The Chicago Blackhawks appear to be on their way to ending the Detroit Red Wings’ stranglehold on the Central Division. Dominating all of their division foes has helped. The Blackhawks look to add to their leadSunday afternoon when they visit Joe Louis Arena in search of their third straight win over the Red Wings. Chicago (33-11-4) is tied with San Jose at 70 points in the race for its first Presidents’ Trophy since 1991. Within the Central, the Blackhawks have a nine-point lead on second-place Nashville and a 15-point advantage on the Red Wings, who have won eight consecutive division titles and 12 of 15 with a league-record six Presidents’ Trophies and four Stanley Cups in that span.

That puts Chicago on pace to supplant Detroit (24-16-7) in the division after getting eliminated by the Red Wings in last season’s Western Conference finals. The Blackhawks are in such good position in large part because of their 11-3-0 record against division rivals Detroit, Nashville, St. Louis and Columbus. They’ve put together an eight-game winning streak within the division - including a pair of 3-0 wins over the Red Wings in December - while holding a 33-13 scoring advantage. Chicago went 10-7-7 within the Central last season, finishing eight points behind the Wings.

Washington scored eight goals in a lopsided win over the Philadelphia Flyers last month even without Alex Ovechkin. With their superstar forward back in high gear, the Capitals are looking even tougher to beat now. The NHL’s top offensive attack looks to continue its recent scoring binge Sunday against the Flyers, who have shown major improvement since their last game against Washington. Ovechkin was serving a two-game suspension when the Capitals visited Philadelphia on Dec. 5, but Washington still went 4 of 6 on the power play and notched its biggest output of the season in an 8-2 victory.

The two-time reigning Hart Trophy winner has been a major part of the Capitals’ recent surge, winning five of six while averaging more than five goals a game.Ovechkin, who easily leads the NHL with 1.6 points per game, has totaled three goals and nine assists in his last five games. He scored 49 seconds into Friday’s game against Toronto and added a career-high four assists in a 6-1 win. For the season, the Southeast Division-leading Capitals (29-12-6) are averaging 3.7 goals - nearly a half goal more than any other team.

The New York Rangers signed Marian Gaborik to boost their sputtering offense. Now, he’s not scoring, and they’re on another losing streak. Gaborik will try to avoid his longest goal drought in over two years in order to help the Rangers snap a three-game slide Sunday night when they host the Montreal Canadiens in an Original Six matchup. New York (22-19-7) averaged 2.47 goals over the last two seasons to rank only better than the New York Islanders’ 2.36 in that span.

While Gaborik has been sturdy in his first season for the Rangers—ranking among the league leaders with 28 goals and 54 points—the team is still among the lowest scoring in the NHL at 2.48 goals per game. Their offensive woes have been evident during a three-game losing streak, which has seen them outscored 7-1, and Gaborik has gone five games without a goal. A member of Slovakia’s team for next month’s Olympics in Vancouver, Gaborik hasn’t gone six consecutive games without a goal since Oct. 14-25, 2007. Gaborik and the Rangers struggled offensively again Saturday, losing 4-1 at St. Louis while Brian Boyle ended the team’s goal drought at 172 minutes.

It’s no surprise that the Calgary Flames are having trouble scoring with superstar Jarome Iginla mired in his worst drought in well over a decade. They’re not going to a place where goals or wins have come easily for them in recent years. Iginla looks to end his six-game stretch without a point Sunday night when the Flames seek to earn their first road win in 11 tries against the Anaheim Ducks, winners of six straight at home. The star winger is enduring a frustrating slump that has contributed to Calgary (26-16-6) scoring nine goals during a 1-4-1 slide. Iginla’s pointless stretch is his longest since a six-game run Nov. 10-22, 1997.

The last time he failed to record a point in seven straight games was in his rookie season March 4-16, 1997. The Flames are 0-8-2 in Anaheim (21-20-7) since a 5-1 victory on Jan. 19, 2004, scoring two goals or fewer in their last six visits. The Ducks won 3-2 at home in a shootout Nov. 23 in the teams’ lone meeting this season. Iginla scored the tying goal in the third period in that loss to end his six-game drought without one against Anaheim. He hasn’t experienced a victory in 19 games at the Honda Center since he scored the winner in the third period of a 2-1 victory Jan. 13, 1999. Calgary is 0-12-4 with three ties at Anaheim with Iginla since that game.

The Dallas Mavericks haven’t been playing consistent basketball while spending most of the past few weeks at home, but there’s no doubt where they’ve been at their best this season. The Western Conference’s best road team kicks off a five-game Eastern trip Sunday afternoon looking to continue their dominance of the Toronto Raptors, winners of six of their last seven at Air Canada Centre. Dallas (26-13) has won three of five games since returning from a 2-2 road trip, but their best performance in that stretch came away from home - a 112-103 win at San Antonio on Jan. 8.

The Mavericks came into Friday’s home game against Oklahoma City looking to avoid their first three-game losing streak of the season, and Dirk Nowitzki made sure they would. Nowitzki scored 32 points and Jason Terry added 21, as Dallas bounced back from a seven-point halftime deficit by holding the Thunder to 36 percent shooting the rest of the way in a 99-98 win. Only Boston and Cleveland have better points differentials on the road than Dallas, which outscores its opponents by an average of 4.0 points away from home.

The Denver Nuggets posted an impressive victory in Salt Lake City earlier this month while playing without Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups. Having the two stars back in the lineup should help the Nuggets contend with a Utah Jazz team playing some of its best basketball entering the rematch in Denver. The Northwest Division-leading Nuggets look to close out an undefeated homestand and clinch a season series win against the streaking Jazz on Sunday night.

Although Anthony was sidelined with a right knee contusion and Billups was out with a groin strain, five Nuggets scored in double figures and Denver (25-14) snapped a four-game losing streak in Utah with a 105-95 victory on Jan. 2. Rookie point guard Ty Lawson stepped into the starting lineup and led the Nuggets with 23 points and nine assists, and Nene added 22 points as Denver shot 51.2 percent.

After going through a bit of an offensive funk, the Toronto Raptors are suddenly scoring with ease. The Raptors appear to have a good chance of continuing their surge Monday night when they visit a defensively challenged Indiana Pacers team that they already overpowered earlier this season. Although Toronto (19-19) fell 114-107 to Boston on Sunday for its first loss in three games, the offense wasn’t to blame. Chris Bosh had 31 points and 13 rebounds before fouling out and Andrea Bargnani scored 23 for the Raptors, who shot 48.1 percent from the field and made 8 of their 19 3-point attempts.

Toronto, which has won eight of 10, has scored at least 107 points in each of its last three games after reaching that mark just twice in its previous 13. The Raptors’ offensive turnaround has come against some of the best defensive teams in the league. Before becoming just the second team in 20 games to score 107 on the Celtics, Toronto was the first team in 11 games to score at least 105 against Orlando in Wednesday’s 108-103 win. The Pacers (11-25), meanwhile, have been quite susceptible on the defensive end lately, allowing at least 108 points in seven of their last nine.

The New Orleans Hornets have the longest active winning streak in the NBA, but it hasn’t been easy. Following another close victory, the Hornets look to extend their season high winning streak to seven games Monday when they visit the Philadelphia 76ers. After defeating lowly New Jersey 103-99 on Friday, New Orleans (19-16) blew a seven-point fourth-quarter lead Sunday before holding on for a 115-110 win over Washington, another last-place team. That marked the Hornets’ sixth straight win, with all those victories coming by five points or less.

These wins have helped the Hornets, who have won all three road games in 2010 after going 2-13 away from New Orleans to start the season, vault from 12th place in the Western Conference into ninth, one-half game back of Oklahoma City for the final playoff spot. Despite being in the midst of its longest winning streak since a seven-game run Feb. 23-March 7, New Orleans isn’t necessarily playing its best basketball of the season. The Hornets have looked uninspired at times in the fourth quarter over their last six games and need to do a better job of finishing off opponents.

Doc Rivers didn’t mince words following the Boston Celtics’ second loss of the season to Atlanta, saying the Hawks were the superior team. The Celtics won’t have to wait long to prove their coach wrong. Three nights after that defeat, Boston seeks revenge against Atlanta at TD Garden on Monday, with the Hawks looking to bounce back from a lopsided defeat that followed their win over the Celtics. Rivers’ team swept a four-game series from the Hawks last season by an average of 5.5 points. Atlanta (23-13), though, has turned the tables on Boston (26-9) in 2009-10, holding the Celtics to 85.5 points in winning both meetings.

The Hawks shut down the Celtics again Friday at Philips Arena, limiting Boston to 40.8 shooting while getting double-figure scoring from six players in a 93-85 victory. Jamal Crawford scored a team-high 18 points and is the league’s second-leading bench scorer at 16.9 points per game. Atlanta has not measured up against Orlando, which blew out the Hawks for the second timethis season Saturday, 113-81. The loss was Atlanta’s worst since falling 121-87 to the Magic exactly one year earlier.

The Chicago Bulls have experienced their share of struggles this season, but it’s nothing compared with what the Detroit Pistons have endured over the past month. The Pistons will try to avoid matching their longest losing streak in 17 seasons Monday night by earning their first road win over the Bulls in nearly four years. During its up-and-down season, Chicago (15-20) has dealt with rumors of coach Vinny Del Negro’s imminent firing, but the Bulls have earned wins since that speculation began. Detroit, meanwhile, has dropped 12 in a row, its longest skid since 13 straight losses to end the 1993-94 season.

The Pistons (11-24) have had troubles staying healthy, and only four players have appeared in all 12 games during their skid. One of those four, leading scorer Rodney Stuckey, sat out the second half of Saturday night’s 104-94 loss to visiting Philadelphia because of a sore right knee. Stuckey, averaging a career-best 18.4 points, is a game-time decision on Monday.

The New York Knicks have consistently held opponents to less than 100 points over the past month, but defensive breakdowns cost them a win as their latest foe reached triple digits. For the Knicks to get back to their stingy ways, they will likely have to slow down Kevin Durant - something that few teams have donethis season. Durant’s 40-point performance lifted the Oklahoma City Thunder in their latest game, and he will look to lead his team to an eighth win in 10 games as they host the improving Knicks on Monday night.

Oklahoma City (20-16) is the only club that boasts one of the NBA’s top four scorers and does not average 100 points, but Durant made sure the Thunder hit that mark Saturday night. Durant - averaging 28.7 points - didn’t touch the ball on a critical final possession in a 97-92 loss to New Orleans on Wednesday, but he took over in the fourth quarter against struggling Indiana. With the Thunder clinging to a 93-92 lead with five minutes left, Durant scored 10 of his season high-tying 40 points down the stretch in a 108-102 win.

Despite the absence of Carmelo Anthony, the Denver Nuggets managed to end their longest skid of the season, although they suffered a heartbreaking road loss in their most recent game. The expected return of Anthony and a home game against the lowly Minnesota Timberwolves would seem to give the Nuggets a good chance to bounce back Monday night. The Timberwolves, though, are one of the few teams to win at the Pepsi Center this season, and they will try to snap a three-game road skid in the teams’ third meeting of 2009-10.

The Nuggets (23-14) dropped three in a row from Dec. 25-28 and lost Anthony to a right knee contusion suffered during the final loss in that string, 106-101 to Sacramento. Despite playing without one of the league’s top scorers, Denver stopped that losing streak and has managed to win three of five, averaging 106.4 points after scoring 97.7 during the slide. The Nuggets were denied a third straight victory Saturday night when Tyreke Evans hit a tiebreaking jumper with 0.7 seconds left in a 102-100 defeat to the Kings.

The Phoenix Suns have been frustrated by their inability to protect big leads recently. They’ve had little trouble holding on against the Milwaukee Bucks. Hoping to rebound from a rare poor performance at US Airways Center, the Suns seek their 22nd straight home win over the Bucks on Monday night. Phoenix (23-14) won its first 10 home games this season, averaging 116.9 points and shooting 51.7 percent, but has split its last eight contests there, including a 109-105 loss to Miami on Friday.

Phoenix jumped out to a 13-point advantage in the first half, but the Heat dominated the second quarter and took a 59-53 lead into the break. The Suns, who two nights earlier blew a 16-point lead against Houston before pulling out the victory, shot 43.4 percent - their second-worst shooting percentage at home this season. The Suns were also unable to protect a lead against Sacramento last Tuesday, allowing the Kings to tie the game after leading by as many as 20 points.

The last meeting between the Miami Heat and Utah Jazz turned into a defensive battle with both teams delivering one of their worst offensive performances of the season.
With the Heat coming off another offensive dud that prompted Dwyane Wade to criticize their lack of consistency, Miami might need another strong defensive outing to beat Utah again. The Heat look to bounce back with their fifth straight win over the Jazz on Monday night in Salt Lake City. Miami (18-17) continued its recent domination of Utah (20-17) on Dec. 23, winning for the 11th time in the teams’ last 12 meetings. Though their final matchup last season was a triple-overtime shootout during which they totaled 269 points, the teams weren’t nearly as productive in their first meeting this season with Miami taking an 80-70 home victory.

The Heat shot a season-low 36.0 percent while the Jazz connected on 37.5 percent of their shots, and the teams combined for 62 points in the first half. Wade was the only player to score more than 18 points, finishing with 29. Wade is averaging 31.6 points in his last five games, but Miami lost for the fifth time in seven games Sunday, falling 94-84 to the Los Angeles Clippers. The Heat shot 39.3 percent and trailed by 19 in the first half. Wade finished with 24 points and Michael Beasley had 20, but third-leading scorer Jermaine O’Neal was held to two points and Udonis Haslem , who scored in double digits the previous four games, managed only six.

Although a game against the Cleveland Cavaliers on the schedule can be intimidating, the Golden State Warriors might be catching LeBron James and company at a good time. Known for playing an up-tempo brand of basketball, the rested Warriors look to win three consecutive games for the first time this season Monday night when they host a Cavaliers team playing its second game in back-to-back nights.After a poor start to the season, Golden State (11-24) has been more competitive lately. The Warriors have won four of seven - including victories over Phoenix and Boston - after losing 21 of their first 28.

One of those early losses was a 114-108 setback in Cleveland on Nov. 17, as James finished with 31 points and a season high-tying 12 assists. That was the Warriors’ third straight loss to the Cavaliers and their sixth in the teams’ seven meetings since the 2006-07 season. Golden State has also lost its last three games against Cleveland at Oracle Arena. James made a 19-footer to barely beat the final buzzer in the Cavaliers’ 106-105 win Jan. 23, their last meeting there.

The Minnesota Wild would love to record a third straight victory and topple the defending Stanley Cup champions, but they’ll be hard-pressed to top their latest feat. The Wild try to build off the momentum of the biggest comeback victory in team history Monday night when they welcome in the Pittsburgh Penguins, who look to follow their five-game slide with a third win in four games. Minnesota (22-20-3) snapped a four-game losing streak with a 4-1 win over Calgary on Wednesday, but looked to be headed toward another loss as it trailed Chicago 5-1 entering the third period Saturday.

Instead of folding against the NHL points leader, the Wild rallied. Kim Johnsson’s goal with 13:16 to play sparked a four-goal comeback, completed with Guillaume Latendresse’s tally in the final two minutes. After a scoreless overtime and eight rounds of shootouts, Owen Nolan’s goal gave Minnesota a 6-5 win that completed the biggest comeback in franchise history. The last team to rally from a four-goal, third-period deficit was Philadelphia, which also trailed 5-1 in the third and won 6-5 in a shootout on Dec. 11, 2008.

The Calgary Flames have moved into first place in the Northwest Division, but they have yet to pick up any points against the Colorado Avalanche. The Flames look to avoid a sixth straight loss to the Avalanche when the teams meet at Pengrowth Saddledome on Monday night. Calgary (26-14-5) moved into sole possession of first place in the Northwest following a 3-2 shootout win over Vancouver on Saturday, and improved to 8-5-1 against its own division.

None of those wins, however, have come against Colorado, which is tied with Vancouver, one point behind the Flames. The Avalanche (25-15-6) are the only team in the division Calgary has been unable to pick up any points against. It also hasn’t beaten Minnesota, but did get one point in an overtime loss. All three games between the Avalanche and Flames have been decided by 3-2 scores.

As they struggle to score goals, the San Jose Sharks badly need better goalkeeping. Still, they may want to consider giving Evgeni Nabokov a break. Coming off their worst offensive game in nearly a month, the Pacific Division-leading Sharks try to end the Los Angeles Kings’ recent domination of the series Monday night at Staples Center. San Jose (28-10-7) scored two goals or fewer in each of its last three games, losing two. Though Patrick Marleau scored for the fourth straight contest, the Sharks fell 4-1 to Detroit on Saturday night - the first time San Jose was held to less than two goals since a 2-1 loss at Phoenix on Dec. 12.

Defense has also been a problem, with the Sharks allowing 10 goals in their last two defeats. Nabokov is having another outstanding season, but subpar play from the veteran contributed to the losses, as he gave up nine goals in those contests. Fatigue could be a factor, as Nabokov is fourth in the league with 2,317 minutes played. With San Jose facing a quick turnaround with a game at Phoenix on Tuesday night, the Sharks may decide to give their top goalie a breather.

The Vancouver Canucks have lost their share of first place in the Northwest Division, but they have no reason to believe they’re going to fall out of the race any time soon. After a tough division loss, the Canucks look to extend a nine-game point streak in a matchup with the slumping Nashville Predators on Monday night.Vancouver (27-16-2) has two defeats in its last nine games (7-0-2). It hasn’t lost in regulation since a 3-1 defeat against St. Louis on Dec. 20.

The Canucks, though, fell 3-2 to Calgary in a shootout Saturday night, dropping one point behind the Flames in the Northwest. Vancouver and Calgary entered that contest in a tie for first place. It was a tough game offensively for the Canucks, who scored 11 goals in their previous two games. They still had some bright spots, though, with Daniel Sedin and Mikael Samuelsson scoring in regulation.

The Ottawa Senators have one of the worst road records in the NHL, and entering a five-game trip with a slew of injuries, a struggling power play and goaltending woes will be tough to overcome. Visiting the league-worst Carolina Hurricanes could help them overcome those obstacles. The Senators aim to end a three-game overall slide Sunday when they face the Hurricanes. Ottawa (22-19-4) is 6-11-1 on the road, ranking only better than Carolina’s 3-14-4 mark. The Senators have dropped 11 of their last 14 away from home, and they didn’t look much better in a 3-0 loss to Florida at home Saturday.

Part of Ottawa’s struggles are due to a rash of injuries that include right wing Daniel Alfredsson, center Jason Spezza and left wing Milan Michalek. The three players have combined for 30 goals and 42 assists with Michalek leading the team with 16 goals. The Senators added more to the injured list Saturday. Defenseman Filip Kuba left early in the third period with an upper-body injury and right wing Jesse Winchester exited with what appears to be a right knee injury suffered in a collision with the Panthers’ Keith Ballard.

Tampa Bay made a stopover in Philadelphia on Saturday that resulted in a 4-1 loss. Martin St. Louis scored with 6:55 remaining to cut a two-goal deficit in half, but Blair Betts added a pair of insurance goals for the Flyers. While the Lightning now have to give up their Sunday off and return back up the New Jersey Turnpike, they find themselves with a nice cushion against the Devils and less than half of a regulation game remaining in which they must hold it.

This will be the biggest challenge the Eastern Conference leaders have faced this season -- a three-goal deficit and less than 30 minutes in which to make it up. But at least New Jersey has a bit of a positive momentum coming in, as the Devils went to Montreal on Saturday and defeated the Canadiens 2-1 in overtime.

Reaching the playoffs for the first time last season was a major step for the Columbus Blue Jackets. They don’t appear capable of a return trip in 2009-10, but winning consecutive games for the first time in nearly two months has coach Ken Hitchcock seeing some similarities. The Blue Jackets seek their third three-game winning streak Sunday night when they host the Dallas Stars. Columbus (17-20-9) posted a franchise-record 92 points last season, qualifying for the playoffs for the first time. Despite being swept in the opening round by Detroit, the Blue Jackets appeared to be showing promise in becoming a contender in the Western Conference.

The Blue Jackets have fallen further back in this season’s playoff race thanks to a 3-14-7 stretch that included a 3-1 loss at Dallas on Dec. 23. They’ve followed that by winning 4-2 at Edmonton on Thursday before beating Calgary 3-2 the following night to post consecutive wins for the first time since a three-game run from Nov. 13-19. Antoine Vermette has been a big part of last the two wins, getting two goals and two assists after posting three and five, respectively, over the previous 17 contests. The center has 13 goals, and his 35 points rank second on the team behind captain Rick Nash’s 41.

The Chicago Blackhawks haven’t been forced to deal with many humbling setbacks this season. At least they won’t have to wait long to try and bounce back from their most frustrating loss of the season. The NHL-leading Blackhawks look to get back on track while trying for a fifth consecutive home victory and second in eight days over the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday night. One of the NHL’s hottest teams, Chicago (31-10-4) appeared to be headed toward its sixth straight victory Saturday, but it blew a four-goal, third-period lead and lost 6-5 in a shootout at Minnesota.

The stunning collapse was one of the few times this season the Blackhawks showed a lack of composure and confidence on the ice. Chicago has scored at least five goals in five of six games, but it allowed more than three for the first time in that span Saturday. The Blackhawks have given up more than four goals only three times this season. Now, coach Joel Quenneville doesn’t have to wait long to see how his team reacts after losing a game it should have won.

For a team that’s had half of its losses come by at least 18 points, the Toronto Raptors’ turn from underachievers to winners of eight of nine certainly registers as an eye-opener. The Raptors can avenge the lone loss in that span Sunday as they try to avoid dropping a seventh straight game to the visiting Boston Celtics, who have Paul Pierce and Rajon Rondo back after beating Toronto short-handed earlier this month. The Raptors (19-18) hardly seemed interested in defending during an 11-17 start in which they allowed 108.6 points per game, and nine of those losses came by 18 points or more.

Since Dec. 18, though, Toronto has turned up its defense - allowing an average of 94.1 points - while operating an extremely efficient offense. The Raptors are shooting 50.4 percent and averaging 24.2 assists over their last nine games, both Eastern Conference bests. Coach Jay Triano’s club also is winning tight games. Following five-point victories over San Antonio and Orlando to begin the week, Toronto rallied from a 13-point deficit in the second half Friday and won 108-106 in Philadelphia behind 29 points from Chris Bosh.

While the Washington Wizards are desperately trying to regain control of their tumultuous season, the New Orleans Hornets seem to finally be hitting their stride after a poor start. The surging Hornets look to win their sixth straight Sunday when they visit the Wizards. After losing eight of its first 11 games and firing coach Byron Scott, New Orleans (18-16) has begun to play like the team that has reached the playoffs the last two seasons. A 103-99 victory over league-worst New Jersey on Friday was the Hornets’ season-high fifth in a row, but it didn’t come without some drama.

New Orleans led by 15 before the Nets rallied to take a 99-98 lead. Chris Paul, who finished with 11 points and 18 assists, completed a three-point play after being fouled on a layup with 7.6 seconds to play. Emeka Okafor has been critical during the winning streak, averaging 12.4 points and 11.8 rebounds while totaling eight blocked shots. He had 13 points and 13 rebounds against New Jersey.

For a team that often seems like second-class citizens in its own arena, the Los Angeles Clippers are certainly making Staples Center feel like home lately. The Clippers seek their first six-game home winning streak in more than three years Sunday afternoon against the Miami Heat, who began their longest road trip of the season in impressive fashion. Los Angeles (16-18) came home from a six-game trip having lost its last three in blowout fashion, but it’s gotten back on track in playing four of its last five in comfortable surroundings.

The Clippers beat Boston 92-90 behind a big game from Chris Kaman on Dec. 27, and they’ve won their last three by double digits. The latest was the most significant, as 25 points from Baron Davis and 21 from Kaman paved the way to a 102-91 win Wednesday over the defending champion Lakers, snapping a nine-game slide against their Staples Center co-tenants. A victory over the Heat (18-16) would give Los Angeles six straight at Staples Center for the first time since Nov. 2-18, 2006. Miami has lost six of its last eight road meetings with the Clippers.

After bouncing back from a slow start, the San Antonio Spurs have stumbled twice in the past week. A matchup with the woeful New Jersey Nets could help them get back to winning. The Spurs will try to earn their 14th straight victory over the Nets on Sunday night. After splitting its first 18 games, San Antonio got on track by winning 11 of 13. The Spurs (21-13), though, have since dropped two of three. They lost 91-86 at Toronto last Sunday as their rally from a 15-point, fourth-quarter deficit fell short. San Antonio rebounded for a 112-92 home win over Detroit on Wednesday and held a 10-point lead entering the final period against visiting Dallas on Friday night before the Mavericks scored 42 in the last 12 minutes to win 112-103.

Duncan has been the Spurs’ hottest shooter of late, making 57.5 percent of his attempts over the past five games while averaging 22.4 points. The perennial All-Star is shooting a career-best 55.4 percent and has averaged 28.7 points on 59.3 percent shooting in his past three matchups with the Nets. Duncan has scored 23.1 points per game in 22 career meetings, and New Jersey is one of three teams he’s averaged more than 23.0 against in his 13 seasons.

The Portland Trail Blazers haven’t been nearly as dominant at home this season as they were in 2008-09, but they did just win a visit from the team with the NBA’s best record. They haven’t been able to beat the Cleveland Cavaliers anywhere over the past two years. LeBron James has nearly averaged a triple-double in leading the Cavaliers to five consecutive victories over Portland, and they’ll look to make it three straight at the Rose Garden on Sunday night. The Trail Blazers (23-15) went 34-7 at home last season, but entered Friday night’s visit from the Los Angeles Lakers with six losses in their first 19 games in the Pacific Northwest.

Portland hadn’t had any problems with the Lakers at home over the past few years, and that held true again. Brandon Roy led the way with 32 points and Jerryd Bayless had 21 points in 21 minutes off the bench as the Blazers stretched their home winning streak over Los Angeles to nine straight with a 107-98 victory. Portland might have a hard time recording consecutive home wins over two of the NBA’s elite. The Cavaliers (28-10) have won five straight tight games over the Blazers since Jan. 30, 2008 - none by more than eight points - as James has averaged 30.8 points, 9.8 rebounds and 9.2 assists.

The Milwaukee Bucks are surging into a season-high six-game western road trip, but the first stop is a daunting matchup against the Los Angeles Lakers. While they have struggled on the Lakers’ home floor, the Bucks might face them in a vulnerable position Sunday if Pau Gasol is unavailable. Milwaukee is trying to match its longest winning streak of the season while dealing Los Angeles its worst skid in nearly two years.

The Bucks won eight of their first 11 this season, limiting opponents to 94.5 points per game. That defense faltered as they lost 15 of 19 and gave up an average of 101.3 points. Milwaukee (15-18) has tightened things back up to win three straight, allowing 88.7 points per game. Los Angeles (28-8), though, has scored at least 100 in 17 straight home games against the Bucks dating back to Nov. 24, 1991. The Lakers have won 15 of those meetings. Plus, they’ve averaged 113.0 points in winning their last four games at Staples Center and are an NBA-best 20-3 at home.

Despite their latest effort, the Colorado Avalanche have reason for confidence when playing a team from the Eastern Conference - especially when that opponent is the Carolina Hurricanes. The Avalanche look to bounce back from a rare interconference loss when they visit the league-worst Hurricanes on Friday night. Matt Hendricks and Chris Stewart each scored Wednesday, but Colorado (24-14-6) couldn’t hold an early lead and fell 3-2 at home to the New York Islanders for their second loss in three games.

Even after Wednesday’s setback, the Avalanche are 8-3-1 against the East, with five of those victories coming on the road. Colorado plays at Buffalo on Saturday. Colorado has been particularly successful against the Hurricanes. The Avalanche have won six of seven in the series and are 5-1-0 with a tie all-time at Carolina since the franchise relocated from Hartford prior to the 1997-98 season. Stastny has only one assist in his last four games overall - matching his worst output over any four-game stretch this season - but tallied two goals and an assist in Colorado’s 5-4 home win over Carolina on Oct. 23. The recently-named U.S. Olympian has five points in three career games against the Hurricanes.

The New Jersey Devils have never won three straight at home via shutout. The way Martin Brodeur is playing, they definitely have a chance at accomplishing this feat. With Brodeur expected to be in net, the Eastern Conference-leading Devils will try to win their seventh straight at home and 11th in a row over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Friday night. After making 32 saves in his previous home start - a 2-0 victory over Pittsburgh on Dec. 30 - Brodeur stopped 28 shots and extended his league record with his 106th career shutout in Tuesday’s 4-0 win over Dallas. Brodeur, who leads the NHL with 27 wins, has three shutouts in his last seven starts and is among the league leaders with five.

Brodeur, 3-0-0 with a 1.91 GAA in three starts versus the Lightning this season, has won six consecutive starts in this matchup. He anchors a defense that is among the best in the NHL, allowing 2.15 goals per game. New Jersey, which has outscored opponents 19-6 during its home winning streak, has won all three matchups with the Lightning this season by one goal. The last five games between these clubs have been decided by one goal, with six of the last eight finished after regulation.

The Buffalo Sabres snapped their trend of sluggish home starts in record-setting fashion. They also started slowly in four meetings with the Toronto Maple Leafs this season, but those games all ended up as Buffalo victories. The Sabres will try to extend their season-high five-game win streak Friday night with a 10th consecutive victory over the visiting Maple Leafs. Before the opener of a three-game homestand Wednesday night, Buffalo (27-11-4) had been outscored 4-1 and outshot 54-20 in the first period of its previous five at HSBC Arena. The Sabres, though, scored three times in the first 2:11 against Tampa Bay en route to a 5-3 victory.

Tyler Myers , Jochen Hecht and Clarke MacArthur gave the Sabres the fastest three-goal start in team history. They also helped Buffalo earn its 15th victory in 21 games and extend an eight-game home point streak (6-0-2). The Northeast Division leaders are looking for their first six-game win streak since Dec. 12-22, 2007, and their longest point streak at home since a nine-game run from Jan. 17-March 2, 2007. Buffalo could have a good chance to achieve that if it continues its offensive surge. The Sabres scored at least four goals in four of the past five games and at least four in three straight home wins.

The New York Islanders are putting together one of their best stretches of the season. Now that Kyle Okposo has found the net again, it could get even better. Okposo and the Islanders will aim for their sixth win in eight games Friday night when they pay a rare visit to the struggling Dallas Stars. New York (18-18-8) has won five of seven (5-1-1) and is in position to win three in a row for the first time since a season-high four-game run Oct. 28-Nov. 2. The Islanders are also 3-0-1 in their last four road games, with each decided by one goal.

They defeated Colorado 3-2 on Wednesday to open a three-game trip. Okposo netted the game-winner with 3:17 to play, scoring his seventh goal of the season, but just his second in his last 24 games. Despite his slump, Okposo is tied with left wing Matt Moulson and rookie center John Tavares for the team lead with 28 points. Gordon will likely opt to keep Dwayne Roloson in net, while Rick DiPietro acts as his backup. Roloson is 5-0-1 with a 2.06 goals-against average in his last six games, but is 1-4-0 with a tie and a 3.55 GAA in seven career starts at Dallas (18-14-11).

The Calgary Flames’ top line was a big part of the team’s season-best five-game winning streak, and its lack of production helped that run come to an end. As the Flames look to re-establish themselves offensively, a visit from the last-place Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday night might be just what they need. Calgary (25-13-5) saw its five-game winning streak snapped Wednesday with a 4-1 loss at Minnesota. The Flames’ top line of Jarome Iginla , Curtis Glencross and Daymond Langkow mustered five shots and no points against the Wild after combining for five goals and nine assists during the winning streak.

Calgary may have an ideal chance to rebound before Saturday’s visit to Vancouver, with which it shares the Northwest Division lead, as it hosts Central Division cellar-dwelling Columbus (16-20-9). The Flames have taken two of three from the Blue Jackets this season, including a 6-3 victory Oct. 20 to extend their winning streak over Columbus at Pengrowth Saddledome to four. Calgary is 12-3-2 all-time at home in this series.
