Baltimore Orioles vs Detroit Tigers Live Streaming

Detroit Tigers rookie Andy Oliver didn’t have much success on the road while trying to earn his first major league win, but he might have better luck in his home debut Monday against the majors’ worst team. As he searches for that milestone victory, Oliver will try to help the Tigers continue their recent success at Comerica Park in the opener of a three-game series with the Baltimore Orioles. In his debut June 25 against Atlanta, Oliver allowed two runs and five hits over six innings in a 3-1 defeat. He was then hurt by three unearned runs during Wednesday’s 5-1 loss to Minnesota. Oliver gave up five runs overall and eight hits over six innings while striking out six.

The left-hander will try to stay ahead this time in his first home game and help the Tigers to their 13th win in 15 games there. Detroit opened a nine-game homestand by winning its fifth straight series at Comerica. The Tigers, though, were denied a sweep of Seattle with Sunday’s 8-1 loss after going 1 for 15 with runners in scoring position. They could have better success against the Orioles, who are a major league-worst 9-31 on the road. Baltimore is also winless in 16 straight road series dating back to September and opened a 10-game trip by losing two of three to a short-handed Boston team. The Orioles avoided the sweep Sunday by limiting the Red Sox to three hits in a 6-1 win. Kevin Millwood will try to help his team to back-to-back road victories for only the second time this season. While he’s won consecutive decisions after losing his first eight, the veteran right-hander has mainly been helped by the 15 runs the Orioles have provided in his last three starts.

Chicago Cubs vs Arizona Diamondbacks Live Streaming

4:10 pm EDT Mon Jul 5, 2010

A seven-game homestand did nothing to prove the Chicago Cubs are capable of turning around their extremely disappointing season. The road hasn’t been any kinder lately either. The Cubs hope to avoid dropping 13 games below .500 for the first time in four years Monday when they open a seven-game trip against the Arizona Diamondbacks. While winning 83 games and finishing second in the NL Central last season failed to meet expectations, the Cubs will need to play much better in the second half to reach those marks in 2010. Chicago was blown out for the second time in three games Sunday, serving up seven homers to Cincinnati in a 14-3 loss. The Cubs, 12-0 losers to the Reds on Friday, lost five of seven on their homestand, and have dropped 10 of 11 series.

Rookie Tyler Colvin provided the lone bright spot for Piniella’s club, homering twice and driving in all three runs. Even with Colvin’s contributions, the Cubs still scored three runs or fewer for the seventh straight game. They are batting .205 during that span, going 7 for 50 with runners in scoring position. Chicago, which has lost nine of 14 on the road, hasn’t been 13 games under .500 since finishing the 2006 season 66-96. The Diamondbacks are in no position to offer the Cubs any sympathy. They are last in the NL West with 12 losses in 18 games. Arizona dropped its second straight after winning Kirk Gibson’s first game as interim manager, falling 3-1 to the Dodgers on Sunday. The Diamondbacks matched their season high by striking out 16 times, and with 761, are on pace to shatter the major league strikeout record.

San Francisco Giants vs Milwaukee Brewers Live Streaming

4:10 pm EDT Mon Jul 5, 2010

It was a long Independence Day for the San Francisco Giants and Milwaukee Brewers. The struggling Giants look to rebound from a 15-inning loss when they open a four-game series against the Brewers, coming off a tough defeat of their own, on Monday at Miller Park. San Francisco lost for the eighth time in nine games Sunday, falling 4-3 in 15 innings to Colorado, a game that lasted 5-hours, 24-minutes. The Giants scored three times in the eighth to tie the game, highlighted by Andres Torres’s inside-the-park home run, but managed little after that. Aubrey Huff led off the 13th with a triple, but San Francisco couldn’t get him home and lost for the third time in the four-game series. Missed opportunities were the story of the weekend for the Giants, who hit .222 with six strikeouts with runners in scoring position in three defeats to Colorado.

San Francisco has lost nine of 12 away from home, scoring three runs or fewer eight times. Although the Giants are struggling offensively, they may have an easier time scoring against the Brewers, who have allowed five or more runs in six of their last seven games. Milwaukee’s starting pitchers have a 5.15 ERA during that span. On Sunday, two errors by shortstop Alcides Escobar led to five unearned runs in a 7-1 loss to St. Louis, giving Milwaukee a split of the four-game series. The Brewers have alternated decisions the last 10 games. They also lost starter Yovani Gallardo, named Sunday to his first All-Star team, to a strained muscle in his left side in the third inning. The Brewers will try to rebound against Jonathan Sanchez, who the Giants hope can give them a quality start after using eight relievers Sunday.

Proud three-time reigning NL East champions, the Philadelphia Phillies may need to snap out of their slump this week if they are to mount a serious title defense. They’ll have the right pitcher on the mound Monday night to get them started. Roy Halladay will take the ball for Philadelphia to open a seven-game homestand against division leaders and a three-game set with the NL East rival Atlanta Braves.Plagued by injuries and offensive inconsistency, the Phillies have gone 16-23 since May 22 - a stretch which has turned a 4 1/2-game lead over the Braves into a five-game deficit. They concluded a 4-6 road trip by dropping three of four to woeful Pittsburgh, culminating in a blown three-run lead Sunday en route to an 8-5 defeat.

One of three Philadelphia All-Stars along with Utley and Ryan Howard, Halladay has three shutouts in his first season with the Phillies, one of which came at Atlanta’s expense. The right-hander threw a five-hitter while walking one and striking out seven in a 2-0 victory April 21 at Turner Field, improving to 2-0 with a 0.46 ERA in three career appearances against the Braves. He also threw seven scoreless innings at Atlanta on May 22, 2009, while with Toronto. However, Halladay is now trying to bounce back from a performance below his usual standards. He gave up four runs and a career-high 13 hits in eight innings of Wednesday’s 4-3 loss at Cincinnati. Probable Atlanta starter Derek Lowe faced Halladay twice earlier in their careers as AL East rivals when Lowe pitched for Boston. Halladay won both matchups.

Coming off a big road series win that moved them within one game of first place in the AL Central, the Chicago White Sox face another difficult assignment Monday night when they return home to open a four-game series against the Los Angeles Angels. Chicago was written off in the Central after it fell 9 1/2 games out of first on June 9, but it has won 18 of 23 to pull within a game of Minnesota and Detroit.Alexei Ramirez hit a two-run homer and Mark Buehrle pitched seven solid innings in a 5-3 victory Sunday night over Texas as the White Sox took two of three from the West leaders. A strong starting rotation has been the catalyst for Chicago as its starters are 14-5 with a 2.68 ERA in that 23-game span.

Gavin Floyd will try to continue Chicago’s run of solid outings from its starters. The right-hander is 1-1 with a 1.26 ERA in his last five starts. He gave up three runs in 6 2-3 innings of a 4-3 win over Kansas City on Tuesday for his first victory since defeating Florida on May 22. He had received six runs of support in his previous six starts. Floyd is 1-3 with a 4.14 ERA in five starts against the Angels. Floyd and the rest of Chicago’s staff will have to be careful pitching to Torii Hunter, who homered twice and tied a career high with seven RBIs in the Angels’ 11-0 rout of the Royals on Sunday. Hunter, named to the All-Star team for the seventh time, went 2 for 6 with a double, a homer and two RBIs in two games - both wins - against the White Sox in May. He’s batting .367 in his last nine games versus Chicago.

Boston Red Sox vs Tampa Bay Rays Live Streaming

7:10 pm EDT Mon Jul 5, 2010

The Tampa Bay Rays are convinced their recent swoon is finally behind them. They get a chance to validate that belief starting Monday with a key three-game home series against the Boston Red Sox. The Rays are one-half game behind the Red Sox for second place in the AL East, and both teams are within striking distance of the division-leading New York Yankees. Tampa Bay, which has struggled for more than a month after racing to a 32-12 start, enters this seven-game homestand on an upswing after taking three of four from Minnesota, capped by Sunday’s 7-4 victory.

Longoria, named to his third All-Star team Sunday, is 9 for 29 with seven RBIs during a modest six-game hitting streak. He is batting .349 at home this season and is 4 for 8 with a home run and a double lifetime against scheduled Red Sox starter Daisuke Matsuzaka. Matsuzaka gets his second crack at Matt Garza and the Rays in five days. The right-hander has struggled with his control since coming off the disabled list due to a strained forearm, walking eight in 11 innings over two starts. He lasted six innings versus Garza on Wednesday, giving up three runs and four hits with four walks in a 9-4 defeat. Matsuzaka is 2-5 with a 4.10 ERA in 10 starts against the Rays, but did get a victory in his most recent outing at Tampa Bay in 2008. Garza appears to be finding his groove as he tries to become Tampa Bay’s second 10-game winner along with David Price. He yielded three runs in seven-plus innings against the Red Sox for his fourth win in five starts.

Cincinnati Reds vs New York Mets Live Streaming

7:10 pm EDT Mon Jul 5, 2010

Little may have been expected this season from the Cincinnati Reds and New York Mets but they appear to be legitimate contenders heading into the final week before the All-Star break. The NL Central-leading Reds continue their longest road trip in nearly a decade Monday night in the start of a three-game set with the Mets. Cincinnati hasn’t been to the playoffs since 1995, finishing no higher than third after 2001. Meanwhile, New York ended last season 23 games behind NL champion Philadelphia, and a slow start this year led to speculation about manager Jerry Manuel’s job status. Cincinnati comes in after taking three of four from the floundering Cubs capped by a 14-3 rout Sunday. Drew Stubbs hit three of seven homers for the Reds, who kept their 1 1/2-game lead in the division over St. Louis.

Cincinnati is tied with Milwaukee for the NL lead with 102 homers. Also Sunday, New York took an early eight-run lead, and held off Washington 9-5 to finish with a split of its six-game road trip. Jason Bay had his first four-RBI game for the Mets, who also got a two-run homer from rookie Ike Davis, and two hits from All-Star David Wright. A big reason why the Mets are contenders is Mike Pelfrey, who looks to remain unbeaten at Citi Field. Over nine starts in Queens, Pelfrey is 6-0 with a 1.98 ERA. No Mets pitcher has opened 7-0 at home since David Cone’s 8-0 start in 1989. However, Pelfrey will try to bounce back from one of his poorest outings of 2010. Though he didn’t get a decision Wednesday in a 6-5 win over the Marlins in Puerto Rico, the right-hander allowed a season-high 12 hits while throwing 108 pitches in 4 2-3 innings. Pelfrey is 3-1 with a 4.65 ERA in five career starts against Cincinnati.

8:05 pm EDT Mon Jul 5, 2010

Struggling at the plate, the Texas Rangers didn’t begin their homestand how they wanted. Facing the depleted Cleveland Indians should give them a good opportunity to bounce back. After losing a series in Arlington for the first time in more than a month, the Rangers open a three-game set Monday against the Indians, who will be without another one of their top hitters. Texas began a 10-game homestand by dropping two of three to the Chicago White Sox over the weekend, suffering its first series loss in Arlington since losing two of three to the Chicago Cubs from May 21-23. The Rangers, who lead the AL West by 3 1/2 games, lost 5-3 on Sunday. They batted .202 as a team in the series while scoring three runs in each game. Josh Hamilton managed to have another good series individually, hitting two home runs including a two-run shot Sunday.

The Indians may be facing a bigger offensive challenge for the foreseeable future. Cleveland, which remains at the bottom of the AL Central despite winning six of its last eight, suffered a big loss over the weekend with news that Shin-Soo Choo could need surgery to repair a sprained right thumb. Choo, hitting .286 with team highs of 13 homers and 43 RBIs, was placed on the disabled list Sunday. Choo joins Grady Sizemore and Asdrubal Cabrera on the disabled list. Cleveland totaled six runs and batted .216 while losing two of three at home to the Athletics over the weekend. With the offense struggling, more pressure will fall Monday on Indians starter Aaron Laffey.

Florida Marlins vs Los Angeles Dodgers Live Streaming

9:10 pm EDT Mon Jul 5, 2010

The Los Angeles Dodgers and Florida Marlins both feature productive infielders who were snubbed for the All-Star game. Rafael Furcal and the Dodgers take on Dan Uggla and the Marlins on Monday night in the opener of a three-game set at Dodger Stadium. Furcal is 19 for 33 with 13 runs scored during an eight-game hitting streak, raising his average from .294 to .333. The shortstop has recovered nicely from a hamstring pull that caused him to miss a month, but was not chosen for the NL squad. Furcal went 5 for 14 as the Dodgers lost two of three to Florida from April 9-11. Uggla was also left off Charlie Manuel’s team in favor of Atlanta infielder Omar Infante, who has a higher average but worse power numbers. The Marlins second baseman has 16 homers to lead all NL middle infielders and 49 RBIs.

Florida manager Edwin Rodriguez said Uggla “deserved to be on the team, but Prado has had a great year and deserves it, too.” Uggla is 9 for 22 with eight RBIs in his last five games. He homered and drove in all three runs in Sunday’s 3-2 win at Atlanta. Uggla hasn’t fared well in his career at Dodger Stadium, hitting .196 with one homer and 14 strikeouts in 51 at-bats. This series marks a homecoming for struggling Florida rookie Mike Stanton, who is expected to return to the lineup after getting a day off Sunday. The Los Angeles native is hitting .207 through his first 21 games. The Dodgers are back home after capping a 5-1 trip with a 3-1 victory at Arizona on Sunday. Matt Kemp continued his resurgence with a go-ahead, two-run homer in the eighth inning.

The New York Yankees are back in Oakland for the first time since a memorable spat between Alex Rodriguez and Dallas Braden. Rodriguez is sure to be showered with boos upon his return to the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum on Monday night when the Yankees and Oakland Athletics open a three-game series. New York took two of three at Oakland from April 20-22, but Braden pitched the Athletics to a 4-2 win in the series finale. That game will be remembered for an incident in which Rodriguez jogged across the mound, resulting in an outburst from the Oakland starter. Rodriguez was taken aback by the pitcher’s reaction. Braden went on to throw a perfect game May 9 against Tampa Bay, but is winless in eight starts since and was placed on the disabled list Saturday due to soreness in his left elbow.

The Yankees are beginning a seven-game West Coast trip after reaching the season’s midpoint with 50 victories. New York beat Toronto 7-6 on Sunday on pinch-hitter Marcus Thames’ game-winning RBI single in the 10th inning. Catcher Jorge Posada left the game after spraining his left ring finger on a foul tip. Manager Joe Girardi said he would not catch Monday. The A’s will try for a fourth straight home win after a 4-2 road trip against last-place clubs Baltimore and Cleveland. Oakland starters went 4-0 with a 2.08 ERA on the trip, which concluded with Vin Mazzaro pitching 7 1-3 strong innings in Sunday’s 3-1 win over the Indians. Ben Sheets will try to continue the string of strong outings from Oakland starters. He gave up four runs over six innings Wednesday in a 9-6 loss to the Orioles. The right-hander fell to 1-1 with a 1.38 ERA in two career starts against New York on April 21, when he yielded two runs in six innings of a 3-1 loss.

Felix Hernandez probably won’t win 19 games like he did last season, but he’s beginning to recapture that form for the Seattle Mariners. He’ll try to win his fourth straight decision Monday night when the Mariners open a three-game home series against the Kansas City Royals. Hernandez turned in a breakout 2009, going 19-5 with a 2.49 ERA and finishing second to Kansas City’s Zack Greinke for the AL Cy Young Award. It took only 13 starts this season for Hernandez to match that loss total. The right-hander, though, has been overpowering in going 3-0 with a 1.26 ERA in his last four outings. He fell one out shy of a complete game in the first contest of that stretch before going the full nine innings in each of the next three.

Hernandez was brilliant Tuesday in a 7-0 win at the New York Yankees, striking out a season-high 11 in a two-hitter. He has 37 strikeouts over his last four starts, and 116 on the season - tied for third-most in the AL. Hernandez is 3-2 with a 2.90 ERA in six career starts against Kansas City, including a 3-1 road loss April 26 in which he allowed three runs over seven innings. Royals leading hitter David DeJesus is 7 for 20 against him. Greinke is scheduled to pitch Tuesday, and has never faced Hernandez. Kansas City will instead give the ball to Brian Bannister to open this series. Bannister has failed to reach the fifth inning in three of his last four outings, going 1-3 with a 9.53 ERA in that span. He lasted four innings and yielded four runs last Tuesday in a 4-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox. Manager Ned Yost defended the latest poor outing from his right-hander.
