A sluggish third quarter ended the Orlando Magic’s winning streak. A dominant one against a fellow division leader may have started another. The Southeast-leading Magic look for their ninth win in 11 games Monday night when they host the New Orleans Hornets. Orlando appeared to be cruising to a fifth consecutive win Friday, but blew a 21-point lead to lose 92-91 to last-place Washington after being outscored 39-17 in the third quarter. Coach Stan Van Gundy didn’t hide his feelings, claiming the Magic “deserved to lose.”

Less than 48 hours later, the Magic erased an 11-point halftime deficit by outscoring Boston 36-11 in the third quarter en route to a 96-89 road victory over the top team in the Atlantic. Orlando leads the Southeast by one game on Atlanta, and is second in the Eastern Conference with the same advantage on the Celtics. Part of Orlando’s success in rebounding from Friday’s defeat was good shooting from beyond the arc. The team made 11 of 22 from 3-point range and is among the league leaders at 36.5 percent.

Back spasms forced Kobe Bryant to miss the fourth quarter of a loss at San Antonio last month. It’s uncertain if his latest injury will keep him out entirely against the Spurs this time. Bryant could miss his second straight game as the Los Angeles Lakers face the Spurs on Monday night at Staples Center. Bothered by a sore left ankle he originally suffered at Philadelphia on Jan. 29, Bryant sat out Los Angeles’ 99-82 win at Portland on Saturday. It was the first game the 12-time All-Star missed since March 7, 2007, because of a suspension.

Averaging 28.0 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.6 assists, Bryant was to be evaluated Sunday. It will likely be up to Bryant to determine if he’s healthy enough to return as the Western Conference-leading Lakers try for a fourth consecutive home victory over the Spurs.Bryant, who hasn’t missed back-to-back contests since the sitting out the first two games of the 2006-07 season with a knee injury, is averaging 28.8 points in his last nine home games against San Antonio.

The Dallas Mavericks’ only victory in their last five games came against Golden State. It’s been a little more than two weeks since the Warriors were victorious. Looking to bounce back from a loss to the last-place team in the Western Conference, the visiting Mavericks try to extend the Warriors’ season high losing streak to nine games Monday night when the teams meet for the second time in six days. Despite a career-high 46 points from Golden State’s Monta Ellis, Dallas snapped a three-game losing streak with a 110-101 home win over the Warriors on Wednesday. Two nights later, however, the Southwest Division-leading Mavericks lost 117-108 at home to Minnesota - the club tied with Golden State for the fewest wins in the West - for their fourth defeat in five games.

Dallas has allowed opponents to shoot 52.0 percent and average 109.6 points during that slump. The Mavericks will likely need a complete effort at Golden State. The Warriors, who last dropped nine in a row from Nov. 21-Dec. 6, 2008, haven’t won since beating New Jersey 111-79 on Jan. 22, but have taken five of their last six home meetings with Dallas including the last two. Stopping Ellis is something the Mavericks have been unable to do of late. After scoring 37 points in Golden State’s 111-103 win at Dallas on Nov. 24, the fifth-year pro went 17 of 23 from the field during his career night Wednesday. He’s averaging 33.5 points on 53.1 percent shooting in his last four games against the Mavericks.

Most teams may find another six-game road trip daunting. Owners of the best road record in the NHL, the San Jose Sharks are not most teams. The Western Conference-leading Sharks look for a ninth road victory in a row Monday night when they visit the last-place Toronto Maple Leafs for the first time in more than four years. San Jose has won 19 of 24 , including eight straight on the road since falling 2-1 at Phoenix on Dec. 12.

That surge has improved the Sharks to a league-best 19-6-2 on visiting ice while leading the West with 85 points, four more than Central Division-leading Chicago. They trail Washington by three points in the race for the Presidents’ Trophy, which San Jose won for the first time last season before being eliminated in the opening round of the playoffs by eighth-seeded Anaheim. Playing on the road actually might help the Sharks close the gap with the Capitals. They continued their success away from San Jose with a 4-3 win at Nashville on Saturday, after beating St. Louis 4-2 two nights prior to open this season high-tying six-game trip.

In an attempt to spark their sputtering offensive play, the New Jersey Devils acquired Ilya Kovalchuk. Martin Brodeur’s recent struggles, however, also have contributed to their rough stretch. The two superstars will try to help the Atlantic Division-leading Devils win for just the fifth time in 14 tries Monday night when they visit the Philadelphia Flyers to open a home-and-home set. New Jersey is averaging 1.75 goals in 16 games since a 4-0 win over Dallas on Jan. 5, ranking better than only Boston’s 1.71 over that period.

The Devils’ offensive struggles prompted them to acquire Kovalchuk in a blockbuster five-player trade Thursday with Atlanta that also included three draft picks. Kovalchuk, who had 31 goals and 27 assists with the Thrashers prior to the deal, made an immediate impact in his Devils’ debut Friday, getting two assists as New Jersey scored twice in the final 43.7 seconds to rally for a 4-3 win over Toronto. The sudden scoring surge failed to continue Saturday, when New Jersey fell 3-1 at the New York Rangers despite a 42-25 shot advantage. Kovalchuk had all eight of his shots stopped by Henrik Lundqvist.

The Colorado Avalanche began a four-game homestand in impressive fashion, and they hope some more strong play at Pepsi Center can help boost them back to the top of the Northwest Division. Their next opponent, however, has looked much better on the road, and the St. Louis Blues will seek a third straight victory away from home as they visit Denver on Monday night. Colorado had dropped four of five overall before Saturday’s meeting with Edmonton, but the Avalanche outshot the NHL’s worst team 42-20 in a resounding 3-0 victory.

Avs coach Joe Sacco shook up his club’s lines before the game, and the newly united trio of Wojtek Wolski and rookies Matt Duchene and Brandon Yip was on the ice for all of Colorado’s goals. Wolski broke a five-game point drought with his 17th goal, while Yip added an empty-netter for his ninth tally. Duchene’s assist was his 39th point, which ranks the 19-year-old first among NHL rookies. The victory kept the Avs two points behind division-leading Vancouver, which is in the midst of 14 consecutive road games. The Avs, meanwhile, will play their next three at home, where they are 17-8-2.

Their six-game winning streak has come to a screeching halt, but the Phoenix Coyotes won’t have to wait long for a prime chance at another victory. The upstart Coyotes return home Monday to face the NHL-worst Edmonton Oilers, who will need a victory to avoid the first double-digit string of road losses in franchise history. Phoenix’s longest winning streak of the season included impressive road wins over Detroit and Chicago and strengthened the team’s bid for its first playoff berth since 2002, but the Coyotes ran out of gas in a 4-0 loss at Dallas on Saturday night.

Playing just 24 hours after a 2-1 shootout win over the Blackhawks, Phoenix fell behind early and never recovered, missing out on a chance to sweep a four-game road trip. The Coyotes are still tied with Los Angeles for fourth place in the Western Conference, but they’re looking for improvement offensively after totaling one goal in their last three games. They needed a shootout to beat Nashville 1-0 on Tuesday. Phoenix’s power play went 0 for 6 against the Stars and has converted just once in 20 chances in the team’s last five games.

The hockey landscape is changing in southern California, a fact made especially evident by the Los Angeles Kings building the longest winning streak in franchise history. They have been showing the Anaheim Ducks their improvement firsthand. The Kings seek their 10th straight win and sixth in a row over the Ducks as the teams meet for the second time in five days Monday night in Anaheim. Since Los Angeles last reached the playoffs in 2002, the Ducks have been the region’s more successful franchise, making it to the Stanley Cup finals twice and winning their first championship in 2007.

Anaheim, though, is in danger of missing the postseason for the first time since 2004, while the Kings are tied with Phoenix for fourth place in the Western Conference. Los Angeles has solidified its position during a nine-game winning streak, which continued Saturday with a dramatic 4-3 victory over Detroit. The Kings trailed 3-0 after one period, but erased the deficit in the second and won when Michal Handzus scored with 2:21 left. The Kings’ potent attack gives them a chance to erase most deficits. They have recorded 34 goals during the winning streak, with top scorer Anze Kopitar totaling seven goals and eight assists. Handzus chipped in six points in the last two games.
