Vancouver has won its last two at St. Louis and three of four overall versus the Blues. After a five-game winning streak, St. Louis has lost 13 of 17, allowing 3.5 goals per game in that stretch. Alex Burrows also added a pair of goals. While Luongo continues his stellar play, the recent struggles of Jaroslav Halak have contributed to St. Louis’ freefall toward the bottom of the Western Conference. Halak was pulled midway through the second period after allowing three goals on 20 shots in a 3-1 loss in Minnesota on Saturday. The Blues have lost seven of nine, with Halak going 1-3-2 with a 3.62 GAA during that stretch.

The St. Louis Blues were the last team to prevent that from happening. Vancouver continues its chase of the Presidents’ Trophy at St. Louis, where the Blues are looking to revive their fading playoff hopes. Luongo has gone 16-0-5 with a 1.90 goals-against average since a 3-2 regulation loss to the Blues on Dec. 5, including a 3-1 victory in the rematch Dec. 20. He won his sixth straight start Saturday, making 24 saves in a 4-2 win against Calgary. For all of Luongo’s success, he credits his team for playing well in front of him. Vancouver, which has an NHL-best 81 points, has killed off 31 straight penalties over its last eight games and 38 of 39 in the last 10.

The Capitals have scored two or fewer goals in nine of 13 games after falling 4-1 to Los Angeles on Saturday. After two straight home losses, Washington’s road trip may have come at a good time. The Capitals are 6-2-2 in their last 10 away from home, holding opponents to two or fewer goals in seven of those matchups. Ovechkin had a goal and an assist, and Alexander Semin had a goal and three assists in last season’s win against Phoenix, which ended a two-game losing streak against the Coyotes. Alex Ovechkin scored his 21st goal just 1:06 into the game, but the Kings scored four unanswered goals on Semyon Varlamov, who fell to 1-4-2 with a 2.52 GAA in his last seven starts.

The Phoenix Coyotes shoot for their fifth straight win Monday night against Washington while looking to keep pace in the tight Western Conference playoff race.
Bryzgalov improved to 4-0-0 with a 0.98 goals-against average in his last four starts, beating Chicago 3-2 in a shootout Saturday. He started the streak with back-to-back shutouts against Minnesota and Colorado, then extended it by stoning Patrick Kane on a breakaway attempt in with just over a minute left in overtime. However, Bryzgalov lost his only start against the Capitals, a 4-2 defeat Jan. 23, 2010, in the teams’ last meeting.

Colorado Avalanche, though, have lost four of five to the Flames. Glencross scored twice during a 4-2 victory in Denver on Nov. 9 and the Flames held on for a 3-2 home win over the Avalanche on Dec. 31. In the first meeting Oct. 28, Daniel Winnik scored with 2:20 left to give Colorado a 6-5 win in Calgary. Sacco’s team will try to take advantage of a Flames club that has given up nine goals in the last two games after allowing 12 in its previous seven. The loss was Colorado’s second in a row since Peter Forsberg rejoined the club. The 37-year-old forward had no points, a minus-4 rating, four penalty minutes and three shots on goal while playing consecutive nights in his first NHL action since 2007-08.

The Flames had charged from 14th to eighth in the Western Conference before dropping a spot Saturday. A trip to Denver could help Sutter’s team do that. The Flames have won three in a row at the Pepsi Center, and the Avalanche are mired in their longest skid since an 0-7-1 stretch from March 15-April 1, 2009. They’ve been outscored 26-11 over the seven consecutive defeats and fallen from a tie for seventh in the West to 14th. Matt Duchene gave his team an early third-period lead against Nashville on Saturday, but the Avalanche allowed three unanswered goals in a 5-3 defeat, including the tiebreaker with 2:30 left.

Charlotte has won four of five over the Lakers, and is 6-2 against them since the start of the 2006-07 season. Jackson, who averages a team-best 19.2 points, scored 51 in the two games against Los Angeles last season, while Gerald Wallace is averaging 17.0 points and 8.8 rebounds in the last four games he was healthy enough to face the Lakers, all wins. Los Angeles arrives in Charlotte coming off Sunday’s 89-75 loss to Orlando after having won the first four of a seven-game road trip. The Lakers held their fourth opponent in six games to fewer than 90 points, but finished with a season low in scoring and shot 39.3 percent, the first time they finished below 40 percent since losing at San Antonio on Dec. 28.

Charlotte Bobcats are showing they can finally beat winning teams. This shouldn’t come as a surprise to the Los Angeles Lakers. The Bobcats look to continue their dominance over the two-time defending NBA champs Monday night when they host a Lakers team trying to bounce back from a disappointing loss. While Los Angeles seems certain to make a sixth straight playoff berth, leading second-place Phoenix by a comfortable margin in the Pacific Division, a second postseason appearance for Charlotte is far more in doubt. The Bobcats, who made the playoffs last spring for the first time in the franchise’s seven-year history, are two games back of Indiana for eighth place in the East.

The Knicks, playing without star Amare Stoudemire, shot 47.1 percent from 3-point range as the New Jersey missed out on its first three-game winning streak since a four-game run Jan. 31-Feb. 7, 2009. New Jersey may need to improve quickly when it comes to defending the arc. San Antonio went 13 of 25 on 3s on Saturday and is near the top of the league in 3-point shooting at 39.5 percent. Harris scored 16 points in a win over Charlotte on Friday, and has back-to-back double-digit scoring efforts for the first time since Jan. 24 and 26. He’s averaged 19.8 points in his last five games against San Antonio.Rookie Derrick Favors had nine points and a season-high 14 rebounds versus the Knicks.

San Antonio faces New Jersey on Monday night looking for its sixth victory in seven games as it nears the end of a nine-game road trip. San Antonio Spurs were able to rest their starters as they capped a stretch of four games in five nights with a much-needed rout. That probably doesn’t bode well for the New Jersey Nets. Spurs coach Greg Popovich made his first change to the starting five this season in a 118-94 victory over Washington on Saturday, inserting George Hill in place of Manu Ginobili. Hill scored 18 points and went 4 of 4 from 3-point range, while Ginobili played only eight-plus minutes and had six points.

Atlanta has won seven of its last nine games away from Philips Arena, but continuing that success on this trip won’t be easy. The two-week trek includes stops in New York, Phoenix, Golden State, Portland, Denver and Los Angeles to face the Lakers.
One of the few non-contenders the Hawks will visit is Detroit, a place where they typically have trouble. Atlanta lost 103-80 at The Palace on Dec. 14, its third straight defeat there. Josh Smith led the Hawks with 26 points and Horford added 17, but Atlanta’s bench was outscored 46-14. However, the Pistons have now dropped three straight home games and five of their last six, including consecutive losses to open a season-high five-game homestand. They were tied with Portland with just over 1 minute remaining Sunday, but committed two costly turnovers down the stretch and wound up losing 105-100.

Atlanta embarks on its longest road trip of the season following Saturday’s 88-86 loss to Charlotte on Stephen Jackson’s last-second jumper. The Hawks appeared in complete control, leading by 22 points late in the second quarter, but shot just 29.3 percent after halftime. Although it was an ugly way to lose, Atlanta received an encouraging performance from Al Horford. The two-time All-Star center finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds in a team-high 42 minutes after missing two games with a lower back contusion. The defeat to the Bobcats came four days after Atlanta suffered an embarrassing 117-83 loss to Philadelphia, snapping a three-game winning streak.

TimberWolves sorely missed Michael Beasley’s offense against Philadelphia, but he is hoping to return to the lineup Monday after sitting out the last three games with a sprained ankle. Beasley is averaging 20.7 points against the Blazers this season. Wolves are coming off Saturday’s 107-87 loss to Philadelphia, their second straight defeat following surprising road wins over New Orleans and Houston. Minnesota, 4-16 since Jan. 3, shot just 36.4 percent against the 76ers, and Kevin Love had a bit of an off night. Love had 16 points and 13 rebounds for his 40th consecutive double-double, but this came after he averaged 23.0 points and 15.3 boards in his previous three games. The first-time All-Star is averaging 23.7 points and 17.7 rebounds against Portland this year.

Portland won its fourth straight Sunday, 105-100 over Detroit, behind Aldridge’s 36 points - his lowest scoring total in the last three games. Aldridge had a career-best 42 points in last Monday’s 109-103 win over Chicago and 37 in Friday’s 102-96 victory over Toronto. He has recorded four of his six highest-scoring games of the season in the last two weeks. Most of this offense has come since Aldridge was passed over as a reserve for the Western Conference All-Star team, announced Feb. 3. The Timberwolves would probably agree. Aldridge, who leads the Blazers in scoring at 22.1 points, is averaging 33.7 points on 62.1 percent shooting and 10.7 rebounds in three games against Minnesota this season.

The Bucks have dropped seven of eight following a 103-97 home loss to Indiana on Saturday. Milwaukee could use a better performance from its starters after they combined for 46 points against the Pacers. Brandon Jennings has struggled since returning from a broken foot, making 32.7 percent of his shots - 25.0 from beyond the arc - in nine games after missing the previous 19. The point guard finished with 10 points on 3-for-10 shooting Saturday. He’s averaging 16.7 points in three meetings with the Clippers, scoring 12 in last month’s loss. The Bucks could be without forward Corey Maggette after he left Saturday’s loss midway through the first quarter with lower back pain. Maggette, averaging 13.1 points, scored 25 in the most recent matchup with Los Angeles.

The Clippers have dropped five of six thus far through that stretch. Los Angeles (20-34) is only nine wins shy of its total from last season, and would be much closer if not for a dismal 4-20 away record, tying Minnesota for the fewest road victories in the Western Conference. Griffin, though, is doing his part with 20.8 points per game and 12.6 rebounds over the last 10 road contests, tallying 21 points and 15 boards in a 98-93 loss at Toronto on Sunday. The former top overall draft pick leads all rookies with 22.7 points and 12.7 rebounds, and will be the team’s lone representative at the All-Star game at Staples Center on Sunday.

The Nuggets’ lone representative for Sunday’s All-Star game, Anthony is averaging 38.0 points over his last five meetings with the Rockets. Denver won three of those games. A healthy Chauncey Billups could also make a difference against Houston. The point guard left last week’s matchup late in the first quarter with a left knee strain. He returned Thursday, scoring 30 points and getting his ninth assist on Arron Afflalo’s buzzer-beater to clinch a 121-120 win over Dallas. Billups had a much tougher time in Sunday’s loss, finishing with 13 points and six turnovers.

Denver is currently sixth in the Western Conference, but only 1 1/2 games ahead of the ninth-place Grizzlies. The Rockets, last in the Southwest Division, failed to build on last week’s win over Denver, losing 112-108 to Minnesota on Tuesday and 106-102 to the Mavericks on Saturday. Both of those defeats came at home, where Houston has dropped seven of its last 11. After facing Houston, the Nuggets visit Milwaukee on Wednesday before entering the All-Star break. They’re 9-17 on the road, where they’ve lost four of their last five.
