A year ago, the Chicago Cubs probably would have loved the opportunity to make another trip to Pittsburgh, but that isn’t the case this season. In Monday’s makeup of last week’s rainout, the Cubs, losers of seven of eight to the Pirates overall, look to avoid going winless on the year in Pittsburgh for the first time in franchise history. Chicago had been scheduled to complete a three-game series at PNC Park last Wednesday, but the game was postponed due to unplayable field conditions after a rain delay of more than three hours. Even though both teams play in the NL Central, the Cubs weren’t scheduled to visit Pittsburgh again this season, so a three-city trip for Chicago has now become a four-stop journey, from Pittsburgh to Houston back to Pittsburgh and then to Milwaukee on Tuesday. The Cubs, who lost to the Astros 6-3 on Sunday for their fifth defeat in six games, will probably be glad this is their last visit to Pittsburgh.

Chicago lost both games at PNC Park last week to fall to 1-7 against the Pirates in 2010 - a stark contrast from the previous two seasons, when the Cubs went 24-8 in this series overall and 12-3 in Pittsburgh. They’ve been outscored 23-8 while losing all five games in the Steel City this year. If they fail to win Monday, it will be the first time since this rivalry began in 1887 that they finish a year without a victory in Pittsburgh. Providing a glimmer of hope for the Cubs, they’ll have the suddenly dominant Carlos Silva on the mound. Silva, who hasn’t faced Pittsburgh since 2003, is the first Cubs starter to begin a season 7-0 since Ken Holtzman opened 9-0 in 1967. Acquired from Seattle after two awful seasons with the Mariners, the right-hander is coming off one of the best outings of his career, allowing two hits while striking out a career-best 11 in seven innings of a 5-0 win over St. Louis on May 29.

Victor Martinez is one of the biggest reasons the Boston Red Sox are back in contention in the AL East, with the catcher posting 10 multi-hit performances among his last 15 games. The fans of northeast Ohio likely aren’t surprised. The former Indians star hopes to stay hot Monday night as he makes his first appearance in Cleveland as a visitor, with his surging Red Sox looking to beat the Indians for a sixth straight time. Martinez spent parts of eight seasons with Cleveland, hitting above .300 three times and helping the team reach the brink of the World Series in 2007, before falling in seven games to the eventual champion Red Sox. With the Indians falling into rebuilding mode, the veteran was traded to Boston for pitcher Justin Masterson and prospects at last year’s deadline. If his recent play is any indication, Martinez has become comfortable in a Red Sox uniform. Since May 17, he’s batting a major league-best .463 with five homers, nine doubles and 12 RBIs.

His two-run homer at Baltimore on Sunday gave the Red Sox an early lead, although the team went on to lose 4-3 in 11 innings. Boston has still won seven of eight on the road and 14 of 19 overall, pulling within 4 1/2 games of division-leading Tampa Bay. Since falling behind the Indians 3-1 in the 2007 AL championship series, the Red Sox have won 15 of 18 against Cleveland. They swept the Indians in a four-game series at Fenway Park from Oct. 1-4, with Martinez hitting a grand slam as part of a 5-for-12 performance. Martinez won’t recognize a good portion of Cleveland’s current lineup, which includes several newcomers. One holdover is right-hander Fausto Carmona, who starts the series opener for the last-place Indians. Carmona has lost three straight starts, but has made positive strides this season after battling injuries and ineffectiveness the last two years. The right-hander pitched well in his last outing, scattering nine hits in a complete-game 3-0 loss at Detroit on Wednesday, but was overshadowed by Armando Galarraga’s near-perfect game.

The Philadelphia Phillies’ offense seems to be coming around, but it still has a long way to go to get back to its normal prolific clip. The Phillies try to bounce back from a tough loss and take three of four from the San Diego Padres in Monday night’s series finale at Citizens Bank Park. Philadelphia entered this set with the Padres having lost nine of 11 with its offense in shambles, plating a mere 14 runs over that stretch. The Phillies scored nine runs in winning the first two games against San Diego, but the team’s formidable lineup is still not producing as expected. In Saturday’s 6-5, 10-inning loss, Philadelphia squandered several scoring chances, leaving 15 men on base and going 3 for 15 with runners in scoring position. The Phillies also wasted a golden scoring opportunity in the 10th when Placido Polanco - the potential tying run - was thrown out at third for the second out with Ryan Howard and Jayson Werth due up.

Although Philadelphia’s seven-game winning streak over San Diego ended Sunday, the Phillies seem to have a good chance of bouncing back with Cole Hamels set to pitch in the finale. Hamels, 3-0 with a 3.49 ERA in four starts against the Padres since 2008, is taking the ball in his normal spot in the rotation despite having an abbreviated start last time out. In Tuesday’s 7-3 loss in Atlanta, Hamels gave up a three-run homer to Braves cleanup hitter Troy Glaus, but only got to face one more batter before heavy rains arrived. The left-hander threw just 24 pitches but his day was done after a 64-minute rain delay. The Phillies opted not to move up Hamels’ next start because they like the way their rotation is set. San Diego won for the ninth time in 14 games Sunday, and can avoid losing its first series since being swept in a three-game set by the Los Angeles Dodgers from May 14-15 with a victory in the finale.

The Cincinnati Reds are hoping to display their usual power-hitting prowess at home. They bailed out an ineffective Johnny Cueto on the road in his last outing. Cueto will be on the mound Monday night when the Reds start a 10-game stretch at Great American Ball Park with the first of four against the San Francisco Giants. Cincinnati leads the NL in numerous offensive categories at home, including runs, homers, batting average and slugging percentage. The Reds are 19-11 at Great American Ball Park. The Reds weren’t quite as productive on their just-completed 3-3 road trip, totaling 26 runs with a .413 slugging percentage and four homers - three by Scott Rolen. Cincinnati captured the final two games of a weekend series in Washington, winning 5-4 in 10 innings on Sunday. Drew Stubbs capped a three-hit effort with an RBI single in the 10th after closer Francisco Cordero couldn’t hold a two-run lead in the ninth. Joey Votto was the only Cincinnati batter other than Rolen to homer on the trip. The Reds feel it will be a different story at home.

Cincinnati has won seven straight starts by Cueto, who is 5-0 with a 3.27 ERA in that span. That includes a 2-0 mark with a 1.89 ERA in his last three home starts. Cueto, however, was terrible in his last outing, allowing a season-high eight runs over five-plus innings Tuesday. He did not get a decision in the 9-8 win at St. Louis, failing to record a strikeout for the first time in 72 career starts. The right-hander has never faced the Giants. San Francisco enters this contest off a Sunday victory similar to the one by Cincinnati. Giants closer Brian Wilson blew his second save by giving up a tying, two-run homer with two outs in the ninth before Freddy Sanchez capped a big series with a sacrifice fly in the 10th of a 6-5 win at Pittsburgh. Sanchez went 7 for 13 in the series, and is 18 for 36 during a 10-game hitting streak. Giants starter Barry Zito is 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA in his last three outings. He gave up one run over seven innings Tuesday in a 2-1, 11-inning loss to Colorado.

Cliff Lee has lived up to expectations in his first season with the Seattle Mariners, which began with seven brilliant innings against the visiting Texas Rangers. In Arlington, however, success has been much harder for the left-hander to find.Lee tries to shake off a history of bad outings in Texas and help the Mariners snap a three-game losing streak as Seattle begins a 10-game road trip Monday night. While the Mariners remain at the bottom of the AL West after their latest skid, their disappointing season can’t be blamed on Lee, who has been sharp since recovering from a abdominal strain. Lee faced the Rangers in his Seattle debut on April 30, allowing three hits and striking out eight without a walk in seven innings, although the Mariners lost 2-0 in 12 innings. The southpaw was nearly as impressive Wednesday against Minnesota, holding the Twins to one run and five hits in eight innings of the Mariners’ 2-1, 10-inning victory. Michael Cuddyer’s solo shot was the only homer Lee has allowed in 52 2-3 innings.

Lee would love for a similar effort Monday, especially considering the venue. His 9.19 ERA at Rangers Ballpark is by far his worst in any stadium where he’s made more than one start, and he has allowed at least six runs in each of his last three visits. While pitching for Cleveland, Lee allowed seven runs and 10 hits in five innings of a 9-1 loss April 6, 2009. Ian Kinsler had two hits to improve to 8 for 16 in his career against Lee. Kinsler is one of the few Texas batters who isn’t currently hitting well, going 2 for 18 without an RBI in his last five games. Despite a 9-5 loss to Tampa Bay on Sunday, the first-place Rangers have won four of six, averaging nearly seven runs in that stretch. Catcher Matt Treanor homered twice in Sunday’s loss. Josh Hamilton, who is 11 for 24 with two homers and six RBIs in six June games, did not start after receiving a cortisone shot in his sore right knee, but he hopes to return to the lineup Monday.

8:40 pm EDT Mon Jun 7, 2010

The Houston Astros finally have some reason for optimism after their most successful homestand of the season. A strong performance on their upcoming road trip would be even more impressive. The Astros begin a string of 10 consecutive road games Monday night with the first of four against the Colorado Rockies and their slumping offense. Houston has been the team struggling to score runs for most of the season. The Astros still rank last in the majors with a .237 batting average, but they’ve averaged 5.5 runs while winning five of six to begin June. Carlos Lee’s eighth home run of the season - and third in the last five games - sparked Sunday’s 6-3 win over the Cubs. The Astros went 3 for 7 with runners in scoring position, improving to 18 for 61 this month. Houston, which will travel to Yankee Stadium after this series, remains tied for the worst record in the NL despite having played the fewest road games in the majors. Its 8-15 record away from home has not helped. Neither have the struggles of probable starter Wandy Rodriguez. The left-hander established career bests with 14 wins and a 3.02 ERA last year, but opponents have hit .314 against him during his disappointing first two months of 2010.

Rodriguez will be trying to build on Wednesday’s promising outing against Washington. He struck out eight and allowed one run in five innings of a 5-1 win, snapping a three-start losing streak. Rodriguez will face a Colorado offense that has scored three or fewer runs four times in its last five games. The Rockies still snapped a three-game losing streak with a 3-2 win Sunday at Arizona behind red-hot ace Ubaldo Jimenez, who leads the majors with 11 wins and a 0.93 ERA. Troy Tulowitzki’s eighth home run and Carlos Gonzalez’s 35th and 36th RBIs provided just enough offense for Jimenez, but Colorado went 5 for 44 with men in scoring position during its six-game trip. Jason Hammel takes the mound for Colorado looking to continue his recent improvement. Hammel is 2-1 with a 3.86 ERA in four starts since a stint on the disabled list with a groin injury.

Atlanta Braves vs Arizona Diamondbacks Live Streaming

9:40 pm EDT Mon Jun 7, 2010

The Atlanta Braves have lost two of three, but not much else has gone wrong over the past month. The same can’t be said for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Winners in 20 of 26, the Braves will try to regain their momentum in Monday night’s opener of a four-game road series against the struggling Diamondbacks. Atlanta started 8-14 but has surged to the NL East lead with outstanding play since May 9. The Braves have posted one of the major league’s best ERA over that time and Monday’s starter, Derek Lowe, has helped. Lowe is 4-1 with a 2.45 ERA in his past five outings, has won his last three and given up one run apiece in his past two.The right-hander went a season-high eight innings in his latest victory, 2-1 against Philadelphia on Wednesday. He set another season mark with seven strikeouts, scattered six hits and walked one for the second straight start. After signing a four-year, $60 million deal with the Braves, Lowe went 15-10 with a 4.67 ERA - his worst in five years - last season but has relied more on his changeup this year.

One of those defeats last season came in Arizona as he allowed five runs and 10 hits over seven innings. He was 4-1 with a 1.91 ERA in his previous six meetings with the Diamondbacks, and the Braves could use one of those efforts after the end to their previous series in Los Angeles. After taking the opener, Atlanta suffered a pair of 5-4 losses over the next three games, including Sunday’s defeat in 11 innings. Home runs from Martin Prado and Brian McCann in the fifth inning seemed to have the Braves headed toward a sixth straight series win. The Dodgers, however, tied it in their half of the inning, and Atlanta failed to drive in a runner from third in the ninth and 10th innings. Prado, batting .404 during an 11-game hit streak, had the winning two-run single in the ninth against the Diamondbacks on May 14 at Turner Field. After getting blown out the next day, the Braves bounced back with a 13-1 rout to claim the series and their 10th win in 15 tries against Arizona. Those losses to Atlanta are part of the Diamondbacks’ current 8-20 slide, which began May 7. Arizona has posted one of lowest batting averages and worst ERAs in the majors over that time.

10:05 pm EDT Mon Jun 7, 2010

The Los Angeles Angels have won five straight games overall and five in a row at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, and that’s where starter Scott Kazmir is enjoying a 14-inning scoreless streak. The Angels hope all of those streaks will continue Monday night when they open a four-game series against the Oakland Athletics. After getting off to a slow start in which they were below .500 for the entire month of May, the Angels are starting to show why they are the three-time AL West champions. Los Angeles has matched its longest win streak of the season and has won 10 of 12 overall. The Angels are 4-2 against the Athletics this year, outscoring them 20-3 in a three-game sweep May 14-16. The first six meetings were all in Anaheim. Last year, Los Angeles went 8-1 at the Coliseum for its best mark in Oakland since going 6-0 in 1997. Kazmir is 5-2 with a 1.99 ERA in his last seven starts at the Coliseum, and his 2.66 ERA there is his second-lowest ERA at any current ballpark. He didn’t allow a run in winning two outings at Oakland last season.

The left-hander has done a good job against Athletics regulars Kurt Suzuki and Mark Ellis while Jack Cust has fared better. Kazmir has won two straight road starts after going 0-3 with a 7.59 ERA in his first four. He yielded one run over 5 2-3 innings Wednesday in a 7-2 victory at Kansas City. The Angels completed a weekend sweep in Seattle with a 9-4 victory Sunday. They outscored the Mariners 27-7 in the series, with Hideki Matsui and Mike Napoli enjoying big efforts. Matsui was 5 for 12 with two homers and five RBIs over the weekend while Napoli had six hits and scored four runs in the last two games. Matsui is 8 for 21 with seven RBIs against the A’s this year, and Bobby Abreu - hitless in his last 10 at-bats - is 10 for 24 with seven runs scored versus Oakland. The A’s played their fourth straight one-run game Sunday and avoided a three-game sweep by Minnesota with a 5-4 victory. Cust and Kevin Kouzmanoff each had three hits as the A’s strung together enough offense to prevail.

The St. Louis Cardinals’ return to the postseason was spoiled by the Los Angeles Dodgers last fall. The teams will meet Monday night for the first time since the Dodgers swept the Cardinals in a 2009 division series as they open a three-game set in Los Angeles. St. Louis won 91 games last season to capture its first NL Central crown since winning the franchise’s 10th World Series title in 2006. Los Angeles (33-24), though, made the playoff appearance a short one with a three-game sweep as Andre Ethier and Rafael Furcal each went a combined 6 for 12. The Cardinals totaled six runs in the series. Albert Pujols was held to three singles in 10 at-bats while Matt Holliday went 2 for 12 with St. Louis’ lone homer. Ethier is trying to recapture the form he showed before going on the disabled list May 18 with a fractured right pinkie. He’s 5 for 28 in seven games since returning, as his average has dropped from .392 to .353. The Dodgers have won six of eight, with each victory coming by one run. Four of those wins have come in their final at-bat, including Sunday’s 5-4, 11-inning victory over Atlanta.

The Dodgers bullpen, which had yielded six runs in Saturday’s 9-3 loss, bounced back Sunday as five relievers combined for six scoreless innings. The Cardinals completed a 4-2 homestand with a 4-3, 10-inning loss to Milwaukee on Sunday. Center fielder Colby Rasmus homered to lead off the third inning, but left the game at the end of the sixth with tightness in his left calf. No status is known for Rasmus, who is 11 for 22 over his last six games. Third baseman David Freese grounded out as a pinch hitter after twisting his ankle Saturday. He is expected to be limited to pinch-hitting duty until Friday. Both teams will start inexperienced pitchers. Rookie Carlos Monasterios will make his fourth start for Los Angeles after going 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA in the first three, though he has yet to last longer than five innings. The right-hander yielded two hits without a walk over five innings of a 1-0, 14-inning win over Arizona on Wednesday.
