Derrick Rose didn’t let a bruised hip keep him from helping the Chicago Bulls dominate the New York Knicks in the teams’ first game after the All-Star break. The Bulls hope for more of the same from their All-Star guard as they try to complete a home-and-home sweep of the struggling Knicks onWednesday night at Madison Square Garden. Still sore from a hard foul by Orlando’s Dwight Howard last Wednesday and coming off 15 minutes of play in his first All-Star game Sunday, Rose scored 29 points in Chicago’s 118-85 home rout of New York on Tuesday.

The reigning NBA rookie of the year says he’ll likely have to deal with lingering effects of the injury for a bit longer, but is confident it won’t hinder his play during a stretch of four games in five days. Rose showed little signs of being injured, making 14 of 18 shots, including his first nine. The Bulls shot a season-high 60.5 percent while winning for the third time in four games. Rose scored 26 in the Bulls’ 88-81 loss at New York on Dec. 22. Joakim Noah had 10 with 21 rebounds in that contest, but could miss his sixth straight game with plantar fasciitis in his left foot as the Bulls begin a two-game road trip that concludes Friday at Minnesota.

Both the Milwaukee Bucks and the Houston Rockets spent the All-Star break in ninth place in their respective conferences, with the Bucks hoping a second-half surge can get them into the playoffs for the first time since 2006. The Rockets haven’t missed the postseason since that year, but could be heading in the wrong direction as they try to avoid their first four-game losing streak in more than two years Wednesday night in Milwaukee. The Bucks haven’t played since last Wednesday, when they closed a promising first half with their sixth win in eight games, a 97-77 victory at New Jersey.

Bogut is averaging career highs with 16.0 points and 2.2 blocked shots while adding 10.2 rebounds per game, but Jennings has been the biggest revelation after Milwaukee drafted him 10th overall last June. Jennings leads the team with 16.9 points and 6.2 assists, and he had 22 points and eight assists in Friday night’s Rookie Challenge, helping to lead the rookies to a 140-128 win over the sophomores. The only first-year player ahead of Jennings in scoring is Sacramento’s Tyreke Evans. Jennings would also like to break out of a brief slump after averaging 10.5 points and shooting 31.1 percent in his last six games. He’s been held to single digits in points four times in that stretch after failing to reach 10 points four times in his first 45 games.

With Chris Paul out, Deron Williams got more minutes than any other Western Conference point guard in the All-Star game. The extra playing time may have helped keep Williams sharp for the surging Utah Jazz. Williams and the Jazz look to win five straight road games for the first time in two years Wednesday night in a matchup with a New Orleans Hornets team that has struggled to overcome the loss of Paul. Williams played 28 minutes off the bench in Sunday’s All-Star game, posting 14 points and six assists as the West lost 141-139. If Paul was healthy, Williams probably wouldn’t have gotten as much time.

Paul will likely be sidelined for at least another three weeks after having surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. While New Orleans is 3-4 without Paul, Utah has been outstanding in recent weeks with Williams leading the offense. Williams, selected one spot ahead of Paul with the third overall pick in the 2005 draft, had 17 points and 15 assists in his first game following the break, leading the Jazz to a 104-95 win over Houston on Tuesday night in the opener of a four-game trip. Utah won for the 14th time in its last 16 games and now has a chance to win five in a row on the road for the first time since the 2007-08 season.

Trade rumors are surrounding the Phoenix Suns leading up to Thursday’s deadline, but those didn’t seem to have any negative impact during their first game following the All-Star break. After trotting out their revamped roster for the first time, the Dallas Mavericks still appear to have some work to do. Phoenix can win a sixth straight road game and pass stumbling Dallas in the Western Conference standings when they wrap up their season series Wednesday night at American Airlines Center.

The Mavericks and Suns were active in trade talks during the NBA’s All-Star weekend in Dallas, but it was the Mavs who made the big move, acquiring Caron Butler, Brendan Haywood and DeShawn Stevenson from Washington in a seven-player deal. While Dallas’ trade was made with contending this season in mind, rumors have swirled that Phoenix is considering a trade of Amare Stoudemire.

With two months left in the regular season, the Atlanta Hawks have their sights set on winning the Southeast Division and earning one of the top two seeds in the Eastern Conference. Coming out of the All-Star break, the Hawks begin that quest by opening a four-game western road trip Wednesday night against the Los Angeles Clippers, who could have at least one of their new acquisitions in the lineup. Atlanta is tied with Boston for third place in the East and 1 1/2 games behind Southeast leader Orlando. While it might be asking too much for them to catch Cleveland atop the East standings, the division title could give the Hawks the second seed in the conference.

Improving on their 12-12 road record could also help their cause. The Hawks, who snapped a three-game road losing streak with a win at Memphis on Feb. 9, can do that with a second consecutive victory over the Clippers, losers of five in a row and nine of 10. Joe Johnson scored 34 points while Jamal Crawford added 22 and set an NBA record with his 24th 4-point play in Atlanta’s 103-97 home over Los Angeles on Feb. 3. Though the Hawks fared well against the Clippers earlier this month, they hope the break will help them bounce back from a 94-76 loss to Miami last Wednesday.

The Sacramento Kings find themselves with some rare road momentum. Still, they certainly aren’t in any position to expect a cakewalk at Oracle Arena, even with Monta Ellis hobbled. With a chance to win three straight games away from home for the first time in over two years, the Kings may not have to contend with Ellis as they meet the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday night. Sacramento was flat in its first game following the All-Star break, shooting 38.1 percent in a 95-92 home loss to Boston on Tuesday for its 19th defeat in 23 contests.

Sacramento averaged 108.2 points in its previous six games, winning each of its last two road matchups during that span. This is the second time Sacramento has won two straight road games this season. The Kings haven’t won three in a row away from Arco Arena since Dec. 18, 2007-Jan. 2, 2008. Though Golden State has lost 10 of 11 and could be without Ellis for the third straight game, Sacramento may not have an easy time continuing its road success.
