A near-perfect road trip late last month gave the Minnesota Twins’ division title hopes a key boost. Their current trek could end up being even more rewarding. Before starting a pivotal AL Central showdown, Minnesota will try to earn its fourth series victory in five tries Sunday against the Cleveland Indians. The Twins were tied for second with Detroit and 3 1/2 games back of Chicago in the Central on July 20, but got within a game of the White Sox after going a combined 6-1 at Baltimore and Kansas City. Minnesota trimmed a half-game off that deficit while sweeping Seattle at home but lost twice to Tampa Bay to begin its current 10-game trip. The Twins recovered to win the final two games of that four-game set and bounced back from a series-opening loss to the Indians with a 7-2 victory Saturday night.

The Twins are 1 1/2 games behind the White Sox and head to Chicago for a three-game set starting Tuesday. Joe Mauer went 4 for 5 and drove in a run Saturday, giving him a .553 average and 16 RBIs over his last 10 games, and Jason Kubel homered during his fifth two-hit performance in seven games. Trevor Plouffe broke an 0-for-18 slump by hitting his first major league homer as he came off the bench to replace Alexi Casilla, who left with an injured ankle. Casilla had been starting at second base in place of Orlando Hudson, who will come off the disabled list Sunday. However, Hudson hasn’t played since July 23 because of a strained right oblique and is not guaranteed to be in the lineup.

The Los Angeles Angels and Detroit Tigers were mired in slumps heading into their series at Comerica Park. Entering Sunday afternoon’s finale, it’s the Angels who have broken out of their funk. Los Angeles will try to keep that momentum going by completing its first three-game road sweep of the Tigers in 12 years. The Angels had dropped 12 of 16 before heading into Detroit but have outscored the Tigers 14-3 with most of those runs coming during a 10-1 rout Saturday night. Despite the absence of Torii Hunter, Los Angeles produced 13 hits. Hunter, who leads the Angels with a .294 average, began a four-game suspension for throwing a bag of balls on the field after being ejected in Friday night’s 4-2 victory.

Angels infielder Alberto Callaspo went 3 for 4 in his best game since coming over in a trade with Kansas City on July 22, Mike Napoli—hitting .346 with seven RBIs in his last seven games—had two hits and three RBIs, and Juan Rivera had two hits and drove in two runs to give him seven RBIs in his last five contests. Trevor Bell hopes to get similar support as he tries to earn his first win as a starter this season and lead Los Angeles to three straight wins for the first time since July 15-17. The right-hander, who has never faced the Tigers, is 0-1 with a 6.23 ERA in two starts. Bell, 1-2 with a 9.13 ERA over six career starts, gave up four runs over 3 1-3 innings during a 6-4 loss at Texas on July 25 but put together a solid effort in Baltimore on Tuesday. He didn’t receive a decision after allowing two runs and four hits over 5 1-3 innings in a 6-3 defeat.

The first two games of the Tampa Bay Rays’ weekend series in Toronto couldn’t have gone much worse. The Rays could be in store for another tough go with Andy Sonnanstine set to make a spot start against the high-powered Blue Jays in Sunday’s finale. Toronto took advantage of two Tampa Bay errors to hand the Rays a 2-1 loss in the Friday opener. It was a disheartening defeat for a Tampa Bay team battling New York for first place in the AL East, but not nearly as embarrassing as Saturday’s 17-11 loss. Toronto hit eight homers, second most in franchise history, in plating a run in every inning but the eighth against a Rays club that leads the AL with a 3.68 ERA. The Blue Jays, tops in the majors with 175 homers, finished with season highs in runs and hits.

Tampa Bay, which has not been swept since May 24-26, has lost a season-worst four consecutive games. The Rays’ last victory came Tuesday over Minnesota in Jeff Niemann’s most recent start. His next turn was Sunday, but he was scratched with a sore right shoulder. The injury isn’t considered serious and Niemann is expected to miss only one start. That forced Maddon to turn to Sonnanstine, who is expected to be activated from the disabled list to make his first start of the year. Sonnanstine, out since July 18 because of a strained left hamstring, has made 30 relief appearances this season. The right-hander hasn’t started against the Blue Jays since 2008, and is 2-2 with a 5.92 ERA in seven career games against them.

1:10 pm EDT Sun Aug 8, 2010

It’s been more than eight years since the St. Louis Cardinals last lost a series in South Florida. With a key NL Central clash on tap for this week, it will be especially important for the Cardinals to keep that streak intact Sunday when they decide their three-game set with the Florida Marlins. St. Louis has won its series in Miami in each of the last seven years since dropping two of three July 30-Aug. 1, 2002, and Friday night’s 7-0 victory gave it a chance to continue that run. The Cardinals scored two runs in the ninth inning Saturday to take a 4-3 lead, but Dan Uggla’s home run tied it and the Marlins won 5-4 on Hanley Ramirez’s RBI double in the 10th.

Ramirez’s hit ended a season-worst five-game losing streak for Florida. The star shortstop also homered for the second time in six August games after he was homerless in his final 24 July contests. La Russa may expect more from his team on the road. The Cardinals have dropped six of their last eight road series, going 9-17 away from home since the beginning of June. What appears to be the Cardinals’ most important remaining road series begins Monday against Cincinnati, which has won three straight to increase its division lead over St. Louis to 1 1/2 games. First, Jeff Suppan looks to build on his first win in nearly 11 months. In his eighth start for St. Louis since being signed as a free agent June 14, Suppan pitched 5 1-3 shutout innings last Saturday in an 11-1 win over Pittsburgh.

1:35 pm EDT Sun Aug 8, 2010

Whichever team wins Sunday’s finale between the Atlanta Braves and San Francisco Giants will capture the season series, but the clubs may have more important meetings ahead. The potential postseason foes are set to complete a tight four-game set at Turner Field, with San Francisco’s Jonathan Sanchez and Atlanta’s Derek Lowe looking to continue the trend of strong starting pitching. Neither team has scored more than three runs in any of the first three games in Atlanta, with the clubs trading 3-2 victories before the Braves won 3-0 on Saturday night. Atlanta extended its NL East lead to two games over Philadelphia, improving its team ERA to 1.55 in seven August games. In this series, Braves starters have allowed three runs and 13 hits in 21 innings.

If the season ended Saturday, Atlanta would face San Francisco in an NL division series. While trailing San Diego by one game in the NL West, the Giants remain 1 1/2 games ahead of St. Louis and Philadelphia in the wild-card chase. San Francisco’s pitching, which ranks second in the majors with a 3.39 ERA, has kept the team in this series, but the Giants’ bats have been slumping. Hudson and Billy Wagner limited San Francisco to three hits Saturday, and the Giants have totaled six runs - with no homers - while losing three of four. The home run drought matches the club’s longest of the season. That may bode well for Lowe as the Giants face a second straight sinkerballer. Both Hudson and Lowe rank among the top five in the majors in ground ball-to-fly ball ratio.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are doing their best to extend Colorado’s struggles on the road. Coming off an extra-inning victory, the Pirates look to win their third straight home series against the Rockies on Sunday. Trying to remain a postseason contender, Colorado has lost eight of nine on the road to fall to 21-34 away from Coors Field and Saturday’s loss was particularly tough. Rookie Pedro Alvarez hit a three-run homer with two outs in the 10th inning to give Pittsburgh an 8-7 victory. The Pirates have won two of three in this series to improve to 6-3 at home against Colorado since the Rockies swept a three-game set at PNC Park in 2007.

The Rockies’ Ian Stewart had tied the game with a three-run homer in the ninth and Todd Helton gave them a 7-5 lead with a two-run shot in the 10th. However, Huston Street blew his second save when Alvarez hit his second three-run homer in as many nights. Nine of Alvarez’s 10 homers this season have come at PNC Park. Colorado looks to bounce back against Pittsburgh’s Paul Maholm, who looks to avoid a fifth straight loss to the Rockies. Maholm is 1-5 with a 6.26 ERA in seven starts - six on the road - against Colorado, including 0-4 with a 7.28 ERA in his last five. He allowed eight runs in 5 1-3 innings of a 9-3 loss to the Rockies on July 29. In his only home start against Colorado, Maholm threw seven scoreless innings in a 3-1 loss May 15, 2009.

1:35 pm EDT Sun Aug 8, 2010

A day after their longest home winning streak in 19 years ended, the Philadelphia Phillies must be very confident they won’t lose again Sunday at Citizens Bank Park with Roy Halladay on the mound. The Phillies ace has been brilliant at home recently, has already dominated the New York Mets once this year and now faces them in the first of two straight outings in this series finale. Halladay is 3-0 with a 0.75 ERA in his last three outings, striking out nine each time. His return to the site of his perfect game May 29 was a successful one Tuesday, as he allowed one run in seven innings of a 6-1 victory at Florida. Halladay has been extremely tough in his last five starts at Citizens Bank Park, going 4-0 with a 0.43 ERA. It’s where he faced the Mets in his lone start against them this year, pitching a three-hitter in a 10-0 victory May 1.

The right-hander also is slated to pitch against New York next weekend at Citi Field. Halladay didn’t face Carlos Beltran earlier this season, and the Mets center fielder is 11 for 27 against him. The Phillies had won 12 straight at home - their longest streak since a 16-game run in 1991 - before losing 1-0 to the Mets on Saturday. New York improved to 5-3 against Philadelphia this year as Johan Santana pitched into the eighth inning to outduel Cole Hamels, who gave up a homer to Jeff Francoeur in the seventh. Francoeur came up with his second go-ahead homer on this road trip, having hit a solo shot in the ninth inning Tuesday in a 3-2 win at Atlanta. His latest came on a day when he was told by manager Jerry Manuel that he would platoon with Fernando Martinez.

1:35 pm EDT Sun Aug 8, 2010

Now that the Chicago White Sox have ended Baltimore’s unbeaten run under Buck Showalter, they can focus on securing a winning road trip. Mark Buehrle tries to win his third straight decision as the AL Central-leading White Sox continue their four-game series with the Orioles on Sunday afternoon. Carlos Quentin homered and Alex Rios drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning as Chicago evened the set with a 4-2 win Saturday. While the White Sox improved to 4-2 on an eight-game trip, Baltimore lost for the first time in five games since Showalter took over as manager Tuesday. The Orioles have shown signs of life under Showalter but could not hold a 2-0 lead as the White Sox scored a run in each of the final three innings. Baltimore could have a hard time bouncing back against Buehrle. The left-hander allowed two runs in 7 2-3 innings of a 12-2 win over Detroit on Tuesday to improve to 2-0 with a 3.32 ERA in his last three starts.

Buehrle is 5-3 with a 2.91 ERA in 12 starts against Baltimore, which counters with Jeremy Guthrie. The right-hander record three wins in his first 19 starts but has a chance for a third in four outings Sunday. Guthrie, 2-1 with a 1.95 ERA in his last four starts, allowed three runs in seven innings of a 6-3 win over the Angels on Tuesday. He is 2-0 with a 3.04 ERA in his last four starts at Camden Yards. Guthrie is 2-3 with a 4.79 ERA in six starts against Chicago, going 0-2 with a 7.47 ERA in three at Baltimore. Quentin, who has 22 home runs, is 3 for 6 with a homer against Guthrie. Chicago could be without catcher A.J. Pierzynski, who left Saturday’s game after injuring his ankle while running the bases in the seventh inning.

2:10 pm EDT Sun Aug 8, 2010

Yovani Gallardo has been the most reliable starter for a Milwaukee rotation that has struggled this season. The Brewers have come to rely on their ace to get the best of the Houston Astros. The right-hander tries for a fourth straight victory over the Astros as the Brewers look to complete a three-game sweep at Miller Park on Sunday afternoon. Milwaukee’s starters have a 4.83 ERA, among the worst in the majors. That’s not been because of Gallardo, who has won two of three outings since coming off the disabled list with an oblique strain. Gallardo allowed a run, two hits and matched a career-high with 12 strikeouts in six innings of an 18-1 win over the Cubs on Monday. He bounced back after giving up six runs in 2 2-3 innings of a 12-4 home loss to Cincinnati on July 27.

Gallardo, 6-2 with a 2.72 ERA versus Houston, has won his last three starts against the Astros. He gave up four runs in six innings of a 7-5 home victory June 29. A week after totaling two runs while being swept at Houston, Milwaukee can return the favor after scoring 11 in the first two meetings this weekend. The Brewers have won four of five after a 5-2 victory Saturday. Corey Hart had three hits, Prince Fielder drove in two runs and Rickie Weeks led off the game with an inside-the-park home run. Though no longer the closer, Trevor Hoffman recorded his sixth save of the season, leaving him three shy of 600 for his career Fielder has five RBIs in the series and 11 over his last five games. He is 6 for 17 in his last four against the Astros. Weeks has a career-high 23 home runs and set a Brewers’ record with his seventh leadoff homer this season. The second baseman is batting .364 against Houston this year.

When Travis Wood took the mound at Wrigley Field last month, he threw seven-plus solid innings in his major league debut. The left-hander looks for another strong performance against the Cubs on Sunday when the NL Central-leading Reds go for their first series sweep in Chicago in five seasons. Wood, the Reds’ minor league pitcher of the year in 2009, allowed two runs, two hits and struck out four in a 3-2, 10-inning win over Chicago on July 1. Wood is 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA in his last two starts. He threw seven innings of two-hit ball and did not allow a runner past second base in Monday’s 4-0 win at Pittsburgh. Things have gone Cincinnati’s way versus the Cubs this season, winning nine of 12. The bullpen yielded two ninth-inning runs Saturday, but the Reds held on for a 4-3 victory, their eighth in 10 games, to move a season-best 15 games above .500.

Cincinnati, which won three of four in Chicago from July 1-4, will look for its first sweep at Wrigley Field since Aug. 8-10, 2005. Baker was managing the Cubs in that series. Current skipper Lou Piniella has seen his team drop nine of 10 to fall a season-worst 16 games below .500. He will give fellow rookie Thomas Diamond the ball as Chicago tries to salvage the finale before beginning a seven-game trip Monday against NL wildcard-leading San Francisco and archrival St. Louis. Making his major league debut Tuesday, Diamond struck out 10 and gave up three runs and seven hits over six innings of a 4-3 loss to Milwaukee. He joined Mark Prior as the only Cubs since 1920 to debut with double digits in strikeouts.

Trevor Cahill is solidifying his status as the Oakland Athletics ace. The AL West-leading Texas Rangers know all about his ability to dominate. The 22-year-old Cahill looks to extend the longest scoreless streak of his brief career Sunday when the A’s face the Rangers to conclude a three-game series. In his second major league season, Cahill leads the A’s in wins and is among the AL leaders in ERA while allowing a league-low .192 average. The All-Star right-hander is riding a streak of 18 consecutive scoreless innings spanning three starts, winning his last two. He tossed a three-hitter Monday in a 6-0 win over Kansas City for his first complete game. Cahill has dominated the Rangers, going 5-1 with a 1.83 ERA in seven starts. He’s been particularly good in three meetings against them this year, posting a 2-0 record with a 0.96 ERA.

The latest of those matchups was July 28, when Cahill yielded two hits in eight scoreless innings of a 3-1 win. Among the Rangers to have struggled versus Cahill are Elvis Andrus, Vladimir Guerrero and Nelson Cruz, who are a combined 6 for 38 against him. Cahill looks to shut down Texas just as teammate Gio Gonzalez did Saturday, giving up four hits in seven scoreless innings of a 6-2 win. The A’s are looking for their 10th win in 11 day games and they own baseball’s best afternoon record at 26-11. Saturday’s victory was originally scheduled as a night game but was changed for TV.

If there’s a bright spot for the Seattle Mariners in this dismal season, it’s been the work of Jason Vargas at Safeco Field. The left-hander has been steady at home and looks to take advantage of a struggling Kansas City Royals’ offense in the finale of a three-game series on Sunday. Vargas has the fifth-best ERA in the AL at home, going 6-2 with a 2.29 ERA in 12 starts. He surrendered two runs over six innings Tuesday to earn a 3-2 victory over AL West-leading Texas. Vargas did not fare well in his lone career outing against the Royals, allowing eight runs over seven innings in an 8-2 road loss Aug. 6, 2009. Kansas City is 9-17 against left-handed starters this year - the second-worst mark in the AL behind Seattle, which fell to 10-26 in such games after being stifled by Bruce Chen in a 2-1 loss Saturday.

Chen yielded a solo home run to Russell Branyan along with a pair of singles over a season-high seven innings. Closer Joakim Soria picked up his 31st save in 33 opportunities to tie Tampa Bay’s Rafael Soriano for the AL lead while matching Jeff Montgomery’s 1993 club record with his 24th in a row. The Royals managed six hits as their offense continued to sputter on this road trip. They have scored nine runs while hitting .188 in the first five games of a nine-game West Coast stretch. A youth movement has given Kansas City’s Gregor Blanco and Kila Ka’aihue increased playing time. Blanco is 2 for 8 in this series and Ka’aihue 0 for 7. Ichiro Suzuki, meanwhile, went 0 for 4 on Saturday, ending his 18-game hitting streak against Kansas City. He batted .408 during the run. The Mariners fell to 3-5 against the Royals, losing the season series for the third straight year.

4:10 pm EDT Sun Aug 8, 2010

The uncanny consistency that has kept the San Diego Padres atop the NL West for much of the season may finally be fading. The Padres face the prospect of their first three-game losing streak in nearly three months Sunday if they cannot defeat the Arizona Diamondbacks, who hope to become the second team to sweep San Diego this season. The Los Angeles Dodgers swept the Padres from May 14-16, the only time in 2010 that surprising San Diego has lost three in a row. The Padres’ steady play is perhaps the primary reason they remain one game ahead of San Francisco in the division, but they’re looking more vulnerable than ever after losing four of five and six of nine. Last-place Arizona limited the Padres to three hits in a 2-1 win Friday, the third time on this road trip that San Diego has scored one run or fewer.

The Padres’ bats came alive Saturday, erasing a 5-0 deficit and tying the game on Adrian Gonzalez’s ninth-inning home run, but Chris Young’s second homer of the game gave the Diamondbacks a 6-5 victory. Despite winning all six of its home games against the Diamondbacks this season, San Diego has lost four of five at Chase Field, where the Padres are 10-22 since the start of 2007. They still like their chances of avoiding the sweep with Mat Latos on the mound. The emerging 22-year-old has limited opponents to two or fewer runs in 14 of his last 15 starts while going 10-2 with a 1.66 ERA. But despite another fine outing Tuesday at Los Angeles, he was tagged with his first loss since June 4 in a 2-1 defeat.

Ted Lilly was stellar in his Los Angeles Dodgers debut, but that victory is one of only three in the last 11 games for the team. Attempting to boost his club’s faint postseason hopes, Lilly will try to build off that performance Sunday in a matchup with former teammate Jason Marquis, who makes his first start in nearly four months for the Washington Nationals. The Dodgers acquired Lilly and infielder Ryan Theriot from the Chicago Cubs on July 31, hoping those two players could help them rally for a third straight division title. The left-hander did his part to contribute by allowing one run, two hits and no walks over seven innings of a 2-1 win over NL West-leading San Diego on Tuesday night. Torre’s club moved within seven games of the Padres after James Loney delivered a 3-2 win with a 10th-inning single Saturday night.

Lilly, though, has not earned consecutive victories all season. He hasn’t faced the Nationals since April 27, 2008, and is 3-2 with a 2.48 ERA against them since their move from Montreal before the 2005 season. After being drafted by the Dodgers in 1996, Lilly was traded two years later to Montreal and made his major league debut with the Expos in 1999 before joining Torre’s New York Yankees’ club the next season. Lilly is on his sixth team in 12 seasons and now squares off with his teammate for two years in Chicago. Marquis hasn’t pitched since April 18, having undergone surgery to remove bone chips in his throwing elbow. Marquis, set to make $7.5 million in 2011 - the final season of a two-year deal - is 5-2 with a 2.35 ERA in 11 career starts against Los Angeles. The most recent was a 5-3 loss with Colorado on Oct. 4 at Dodger Stadium. That defeat ended his five-game win streak over the Dodgers. Marquis is 4-1 with a 1.94 ERA in his last six starts against them.

The New York Yankees showed they could beat the Boston Red Sox without Alex Rodriguez in the lineup. They’re hoping they don’t have to do so on consecutive days. The third baseman might be back on the field when the Yankees try to add to their lead in the AL East with another home victory over Boston on Sunday night. Rodriguez was hit in the left leg by a hard ground ball off the bat of Lance Berkman during batting practice Saturday. The three-time AL MVP limped around before falling to the ground with his hands on his face, but X-rays were negative. The Yankees, however, didn’t miss a beat without Rodriguez, beating the Red Sox 5-2 as Ramiro Pena singled and drove in two runs in his place.

The Yankees hope that pain subsides, considering Rodriguez is among baseball’s leaders with 88 RBIs and hitting .324 with two homers and nine RBIs against the Red Sox this season. He had an RBI single in Friday’s 6-3 loss in the opener of this four-game series. New York leads the East by 1 1/2 games over Tampa Bay, while Boston sits six back. The Yankees have won 15 of the last 20 meetings with the Red Sox, going 9-2 at home, but A.J. Burnett has had major problems with them. The right-hander is 0-3 with a 9.40 ERA in six starts against Boston since joining New York before last season. He was hit hard in his most recent matchup, surrendering nine runs and nine hits in 4 1-3 innings of a 9-3 loss in Boston on May 9.
