A road series against the lowly Arizona Diamondbacks has given the Chicago Cubs some confidence after a tough homestand. The Cubs go for their second three-game sweep this season when they close their set Wednesday night against the Diamondbacks, who send the red-hot Edwin Jackson to the mound. Chicago came into Arizona after completing a 2-5 homestand in which it was outscored 35-12. However, it has put together back-to-back victories for the first time since June 16-17 to secure its first series win on the road since taking two of three against Texas from May 21-23. The Cubs beat the Diamondbacks, who have the second-worst record in the NL, 6-4 on Tuesday behind two home runs from Aramis Ramirez and one from Kosuke Fukudome. Ramirez hit a pair of two-run shots for his first multi-homer game since Aug. 23, 2008. He came in batting .178.

Ramirez isn’t the only Cub that’s turned things around in the series. Fukudome is 3 for 8 with two homers after hitting .077 in his previous 12 games. Chicago, which has scored 15 runs in the two wins, will try to complete its first three-game sweep since April 23-25 at Milwaukee. However, it will be facing Jackson, who hasn’t lost since May 28. Since suffering a defeat that day to San Francisco, Jackson is 3-0 with a 2.70 ERA in six starts and the Diamondbacks have won his last four outings. After throwing a 149-pitch no-hitter against Tampa Bay on June 25, Jackson gave up four runs and seven hits in five innings of a 12-5 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday for his third straight victory. However, the right-hander was hit hard in a 10-5 loss to the Cubs on May 2, allowing eight runs and 11 hits—two homers—over four innings. Jackson will be opposed by Ryan Dempster, who has split his last four starts despite posting a 2.97 ERA.

Kansas City has secured its first winning series in Seattle in almost eight years. It’s been much longer since the Royals swept the Mariners on their home field. The Royals look to accomplish the latter for the first time in 15 years Wednesday night at Safeco Field. Kansas City clinched its first winning series at Seattle since Aug. 30-Sept. 1, 2002, with a 3-2 win Tuesday. The Royals, who have won nine of 12 overall, are in position for their first road sweep of the Mariners since 1995. Wilson Betemit had three hits with three RBIs and Billy Butler added two hits Tuesday for the Royals, who have won four straight series and are 4-1 on a nine-game trip. Butler is 9 for 22 in his last eight games and 7 for 16 against the Mariners this season.

Royals outfielder Jose Guillen, who played for the Mariners in 2007, could miss the finale after he pulled up limping after an eighth inning groundout Tuesday. Guillen leads the team with 14 home runs and 52 RBIs. Seattle has lost five of six and struggled to get much going against Zack Greinke on Tuesday. The Mariners, who have scored 10 runs in their last five losses, could be in for another tough time against scheduled starter Kyle Davies. Though Davies has not won since May 28, he is 3-1 with a 3.82 ERA in five starts against Seattle. He allowed one hit in six scoreless innings of a 3-1 home win over the Mariners on April 26. Davies gave up two runs in six innings of his only start at Safeco Field, an 8-4 win Aug. 27. The right-hander is 0-3 with a 6.89 ERA in his last six starts, but he was effective Friday, allowing one run in 7 2-3 innings of a 2-1, 10-inning victory over the Los Angeles Angels. Seattle’s Franklin Gutierrez is 8 for 14 against Davies, but he’s 0 for 9 in this series and 2 for 17 in his last four games overall.

Emerging as one of the best pitchers in baseball, Josh Johnson will make his final start before the All-Star Game at Dodger Stadium. His next start could be just down the freeway. Johnson, a possible starter for the NL in next week’s All-Star Game in Anaheim, looks to continue his dominance Wednesday night when the Florida Marlins conclude a three-game set against the Los Angeles Dodgers. While Colorado’s Ubaldo Jimenez is the favorite to start for the NL in Tuesday’s Midsummer Classic, Johnson is also a strong candidate to get the nod. Johnson leads the majors in ERA, is seventh in the league in strikeouts and has made 15 consecutive quality starts, the best such stretch in baseball. For the most part, though, he’s been significantly better than the simple parameters required for a quality start.

The Florida ace has yielded one run or less in nine of his last 10 starts. The only start he allowed more, he gave up two runs. In Atlanta on Friday, Johnson gave up one run, six hits and no walks with eight strikeouts in six innings of a 4-3, 11-inning loss. Johnson, named NL pitcher of the month Tuesday, probably could have a few more victories if Florida scored with more consistency. The Marlins are 3-4 in Johnson’s last seven starts, supporting the two-time All-Star with four total runs in the defeats. Johnson hasn’t faced Los Angeles since April 10, his last outing before his quality start streak began. The right-hander allowed three runs and five hits while striking out seven in five innings of a 7-6 victory, but didn’t get a decision. He is 2-0 with a 5.00 ERA in three career starts at Dodger Stadium.
