Glen Davis sat beside the practice court, recalling the last time the Boston Celtics led a playoff series 3-2. That happened just last year when an injured Kevin Garnett had his own seat at courtside. He watched helplessly in street clothes as the Celtics lost the next two games to the Orlando Magic in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Now Boston holds a 3-2 lead in that same round against the Cleveland Cavaliers. But Garnett’s right knee is healthy again and he’s playing some of his best basketball of the season. His offense has picked up and on Tuesday night he directed a defense that shut down LeBron James in a 120-88 rout in Cleveland. But one more loss Thursday night in Boston and the team with the NBA’s best record won’t even reach the conference final. Orlando already has made it by sweeping Atlanta in four games.

The league’s MVP had one of his worst playoff games in Game 5, finishing with 15 points on 3-for-14 shooting after being blanked from the field in the first half. The Celtics Big Three of Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen have been depicted at times as too old to carry the team to its second title in three years. They totaled 37 points in a 29-point loss in Game 3. But in Game 5, they combined for 64 in a 32-point victory. That’s where Garnett comes in. The 15-year veteran averaged 14.3 points during the regular season. But he’s been remarkably consistent against Cleveland, scoring 18, 18, 19, 18, and 18 points in the five games for an average of 18.2. He also leads the team with 7.2 rebounds per game. The Celtics want to feed him in the post where the 6-foot-11 Garnett can work on his 6-9 defender.

Seattle’s Felix Hernandez is looking for something to help him get back on track. Facing the Baltimore Orioles could be just what he needs. The Mariners’ ace looks to avoid a fourth straight loss while trying to help his team beat the Orioles on Thursday for their first winning series in two weeks. After winning two of his first four starts, Hernandez has gotten progressively worse in dropping his last three. He allowed eight runs in 3 1-3 innings of an 8-0 loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Friday. It was his shortest outing not involving an injury since Sept. 16, 2005. The right-hander, who’s allowed 16 runs in 14 2-3 innings over his last three outings, hasn’t dropped four straight starts since April 27-March 13, 2008. That could start against the Orioles. Hernandez is 5-3 with a 3.41 ERA in 11 starts against Baltimore, including 2-1 with a 1.25 ERA in his last five. He allowed one unearned run in a 4-1 complete-game win over Baltimore on April 21, walking none and striking out six.

Nick Markakis went 3 for 4 in that game and is 13 for 26 lifetime against Hernandez. The Orioles’ Kevin Millwood also threw a complete game in that contest, and will try to avoid a fourth straight loss to the Mariners when he takes ball Thursday. The right-hander, who’s 8-12 with a 5.05 ERA against the Mariners, will try an eighth time for his first win as an Oriole. Millwood allowed three runs in seven innings of a 6-1 loss at Minnesota on Saturday. Baltimore has scored 17 runs in his seven starts this season. The Orioles were more than lucky in snapping a three-game skid with a 5-2 win Wednesday to even the series with the Mariners. Luke Scott homered, Adam Jones had three hits and Brad Bergesen threw 7 2-3 solid innings as Baltimore snapped a four-game losing streak to Seattle to become the last team to reach double digit victories.

One day after the Detroit Tigers and New York Yankees were each shut out during a doubleheader, there’s good reason to believe both may struggle to score again. Justin Verlander and CC Sabathia square off in a matchup of elite aces as the Yankees try to salvage a split of a four-game series at Comerica Park on Thursday afternoon. Detroit became the first team to blank the Yankees in a 2-0 win Wednesday afternoon, but New York returned the favor and snapped its first three-game losing streak with an 8-0 victory in the nightcap. Neither team’s lineup will have an enviable task Thursday, with two pitchers on the mound who finished among the top four in AL Cy Young Award voting in 2009. Sabathia has gotten off to the better start. Only a rain delay kept him from his fifth victory Saturday at Boston, as he was forced from the game after play was stopped with two outs in the fifth inning of the Yankees’ 14-3 win. It wasn’t the best outing for the left-hander, who gave up a season-high two home runs.

Sabathia is 14-10 with a 4.50 ERA against Detroit - tied for his most losses versus any opponent. He has already faced Verlander twice since joining the Yankees last year. Verlander pitched seven shutout innings in a 4-2 home win April 27, 2009, then Sabathia went seven scoreless in a 2-1 victory in New York on July 18. Verlander appears primed to engage in another duel as he recovers from a rocky April. The right-hander went 1-2 with a 5.53 ERA in the season’s first month but is 2-0 with a 2.51 ERA in May. He walked four but struck out nine and held Cleveland to three runs in six innings of a 6-4 win Saturday. The Tigers hope Verlander can bring them another home win after they had a six-game run at Comerica Park snapped Wednesday night. New York is trying to avoid its second series loss of the season. The Yankees dropped two of three in Anaheim from April 23-25.

Chris Carpenter appears particularly comfortable pitching at Busch Stadium. Unfortunately for the struggling St. Louis Cardinals, Bud Norris of the Houston Astros seems to have some confidence there, too. In danger of being swept for the first time this season, the Cardinals hope Carpenter can remain undefeated at home, and help them beat Norris and the Astros on Thursday in what could turn into a pitcher’s duel. St. Louis had won 10 of 13 at home prior to this three-game series, but last-place Houston apparently wasn’t intimidated. The Astros won 6-3 Tuesday night, then came within one run of matching a season high with a 9-6 victory the following evening. It’s Houston’s first series win at Busch, which opened in 2006. Poor defense has contributed to St. Louis allowing nine unearned runs in this series. Shortstop Brendan Ryan, a mainstay in the lineup due to his defense, has made two errors in each of his last two games after committing three in his first 29 contests.

Cardinals pitchers have a major league-best 1.97 ERA at home, and Carpenter has posted a 0.90 ERA in winning each of his three starts in St. Louis. The right-hander has 47 strikeouts in 45 innings in seven starts overall. He gave up two runs and struck out eight in seven innings against Pittsburgh on Friday, but didn’t earn the win in St. Louis’ 4-3 victory. Carpenter is 6-3 with a 2.72 ERA and five complete games in 14 starts against the Astros. Norris hasn’t had nearly as much success as Carpenter, but he has been at his best versus St. Louis. Norris has limited the Cardinals to an unearned run while winning each of his three starts against them, including two on the road. That includes a matchup on April 15 at Busch Stadium, where the right-hander struck out nine in five scoreless innings of a 5-1 Astros victory. St. Louis sluggers Albert Pujols and Matt Holliday are a combined 3 for 17 against the right-hander.

An offensive outburst helped Texas regain sole possession of first place in the AL West. The way the Rangers are pitching, they may stay there for a while. Texas will have AL ERA leader C.J. Wilson on the mound in Arlington on Thursday when the Rangers decide their series with the second-place Oakland Athletics. The A’s snapped Texas’ four-game winning streak and pulled into a tie atop the division with their 7-6, 13-inning victory Tuesday, but there was far less drama in the Rangers’ 10-1 triumph Wednesday. Texas hit a season-high five home runs, including the second in as many nights for Josh Hamilton and the fourth of Justin Smoak’s three-week major league career. Michael Young, Vladimir Guerrero and Max Ramirez all added solo shots. While the Rangers have scored 42 runs in their last six games, their starting pitching has been arguably even more impressive while the team has won nine of 12 and posted a 3.12 ERA in that stretch.

Wilson has been the rotation’s surprising anchor, making a smooth transition in his first full season as a starter. He had been the Rangers’ closer for parts of the last three years, earning 50 saves over that span. The left-hander didn’t need any help from the bullpen Friday against Kansas City, pitching his first nine-inning complete game in a 4-1 win. Wilson went the distance in a rain-shortened six-inning loss to New York on April 16. This has also been a transitional year for Oakland’s Ben Sheets as the former Milwaukee ace tries to adjust to the AL and regain his form after missing all of 2009 following elbow surgery. The A’s signed him to a one-year, $10 million contract in January. Sheets, who gets the start, may draw encouragement from his last appearance, a 4-2 win over Tampa Bay on Saturday when he struck out eight while working a season-high 6 1-3 innings. The right-hander had allowed 17 runs and 19 hits including five home runs over 7 1-3 innings in his previous two outings.

The Kansas City Royals haven’t done much to help Zack Greinke earn his first win of the season. The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner tries an eighth time for that elusive victory Thursday while looking to help the Royals avoid an eighth straight loss and a series sweep at the hands of the Cleveland Indians. Greinke had six wins at this point in 2009, but this year he’d settle for one. Though he allowed four runs in seven innings of a 4-1 loss at Texas on Friday, the Royals have averaged 2.4 runs a game while going 1-6 with Greinke on the mound. The right-hander’s allowed two or fewer runs in four starts this season. Greinke is 5-7 with a 3.17 ERA in 18 starts versus the Indians, but 3-0 with a 2.52 ERA in his last six. The Indians extended the Royals’ season-high losing streak to seven with a 4-0 win Wednesday. The loss dropped Kansas City to an AL worst 4-10 at home and continued to put the heat on third-year manager Trey Hillman.

Fausto Carmona and three Cleveland relievers allowed nine hits Wednesday, but the Royals stranded 13 runners. Scott Podsednik, Mike Aviles and Alberto Callaspo each had two hits for Kansas City, which has scored 23 runs during its skid. Russell Branyan hit a two-run homer and Asdrubal Cabrera snapped an 0-for-16 skid with a two-run single for the Indians, who look to sweep Kansas City for the first time since Aug. 19-21, 2008. Branyan, who hit his first two home runs of the season in Tuesday’s 8-2 win, is 5 for 9 with five RBIs in the series. David Huff looks to avoid his fourth consecutive loss when he takes the ball for the Indians. Huff, who has a 7.16 ERA while losing his last three outings, caught a break in his last start. The left-hander allowed seven runs in 2 2-3 innings against Detroit on Friday, but the numbers were washed away when rain postponed the game after four innings. In his last official start, Huff gave up four runs and 10 hits in five innings of an 8-3 loss to Minnesota on May 2.

The San Diego Padres’ dominance over the San Francisco Giants bodes well for their chances in the NL West. With their lead in the division growing, the Padres look to sweep the Giants for the second time this season as the teams conclude a three-game set Thursday afternoon. San Diego has been a surprisingly strong contender after going 75-87 last season. A 5-2 win over San Francisco on Wednesday night gave the Padres a 2 1/2-game lead over the Giants in the NL West. Strong play within the division has helped San Diego take an early lead. The Padres are 11-6 against NL West opponents - 5-0 versus the Giants - after going 33-39 last year. San Diego has won nine of 12 against San Francisco. San Diego is off to the second-best start in team history. The 1998 Padres - who were led by Bochy - began 22-11 and went on to win the division and reach the World Series.

San Diego catcher Yorvit Torrealba, who began his career with San Francisco, is coming off a two-RBI performance but will likely be replaced by Nick Hundley due to the quick turnaround. Torrealba and Hundley have split time, handling a staff that has moved into the major league lead with a 2.69 ERA. The Padres have a 1.57 ERA against the Giants this season. Mat Latos, who is 1-1 with a 1.29 ERA in his last two starts, is set to take the mound for San Diego. He was particularly impressive Friday night, striking out a career-high nine and allowing two hits in eight innings of a 7-0 victory over Houston. The 22-year-old right-hander also had a strong performance in beating the Giants 1-0 on April 20, surrendering four hits in seven innings. It was his first appearance against San Francisco. The Giants will counter with Jonathan Sanchez, who is 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA in his last two outings.

The New York Mets haven’t won a series on the road since a visit to Miami last season. Having Johan Santana on the mound could help them get off to a strong start on their eight-game trip. Santana looks for another solid outing against Florida on Thursday when New York tries to solve Marlins ace Josh Johnson for the second time this season. The Mets open a four-game series following a 3-3 homestand that ended with a 6-4 loss to Washington on Wednesday. New York had the bases loaded and a chance to break the game open in the fifth inning, but Jeff Francoeur’s liner to right field was caught by a diving Roger Bernadina, who later hit a two-run homer off Francisco Rodriguez in the ninth. New York will try to win its first road series since taking two of three from the Marlins from Sept. 25-27. While the Mets have a major league-best 14 home wins, they have dropped two of three in each of their first four road series.

New York could open this series on a positive note with Santana taking the ball. The veteran left-hander has an 11.12 ERA in two May outings, but he is 6-1 with a 1.66 ERA in eight starts against the Marlins. Making his fifth opening day start, Santana allowed one run and four hits while striking out five over six innings to beat Florida 7-1 on April 5. Prior to walking four and giving up four runs in that defeat, Johnson was 7-0 with a 2.30 ERA in nine starts against New York. Johnson, who is 4-0 with a 2.14 ERA in five home starts versus the Mets, will try to help the Marlins avoid losing four straight at Sun Life Stadium for the first time since May 20-23. Florida, which plays 16 of its next 21 at home, ended a 3-3 trip with a 4-3 loss to Chicago on Wednesday. The Marlins had a chance for their first three-game winning streak and series sweep of the season.

8:40 pm EDT Thu May 13, 2010

Washington’s latest road trip is off to a good start. Getting the best of Colorado’s Jhoulys Chacin could make it better. The Nationals look to continue their early road success Thursday night while trying to change their fortunes against the Rockies at Coors Field. After splitting its first two trips, Washington took two of three at New York to open its current nine-game swing. Though the Nationals are 3-11 at Coors Field since the start of the 2006 season, and where they were swept last year, they’re 8-7 on the road in 2010. Washington, which split a four-game home set with the Rockies in April, has won four of five overall. The Nationals are on a high after light-hitting outfielder Roger Bernadina hit his first two major league homers, including a tiebreaking shot off Francisco Rodriguez in the ninth inning of a 6-4 win over the Mets on Wednesday.

Adam Dunn had two hits, and is batting .311 with 15 RBIs in his last 20 games. The Nationals slugger, however, was 3 for 14 against the Rockies last month.Washington will get its first look at Chacin, who has thrown 15 1-3 scoreless innings over two starts and one relief appearance since being called up from Triple-A Colorado Springs on April 27. The 22-year-old right-hander, who appeared in nine games for Colorado last season, gave up six hits and struck out seven in 7 1-3 innings of an 8-0 win at Los Angeles on Saturday. That came after he allowed one hit and fanned seven in seven innings of a 4-1 win at San Francisco in his first start May 2. Miguel Olivo went 5 for 5 and hit a game-winning homer in the Rockies’ 4-3, 10-inning victory over Philadelphia in the first game of a scheduled day-night doubleheader Wednesday. Poor weather postponed the nightcap. Carlos Gonzalez had three hits after missing the previous two games after attending the funeral of his uncle. Gonzalez is batting .330 this season, and .353 with two homers and five RBIs in nine games versus the Nationals.
