Colorado has not won a road series against the New York Mets in a little more than eight years. It likely will need to get the best of Johan Santana in order to do it again. The Rockies can earn that elusive series win in Queens with a second straight victory Thursday afternoon over the Mets, who could be without closer Francisco Rodriguez. Melvin Mora’s grand slam highlighted a five-run eighth inning in Colorado’s 6-2 win Wednesday night that evened its set with New York. The Rockies have won four times in 26 games in Queens since last winning a series there May 10-12, 2002. Despite the club’s futility in New York, the approach of the Colorado players remains the same no matter where they play.

Securing a winning series might not be easy against Santana, who is 4-1 with a 2.17 ERA over a span of eight starts. After allowing 11 runs and 22 hits in his previous two outings, Santana gave up five hits in 7 1-3 innings of a 1-0 win at Philadelphia on Saturday. The left-hander was excellent in his only appearance against the Rockies at Citi Field on July 30, 2009, giving up four hits and striking out eight in seven innings of a 7-0 win. Jason Hammel took the loss in that contest after giving up five runs and seven hits in 1 1-3 innings in his only appearance against the Mets. The right-hander hopes for a better effort Wednesday as he tries to build on his first win in a month. Hammel was 0-3 with a 5.33 ERA in four starts since beating San Diego on July 10, but allowed only a three-run homer in his sixth and final inning of a 6-3 win at Pittsburgh on Friday.

Only the Toronto Blue Jays have hit more home runs than the Red Sox this season, but Boston has put on a power display of its own against its division foe. The Red Sox seek their 10th win in 12 games this year against Toronto as they try to complete a three-game sweep Thursday afternoon at Rogers Centre. Boston has hit 153 home runs this season, second in the majors to the Blue Jays’ 178, but has six homers in the first two games of this series compared to Toronto’s three. Four of those home runs came in the Red Sox’s 10-1 rout of the Blue Jays on Wednesday night. Bill Hall went deep twice, while Adrian Beltre and J.D. Drew also connected for Boston, which has won 10 of its last 11 at Toronto. This is the first time the Blue Jays have dropped consecutive games to a division opponent since July 3-4. Excluding its struggles against the Red Sox, Toronto is 23-10 within the division this season.

Brad Mills will try to quiet Boston’s bats when he takes the mound for the Blue Jays on Thursday. The left-hander will make his second start of the season in place of Brett Cecil, who had his scheduled start pushed back to Saturday. Mills was bumped up to pitched Thursday and will be optioned to Triple-A following the start. After a stellar season debut against Baltimore, Mills was tagged for five runs and seven hits over four innings in Toronto’s 17-11 win over Tampa Bay on Saturday. He will be opposed by John Lackey, who has one win in his last seven starts. Lackey struggled his last time out, giving up five runs on eight hits over six innings in a 5-2 loss at Yankee Stadium on Saturday.

An impressive power display helped the Arizona Diamondbacks continue one of their best stretches of the season. It also might have aided Mark Reynolds’ comeback. After hitting one of the Diamondbacks’ four consecutive home runs, Reynolds will try to lead his team to its first sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday. Before Wednesday night’s 8-2 victory in Milwaukee, Reynolds hadn’t homered since Aug. 3 in a game in which he also was hit in the head by a pitch from Washington’s Collin Balester. He was back in the starting lineup the next game but pulled after striking out in each of his three at-bats.

The third baseman sat out three more contests before returning for the last three, though he entered Wednesday’s game in a 1-for-14 slump. After Andy LaRoche and Miguel Montero homered with one out in the fourth inning, Reynolds went deep and Stephen Drew followed with another solo shot. The Diamondbacks, who homered five times in their previous six games combined, tied a major league record with the run of four consecutive homers. The Diamondbacks have won six of seven and can match their longest winning streak of the season by completing a four-game sweep of the Brewers on Thursday. This is the 29th series between these teams since the Diamondbacks came into existence in 1998, but they have never swept one from Milwaukee.

No pitcher has been tougher to hit at home than Matt Cain. The Chicago Cubs know how tough he can be. The San Francisco Giants look for Cain to continue his dominant form at AT&T Park on Thursday when they complete a four-game set against the Cubs. Cain is 6-3 with a 2.48 ERA in 11 home starts, limiting hitters to a major league-best .187 average. The Giants have won six of his last seven starts at AT&T Park and he’s pitched at least seven innings in each victory. The right-hander is 4-1 with a 2.17 ERA in five career starts there against the Cubs. They have batted .168 against Cain in eight outings for the lowest average against him by any NL team.

The Giants had won four straight starts by Cain overall before Saturday’s 3-0 loss at Atlanta, where he went five innings and gave up all three runs. The right-hander was 3-0 with a 1.52 ERA in his previous four outings. San Francisco will have to avoid looking ahead to Friday’s opener of a three-game home series with NL West leader San Diego. The Giants trail the Padres by 2 1/2 games, and Jonathan Sanchez - Friday’s starter - already has boldly guaranteed a sweep. Before that big series, San Francisco will try to take advantage of a depleted Chicago team. The Cubs scratched Aramis Ramirez an hour before the first pitch of Wednesday’s 5-4 loss with a sore ribcage, and first baseman Derrek Lee is on the bereavement list and can’t play before Friday.

Before the first-place San Diego Padres can focus on a key weekend series against their closest pursuer in the NL West, they’ll look to secure a perfect season series against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Padres try for a ninth straight victory over the Pirates in the conclusion of their three-game home set Thursday afternoon. San Diego holds a 2 1/2-game lead over San Francisco, which visits Petco Park for a three-game series starting Friday. While the Padres know the importance of that set, there is some work to do as they try to improve to 6-0 against Pittsburgh this season. Adrian Gonzalez went 4 for 4 with two RBIs and Jerry Hairston Jr. added a two-run homer as the Padres secured their first winning home series over the Pirates since 2007 with an 8-5 win Wednesday. The Padres have the best record in the NL while the Pirates have the worst record in the majors. Pittsburgh, which has been outscored 32-14 by San Diego this season, has lost three in a row overall and six straight on the road.

Gonzalez is 9 for 15 with five RBIs in four games after going 2 for 20 in his previous five contests. He is 7 for 18 with a home run and six RBIs versus Pittsburgh this season. Hairston has homered three times in four games, and is 10 for 22 in his last six contests. Jon Garland will try again to match his win total from last season when he takes the ball for the Padres in the finale. Though Garland has lost two of his last three starts, he’s posted a 3.20 ERA during that stretch. He allowed two runs and three hits but walked six in seven innings of a 2-1 loss at Arizona on Friday.

The Florida Marlins have a chance to match their longest winning streak of the season. Starting Ricky Nolasco on the road gives them a good shot to do it. The right-hander will try to win his sixth consecutive start away from home Thursday night and help Florida sweep the Washington Nationals. Rookie outfielder Mike Stanton had a career-best five hits and four RBIs to lead the Marlins to a 9-5 victory Wednesday night. It was the third straight victory for Florida, which won a season-best four in a row from May 13-16. Rodriguez’s team has won five of six on the road as the pitching staff has posted a 2.55 ERA, and there’s reason to believe Nolasco can help Florida continue that success. The right-hander is 8-2 with a 3.86 ERA in road starts this season, winning his last five with a 3.03 ERA and 39 strikeouts compared to seven walks.

Nolasco, though, enters the game after one of his worst outings of the season, allowing seven runs and 10 hits in five innings of Friday’s 7-0 home defeat to St. Louis. He’s 0-2 with an 8.68 ERA against the Nationals this season but is 2-0 with a 2.66 ERA in his last four outings at Washington. Nolasco now looks to help the Marlins complete their first sweep of Washington since June 29-July 1, 2009. The Nationals try to avoid that fate behind Livan Hernandez, who has given up one earned run in four of his last five starts. The first one of those outings came at Florida on July 17, but he was on the wrong end of a 2-0 loss.Hernandez held the Los Angeles Dodgers to two runs - one earned - and five hits over seven innings Saturday in a 3-2 loss in 10 innings.

The Philadelphia Phillies usually get the best of Clayton Kershaw, but the Los Angeles Dodgers starter now has the benefit of facing a depleted lineup. The Phillies try to defeat Kershaw for the fifth straight time Thursday night in the finale of a three-game set at Citizens Bank Park. Kershaw is facing Philadelphia for the first time since making one start and one relief appearance in last year’s NL championship series, allowing a combined seven runs in 6 2-3 innings. Including those two outings and two in the 2008 NLCS, he’s 0-4 with a 7.83 ERA in his last seven games versus the Phillies, lasting no longer than 5 1-3 innings in four starts.

The Phillies, though, are missing Ryan Howard, Chase Utley and Shane Victorino, with Victorino likely to return this weekend. They suffered another injury when backup first baseman Ross Gload strained his right groin and left Wednesday’s 2-0 victory. Gload will be re-evaluated before this game. Mike Sweeney replaced him Wednesday and is likely to start this matchup. Kershaw is trying to avoid losing three straight starts for the first time in his three-year career. He yielded six runs - on two three-run homers by Adam Dunn - over six innings in a 6-3 loss to Washington last Friday. Philadelphia didn’t need much offense Wednesday to even this series thanks to Roy Oswalt, who yielded five hits in seven innings to earn his first victory with the club. Brad Lidge, previously a teammate of Oswalt’s with Houston, worked the ninth for his 15th save in 19 chances.

The Baltimore Orioles’ continued resurgence under Buck Showalter helped two of Kevin Millwood’s teammates end winless droughts during a series with the Cleveland Indians. Millwood will try to end his own skid while leading the Orioles to a season-high fifth straight win and their first road sweep of the Indians in 23 years Thursday night. The Orioles improved to 8-1 under Showalter with a 3-1 victory Wednesday night as Brad Bergesen earned his first win since May 12. A 14-8 victory the previous evening gave rookie Jake Arrieta his first in nearly a month. Millwood hasn’t recorded a victory since June 24 and enters this start having lost three consecutive decisions. Facing the Indians could help since he’s 4-1 with a 3.86 ERA in five matchups and won his only outing as a visitor at Progressive Field on April 29, 2006, while with Texas.

Another victory over the Indians would also give Baltimore its first five-game win streak since June 17-21, 2009. If Millwood can build off his previous start, he might have a chance to deliver that victory. After giving up at least five runs in five consecutive starts, the veteran right-hander yielded one run and four hits over six innings Saturday against the White Sox but did not get a decision in a 4-2 loss. Orioles starting pitchers have posted 2.30 ERA in nine games under Showalter, with Arrieta’s most recent outing the only non-quality start in that span. Millwood will be supported by an offense that’s continued to hit well since Showalter’s debut Aug. 3, with the Orioles batting .308 in those nine games. That has put Baltimore on the verge of its first sweep in Cleveland since April 10-12, 1987.

8:10 pm EDT Thu Aug 12, 2010

Two games into their key series, the Chicago White Sox and Minnesota Twins are right where they were to begin the set. With a one-game lead in the AL Central on the line, the division rivals conclude their series Thursday night at U.S. Cellular Field. After Minnesota hit five homers in a 12-6 win Monday to take sole possession of first place, Chicago limited the Twins to six hits in a 6-1 victory Tuesday to move back into a tie atop the Central at 64-50. While one club will earn a slight advantage by winning the series, the teams play six more times after Thursday’s contest - three next week in Minnesota. Konerko’s club could have the momentum after snapping a three-game skid by beating the Twins for the fourth time in 11 meetings. Carlos Quentin hit a two-run homer for Chicago, which has won 21 of 24 at home. The former All-Star is 3 for 6 with two homers and six RBIs in the series after entering in a 1-for-15 slump.

A day after John Danks gave the White Sox eight solid innings, Gavin Floyd looks to win his career-high fourth consecutive start. Floyd has allowed three runs in 28 innings while going 3-0 in four starts, giving up two in seven innings of a 4-2 win at Baltimore on Saturday. The right-hander is 6-2 with a 1.19 ERA in his last 12 outings. He was not as dominant in his only start versus Minnesota this year, allowing four runs in five innings of a 7-4 loss July 16. However, he has a 1.17 ERA while winning his past two home starts against the Twins - both in 2008 - and is 4-0 with a 0.86 ERA in his last six overall at U.S. Cellular Field. Joe Mauer is hitting a modest .276 against Floyd, but he’s 5 for 9 in the series. The All-Star catcher is 27 for 50 with 19 RBIs in his last 13 games.

8:10 pm EDT Thu Aug 12, 2010

After three straight thrilling one-run games, the New York Yankees might find a drop in intensity in their next series. They’ll begin a four-game set Thursday night against the lowly Kansas City Royals with slugger Mark Teixeira likely to return to the lineup and CC Sabathia in search of his 15th win. New York became the first team in the majors to reach 70 wins after a 7-6 victory at AL West-leading Texas on Wednesday night. The Yankees rallied from a 6-1 deficit after five innings, chasing Cliff Lee in the seventh and taking the lead in the ninth on Marcus Thames’ RBI single. Closer Mariano Rivera allowed a leadoff triple to Elvis Andrus in the bottom of the ninth before stranding him at third by retiring the next three hitters. Rivera was the loser in Tuesday’s 4-3, 10-inning defeat.

The comeback helped the Yankees avoid a third straight loss - they fell 2-1 on Monday to archrival Boston. New York increased its lead in the AL East over Tampa Bay to 1 1/2 games. Thames served as the designated hitter and went 5 for 10 in the two games with the Rangers. Teixeira missed the series since his wife gave birth to the couple’s third child, but the Yankees expect him back against the Royals. Teixeira went 7 for 16 with two homers, five RBIs and eight runs scored as New York took three of four July 22-25 from Kansas City. The Royals used veterans Jose Guillen, Scott Podsednik and Rick Ankiel in that series, but none of those players are currently on the team. A younger team is back home after losing the final four games of a 2-7 road trip.
