The Maple Leafs are 7-1-2 versus New Jersey since the beginning of the 2008-09 season. They’ve allowed two goals while winning the last three meetings at Air Canada Centre. Jonas Gustavsson started in Toronto’s net for the two matchups this season but was sent to the minors last week. Fellow rookie James Reimer, who has never faced the Devils, has been splitting time with Jean-Sebastien Giguere, who has won his last four starts versus New Jersey. All-Star forward Phil Kessel, who has not scored in the last 12 games, has three goals and two assists in his last five games against the Devils. The Leafs could see right winger Joffrey Lupul make his debut after he was acquired Wednesday in a deal that sent defenseman Francois Beauchemin back to Anaheim. Lupul has 13 points in 26 games this season after sitting out nearly a year with a back injury and subsequent blood infection.

Toronto will try to post its first four-game home winning streak since a five-game run March 9-20. Toronto will try for a season-high fourth consecutive home win and a fourth straight over the Devils on Thursday night. After averaging 1.7 goals during a 1-5-1 slide going into the All-Star break, the Maple Leafs have scored 3.6 per game during a 4-1-0 stretch to climb within eight points of eighth-place Carolina in the Eastern Conference. New Jersey’s chances of reaching the playoffs aren’t as good, standing 15 points out of the East’s No. 8 spot, but the fact that it’s even a possibility at this point is fairly surprising. The Devils shared the NHL’s worst record when rookie coach John McLean was fired Dec. 23 and replaced by Jacques Lemaire, but they’re 10-1-2 since Jan. 8.

The Kings went into their current 10-game road swing on a three-game winning streak and haven’t slowed down much. They followed a 1-0 shootout loss at Minnesota on Feb. 1 with a 3-1 win in Edmonton a night later, then got past red-hot Calgary 4-3 in a shootout on Saturday. Los Angeles remains barely on the outside of the Western Conference playoff picture, but it’s starting to build some momentum with 29 games left. Jonathan Quick will be between the pipes Thursday seeking a sixth straight win. He has a 1.74 goals-against average in his last five starts and has three road shutouts since Dec. 13.

Pittsburgh Penguins won four of the first five games they were without Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, a testament to the team’s steady defense and solid depth up front. Suddenly, the absences of Crosby and Malkin are far from their only concerns. An injury to Chris Kunitz and a suspension for Matt Cooke could leave the Penguins without five of their top seven forwards Thursday night as they host the resurgent Los Angeles Kings. Pittsburgh lost its first three games without Crosby and its first contest after Malkin initially went down with a knee injury, but the team didn’t lapse into a prolonged funk. Quick outplayed Marc-Andre Fleury as Los Angeles beat the Penguins 5-2 at Staples Center on Nov. 5, 2009, the first time Kings defenseman Rob Scuderi faced the team he helped win the Stanley Cup five months earlier. This will be Scuderi’s first trip to Pittsburgh as a visitor.

The Flyers have won six of seven at home, holding opponents to two goals or fewer in those victories—including a 3-1 win over Dallas on Saturday. Jeff Carter, who scored against the Stars, has been on a tear of late with nine goals and five assists over the last 11 games. His 25 goals this season are one behind Danny Briere for the team lead, and Carter is two points shy of Claude Giroux’s team-high 50. Carter has feasted on the Hurricanes, recording a hat trick on Nov. 11 to give him nine goals and nine assists in the past 11 meetings. He has six goals and 10 assists in 11 home matchups.

Facing Carolina may just keep Philadelphia rolling. The Flyers haven’t lost in regulation to Hurricanes since Dec. 19, 2006, going 14-0-3 with eight straight wins. They’ll conclude the season series Feb. 18 in Raleigh, where Philadelphia set a season high for goals with an 8-1 rout on Nov. 11. Still, Flyers coach Peter Laviolette is wary of getting overconfident despite his team winning four in a row at home over the Hurricanes. Cam Ward finished with 31 saves, but it’s not immediately known who will start in goal Thursday. Ward is 1-7-1 with a 3.24 goals-against average in his last nine games versus the Flyers. The only win came in Philadelphia on Nov. 28, 2008. Justin Peters, who hasn’t started since Jan. 9, dropped his only career start at the Wells Fargo Center on Nov. 1 after making 34 saves in a 3-2 defeat.

The Sabres had won six of seven road games versus Florida before losing 6-2 on Dec. 17 in their only visit this season. That matchup saw Ryan Miller get pulled for the first time in 33 games - he gave up four goals in the first period - and he was in net for a 4-3 home loss to the Panthers six days later. Miller had been 8-2-0 with a 1.99 goals-against average in his previous 10 starts versus Florida. The latest meeting began the Panthers’ current 21-game stretch that includes 18 decided by one goal. They fell to 7-5-6 in those contests after losing 2-1 to St. Louis on Tuesday.

Florida hasn’t been giving its goaltender much support. Tomas Vokoun has allowed no more than three goals in eight straight starts but has lost five of them, including defeats in all three in which he’s surrendered two or less. Florida, three points behind Buffalo, has had six straight decided by a single goal, going 2-3-1. The Sabres have won four of five, including matching their season high for goals in a 7-4 win over Tampa Bay on Tuesday. Drew Stafford recorded his third hat trick of the season, and the Sabres scored five goals in the third period to erase a 3-2 deficit.

New York is scheduled to start Mikko Koskinen for the second consecutive game after the 22-year-old stopped 21 of 26 shots in Tuesday’s 5-3 loss to Toronto in his NHL debut. Joel Martin, who has yet to appear in an NHL game, will be Koskinen’s backup. The Canadiens are 14-2-2 the last 18 meetings with the Islanders at Bell Centre, winning the last three there. They’re also 12-1-3 over the past 16 overall matchups, but fell 4-1 at New York on Dec. 26. Koskinen was pressed into duty after fellow rookie Kevin Poulin suffered a dislocated left knee cap during pregame warmups Tuesday.

Despite allowing a career high in goals, Price is tied for the NHL lead with a personal-best 26 wins. His 2.43 goals-against average is the lowest of his four-season career. Montreal has followed a three-game winning streak with consecutive losses, but the latest effort was one of its worst this season. The Canadiens gave up a season high in goals Wednesday, falling 8-6 at Boston in a game marred by seven game misconducts and 182 penalty minutes, including seven to Price for fighting Bruins’ goalie Tim Thomas. It’s unclear if he’ll be back in net or if backup Alex Auld will get the nod. Auld is 3-0-0 with a 2.38 GAA in his last four starts, and made 30 saves in a 3-1 road win over New York on Oct. 29.

The Lakers also must worry about Ray Allen, who needs to make two 3-pointers to break Reggie Miller’s NBA career record of 2,560. Allen is grateful he has a chance to reach that milestone in front of the home crowd. Allen, who scored 25 points at Charlotte, has totaled 45 in his last two regular-season games against the Lakers - both in Los Angeles. However, he’s averaged 8.3 on 11-of-44 shooting the last four home games versus Los Angeles, including playoffs. Though the Lakers went 1-2 at TD Garden in the finals, they have won four of five regular-season meetings in Boston, including the last two by one point each.

The Celtics are 23-4 at home but have dropped two of three overall and been plagued by injuries of late. Boston dressed only 10 players while shooting 40.8 percent in Monday’s 94-89 loss at Charlotte. The Lakers hope to avenge that defeat with a third straight regular-season road victory over the banged-up Celtics on Thursday night.
Behind 32 points from Paul Pierce, Boston shot a road season-high 60.3 percent in a 109-96 win over the Lakers on Jan. 30. It was the Celtics’ first trip to Staples Center since their 83-79 loss there in Game 7 of the NBA finals June 17.

The Warriors, who went 2 of 18 from 3-point range, can’t afford their intensity level to waver against a Phoenix club giving up 90.6 points per game over the last five contests. Ellis has averaged 30.5 points his last four games against the Suns, all in Oakland. However, he’s totaled 34 while injuries have limited him to two appearances during the teams’ last four meetings at US Airways Center. Despite Ellis’ and the Warriors’ struggles at Phoenix, Monday’s loss to the Suns is their only defeat in five games. Ellis scored 22 of his 37 points in the first half while Dorell Wright added 23 with 11 rebounds and eight assists as the Warriors shot 51.1 percent in Wednesday’s 116-114 win over Denver.

Phoenix has averaged 115.8 points and shot 48.5 percent during a 10-game home winning streak over Golden State that followed a 110-100 loss on March 18, 2005. Nash has averaged 19.3 points and 13.0 assists in his last six games against the Warriors. While Golden State prefers to push the tempo like the Suns, it has not had much success in two losses to Phoenix this season. Phoenix’s 104-92 win at Golden State on Monday was its fourth in five games. The 10th-place Suns, currently 2 1/2 games out of the final Western Conference playoff spot, have not been at .500 since they were 13-13 on Dec. 19.

Denver has dropped five of seven overall, and although the Nuggets’ 121 home wins since the start of the 2007-08 season are the most in the league, they’re on the verge of losing a third consecutive contest at the Pepsi Center for the first time since Dec. 31, 2006-Jan. 6, 2007. The Nuggets are averaging an NBA-best 110.3 points at home but could struggle offensively versus Dallas, surrendering just 96.2 points per game on its current winning streak. The Mavericks, whose run includes five straight wins on the road, have lost five of seven when allowing more than 100 points.

The Nuggets had a chance to tie with eight seconds remaining but chose to continue play without calling a timeout, with Nene missing a fallaway. Dallas was defeated in four straight at Denver prior to taking two of the last three - including a 102-101 win Nov. 3 as Nowitzki had 35 points and 12 rebounds. Dallas Mavericks enter Thursday night’s game with the longest active winning streak in the NBA after escaping with another close win. They’ll have to get by one of the hottest scorers in the league, though, in order to extend their run. The Mavericks will try for an 11th consecutive victory when they visit Carmelo Anthony and a Denver Nuggets team looking to avoid losing three straight at home for the first time in four seasons.
