Something about facing the Chicago Cubs continues to bring out the best in the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pirates try for a seventh consecutive victory over the struggling Cubs on Saturday at Wrigley Field. Garrett Jones and Andrew McCutchen homered and set career highs with five hits each as Pittsburgh improved to 4-0 against Chicago this season with a 10-6 win Friday. After going 6-27 against the Cubs from Sept. 21, 2007-Sept. 29, 2009, the Pirates have won six straight from their NL Central rivals. That included a home sweep of Chicago from May 4-6. The Cubs, who haven’t dropped in seven in a row to Pittsburgh since 1990, have lost eight of 10 overall. Chicago is a disappointing 8-9 at home in 2010. Pittsburgh had a season-high 16 hits Friday to snap a four-game losing streak in which it managed five runs and 18 hits and was shut out in its previous two contests.

Jones, whose three-run homer off reliever Carlos Zambrano in the eighth inning Friday broke a 6-6 tie, drove in a career-high five runs. McCutchen scored five runs and had two RBIs. The two rising stars are the first Pirates to have five hits in the same game since Willie Stargell and Bob Robertson on Aug. 1, 1970 at Atlanta. McCutchen is 9 for 11 with four RBIs in three games against the Cubs this season. Jones, a native of south suburban Chicago, is 10 for 17 with 10 RBIs versus them in 2010. After Pittsburgh tagged former Pirate Tom Gorzelanny for five runs in five innings in the series opener, it will try to beat scheduled starter Ryan Dempster for the second time this month. On May 4, Dempster allowed three runs in seven innings of a 3-2 loss at Pittsburgh. He dropped to 6-5 with a 5.26 ERA in 18 career starts versus the Pirates.

The New York Yankees continue to use comebacks to frustrate the Minnesota Twins. After using an historic grand slam by Alex Rodriguez to win the opener of a three-game set, the Yankees look to make it 12 straight victories over the Twins on Saturday. New York won 8-4 on Friday, improving to 28-5 at home against Minnesota since 2002, including playoffs. The Yankees’ 11-game overall win streak includes last year’s sweep in a division series, and New York has also won 11 in a row at home versus the Twins. Minnesota’s brief history at the new Yankee Stadium has been especially frustrating. The Twins have blown leads in the seventh inning or later in five of their seven losses in the Bronx since the start of last season.

That was the case again Friday. The Twins rallied for a 4-3 lead in the seventh on RBIs by Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau. In the bottom of the frame, Minnesota opted for the unusual move of intentionally walking Mark Teixeira to load the bases in front of Rodriguez, who hit his fourth homer of the year to pass Frank Robinson for seventh place on the all-time list with 587. The grand slam was Rodriguez’s 19th, trailing only Manny Ramirez’s 21 and Lou Gehrig’s record 23. The Yankees are a major league-best 11-2 at home. It may not be easy for the Twins to bounce back Saturday when they face Andy Pettitte, who is 7-1 with a 2.95 ERA in his last 11 regular-season starts against them with four straight wins. Morneau and Mauer, however, are both 4 for 10 against him.

The Toronto Blue Jays’ lineup continues to roll, and a matchup with Scott Feldman may only help their cause. Coming off their most productive game of the season, the Blue Jays look to became the latest team to take advantage of Feldman’s struggles as they face the Texas Rangers on Saturday. Toronto opened this three-game set against AL West-leading Texas with a 16-10 win Friday night, hitting a season-high five home runs to boost its major league-leading total to 57. The Blue Jays had 15 hits, including three-run home runs from Aaron Hill, Travis Snider and Vernon Wells. Hill returned to the lineup after missing a game due to a sore right hamstring, an injury that kept him out of 15 games earlier this year. Toronto’s lineup has been potent even though Hill has had a poor start, hitting .184 with three homers after connecting a career-best 36 times last season. He has a chance to build some momentum against Feldman.

The right-hander has posted a 10.61 ERA in losing each of his two road starts, and is 0-3 with a 7.83 ERA in his last five outings overall. He yielded four runs and six hits in four innings before Texas took the lead for good in a 6-4 win over Kansas City on Sunday. This is Feldman’s his first road start versus the Blue Jays. He is 0-2 with a 4.81 ERA in four outings against them. Toronto will give the ball to Ricky Romero, who has been struggling after a strong first month, allowing nine runs over his last two outings. The left-hander yielded four runs and eight hits in 5 1-3 innings of a 9-7 win over Chicago on Sunday. Romero, though, struck out seven, giving him 47 in 47 1-3 innings. Romero has not gotten any run support in two career starts against the Rangers, going 0-1 with a 1.35 ERA. He’s facing a Texas lineup that is coming off a strong performance, scoring 10 runs for the second time in three games.

Until recently, the Tampa Bay Rays haven’t had trouble scoring runs on a consistent basis. The Rays look to give James Shields much more support than they did in his last start while trying to even their home series with the Seattle Mariners on Saturday. Tampa Bay’s 192 runs are among the most in the majors, but the AL East-leading Rays have averaged 3.3 runs while losing four of six. After scoring 21 runs during a three-game sweep at Seattle last week, the Rays managed just six hits in a 4-3 loss Friday. Carlos Pena, B.J. Upton and Pat Burrell went a combined 0 for 12 in the series opener. The Rays didn’t give Shields any support when they fell victim to a perfect game for the second straight season, this time in a 4-0 loss to Dallas Braden and Oakland on Sunday. Shields allowed four runs - two earned - and 11 hits while striking out six in six innings of that contest.

Shields’ teammates helped him out in a 5-2 win at Seattle on May 4. The right-hander gave up two runs and struck out a season-high 10 in eight innings to improve to 3-2 with a 2.32 ERA in seven starts versus the Mariners. Franklin Gutierrez, who’s 6 for 13 with a homer against Shields, hit one of three home runs Friday for the Mariners. Seattle snapped a four-game losing streak to Tampa Bay by scoring one fewer run than it totaled in three contests against the Rays last week. Adam Moore and Mike Sweeney also homered for the Mariners, who entered Friday’s contest with a major-league low 16 homers, but have hit six in two games. Vargas fell to Shields and the Rays last week despite giving up three runs and striking out eight in 6 2-3 innings in his first start versus Tampa Bay. The left-hander gave up one run and four hits in 7 1-3 innings of an 8-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday to match his win total from 2009.

4:10 pm EDT Sat May 15, 2010

After a tough start to their road trip, the Philadelphia Phillies are ending it with a series at what has become a hospitable venue. The surging Phillies look to extend the Milwaukee Brewers’ home losing streak to seven as they play the middle game of their weekend series Saturday. Philadelphia entered this set following a three-day stretch in Colorado that included postponements due to inclement weather and allegations of sign stealing when its bullpen coach was caught by TV cameras using binoculars. The Phillies split two games in Denver, then beat the Brewers 9-5 at Miller Park on Friday night. The Brewers, who are a major league-worst 4-12 at home, have lost six straight there for the first time since August 2004. Their last seven-game home skid in a single season was from June 20-July 13, 2002.

Philadelphia, meanwhile, has won nine of 12 overall, increasing its NL East lead to 1 1/2 games over surprising Washington. The Phillies scored nine runs for the second time in three games, getting a two-run homer from Ryan Howard. A two-time All-Star, Howard is hitting .391 with nine RBIs in his last five games at Milwaukee. Philadelphia’s lineup could get a boost with Carlos Ruiz—a .345 hitter— close to returning. Ruiz, who injured his right knee in a 4-3 loss to Colorado on Wednesday, is day to day. If Ruiz starts, he’ll catch Joe Blanton’s third outing of the year. Blanton started the season on the disabled list due to a strained oblique. The right-hander surrendered three runs in six innings of a 4-1 loss to Atlanta last Saturday. Blanton is 1-1 with a 5.30 ERA in three starts versus the Brewers. If Philadelphia can make it to the late innings with a lead, it may have closer Brad Lidge available. Medical tests on Lidge’s surgically repaired right elbow showed no structural damage. He’s expected to throw prior to Saturday’s game, and will likely be available to pitch if he has no discomfort.

4:10 pm EDT Sat May 15, 2010

Tim Lincecum outpitched Houston’s Roy Oswalt to open the 2010 season. San Francisco hopes its ace can do it again. The two-time reigning NL Cy Young Award winner looks to continue both his individual dominance over Houston and that of his team when the Giants and visiting Astros continue their weekend series Saturday. Lincecum allowed four hits and struck out seven in seven scoreless innings of a 5-2 opening-day win at Houston, improving to 3-0 with a 1.37 ERA in six career starts versus the Astros. The right-hander has not given up a run in his last 15 1-3 innings against Houston. Lincecum’s 2.95 ERA and 32 strikeouts over his last three starts are solid, but he has not earned a decision in any of them. He allowed two runs and a season-high seven hits in six innings of a 6-5 win at New York on Sunday. He’ll look to help San Francisco to a second straight victory after it snapped a three-game skid Friday with an 8-2 win over Houston. It improved the Giants to 4-0 against the Astros this season, and was their sixth consecutive victory in the series since last August.

Andres Torres had three hits with two RBIs and Pablo Sandoval added two hits with an RBI as the Giants broke out after being held to four runs while getting swept by NL West-leading San Diego earlier this week. On Saturday, the Giants will again try to get the best of Oswalt, who allowed three runs in six innings of the Astros’ opening day loss. The veteran right-hander is 5-6 with a 3.76 ERA in 14 starts against San Francisco. Oswalt takes the mound one day after saying he would waive the full no-trade clause in his contract if Houston wants to try to shop him this season. Coming off a three-game sweep at NL Central-leading St. Louis, the Astros had their four-game winning streak snapped Friday. Hunter Pence homered and had three of the seven hits for Houston, which was otherwise stymied by San Francisco starter Todd Wellemeyer, who allowed two runs in 7 1-3 innings.

Corey Patterson’s return to the major leagues has provided a spark for the Baltimore Orioles. The veteran outfielder looks to further help the Orioles as they try for a season-high fourth straight victory Saturday night against the visiting Cleveland Indians. After playing with four different teams over the last three seasons, Baltimore signed the 30-year-old Patterson to a minor league contract last month after Seattle released him following spring training. Though he wasn’t in the Orioles’ plans a month ago, he’s been a key to their recent success. In his second stint with Baltimore, Patterson is 6 for 13 with four runs scored in three games - all wins - since being called up from Triple-A Norfolk on Wednesday. He had three hits in the Orioles’ 8-1 win over Cleveland on Friday, and made a leaping catch at the wall to deny Shin-Soo Choo a home run. Patterson also threw out the potential tying run for the final out of a 6-5 triumph over Seattle on Thursday.

While Patterson’s presence continues to boost the Orioles, Luke Scott also has been a major contributor during their three-game winning streak. Scott, who had three hits Friday, is 7 for 13 with seven RBIs in his last three games. He’s 10 for 18 with five RBIs in his last four against Cleveland. After Jeremy Guthrie allowed two hits over eight innings Friday, the Orioles hope Brian Matusz can avoid a fourth straight loss when he takes the ball in this contest. The left-hander allowed a season-high six runs and nine hits in 3 2-3 innings of a 6-0 loss at Minnesota on Sunday. In his only career appearance against Cleveland on Aug. 30, Matusz allowed a run and four hits while striking out eight in seven innings of the Orioles’ 5-2 win. Looking to avoid a third straight loss, the Indians counter with Mitch Talbot.

7:05 pm EDT Sat May 15, 2010

After his customary slow start, Jon Lester has shown there was no need to panic. The Boston Red Sox are attempting to prove the same about their entire team. Lester will try to help the Red Sox move three games above .500 for the first time this season Saturday night, when they continue their weekend series with the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park. Lester was 0-2 with an 8.44 ERA through his first three starts, but has pitched splendidly since. He won his third straight start Sunday, limiting the powerful New York Yankees to two runs and four hits in seven innings of Boston’s 9-3 victory. The left-hander has a 0.98 ERA, a .154 opponent batting average, and is averaging more than a strikeout per inning over his last four outings.

The Red Sox are hoping they’re also collectively over the hump. Boston has won eight of 11 after a 12-14 start, including a 7-2 victory Friday. David Ortiz homered twice for the second time this month, and had a season-high four RBIs. After a putrid April in which he hit .143 with one homer and four RBIs in 16 games, Ortiz is batting .333 with five home runs and 11 RBIs in nine May games. As hot as Ortiz is, he may be relegated to pinch-hitting duty Saturday against Tigers left-hander Dontrelle Willis, as he and right-handed Mike Lowell have been platooning at designated hitter in recent weeks. Lowell, who with Willis was on the Florida Marlins club that won the 2003 World Series, is 1 for 3 with a walk against his former teammate. Willis would surely like to forget the last time he faced Boston. He didn’t give up a hit against the Red Sox on June 4, but got pulled after 2 1-3 innings as he couldn’t find the plate, walking five batters and hitting another. He got charged with five runs and the loss in a 6-3 defeat.

With Jorge Cantu back in the lineup, the Florida Marlins hope to build on a much-needed offensive outburst at the plate. The Marlins are expected to have their cleanup hitter back as they try to win three in a row for the first time this season Saturday night against the struggling New York Mets. Though Cantu was rested for the first time this year, Florida hit a season-high four home runs in a 7-2 win over New York on Friday, a day after winning 2-1 in the opener of this four-game series. The Marlins scored more than four runs for the first time since May 2, when they beat Washington 9-3. Cantu, who has seven home runs and a team-high 29 RBIs, was replaced in the cleanup spot by Dan Uggla, who hit two home runs and drove in four after being rested in the series opener.

Florida can only hope Cantu has a similar performance in his return to the lineup. The third baseman is 5 for 41 with four RBIs in his last 11 games. Many of New York’s hitters are in extended slumps, as well, and manager Jerry Manuel may finally make changes after threatening to shake up the lineup before Friday’s game. He stuck with his usual order, and New York was limited to four hits for the second straight contest. David Wright has struck out 20 times in his last 41 at-bats and is 5 for 24 over his last seven games. Jose Reyes went hitless in four at-bats to drop his average to .215, and Jeff Francoeur is batting .132 over his past 26 contests. Among the options Manuel has is putting Reyes back in the leadoff spot, moving Wright from fifth to third in the order, and benching Francoeur for scrappy rookie Chris Carter.

In April, Jake Peavy looked lost on the mound for the Chicago White Sox. He seems to have righted himself in May. Peavy will try to win his third straight start and help the White Sox bounce back Saturday night when they continue a weekend series with the Kansas City Royals, who look to give new manager Ned Yost his second consecutive victory. Peavy, making his first career start in Kansas City, has overcome a shaky opening month by flashing the form that earned him the NL Cy Young Award in 2007 with San Diego. The right-hander was 0-2 with a 7.85 ERA in five April starts, allowing 25 runs, 32 hits and 20 walks in 28 2-3 innings. On May 3, though, he limited Kansas City to four hits, walked one and struck out nine in seven innings of a 5-1 win. Last Saturday, Peavy surrendered two runs, three hits and fanned eight through eight innings of a 7-3 victory over Toronto.

Kansas City didn’t miss much in the seventh inning Friday, totaling five runs and six hits off four pitchers to secure a 6-1 win. The victory was the first in the AL for Yost, the former Milwaukee skipper who replaced the fired Trey Hillman on Thursday after two-plus lackluster seasons. A.J. Pierzynski drove in Omar Vizquel for Chicago’s only run. Vizquel, a 22-year veteran and winner of 11 Gold Gloves as a shortstop, was the designated hitter for the first time in his career, and finished 1 for 4 to raise his average to .143. The White Sox, losers of 10 of 16, failed to win their first consecutive games since sweeping Seattle from April 23-25. Looking for its season-high third straight win, Kansas City turns to Luke Hochevar, who will start against Chicago for the second time this month. On May 4, the right-hander had perhaps his finest outing of the year when he held the White Sox to a run and three hits over six innings of a 7-2 win in Chicago.

7:10 pm EDT Sat May 15, 2010

The St. Louis Cardinals didn’t need any home runs to give Adam Wainwright plenty of support in his last outing. After ending a long homerless drought, the Cardinals may not need much production at the plate to get a second straight win as they send their ace to the mound against the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday night. St. Louis was struggling entering the opener of this three-game series, managing to stay ahead of surging Cincinnati in the NL Central despite losing seven of nine. The Cardinals failed to hit a home run in any of those contests. Albert Pujols ended that drought with a two-run shot in the third inning, and the Cardinals increased their lead in the division to 1 1/2 games with a 4-3 win over the Reds on Friday night that also ended Cincinnati’s five-game winning streak. The Reds’ streak included two straight shutouts.

St. Louis’ 87 homers at Great American are the second most by a visiting team, one fewer than the Cubs. Pujols hit his first homer since April 25, though the three-time NL MVP has seven RBIs over his last three games. Pujols, though, did not drive in a run and the Cardinals had 11 hits in one of their most productive games this season, an 11-4 win over Pittsburgh on Sunday. Wainwright surrendered two runs and struck out seven in six innings to earn a win in that contest. The right-hander yielded three runs or fewer for the 25th time in his last 26 starts. Wainwright hasn’t been nearly as good in five starts versus the Reds, going 2-2 with a 4.85 ERA. Cincinnati will counter with Mike Leake, who is 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA in his last three starts. The 22-year-old rookie right-hander earned a win against Chicago on Sunday, giving up three runs and striking out six in seven innings of a 5-3 Cincinnati victory.

7:10 pm EDT Sat May 15, 2010

After finding some much-needed offense at the end of a road trip, the Atlanta Braves’ hitters seemed to gain even more confidence upon their return home. With Tommy Hanson on the mound Saturday night, the Braves may not need to light up the scoreboard to win. Hanson looks for his third straight victory and tries to help Atlanta extend its five-game win streak as it continues its series against the foundering Arizona Diamondbacks, losers of seven in a row. After scoring 16 runs in their season opener against Chicago, the Braves averaged 3.5 over their next 30 games. They totaled 19 runs while dropping four of the first six on a nine-game road trip. Their fortunes changed earlier this week in Milwaukee, where they totaled 28 runs and batted .307 during a three-game sweep of the Brewers. Atlanta returned home and rallied for a 6-5 win Friday night in the opener of this series, scoring all of its runs in the final three innings. Martin Prado hit a two-run single in the ninth after homers from Brian McCann and Nate McLouth helped the Braves recover from an early 4-0 deficit. Atlanta had at least 12 hits for the third straight game.

Coming off perhaps his best performance of the season, Hanson will try to help his team reach the .500 mark for the first time since it was 8-8 on April 23. He allowed four hits and struck out eight over eight shutout innings of an 8-2 victory in Milwaukee on Monday. Hanson posted a 2.14 ERA in his first four outings of 2010, but had a 1-2 record to show for it after getting six total runs of support - all in a win in San Diego on April 14. Hanson defeated the Diamondbacks last Aug. 17 at home, giving up two runs over six innings of a 9-4 victory. While the Atlanta offense seems to be finding its form, the same cannot be said for Arizona. The Diamondbacks have batted .204 and been outscored 58-20 during their seven straight losses. Arizona’s bullpen has a 12.94 ERA over the last six contests and recorded its ninth blown save in 16 chances Friday.

Kevin Correia’s teammates have provided him the highest average run support in the majors this season. The San Diego Padres right-hander, though, might need a different kind of support in his next start. Scheduled to make his first appearance since his brother’s sudden death, Correia will try to earn his fifth win in six tries Saturday night against the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers, winners of five in a row.Correia’s 21-year-old brother, Trevor Brent Correia, died after falling from a 60-foot cliff while hiking off the Santa Barbara, Calif., coastline Saturday, one day before the right-hander was scheduled to make his next start. The pitcher has been on the league’s bereavement list since Tuesday. Correia has won more than four games once in his career, going 12-11 in 2009. That was after going 1-4 with a 5.37 ERA in his first 10 starts in his first season with the Padres.

He’s off to a better start this year thanks to the 9.26 runs per outing his teammates have provided him. The NL West-leading Padres, though, couldn’t help Correia outduel major league ERA leader Ubaldo Jimenez in his previous outing. Correia retired 11 straight during one stretch May 3 against the Colorado Rockies, but they managed three runs and four hits in six-plus innings against him in defeating the Padres 5-2. The Padres lost the opener of this three-game set Friday with the Dodgers, a 4-3 defeat that came down to a couple of inches. With San Diego leading 3-2 in the seventh, Matt Kemp hit a two-run homer just out of the grasp of center fielder Tony Gwynn Jr. and denied the Padres a fourth straight victory.

The Oakland Athletics are having major problems at the plate, and facing Ervin Santana probably won’t help them. Justin Duchscherer, meanwhile, has excelled against the Los Angeles Angels. Two pitchers with plenty of success against their opponents square off Saturday night when Santana and the Angels take on Duchscherer and the Athletics. Oakland has scored a total of two runs in losing three straight after managing four hits Friday in a 4-0 loss as Angels starter Joe Saunders went the distance. The Athletics are 2 for 20 with runners in scoring position during their skid. It could be difficult to get untracked against Santana, who has beaten Oakland more than any opponent. Santana is 10-2 with a 1.45 ERA in 15 career starts against the Athletics.

Although the right-hander has limited Kurt Suzuki to two hits in 23 at-bats, several other Athletics have fared well against Santana. Eric Chavez is 8 for 25 versus Santana, and is expected to start after not being in the lineup the last three games with opponents starting left-handers. Outfielder Ryan Sweeney is 7 for 12 lifetime against Santana and could be back in the lineup after missing two games with an illness. Santana is winless in his last four outings, allowing five runs over 6 2-3 innings Sunday in an 8-1 loss at Seattle. Runs may also come at a premium for the Angels against Justin Duchscherer, who is 2-0 with a 1.37 ERA in three career starts against them in addition to going 4-0 with a 1.48 ERA in 21 relief appearances. Duchscherer will be activated off the disabled list in his first start since he lasted 3 1-3 innings at Toronto on April 29 before leaving with a left hip strain.
