The New York Rangers won their last contest with two key contributors out for most of that game. They might face the same challenge on the final day before the Olympic break. The Rangers could be without star Marian Gaborik and top scoring defenseman Michael Del Zotto as they try for a fourth consecutive home victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Sunday. With the NHL’s two-week hiatus to begin Monday, New York would like to go into the break on a positive note as it tries to move into playoff position in the Eastern Conference.

The Rangers got the weekend off to a good start with a 3-2 overtime win at Pittsburgh on Friday. New York won despite Del Zotto leaving with an early abdominal laceration and leading scorer Gaborik limited to six shifts before sitting with a cut on his right thigh that forced him to miss a 2-1 loss to Nashville on Wednesday. Regardless if Gaborik and Del Zotto play, recently acquired forward Olli Jokinen needs to continue to play well. Jokinen, who scored the winner Friday, has two goals with three assists in five games since being traded from Calgary earlier this month.

With one game remaining before he’ll join his Olympic teammates in Vancouver, Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby wants to continue his scoring surge. Facing the Nashville Predators could give him that opportunity. Crosby goes for his first career goal in this matchup Sunday at Mellon Arena where the Penguins will face the Predators for the only time this season. Crosby, an alternate captain for Team Canada, set a career high with his 40th and 41st goals as Pittsburgh had its three-game home winning streak snapped Friday, 3-2 in overtime to theNew York Rangers. Crosby’s previous best was 39 goals set during his 2005-06 rookie season.

The Penguins center has no goals in three career games versus Nashville, but that could change Sunday with the way the Predators have struggled in their defensive zone. Since allowing 2.0 goals per game during a 7-2-0 stretch Dec. 29-Jan. 15, Nashville is giving up an average of 3.0 goals during its 3-7-2 slide. The Predators lost 5-2 at New Jersey on Friday, their most goals allowed in 21 games. Improved goaltending would help. Dan Ellis has allowed nine goals in his last three starts while Pekka Rinne has given up three or more goals in nine of his last 11. In the teams’ last meeting, Ellis was pulled after giving up two goals on seven shots before Rinne made 17 saves in a 5-3victory over the visiting Penguins on Jan. 8, 2009.

After Sunday’s game, the Vancouver Canucks finally get to go home. While many of them figure to get some much needed rest, Roberto Luongo and six teammates will be challenging for Olympic gold. The Canucks end the first leg of their lengthy stretch of road games looking to win their third straight as they take on the Minnesota Wild. The NHL will take a break from action for the next two weeks while some of the league’s best play for their home countries in Vancouver. For everyone but the seven Canucks who will be playing in the Games, the time off gives the team a break from its run of 14 consecutive games on the road while the Olympics have taken over GM Place.

The Canucks, battling Colorado for the Northwest Division lead, opened this stretch with a win - their seventh straight overall - but lost three of the next four. They have bounced back to win the last two, including a 4-3victory over Columbus on Friday. Sami Salo’s power-play goal tied the game 4:31 into the third period, and Mikael Samuelsson scored the winner with 12:04 to play on a deflected popup that went over Blue Jackets goaltender Steve Mason’s head. Backup Andrew Raycroft held off a late flurry by Columbus, which outshot the Canucks 19-9 in the final 20 minutes.

The Chicago Blackhawks’ newest addition made an immediate impact in their latest win. The Columbus Blue Jackets have also seemed to benefit from a recent move. The Blackhawks will try to head into the Olympic break with their fourth consecutivevictory Sunday against the host Blue Jackets, who have won three of four under interim coach Claude Noel. The Blackhawks acquired Kim Johnsson from Minnesota on Friday, and the veteran defenseman scored in his debut the next evening, a 5-4 shootout win over visiting Atlanta.

His marker helped Chicago take a 3-1 lead after one period, but the Blackhawks allowed three second-period tallies before Dave Bolland evened the score early in the third. Jonathan Toews recorded the only shootout goal to push the Blackhawks’ Central Division lead to 16 points over Nashville. Chicago will now try to improve to 4-0 against the Blue Jackets this season. Among those wins were a home-and-home sweep Jan. 14-16. Those contests were part of a 6-17-7 slump for Columbus, which split its next eight games before firing coach Ken Hitchcock on Feb. 3.

One month before Sunday’s matchup, the Ottawa Senators and New York Islanders were even in the standings, and it appeared the young Islanders were the team on the rise.
But Ottawa has only two losses since that point, and it will look to bounce back from one of them and head into the Olympic break atop the Northeast Division as it visits the stumbling Islanders. The Senators lost their fifth straight game on Jan. 12, the same night the Islanders routed Detroit 6-0 to pull even with Ottawa at 48 points.

But with several key players returning from injury, including Jason Spezza and Daniel Alfredsson, Ottawa responded with a franchise-best 11-game winning streak. The Senators had won 13 of 14 before Saturday night’s 4-1 road loss to the Red Wings. Buffalo regained the division lead on Saturday, dropping Ottawa to fifth in the Eastern Conference, but the Sabres don’t play again before the break, meaning the Senators would jump back atop the division with avictory Sunday.

If Ryan Getzlaf can make a quick recovery from his ankle injury, he’ll be one of nine Anaheim Ducks to suit up at the Olympics. First, the Ducks have a different goal in western Canada. Anaheim will try to head into the Olympic break on a high note on Sunday as it looks to win its fourth straight trip to Edmonton, where the Oilers may be glad to finish a dismal two-month stretch. Getzlaf hasn’t played since injuring his left ankle Monday in a win over Los Angeles, and if he can’t go Sunday, there will be major doubts about his status as one of the top centers for host Canada.

Getzlaf is still part of a large contingent of Ducks players chosen to skate in Vancouver, a list that also includes Finnish veterans Saku Koivu and Teemu Selanne, Swiss goalie Jonas Hiller and Canadian captain Scott Niedermayer. Considering that confluence of talent, the Ducks must be disappointed to be tied for 11th place in the Western Conference. Anaheim had won five of six and 13 of 18 before Saturday’s game at Calgary, but the Ducks’ charge up the standings hit a snag with a 3-1 loss.
