After Monday, the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox do not meet again until the next-to-last weekend of the season. It could be too late for Boston to realistically catch New York by that point. The AL East-leading Yankees look to push the third-place Red Sox eight games behind them and hand Boston ace Jon Lester a fifth straight loss in the afternoon finale of this four-game series in the Bronx. Boston pulled within five games in the division with a 6-3 win in Friday’s series opener before New York bounced back with two wins to push its lead over Tampa Bay to 2 1/2 games. CC Sabathia pitched the Yankees to a 5-2 victory Saturday with eight strong innings and New York batted around in a five-run fifth in Sunday night’s 7-2 win.

New York is 7-4 against Boston, and these teams play their next series beginning Sept. 24 at Yankee Stadium. The Red Sox will try to salvage a split behind Lester, who has posted a 4.39 ERA in losing four straight starts for the first time in his career. He gave up four runs over five-plus innings in a 9-1 loss to Cleveland on Wednesday and exited due to a cramp in his left hamstring. The left-hander is 4-1 with a 4.01 ERA in 10 starts against the Yankees, going 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA in two this year. Derek Jeter is 10 for 30 against Lester while Nick Swisher, Mark Teixeira and Jorge Posada have all fared poorly. Lester has a 4.11 ERA during the day compared to 2.74 at night.

The White Sox hope the addition of Edwin Jackson will alleviate any concerns about their rotation as they push for the playoffs. It’s the Baltimore Orioles’ staff, though, that has placed Chicago’s hold on sole possession of first place in the AL Central in jeopardy. Jackson will make his second start for the White Sox as they close a four-game series against the Orioles on Monday night. Chicago needed to fill a major void in its rotation after losing Jake Peavy to season-ending shoulder injury last month. The White Sox think they’ve done so after acquiring Jackson from Arizona for Daniel Hudson and a prospect just before the trade deadline. Jackson made his Chicago debut Wednesday against one of his former teams. Facing Detroit, the right-hander allowed one run, nine hits, one walk and struck out six over seven innings of the 4-1 win.

The win also snapped a personal four-game losing streak in which Jackson had a 7.25 ERA. Monday’s start will be critical for Jackson as he tries to help his new club split a four-game series against the major league-worst Orioles. The White Sox are trying to build momentum before playing six of their next nine against Minnesota, which trails Chicago by a half-game. Jackson has won his last four starts against the Orioles, giving up two runs and five hits over 16 innings in the last two. However, Jackson may not get much support as Baltimore’s starting pitching has been hot during the series. The Orioles posted a 4-3 win Sunday, their fifth in six game under new manager Buck Showalter as Felix Pie homered and Jeremy Guthrie gave up one run in eight innings. Baltimore’s starters are 3-0 with a 1.94 ERA and each has gone six innings under Showalter.

Tampa Bay Rays vs Detroit Tigers Live Streaming

Struggles at the plate are a big reason why the Tampa Bay Rays are on a costly season-high losing streak. Having David Price take the mound against the Detroit Tigers should give them a good chance to halt it. Price looks to gain sole possession of the AL wins lead when the Rays open a three-game series at Detroit on Monday night. Since being alone atop the AL East after a 6-4 win over Minnesota on Tuesday, Tampa Bay has hit .149 in losing five in a row to fall behind New York in the division chase. Those offensive issues were obvious Sunday, as Tampa was one-hit by Toronto’s Brandon Morrow in a 1-0 loss, getting swept in a three-game set by a club well behind in the playoff race. The Rays have been no-hit twice this season.

Price will need some help to stop Tampa Bay’s losing streak. The All-Star left-hander didn’t get much Wednesday, allowing one run while striking out seven in seven innings of a 2-1, 13-inning loss to the Twins. The Rays managed five hits. The lack of production cost Price a chance to become the AL’s first 15-game winner. He’s tied with Minnesota’s Carl Pavano and New York’s CC Sabathia for the lead in victories, and his ERA is among the lowest in the AL. Price may be in good position to take over the wins lead as he faces Detroit. The Rays swept a four-game home set with the Tigers from July 26-29, with Price capping the series with a 4-2 win. He allowed two runs and struck out nine in 6 1-3 innings. He has gone 2-0 with a 1.65 ERA in four games - two starts - against Detroit. The Tigers are trying to win consecutive games for just the second time since a five-game winning streak July 5-10. They are 6-20 since and have fallen out of the Central race.

The Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals have been locked in a battle for NL Central supremacy for most of the season. A three-game series at Great American Ball Park may only tighten the race, especially with Chris Carpenter set to take the mound. The Cardinals ace looks to help his team close the gap on the division-leading Reds in the series opener Monday night. Cincinnati is two games up on St. Louis in a race in which the clubs have alternated atop the standings 17 times since May 15. Continued dominance from Carpenter could put the Cardinals on the way to making it 18 by the end of the series. The All-Star right-hander has won eight consecutive starts against the Reds with a 1.09 ERA, beating them three times this year.

Carpenter threw a gem in his latest meeting with Cincinnati on June 2, yielding one run and four hits in eight innings of a 4-1 victory. He enters this matchup red-hot, going 3-0 with a 1.64 ERA in his last five starts - all of which have resulted in St. Louis wins. Carpenter allowed two runs and four hits in 7 1-3 innings of an 8-4 victory over Houston on Wednesday. The Cardinals, who had the finale of their three-game set at Florida postponed because of rain, have won seven of 12 season meetings with the Reds. The clubs have split six matchups at Cincinnati. The Reds have won nine of 11, outscoring opponents 70-33 during that span. They extended their winning streak to four by beating Chicago 11-4 on Sunday. Manager Dusty Baker is looking forward to the matchup with the Cardinals.

Solid pitching has kept the Atlanta Braves in first place in the NL East. With a member of their rotation possibly facing season-ending surgery, they’ll turn to one of their top prospects to help keep them there. Mike Minor will make his major league debut when the Braves open a three-game series against the Houston Astros on Monday night. Atlanta took three of four from San Francisco over the weekend, winning 6-3 on Sunday to maintain a two-game lead over Philadelphia and complete a 5-2 homestand. Its next three games are on the road, where the club has dropped seven of 10. Ross hit a two-run homer and Omar Infante added a solo shot Sunday to back Derek Lowe, who gave up two runs in 5 1-3 innings before leaving with cramps in his right hamstring.

The Braves have posted a 1.73 ERA in their last eight games. Atlanta is fourth in the NL with a 3.50 ERA. A key contributor to that success was Kris Medlen, who was 6-2 with a 3.68 ERA before being placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right elbow. The Braves are waiting to see if he’ll need surgery. Although Medlen had replaced Kenshin Kawakami in the rotation, Atlanta chose to call up Minor instead of moving Kawakami back into a starter’s role. Minor, the seventh overall draft pick in 2009, was 4-1 with a 1.89 ERA in six Triple-A starts. Jones will try to help provide the left-hander with the kind of run support the Braves gave their pitchers during their last series with the Astros. Atlanta outscored Houston 21-4 in sweeping the three-game set April 30-May 2.

The Milwaukee Brewers have taken advantage of some struggling teams as they inch closer to .500. With the Arizona Diamondbacks headed to Miller Park for four games, that trend seems likely to continue. The Brewers have a good chance to stay hot Monday night as they seek an eighth consecutive victory over the Diamondbacks. Milwaukee won five straight July 22-26, notching four victories over last-place teams Washington and Pittsburgh, before enduring a five-game skid. The Brewers have bounced back to score 47 runs in winning five of six, posting a three-game sweep of Houston with Sunday’s 11-6 win. Macha’s club has been quite consistent recently against the Diamondbacks, however. Milwaukee has outscored Arizona 50-17 in winning the past seven meetings, led by Casey McGehee’s three homers and 12 RBIs in six of those.

McGehee has been on quite a tear over his last six games as well. The third baseman has 11 RBIs after a three-run homer and an RBI double Sunday. Monday’s series opener features the same pitching matchup as when the clubs last met May 9 in Phoenix. Chris Narveson tries to join teammate Yovani Gallardo as the second Brewer to reach double-digit wins. The left-hander gave up a run and six hits over 5 2-3 innings in a 4-3 win over the Cubs on Tuesday. Narveson is 1-0 with a 4.22 ERA in three games - two starts - against the Diamondbacks. His hit May 9 off Ian Kennedy drove in the eventual winning run in a 6-1 victory. Kennedy pitched well in the loss, surrendering two runs over seven innings in his lone career start against Milwaukee.

Kansas City Royals vs Los Angeles Angels Live Streaming

10:05 pm EDT Mon Aug 9, 2010

When the Los Angeles Angels dealt Sean O’Sullivan to the Kansas City Royals last month, they were within five games of first place and in need of an offensive spark. After 11 losses in 16 games, they have to be wondering if they gave up on the young right-hander too soon. O’Sullivan hasn’t won in three starts with Kansas City, and the 22-year-old figures to be highly motivated to beat his former club as the Royals visit the Angels to begin a three-game series Monday night. Los Angeles was within striking distance of first-place Texas when it visited the Rangers on July 22, the same day it struck a deal to acquire third baseman Alberto Callaspo from Kansas City for O’Sullivan.

Callaspo has hit .291 with the Angels - the team that originally signed him in 2001 - while giving them an option other than Maicer Izturis or the struggling Brandon Wood, but he’s only driven in five runs. Los Angeles is 5-11 since the trade and sits nine back of Texas after Sunday’s 9-4 loss in Detroit. O’Sullivan fell to 0-2 with a 6.06 ERA with the Royals after giving up four runs over 5 1-3 innings in a 4-3 loss at Oakland on Wednesday. Yet for a pitching staff that’s on its way to having one of the majors’ five-worst ERAs for a second straight season, Kansas City is happy to have another promising young arm. O’Sullivan’s mound opponent is Ervin Santana, whose injury in June 2009 led to him making his major league debut. Santana can only wish he missed his most recent start. The right-hander surrendered nine runs and 12 hits in 3 2-3 innings in a 9-7 loss at Baltimore on Wednesday.

If the Oakland Athletics hope to make a run at winning the AL West, they need to continue taking advantage of the worst team in the division. The Athletics look to extend their dominance of the Seattle Mariners when the division rivals open a three-game series at Safeco Field on Monday night. Oakland pulled within 7 1/2 games of Texas in the West after beating the Rangers 3-2 on Sunday. All-Star Trevor Cahill earned his 12th victory by yielding two unearned runs over eight innings. The Athletics have a major league-best 2.88 ERA since the All-Star break, and that’s close to the 2.89 ERA they have posted this year in winning six of nine against the Mariners. Oakland has done a good job of limiting All-Star Ichiro Suzuki to eight singles in 35 at-bats and three runs scored. Vin Mazzaro has yet to face Seattle this year, losing his only start against the Mariners as a rookie Aug. 24 by giving up three runs in five innings of a 3-1 road defeat.

The right-hander did not get a decision Tuesday in a 3-2 home loss to Kansas City after allowing two runs in six innings. Seattle second baseman Chone Figgins is 3 for 4 against Mazzaro and has been hitting well on this homestand. Figgins went 2 for 3 in a 3-2 win over the Royals on Sunday and is 12 for 23 over his last six games at Safeco. The Mariners received bad news after learning that shortstop Jack Wilson fractured a bone in his right hand in an accident at his home. They said Wilson slipped and fell in his bathroom, hitting his hand on the floor. The injury may be bad news for Oakland since Wilson is 2 for 23 against the A’s this year. Seattle starter Doug Fister has pitched well against Oakland, going 2-1 with a 1.50 ERA in four career starts. He’s given up one run over 15 innings in winning both outings against the Athletics at home.

A series against the Chicago Cubs may be what the stumbling San Francisco Giants need to get back on track, but they probably aren’t looking forward to facing Carlos Zambrano. Zambrano makes his first start in more than a month as the volatile right-hander leads the Cubs into a four-game road series against the Giants on Monday night. San Francisco has scored nine runs while dropping four of five and trails NL West-leading San Diego by two games while leading Philadelphia by one-half game for the wild card. The Giants lost three of four at Atlanta over the weekend, falling 6-3 on Sunday. The struggling offense could get some help by facing the lowly Cubs, who have lost 10 of 11 and were swept by Cincinnati over the weekend. Chicago has a 7.47 ERA over those 11 games, losing 11-4 on Sunday.

While his team isn’t in a playoff race, Zambrano is still facing a lot of pressure as he tries to redeem himself during what has been a disappointing season. Zambrano got into an altercation with Derrek Lee during a June 25 dugout meltdown and was placed on the restricted list while he underwent anger-management therapy. The right-hander has made three relief appearances since being activated, giving up two runs and six hits in 3 2-3 innings. His return to the rotation comes because Chicago is short-handed after Ted Lilly was traded and Carlos Silva was placed on the 15-day disabled list. Zambrano, the Cubs’ opening day starter who was demoted to the bullpen in April after struggling in his first four starts, told the team’s official website he is eager to return to form.
