A poor start and an early deficit was too much for the Tampa Bay Lightning to overcome, and their longest winning streak in over two years ended as a result. Facing the last-place New York Islanders gives them a good chance to start a new one. The Lightning look to complete a sweep of their season series with the struggling Islanders on Saturday afternoon when the teams meet at Nassau Coliseum. Tampa Bay gave up five straight goals in the first 24:53 Thursday and the team’s rally fell short in a 5-4 loss to visiting Boston. The defeat halted the Lightning’s four-gamewinning streak, during which they outscored opponents 12-5 - including a 5-2 home win over the Islanders on Feb. 4.

The Lightning have moved into a tie with the Bruins for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference by going 7-2-1 in their last 10 games. Tampa Bay has outscored the Islanders 13-4 in winning all three season meetings, including a 4-2 win at Nassau Coliseum on Dec. 21. They last swept theseason series when they accomplished the feat in consecutive seasons from 2005-07. St. Louis has played a key role in those victories with one goal and five assists, while Steven Stamkos has scored three goals and set up two others.

A game in Buffalo has usually not ended well for the San Jose Sharks. But the way the Western Conference-leading Sharks are surging and the Sabres are sliding, there could be a much different result at HSBC Arena on Saturday night. Playing its final game before the Olympic break, San Jose will try to win for the fifth time on its six-game trip. The Sharks, though, are 1-11-1 all-time in Buffalo. In the teams’ last meeting at HSBC Arena exactly a year ago, San Jose lost 6-5 in a shootout after Jason Pominville scored the game-tying goal past Evgeni Nabokov with four seconds remaining in regulation.

Nabokov, though, arrives in Buffalo for this season’s second matchup with the Sabres on a NHL-record 11-game road winning streak. Nabokov, who has a 1.97 GAA during this stretch, made a career-high 50 saves in a 3-2 victory at Detroit on Thursday when the Sharks won for the first time in four matchups with the defending Western Conference champion Red Wings this season. The Sabres likely feel the same way as they enter their final contest before the Olympic break on a six-game slide.

The Philadelphia Flyers and Montreal Canadiens continue to jockey for the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference. The winner of their next contest will get to hold that spot for at least two weeks. In the teams’ final game before the Olympic break, the Flyers look to sweep a crucial home-and-home series from the Canadiens on Saturday night in Montreal. Philadelphia opened the series with a 4-2 win Friday, jumping ahead of Montreal with 23 games left. The Canadiens have 20 games remaining.

This is the teams’ final game until March 2, when Montreal visits Boston and Philadelphia travels to Tampa Bay. The Flyers, winners of three straight, are trying to avoid a letdown. After being held to a total of one goal in losses at Edmonton and Minnesota, Philadelphia came back from two-goal deficits in consecutive games against New Jersey and Canadian Olympic goaltender Martin Brodeur. Then, the Flyers held a 3-0 lead after two periods against the Canadiens. The Flyers are coming off their first home win against the Canadiens since March 6, 2006.

The New Jersey Devils haven’t won back-to-back games in more than a month, but after Ilya Kovalchuk’s first game-winning goal they’re hopeful they can end that drought heading into the Olympic break. The Carolina Hurricanes’ days as a pushover, however, appear to be over. Eight wins in 10 games have the Hurricanes hoping a late playoff push is possible, and they’ll look to win a season-high fifth straight Saturday night when they welcome the Atlantic Division-leading Devils to Raleigh. Not much separated New Jersey and Carolina during their physical first-round playoff series last spring, but just when the Devils seemed primed to advance, the Hurricanes scored two late Game 7 goals against four-time Vezina Trophy winner Martin Brodeur to escape with a 4-3 win.

While New Jersey is again atop its division, Carolina has spent much of this season as the Eastern Conference’s worst team. Lately, though, the Devils have stumbled and the Hurricanes have looked nothing like a cellar dweller. Carolina won four in a row to close January, and followed two losses with four more victories, the latest 4-3 in overtime against Buffalo on Thursday. Jussi Jokinen and new captain Eric Staal have led the way offensively during the last 10 games, but despite a surge that’s pulled the Hurricanes within 10 points of the eighth playoff spot, general manager Jim Rutherford seems to be building toward the future.

The Boston Bruins can certainly relate to the struggles the Florida Panthers are experiencing. They can also prove things can turnaround in a hurry. With their longest losing streak in 85 years suddenly feeling like a distant memory, the Bruins look to win their fourth straight Saturday night when they visit a Florida team trying to avoid losing its sixth in a row in each team’s final game before the Olympic break. Boston is in the mix for one of the final playoff spots inthe Eastern Conference, somewhat surprising considering it ended a 10-game skid - the team’s longest since a franchise-worst 11-game losing streak, set Dec. 3, 1924-Jan. 5, 1925 - with Sunday’s 3-0 win at Montreal.

The Bruins followed up that victory with Tuesday’s 3-2 shootout win over Buffalo and beat Tampa Bay 5-4 on Thursday. Michael Ryder and Milan Lucic each scored twice Thursday forthe Bruins , who nearly blew a five-goal lead. Boston scored four first-period goals and went up 5-0 on Lucic’s goal 4:53 into the second period before the Lightning came charging back. Despite some defensive breakdowns against Tampa Bay, Boston’s offense showed signs of getting back on track. The Bruins scored more than three goals in a game for the first time in 17 contests and have 11 goals during their winning streak.

The Ottawa Senators’ outstanding run has moved them atop the Northeast Division. The Detroit Red Wings’ chances of claiming a ninth straight Central Division title are fading fast. Coming off a win over the Eastern Conference’s best team, the Senators look to continue their superb play by beating the reigning Western champions Saturday night when they visit the sputtering Red Wings. Ottawa put together a franchise-record 11-game winning streak before falling 5-0 at Toronto last Saturday. The Senators responded with a pair of one-goal victories, including Thursday’s 6-5 win over East-leading Washington.

The Senators have surged to the top of the Northeast, one point ahead of second-place Buffalo, and it appears they have a good chance to be there during the two-week Olympic break starting Monday. After facing the struggling Red Wings, Ottawa visits the last-place New York Islanders on Sunday. Jason Spezza has been a big reason for the Senators’ recent success, accumulating nine goals and four assists in nine games after missing 20 with a knee injury.

The Phoenix Coyotes began the season with doubts about the future of their franchise, but they’ll head into the two-week Olympic break all but certain about their chances of returning to the playoffs. It has been more than a month since the Coyotes last dropped back-to-back games, a fate they’ll hope to avoid as they host the Dallas Stars on Saturday night in each team’s final game before the break. Bankruptcy was the reason the Coyotes were making headlines before the season, but Phoenix has since turned heads for a more positive reason, already matching its point total from last season as it tries to reach the playoffs for the first time since 2002.

The Coyotes have solidified their hold on fourth place in the Western Conference by going 11-4-0 after losing three straight from Jan. 7-12. They’re 8-2-0 in their last 10 despite playing seven of those games on the road, a stretch they finished with a 2-1 loss at Colorado on Friday night. Phoenix outshot the Avalanche 24-9 in the final two periods, but went 0 for 5 on the power play in that stretch and couldn’t net the go-ahead goal. The team has one power-play goal in 30 chances in its last eight games.

For almost a month, the Washington Capitals couldn’t lose. In the week before the NHL’s Olympic break, the Eastern Conference’s top team can’t find a way to win. It might not get easier Saturday night when the Capitals look to avoid a third straight loss while trying to beat the Blues in St. Louis for the first time in over 13 years. The hottest team in the league over the past month, Washington won a team-record 14 straight games before a pair of 6-5 losses, at Montreal in overtime Wednesday, and in Ottawa a night later.

Despite the Capitals’ recent skid, they’re still tied with San Jose for the most points in the NHL with only this contest left before the break. However, that doesn’t seem to be enough to satisfy coach Bruce Boudreau, especially after his team gave up three first-period goals, then took the lead in the second period before allowing three straight Ottawa goals Thursday. The Capitals’ record in St. Louis has been awful in recent years.

Before heading into this weekend, the Chicago Blackhawks swung a deal that they hope will strengthen their hopes of winning a Stanley Cup title. The club’s present focus, though, is winning their final two games before the Olympic break. Chicago will play the first of those Saturday night against the visiting Atlanta Thrashers, who are already seeing dividends from one of their recent trades. The Blackhawks on Friday acquired defenseman Kim Johnsson and prospect Nick Leddy from Minnesota for defenseman Cam Barker. Chicago general manager Stan Bowman pointed to the 33-year-old Johnsson’s experience as one reason for making the move.

Now in his 10th NHL season, Johnsson has six goals in 52 games with three coming on the power play. Bowman hopes that presence will pay off as Chicago works toward clinching its first division title since 1992-93. With Johnsson expected to be in uniform, the Blackhawks will try to add to a 14-point Central Division lead over Nashville and reach 40 wins for the third straight season. Chicago will play at Columbus on Sunday before the Olympic break. Antti Niemi is expected to make his third straight start Saturday.

With plenty of home games awaiting them after the Olympic break, the Anaheim Ducks are looking to finish strong on the road before that two-week hiatus begins. The surging Ducks go for their fifth straight win over the team they’re currently chasing for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference as they meet the Calgary Flames on Saturday night. Anaheim makes its first visit to Calgary this season following its franchise-record 11th straight home win, 3-2 over Edmonton on Wednesday. The Ducks also visit Edmonton on Sunday before the Olympic break, after which they play eight of their first nine games at the Honda Center.

Anaheim is within two points of the eighth-place Flames thanks greatly to Jonas Hiller, who has allowed no more than two goals in six of his past seven starts and made a combined 72 saves in the last two wins. Expected to make his 100th career start Saturday and first in Calgary, Hiller has started all but one game during the Ducks’ 13-5-0 run since Jan. 3 while posting a 2.34 goals-against average.

After both teams finished last season as non-factors in the Western Conference, the Los Angeles Kings and Colorado Avalanche turned to each other to make a trade. Less than eight months after Ryan Smyth and Kyle Quincey switched places as part of the swap, both clubs have liked the results. Both players have helped their new teams return to contention, and each will face his former teammates for the first time Saturday night in Los Angeles as the Kings and Avs try to head into the Olympic break on a high note.

Colorado closed the 2008-09 season last in the West, while the Kings missed the playoffs for the sixth consecutive season. With each team trying to retool its roster, the Avs dealt Smyth to Los Angeles on July 3 in exchange for Quincey, Tom Preissing and a draft pick. Smyth, who tied for Colorado’s team lead with 59 points last season, has provided 38 points along with a veteran presence for the young Kings, who put themselves on strong footing in the postseason chase by winning nine straight for the first time in franchise history from Jan. 21-Feb. 6.
