The Toronto Raptors are looking more and more like a potentially dangerous team in the Eastern Conference playoff picture after winning six in a row and 12 of 13 at Air Canada Centre. The Sacramento Kings are working on a much less impressive streak. Toronto looks to win seven straight at home for the first time in nearly three years Sunday afternoon by dealing the woeful Kings an 11th consecutive road loss. The Raptors were 11-17 as of Dec. 16 and were on the outside of the postseason race, but they’ve gone 16-6 since then to move into fifth place in the conference.

The Raptors have gone from allowing 108.6 points per game in their first 28 to 100.8 over their last 22, and their field-goal percentage of 49.3 since mid-December is the best in the NBA. They’ve shot 50.7 percent in winning their last six at home by 10.0 points per game and were hot from 3-point range Wednesday. All five starters scored at least 14 points and Toronto went 10 of 19 from beyond the arc in a 108-99 win over New Jersey.

The Boston Celtics and Orlando Magic were the last two teams to represent the Eastern Conference in the NBA finals, and both entered this season with plans to contend for the title. Neither looked like an elite team in its latest game. The Magic will try to shake off an embarrassing home loss before Sunday’s trip to Boston, where the struggling Celtics hope to regain some confidence after averting what would have been an even more ignominious defeat. Following a 2-7 stretch last month, Orlando seemed to have regained its footing by winning seven of eight going into Friday night’s meeting with lowly Washington.

But the reigning East champions blew an early 21-point lead in a 92-91 loss to the Wizards, who outscored Orlando 39-17 in the third quarter. Magic coach Stan Van Gundy wasn’t pleased with his team, which was outrebounded 52-41 even though Dwight Howard had 18 boards. The Magic were also inconsistent offensively, and Vince Carter’s shooting slump continued with a 5-of-17 night from the field. In 11 games since returning from a shoulder injury, Carter is shooting 33.1 percent and averaging 10.8 points.

Alex Ovechkin and the NHL-leading Washington Capitals are getting closer to the Pittsburgh Penguins’ 17-year-old record for the longest winning streak in league history. Sidney Crosby and the Penguins will try to end the Capitals’ outstanding run Sunday afternoon, but a major snowstorm may stop them both. Ovechkin, the two-time reigning Hart Trophy winner, leads the NHL with 39 goals and 82 points, and the Capitals have the most wins, points and goals.

The superstar left wing has 13 goals and 19 assists in the last 16 games, helping Washington win 15 of them—including their current franchise-record 13-game winning streak. The Penguins were the last team to have a longer run, reeling off an NHL-record 17 in a row from March 9-April 10, 1993. The Capitals have already beaten the reigning Stanley Cup champs once during their current streak, a 6-3 victory Jan. 21 in Pittsburgh as Ovechkin scored two goals and set up another by Mike Knuble. Ovechkin helped Washington move closer to the Pens’ record Friday, getting one goal and one assist in a 5-2 win over Atlanta.

The way the Boston Bruins have been losing games on this historic skid has been heartbreaking. The Montreal Canadiens have contributed to this pain, handing the Bruins an excruciating loss just three days ago. Coming off yet another shootout defeat, Boston looks to avoid matching a franchise-worst 11-game losing streak Sunday when it visits a Montreal team trying to win its fourth in a row. The Bruins have outplayed a number of opponents in their last 10 games, but they don’t have any wins to show for it.

Boston outshot opponents 165-111 on a just-completed four-game homestand, but it was outscored 13-7. The Bruins led in all four games - twice by two goals - and suffered three 3-2 shootout losses. The Bruins haven’t won since defeating Western Conference-leading San Jose 2-1 in a shootout Jan. 14 and are one loss away from matching a franchise-worst 11-game losing streak, set from Dec. 3, 1924-Jan. 5, 1925, their inaugural season. They are 1-10-3 since Jan. 7, but they’re surprisingly still in the playoff mix, just two points out of eighth place in the East.

There may be more than a few people who are having a tough time hashing out their loyalties for Super Bowl XLIV. They’ll be watching a pair of quarterbacks, though, who are about as decisive as it gets. Peyton Manning faces his hometown team, once quarterbacked by his father, as the Indianapolis Colts try for their second title in four years Sunday at Miami in a matchup with Drew Brees and a New Orleans Saints team making its Super Bowl debut. Three years ago, Manning won his first championship, leading Indianapolis to a 29-17 win over Chicago in South Florida. He’s returning to the same site, this time to face a team that has deep roots in his family.

New Orleans is the city where his father, Archie, played and still lives. Manning played at Isidore Newman High School in New Orleans, as did his brothers, Eli - who won a Super Bowl with the New York Giants two years ago - and Cooper. If Manning can outduel Brees in what has the potential to be one of the highest-scoring Super Bowls, many fans in New Orleans will certainly be celebrating their hometown hero’s accomplishment.
