On a team synonymous with winning, Andy Pettitte can reach an impressive milestone. The veteran left-hander seeks his 200th victory with the reigning World Series champion New York Yankees on Saturday afternoon when they continue their series against the Toronto Blue Jays. Aside from three seasons with Houston from 2004-06, Pettitte has played for New York since reaching the majors in 1995, recording 199 wins in his time there. A five-time World Series champion with the Yankees and a two-time 20-game winner in his career, he is also tied with Hall of Famer Whitey Ford - who spent his entire 18-year career with the Yankees - for 57th on the all-time list with 236 victories. Pettitte notched his latest win Monday by limiting Cleveland to one run in seven innings of an 11-2 rout, his second consecutive victory since his lone loss of 2010. He noted Ford’s influence.

Pettitte also has loved pitching in Toronto, winning his last four starts at Rogers Centre - three in 2009 - and compiling a 15-5 lifetime mark there. A victory would make Pettitte the 35th pitcher to win 200 games with one team and the third eight-game winner in the AL this season along with Tampa Bay’s David Price and Boston’s Clay Buchholz. Pettitte could use more support than A.J. Burnett got in New York’s 6-1 loss Friday to start this three-game set. Jose Bautista hit two homers, giving him a major league-leading 18, and Edwin Encarnacion added a solo shot as Toronto increased its MLB-leading count to 94. Ricky Romero hopes the Blue Jays can continue to provide that type of support as he tries to win his fourth straight start at home. The left-hander has thrown consecutive complete games at Rogers Centre, including a six-hitter Sunday to beat Baltimore 6-1.

Even against the Florida Marlins, the New York Mets continue to find ways to win at home. After snapping a six-game losing streak against their NL East rivals, the Mets look to win their seventh straight at Citi Field as they continue this three-game series Saturday. A 2-4 road trip ended New York’s momentum, but it quickly got back on track in the opener of a six-game homestand with a 4-3 win Friday night. The Mets had lost six straight to the Marlins, a skid that included two defeats at home. New York, though, has won 16 of 20 at Citi Field to improve to 20-9 there, leading the majors in wins at home. The Mets have a 1.67 ERA during their winning streak at Citi Field, and haven’t surrendered a home run in their last seven contests there. Set to come off the disabled list, Jonathon Niese will try to continue New York’s strong pitching run. Niese is expected to make his first start since suffering a strained right hamstring May 16 while fielding a bunt in the third inning of loss to the Marlins.

The left-hander underwent surgery to repair a tear in that same hamstring Aug. 6, and missed the final two months of last season. Niese has posted a 5.63 ERA in losing each of his two starts against the Marlins. Niese’s return far from solves New York’s injury problems. The Mets placed second baseman Luis Castillo on the 15-day DL on Friday due to a bruised right heel. Castillo is batting .241 with no homers and 14 RBIs. New York recalled 20-year-old Ruben Tejada from Triple-A Buffalo to take Castillo’s starting spot. Tejada made an immediate impact, delivering two hits and an RBI. Francoeur continued his hot hitting for New York, going 2 for 4. The right fielder is 16 for 34 during a 10-game hitting streak. The Mets now face Nate Robertson, who did not receive a decision Monday after allowing four runs and eight hits in 5 1-3 innings of a 13-5 win over Milwaukee.

Beating Milwaukee at home had been a problem for the St. Louis Cardinals of late. However, the way the Brewers are struggling, that may no longer be the case. After snapping a four-game home skid to the Brewers, the surging Cardinals look for a third straight victory as the NL Central foes continue a weekend series Saturday at Busch Stadium. Albert Pujols and Ryan Ludwick each drove in two runs while Adam Wainwright threw a two-hitter for his first career shutout in Friday’s 8-0 win. The victory was the sixth in eight games for the Cardinals, but only the fourth in 17 at home against Milwaukee. St. Louis could be headed for two more victories this weekend against the Brewers, who’ve lost five of six. Rickie Weeks and Cory Hart mustered the only hits as a Brewers lineup ranked near the top of the majors with 270 runs was blanked for the sixth time.

Despite Friday’s effort, a lack of offense hasn’t been the main reason for Milwaukee’s struggles in 2010. The Brewers’ 5.37 team ERA is among the worst in the majors. The Cardinals tagged Randy Wolf for five runs in 6 2-3 innings. Ludwick had two hits and is batting .389 with 11 RBIs in his last nine games. Pujols is 9 for 17 with seven RBIs in his last five games. He’s 2 for 4 with a homer against Milwaukee scheduled starter Chris Narveson, who looks to avoid a third straight loss. Narveson has a 2.25 ERA in seven relief appearances versus the Cardinals, but will make his first start against them in this contest. Narveson, 3-3 with a 5.45 ERA since entering the rotation April 28, pitched five scoreless innings before he allowed five runs and couldn’t make it out of the sixth in a 13-5 loss at Florida on Monday. He’ll be the second of three straight left-handers the Brewers will start in the series. Manny Parra is scheduled to go in Sunday’s finale.

James Shields believes he’s better than what his last performance would indicate, but may have a tough time proving it at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. Shields looks to help the Rays bounce back from another poor game on the mound at Texas as they face the Rangers on Saturday. The most recent start couldn’t have been much worse for Shields, who gave up a season-high seven runs and 11 hits Sunday in 5 1-3 innings of an 8-5 loss to Chicago. The right-hander had been 4-2 with a 2.45 ERA over his previous seven outings. Shields has been an otherwise steady pitcher for the AL East-leading Rays, but is 1-1 with a 5.79 ERA in two road starts against the Rangers. He’s not the only Tampa Bay pitcher who has struggled at Texas. The Rays lead the American League with a 3.28 ERA, but gave up 13 hits Friday in a 9-6 loss to open this three-game series. Tampa Bay has lost six of its last seven at Rangers Ballpark, and has posted a 10.10 ERA during its last six contests there.

Texas, meanwhile, has won 12 of its last 15 at home, averaging 6.1 runs. Winners of three of four overall, the Rangers had another strong game at the plate Friday as Vladimir Guerrero returned to the lineup and had a three-run double after missing two games because of a swollen left eye. Guerrero is hitting .415 with five homers and 12 RBIs in his last 14 games versus Tampa Bay. The eight-time All-Star leads Texas with 12 home runs, 47 RBIs and a .333 average. Texas also got a strong performance from rookie first baseman Justin Smoak, who had a homer and a career-high three hits. The 11th overall pick in the 2008 draft and the organization’s top hitting prospect, Smoak was batting .167 last week but an 8-for-17 stretch has pushed his average to .208. The Rangers may need another productive game from their lineup if starting pitcher Tommy Hunter is rusty in his season debut. Hunter is ready to rejoin the club after being slowed by a left oblique strain in spring training. The right-hander went 9-6 with a 4.10 ERA in 15 starts as a rookie last year, including a 1-0 record with a 3.48 ERA in two starts against the Rays.

Of all the reasons the surging Los Angeles Angels have climbed above .500 for the first time since April, Ervin Santana may be near the top of the list. The red-hot right-hander looks to win his fifth straight start as the visiting Angels try for their fourth straight victory Saturday afternoon against the Seattle Mariners. Santana hasn’t lost since May 9, when he allowed five runs in 6 2-3 innings of an 8-1 defeat at Safeco Field. Since then, Santana has gone 4-0 with a 1.86 ERA in four outings, striking out 28 in 29 innings. Kansas City manager Ned Yost called Santana’s slider “just short of devastating” after he held Kansas City to one run in seven innings of a 7-1 victory Monday. There isn’t much the Angels aren’t doing consistently as they recover from a surprisingly slow start. They’ve won three straight and eight of 10, continuing to score runs in bunches even after RBI leader Kendry Morales broke his leg celebrating a walk-off grand slam in a 5-1 home win over the Mariners last Saturday.

Los Angeles has scored seven or more runs four times in six games since Morales’ injury, with Hideki Matsui making perhaps the biggest impact. Matsui has raised his average from .229 to .265 with four consecutive multi-hit games. Matsui went 3 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs in Friday night’s 7-1 series-opening win, helping give the Angels a winning record for the first time since they were 12-11 on April 29. The Mariners had won three straight before Friday’s defeat, which dropped them to 2-5 against Los Angeles this season. In order to improve that record Saturday, they’ll have to overcome the absence of scheduled starter Doug Fister, who has been scratched due to tightness and fatigue in his shoulder. While Fister ranks third in the AL with a 2.45 ERA, replacement Ryan Rowland-Smith was dropped from the Mariners’ rotation last month following his woeful start. Rowland-Smith allowed 10 home runs in 39 innings as a starter. He surrendered two long balls and seven runs in 2 2-3 innings during his most recent start, an 8-4 loss at Oakland on May 17.

As outstanding as Jon Garland has been lately, he might have a hard time against the Philadelphia Phillies - even with their offense still slumping. Garland looks to defeat Philadelphia for the first time Saturday night when the NL West-leading San Diego Padres try to snap a six-game skid to the Phillies. A big reason for San Diego’s surprising start has been Garland, who is 6-0 with a 1.58 ERA in his last nine outings. It’s his longest win streak since he won eight straight decisions June 13-Aug. 4, 2006, with the Chicago White Sox. The right-hander, though, is 0-3 with an 8.02 ERA in four starts against the Phillies, going 0-2 with a 6.35 ERA in two last year with Arizona. Philadelphia third baseman Placido Polanco is 14 for 37 against him. The Padres improved to 8-1 in Garland’s last nine outings with a 3-2, 11-inning win over Washington on Sunday. He allowed two runs over seven innings - both on solo homers that ended his streak of eight straight starts without yielding one.

While San Diego entered this four-game set with the league’s best record after eight wins in 12 games, two-time defending NL champion Philadelphia had dropped nine of 11 mainly due to a struggling offense. The Phillies, though, halted a four-game losing streak with a 3-2 victory Friday as Roy Halladay struck out seven in seven innings. Shane Victorino homered and scored the go-ahead run on Jayson Werth’s two-out, bases-loaded walk in the fifth. Still, Philadelphia has gone 12 straight games without scoring more than three runs. The Phillies are hitting .197 in that span and had six hits Friday. There was better news from the Phillies bullpen as closer Brad Lidge tossed a perfect ninth inning for his second save, including strikeouts of Adrian Gonzalez and Chase Headley. Lidge made his second appearance since his second stint on the disabled list.

7:05 pm EDT Sat Jun 5, 2010

A lack of offense is the biggest reason the Cincinnati Reds are in danger of their first three-game losing streak in more than six weeks. A run-scoring outburst would be especially meaningful with Mike Leake on the mound. The Reds haven’t scored for the rookie in his last two starts, but they’ll try to help Leake improve to 5-0 as their series with the host Washington Nationals continues Saturday night. Cincinnati ranked second in the NL in runs per game during May - a big reason the club temporarily surged to the top of the Central. The Reds haven’t dropped three straight since a season-worst five-game skid from April 14-18, but they have lost four of five overall and been held to three runs over the last two. They had 12 hits but stranded 11 runners during Friday night’s 4-2 loss - their fourth straight against Washington. The Nationals took the lead with two unearned runs in the seventh inning after Drew Stubbs and Jonny Gomes collided in the outfield.

Leake hopes that the brief slump ends after getting no runs of support in his past two outings. He has allowed two earned runs over 19 1-3 innings in his last three starts, but the Reds lost them all, including Sunday’s 2-0, 10-inning defeat to Houston. The 22-year-old right-hander, who skipped the minors entirely after pitching for Arizona State last year, worked six innings to post his seventh consecutive quality start. He has a 1.79 ERA in that stretch. Leake faces another rookie, Luis Atilano, who also has found fast success in the majors. Atilano will be looking to win his third straight start. He gave up four runs - three earned - in 6 2-3 innings at Houston on Monday and got plenty of run support in a 14-4 victory.

After being swept in their last trip to Baltimore, the Boston Red Sox re-established their dominance of the Orioles with a lopsided win to open this weekend’s three-game series. With Jon Lester on the mound Saturday night, another Boston victory seems all but inevitable. Lester looks to improve to 11-0 in his career against Baltimore and 7-0 in his last nine starts as interim Orioles manager Juan Samuel tries again to snap his club’s nine-game losing streak. The Red Sox had won 62 of their previous 80 games against the Orioles before getting swept in a three-game set at Camden Yards from April 30-May 2. But Boston burst out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning Friday and cruised to an 11-0 victory, sparked by Clay Buchholz’s shutout. The game was a bleak debut for Samuel, the former third base coach who took over for Dave Trembley earlier in the day.

Trembley’s teams were never able to defeat Lester, who is 10-0 with a 2.22 ERA against the Orioles. The Red Sox have gone 12-1 in the left-hander’s 13 career starts versus Baltimore. Lester has pitched well against all opponents lately. After struggling in his first three starts of the season, he has gone 6-0 with a 1.43 ERA in his last eight outings, striking out 63 in 56 2-3 innings. He’s hoping to help the Red Sox extend their road winning streak to seven, something Boston hasn’t done since June 12-26, 2005. The Red Sox have won 13 of 17 overall, with plenty of help from a resurgent Victor Martinez. The catcher went 3 for 4 Friday and is batting .489 with four homers, nine doubles and 10 RBIs in his last 13 games. Martinez has helped Boston total 42 runs in its last five games and score more than six runs per game since May 17 - the highest average in the majors in that stretch.

Frustration got the best of Roy Oswalt in his last start. That hasn’t been an issue when he’s faced the Chicago Cubs of late. After being ejected from his last outing, the right-hander tries to continue his recent success against the struggling Cubs and help the Houston Astros to a season-high fifth straight victory Saturday night. Among the major league leaders in losses, Oswalt was tossed in the third inning of a 14-4 defeat to Washington on Monday. Oswalt, who gave up a season-high four runs in 2 1-3 innings, lost his cool after missing the strike zone on a pitch. While Oswalt said he was chastising himself by mumbling something, home plate umpire Bill Hohn thought it was directed at him, yelled back and eventually threw out Oswalt. The event added to Oswalt’s frustrating season. The 2.52 runs per game his teammates have given him is among the lowest averages in the majors, and he said he would agree to a trade if the Astros continue to struggle. Still, the veteran has taken a professional approach into each start.

Houston hasn’t struggled of late, winning four in a row after a 3-1 victory Friday while handing Chicago a season high-tying fourth consecutive loss. Oswalt is 13-12 with a 3.72 ERA in 30 starts against the Cubs, including 2-0 with a 1.15 ERA in his last three. He allowed five hits in seven scoreless innings of a 4-3 win at Chicago on April 17. Lance Berkman and Michael Bourn each had three hits Friday for the Astros, who scored their fewest runs in any of the last four games. Berkman has been a big reason for the team’s current surge, going 9 for 18 with eight RBIs in his last four games to raise his average from .227 to .260. He’s 12 for 30 in his last nine against the Cubs, who turn to Ryan Dempster to help end their skid. Dempster looks to bounce back from his worst outing of the season after he allowed six runs in 6 2-3 innings of a 9-1 loss to St. Louis on Sunday.

Jake Peavy and the Chicago White Sox likely expected his first attempt at earning career victory 100 to have come much earlier this season. Instead, the right-hander gets his first crack at achieving that milestone in his 12th start as the White Sox seek to even their weekend set with the visiting Cleveland Indians on Saturday night. In his first full season with Chicago, Peavy has been inconsistent, not throwing the ball nearly as well as he did most of his 7 1/2 years with San Diego. Peavy is 99-72 lifetime with a 3.41 ERA, and 7-4 with a 5.14 ERA in 14 appearances since the Padres dealt him to the White Sox at the trade deadline last season. His current ERA the highest of his career and second-highest on the team. Peavy allowed five runs and 10 hits in 5 1-3 innings Sunday, but avoided a third straight loss thanks to generous support and got credit for Chicago’s 8-5 win at Tampa Bay. He is 1-2 with a 5.59 ERA in five starts against the Indians, including 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA in three this season. In his last start against Cleveland on May 25, he allowed six runs in six innings in a 7-3 road loss and was outpitched by Mitch Talbot, also Saturday’s scheduled Indians starter, who yielded two runs in seven innings.

Given Talbot’s track record this season, if he beats Peavy again it won’t come as a shock. The rookie right-hander has won both of his starts against the White Sox, posting a 1.69 ERA in those games. He threw his first career complete game in a 6-2 home win over Chicago on April 16. Talbot will be looking to bounce back from a loss. He gave up three runs in 6 1-3 innings of an 11-2 defeat to the New York Yankees on Monday. Cleveland opened this series with a 10-1 rout Friday, improving to 7-3 against the White Sox in 2010. The Indians are 13-30 versus all other opponents. Jhonny Peralta had four hits with four RBIs and Justin Masterson earned his first win of the year on the same day the Indians learned star Grady Sizemore will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing microfracture surgery on his left knee.

The San Francisco Giants and Pittsburgh Pirates had to wait out a three-hour rain delay before starting the opener of their weekend series. The weather did nothing to slow down San Francisco’s Freddy Sanchez. After helping spark a Giants rally in his first game against his former club, Sanchez hopes to stay hot at the plate as the series continues Saturday night at PNC Park. San Francisco snapped a five-game road losing streak with a 6-4 win Friday night, rallying from a 4-0 deficit thanks in part to Sanchez. A three-time All-Star with the Pirates, Sanchez had three hits in his return to Pittsburgh, including a single that sparked the Giants’ four-run sixth inning. Juan Uribe followed with a two-run homer, and Aubrey Huff delivered another two-run shot later in the inning.

Sanchez, a career .313 hitter at PNC Park, is 14 for 27 with four RBIs and six runs scored over his last eight games. He has a .629 on-base percentage in that stretch, walking eight times. The Pirates have missed Sanchez lately, having averaged 2.3 runs and batted .223 while losing six of nine. They fell Friday despite scoring more than three runs for the first time since a 7-5 defeat at Cincinnati on May 24. Pittsburgh will try to rebound against San Francisco starter Todd Wellemeyer, who has posted a 2.84 ERA over his last two starts - both Giants wins at home. The right-hander is 3-1 with a 2.97 ERA in San Francisco, but 0-3 with a 9.35 ERA in four road starts. Wellemeyer is 4-2 with a 4.53 ERA in nine career starts against the Pirates, but 0-1 with a 6.35 ERA in four at PNC Park.Pirates catcher Ryan Doumit, who’s 2 for 19 over his last six games, is 7 for 15 with a home run and two doubles lifetime against Wellemeyer.

7:10 pm EDT Sat Jun 5, 2010

After one of their best offensive performances of the season, the Detroit Tigers were relatively quiet in their series opener against the Kansas City Royals. The Tigers’ chances to rebound could depend on which Luke Hochevar they see. The inconsistent Royals starter will try to avoid consecutive losses for the first time this season and help his club to its first series victory in five tries Saturday night. Detroit concluded a seven-game homestand with back-to-back wins over Cleveland, including a 12-6 victory Thursday. After collecting 17 hits in that game, the Tigers managed just eight in a 7-3 loss to the Royals on Friday night. Losers of five of six on the road, Detroit will try to bounce back against Hochevar, who is 2-2 with a 5.53 ERA in five career starts against the Tigers. He’s given up no runs in two of those games and at least five in each of the others. Hochevar kept the Tigers off the board for 7 2-3 innings in his season debut at home April 7. Five days later, he allowed five runs over five innings in Detroit. That up-and-down pattern has continued throughout this season for the right-hander, who’s given up five or more runs in five of his 11 starts, including Monday’s 7-1 loss to Los Angeles.

After posting a 2.65 ERA while winning back-to-back starts, Hochevar gave up five runs over seven innings against the Angels. He allowed a pair of home runs after giving up only two homers over his previous 60 innings. While the Tigers were kept off the scoreboard for much of Friday’s game, the Royals had their best offensive performance in a week while winning for the second time in seven games. Jason Kendall had three of the team’s 13 hits and drove in a season-high three runs. The Royals could have a more difficult time Saturday against Justin Verlander, who is 5-2 with a 1.72 ERA in nine career starts at Kauffman Stadium. The right-hander had allowed two runs or fewer in each of the first eight before giving up four over five innings in his season debut April 5. Verlander is 9-2 with a 2.58 ERA in 15 overall outings against the Royals, but he’s dropped back-to-back starts following a four-game win streak.

If a walk-off win to end a lengthy losing streak isn’t enough to bring some excitement to the Arizona Diamondbacks, they are hoping the addition of Dontrelle Willis will. Willis makes his Diamondbacks debut Saturday night against the Colorado Rockies at Chase Field. Arizona ended its 10-game losing streak Friday by scoring twice in the bottom of the ninth for a 7-6 victory. The Diamondbacks’ previous four losses had all ended with opponents scoring in their final at-bat before Ryan Roberts’ pinch-hit single scored Chris Young with the winning run, allowing Arizona to celebrate at home plate for a change. Arizona came to life after being held scoreless for 31 innings. Justin Upton snapped that drought with a two-run homer in the first inning and the Diamondbacks finished with 12 hits - their highest total since they had 14 on May 21. The Diamondbacks traded for Willis on Tuesday, two days after he was designated for assignment by Detroit. The former NL Rookie of the Year, All-Star and 22-game winner was 1-2 with a 4.98 ERA in eight starts and one relief appearance with the Tigers.

Arizona also is excited about the fire the 28-year-old left-hander brings to the plate. Willis hit .286 in 2007 - his last full season in the NL with Florida. Starting Willis isn’t exactly a gamble for a club that is ranked last in the majors with a 5.59 ERA. The Diamondbacks have an 8.58 ERA in losing four of seven to Colorado. The Rockies, though, had five hits Friday and struck out a season-high 14 times. Willis has retired Carlos Gonzalez both times he’s faced him, but the dynamic Rockies leadoff hitter homered for the fifth time against the Diamondbacks on Friday and is 12 for 24 with 12 RBIs against them. Rockies rookie Jhoulys Chacin takes the mound with a 1-3 record and a 6.14 ERA in his last four outings, but the win came over Arizona on May 25 as he gave up two runs over six innings in a 3-2 victory. The right-hander made his season debut against the Diamondbacks on April 27 with an inning of scoreless relief in a 12-1 rout. Chacin yielded four runs over 5 1-3 innings Sunday in a 4-3 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Minnesota Twins may still be far from ending their problems at the plate on the road, especially now that they have to contend with Trevor Cahill. After ending a troubling road skid, the Twins could have a tough time building momentum as they face the Oakland Athletics’ emerging right-hander Saturday night. Desperate for offensive production, Minnesota got a single from Delmon Young in the top of the 11th inning to drive in the winning run in a 5-4 win over Oakland on Friday night. The AL Central-leading Twins had lost three straight, scoring one run in each contest. Minnesota entered this three-game series with six losses in its last seven games away from Target Field. The Twins were held to two runs or fewer in each of the defeats. Young continued his hot hitting at Oakland, delivering two hits. The left fielder is 13 for 35 with eight RBIs in his last nine road games versus the A’s. Justin Morneau also had a strong performance for Minnesota, hitting a home run and driving in two runs. It was the 13th homer of the season for Morneau, who has a seven-game hitting streak and leads the majors with a .372 average. Morneau has also matched Chuck Knoblauch for eighth in franchise history with 210 doubles.

Morneau is 3 for 5 with a homer against Cahill, who is looking to win his fourth straight start. The 22-year-old Cahill has posted a 1.42 ERA during his winning streak, and he’s 2-0 with a 0.77 ERA in two outings at home. He gave up one run in 6 1-3 innings of a 4-1 victory over Detroit on Monday. Cahill has faced the Twins twice, going 1-0 with a 2.57 ERA. Minnesota will give the ball to Francisco Liriano, who has regained his form as one of the club’s top starters. Liriano won his last outing, giving up three runs and striking out seven in six innings of a 5-4 victory over Seattle on Monday night. The left-hander went 0-3 with a 5.70 ERA over his previous four starts. He’s 1-2 with a 5.92 ERA in six starts versus the Athletics, who have been struggling. Oakland has lost four of six, dropping one game behind first-place Texas in the AL West. The A’s had won three straight and seven of nine at the Coliseum before Friday’s series opener.

Having overcome their slow start, the two-time reigning NL West champion Los Angeles Dodgers have the division lead in their sights. The Dodgers have to like their chances to reach that plateau with the red-hot Chad Billingsley on the mound. The Atlanta Braves, however, will counter with a resurgent Tommy Hanson as they try to bounce back from the end of their lengthy winning streak. While Billingsley will attempt to earn his fifth straight win, Hanson will try to prevail in his third consecutive start as the Dodgers and Braves continue their four-game series at Chavez Ravine on Saturday night. Los Angeles entered this season attempting to earn three consecutive playoff berths for the first time in its storied history but dropped 14 of its first 22 games. The Dodgers, who trailed San Diego by six games April 29, caught the Padres on May 21 but couldn’t overtake them. Winning four of five, including a 5-4 victory over the Braves in Friday’s series opener, has pulled Los Angeles back within one-half game of San Diego.

After the Dodgers blew an early four-run lead, James Loney put them back ahead to stay with an RBI single in the seventh inning to snap Atlanta’s nine-game win streak. The victory was the Dodgers’ sixth in a row by one run. Billingsley had won four consecutive starts with a 1.80 ERA entering Monday’s outing against Arizona. He allowed all four of his runs to the Diamondbacks on three homers in the first two innings, but settled down to last eight innings and strike out a season-high 11 without a walk. Though he didn’t get the decision, he kept Los Angeles in position to win, which it eventually did on a game-ending balk. After dropping his first two career starts against the Braves in 2008, Billingsley was 1-0 with a 0.82 ERA in two matchups last season. To earn another victory, he’ll have to outduel Hanson. Since getting tagged for eight runs in 1 2-3 innings against Cincinnati on May 20, Atlanta’s right-hander has yielded three total runs while winning his last two outings.
