It’s been three weeks since Los Angeles Dodgers starter John Ely beat the Arizona Diamondbacks for his first major league win. For the Diamondbacks, it’s been a long three weeks. Arizona will attempt to defeat Ely and avoid a ninth consecutive loss Tuesday night as it continues a three-game series at Dodger Stadium. After falling short of a win in his first two starts, Ely allowed two runs over six innings in Los Angeles’ 13-3 rout at Arizona on May 11. The rookie right-hander also won his following two starts and pitched well again Thursday at Chicago. He limited the Cubs to one run, four hits and two walks over 7 1-3 innings, but wound up on the wrong end of a 1-0 score. With a 2.18 ERA in his past five starts, Ely will try to bounce back by topping the Diamondbacks again. Unfortunately for the Diamondbacks, losing is becoming routine. Their current eight-game skid is their longest since dropping nine in a row Aug. 5-14, 2004, en route to a franchise-worst 51-111 finish.

Arizona has blown late leads in its last two losses, including suffered perhaps its most unusual loss of the current slump in Monday night’s series opener.Los Angeles scored twice to tie the game in the eighth inning after Kelly Johnson made a fielding and throwing error on an Andre Ethier grounder. In the ninth, reliever Esmerling Vasquez was called for a balk with two outs, allowing Casey Blake to score and give the Dodgers a 5-4 victory. The previous day, the Diamondbacks’ bullpen blew its 11th save in 21 opportunities when San Francisco scored twice in the ninth inning off Chad Qualls. Carlos Rosa gave up the deciding run in the 6-5 defeat an inning later. The Diamondbacks will turn to Dan Haren in their attempt to earn that much-needed victory, but the right-hander is coming off his roughest outing of the season.

After a stellar month of May, Minnesota Twins starter Nick Blackburn wants to keep it going in June. Blackburn looks to stretch his career-high win streak to six games Tuesday night when the Twins look for a season-high sixth straight win as they visit the Seattle Mariners. After going 1-1 with a 6.85 ERA in four outings in April, Blackburn has enjoyed quite a turnaround. He won all five starts in May by posting a 2.65 ERA. The right-hander has pitched at least seven innings during every game of his run. That’s how long he lasted Thursday, allowing two runs in an 8-2 home win over the New York Yankees. Blackburn’s career record in June is 3-3 with a 3.80 ERA in 10 starts. He’s 1-0 with a 2.88 ERA in four career outings versus Seattle. Minnesota has matched its longest win streak of the season after opening this four-game set with a 5-4 victory Monday. Michael Cuddyer, Jason Kubel and Delmon Young all homered to continue a team-wide trend of going deep away from home.

The Twins are third in the AL in homers on the road compared to the third-worst total in the league at home as they get acclimated to the first season at Target Field. Seattle is tied with Oakland for the fewest homers in the league overall and at home. The Mariners are hoping to put an ugly May behind them. They went 8-19 to fall eight games out of first after beginning it just one-half game out. Minnesota, meanwhile, expects Gold Glove second baseman Orlando Hudson to join the team Tuesday. Hudson did not make the trip after a collision with teammate Denard Span on the final play of Sunday’s 6-3 home win over Texas. Tests on Hudson’s surgically repaired left wrist showed no damage, and Gardenhire isn’t sure when Hudson will play again. Cuddyer made his first start at second base since 2005 on Monday. The Mariners will try to improve to 6-1 in home games started by Jason Vargas, who’s 3-1 with a 2.56 ERA in the first five such outings. The left-hander did not get a decision Wednesday after allowing two runs over five innings in a 5-4 win over Detroit.

Any momentum the San Francisco Giants’ offense gained during a four-game winning streak was quickly snuffed out by Colorado Rockies ace Ubaldo Jimenez. The Giants look to bounce back Tuesday night against a less imposing Colorado starter in Jason Hammel, but the visiting Rockies can pass San Francisco in the standings with another win as the NL West rivals continue their three-game set. After struggling to score throughout much of their mediocre May, the Giants had totaled 28 runs while winning four straight entering Monday’s series opener against Colorado. They were limited to four hits by Jimenez, who improved to 10-1 with a 0.78 ERA by pitching a complete game and beating two-time reigning NL Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum in Colorado’s 4-0 victory. Hammel will have the unenviable task of attempting to equal that performance, but he followed two of Jimenez’s previous three wins with victories of his own. The right-hander is 2-1 with a 4.74 ERA in three starts since a stint on the disabled list due to a groin injury.

Hammel posted a 3.52 ERA in four starts against the Giants as a rookie last year, although he went 0-2 in those outings. He pitched six innings in a 1-0, 10-inning loss at San Francisco on May 3, 2009, but was outlasted by Giants left-hander Barry Zito, who has long excelled against Colorado and will oppose Hammel again Tuesday. Zito’s 2.00 career ERA against the Rockies is his best against any opponent, and he has a 1.24 ERA against them in five outings since the start of last year. He beat Colorado for the third straight time - all at home - with eight strong innings in a 5-2 win April 30. Zito has a 5.40 ERA in his last four outings after going 5-0 with a 1.49 ERA in his first six starts. He allowed six runs in 6 2-3 innings of a 6-1 loss at Oakland on May 21, then struggled through 6 1-3 innings Thursday against Washington, walking five and giving up seven hits and four runs - three earned. The Giants still won that game 5-4, but Zito didn’t get the decision.
