night at the plate. Chicago, which took Tuesday’s series opener 6-4, took advantage of six Pittsburgh errors Wednesday to record at least six runs for the fourth time in its last seven games. Konerko had three hits, walked and drove in a run as he improved his average to .426 over the last 15 games. He is also batting .375 in interleague play, helping Chicago take six of eight against the NL this year.

Seeking its first three-game road sweep since winning all three in Cleveland from June 29-July 1, Chicago hands the ball to Mark Buehrle, whose start has been pushed up because of Jake Peavy’s sore shoulder. By virtue of Monday’s off day, Buehrle will still be pitching on normal rest. He continued his long-running domination of the NL over the weekend, improving to 21-6 lifetime in interleague play after pitching 6 2-3 scoreless innings in Saturday’s 2-1 win over the Chicago Cubs. The 21 wins are tied with Mike Mussina for the most in the history of interleague play. The left-hander had given up six runs in each of his previous two starts. Buehrle is 3-0 with a 1.80 ERA in four career starts against the Pirates, including two wins in Pittsburgh. The Pirates will seek to avoid losing 11 straight for the first time since a 13-game slide June 15-28, 2006. Even the debut of top prospect Pedro Alvarez wasn’t enough Wednesday, as the rookie third baseman committed an error and went 0 for 2 with a walk and a strikeout.

Josh Hamilton has been the Texas Rangers’ hottest hitter this month. Michael Young just became the club’s all-time hits leader. The two players look to continue their superb play and lead the Rangers to a three-game sweep of the sputtering Florida Marlins on Thursday night. Hamilton has batted .458 with seven homers and 21 RBIs as the AL West-leading Rangers have gone 11-4 in June. The All-Star left fielder is on a career-high 12-game hitting streak and collected four hits - one a solo homer - in a 6-3 win over Florida on Wednesday. Young also had a memorable performance in the game, delivering a two-run single in the eighth inning to pass Ivan Rodriguez for the franchise lead with his 1,748th hit. Hamilton has also been red-hot, thanks in part to interleague play. He has a 14-game hitting streak against NL opponents, posting a .418 average with four homers and 10 RBIs in that span. Hamilton is 9 for 18 with a homer and three RBIs in four career games against the Marlins. The Rangers will give Dustin Nippert his first start of the season after the right-hander made 22 appearances out of the bullpen.

Nippert is getting the ball because scheduled starter Matt Harrison was used in relief Wednesday, when discomfort in Tommy Hunter’s right hip forced him to exit with one out in the third. Nippert was 3-3 with a 4.65 ERA in 10 starts last season, and he’ll be making his first against Florida. The right-hander hasn’t faced the Marlins since a pair of relief outings in 2007, during which he allowed two hits in 4 1-3 scoreless innings. He hasn’t pitched more than three innings since going 5 2-3 in his most recent start Sept. 14, a 4-0 loss to Oakland. The Marlins, who have seven hits in this series, have dropped seven of 10. Ricky Nolasco will try to get on track in his first start against Texas after struggling through his last five outings, going 1-3 with an 8.25 ERA and allowing seven homers. The right-hander had his shortest outing of the season Saturday, lasting 2 1-3 innings while giving up five runs and nine hits - three homers - in a 6-5 loss to Tampa Bay.

Since joining the Atlanta Braves in 2005, Tim Hudson hasn’t had much luck against AL opponents. However, he has enjoyed plenty of success against the Tampa Bay Rays during his career. Hudson will try to help the NL East-leading Braves win their fourth straight series at Turner Field and their fourth game in their last five Thursday night when they conclude their three-game set versus the Rays. Since Atlanta acquired him from Oakland prior to the 2005 season, Hudson is 1-12 with a 6.78 ERA in 15 interleague starts. He is 6-1 with a 2.85 ERA in 10 starts versus the Rays, though his last outing against them in 2004, while with the Athletics. The current Rays figure to present a stiffer challenge. The 1998 expansion franchise failed to win 70 games in any of its first 10 seasons, but is now a formidable contender with an AL pennant on its resume and a share of the AL East lead along with the New York Yankees. Hudson pitched effectively at AL foe Minnesota on Friday, giving up two runs over a season high-tying eight innings, but wound up on the short end of a 2-1 score and suffered his first loss since April 21.

The lack of help from his lineup was a rarity for Hudson, whose 6.12 run support average ranks among the NL leaders. The right-hander, who has a 1.74 ERA while winning his last three starts at Turner Field, could get plenty of run support the way the Braves have been hitting. Led by Martin Prado’s major league-leading 13th three-hit game of the season Wednesday, the Braves tagged Rays pitching for 13 hits for the second straight night, evening this series with a 6-2 victory after falling 10-4 in Monday’s opener. Prado, who is 11 for 19 in his last four games, is tied for the major league lead with 95 hits and second in the NL with a .338 average. First baseman Troy Glaus is batting .329 with seven homers and 24 RBIs over his last 21 games and leads the NL with 42 RBIs since May 1, but is 0 for 7 lifetime against probable Tampa Bay starter James Shields. Facing the Braves for the first time, the Rays right-hander will try to avoid losing five consecutive starts for the first time in his career. He allowed a career high-tying 10 runs and nine hits in a season-low 3 1-3 innings of Friday’s 14-9 loss to Florida.

A visit to Kansas City has left the Houston Astros on the verge of some rare interleague success. After snapping a lengthy losing streak against AL opponents, the Astros have a chance to take the series with a second straight win over the Royals on Thursday night. Jason Michaels had three RBIs and Roy Oswalt pitched seven innings as Houston ended a six-game interleague skid with a 4-2 victory Wednesday. Interleague play as been rough on the Astros this season. They won their opener against Tampa Bay, but dropped the last two of the May 21-23 set and were swept at Yankee Stadium last weekend. Houston, however, bounced back from Tuesday’s 15-7 loss to the Royals despite recording five hits Wednesday. The Astros are 10-4 at Kauffman Stadium. After a solid effort from Oswalt, Brett Myers looks to rebound from his first defeat in a month when he faces the Royals for the first time.

The right-hander yielded three of the four runs he allowed in the first inning of a 4-3 loss to the Yankees on Friday. Myers, though, lasted seven innings in that game and has gone 2-1 with a 2.41 ERA in his last five starts. Myers is 6-6 with a 5.77 ERA in 20 interleague starts. David DeJesus has never faced Myers, but will look to continue his hot hitting against Houston. The Kansas City outfielder is 7 for 10 in the series after going 4 for 4 on Wednesday. DeJesus, 10 for 13 in his last three games, is a lifetime .436 hitter in 11 games against the Astros. Kansas City, 4-2 in its last six, called up Anthony Lerew from Triple-A Omaha to start Thursday. The move was made after the Royals placed Luke Hochevar on the disabled list with a strained right elbow Wednesday. Lerew, 5-3 with a 2.84 ERA at Omaha, went 0-1 with a 3.38 ERA in two starts for the Royals last season. The right-hander allowed three runs in two innings of a 13-3 loss at Boston in his lone interleague start May 19, 2007.

Even when Lamar Odom was a kid with limitless imagination growing up on New York’s playground courts, he thinks he might have dismissed Thursday’s season finale as a bit too extravagant. When the Los Angeles Lakers take on the Boston Celtics in Game 7 of the NBA finals, Odom realizes it’s a fantasy come true for any basketball player with the audacity to dream this big. Another memorable chapter in the NBA’s best rivalry will end with a coronation at Staples Center, where the defending champion Lakers will try to earn their 16th banner while denying Boston its unprecedented 18th title in the clubs’ second finals meeting in three years. For the fifth time in their 12 finals meetings, Boston and Los Angeles need all seven games to decide it. Each previous time it went to Game 7, the Celtics won—but when the current Lakers and Celtics take the court for the NBA finals’ first Game 7 since 2005 and just its second in the past 16 years, most will try awfully hard not to think about the history and pressure heaped on their shoulders. It’s fine for kids and historians to savor this scenario, but Kobe Bryant knows it’s not a good idea for players to get caught up in it.

Although Boston has the rivalry’s Game 7 history on its side, the Celtics have plenty stacked against them after an embarrassing 89-67 loss in Game 6 Tuesday night. Most glaringly, Boston won’t have starting center Kendrick Perkins, who sprained multiple ligaments in his right knee in the first quarter. The Celtics’ starting five has never lost a playoff series, but that five must change for Game 7. Although Perkins is a role player next to Boston’s Big Three and point guard Rajon Rondo, the Celtics must hope veteran Rasheed Wallace and youngster Glen Davis can make up for Perkins’ inside defense and rebounding. No visiting team has won an NBA championship in Game 7 since the Washington Bullets did it in 1978, yet the Celtics are a whole lot more worried about the Lakers than the Hollywood crowd.
