Coors Field has long had a reputation as a home run hitter’s ballpark. Albert Pujols hasn’t been able to take advantage of that in recent years. Pujols and the Cardinals meet the Colorado Rockies for the first time this season in the start a three-game series Tuesday night. Pujols, who will make his ninth All-Star appearance next week, has nine homers in 32 career games in Denver. But the reigning two-time NL MVP has none in eight games there since May 30, 2007, batting .250 with four RBIs.Pujols, though, remains the Cardinals’ most dangerous batter. He’s hitting .305 and leads the club with 20 homers, 60 RBIs and 91 hits - one more than former Rockies slugger Matt Holliday. While Pujols has five homers and 10 RBIs in the last eight games, Holliday is homerless in 12 games after going deep in four straight. St. Louis resumes play after a 7-1 win over Milwaukee on Sunday for a split of the four-game series. Adam Wainwright celebrated his selection as a first-time All-Star by throwing a five-hitter and chipping in a three-run double.

Also representing the Cardinals at the All-Star game will be Yadier Molina as starting catcher, Chris Carpenter and Holliday. St. Louis’ only win in seven contests versus Colorado last year came Sept. 26 at Coors where Wainwright outpitched Ubaldo Jimenez, who’s 14-1 this season and is headed to the Midsummer Classic with Troy Tulowitzki. Colorado took three of four from San Francisco after a 4-3 win in 15 innings Sunday. Todd Helton’s sacrifice fly scored Dexter Fowler with the winning run. The Rockies’ Jeff Francis will try to bounce back from his shortest - and worst - outing of 2010 when he gets the call Tuesday. The left-hander was tagged for a career high-tying eight runs and seven hits in three innings of a 13-3 loss to San Diego on Wednesday.

The Chicago Cubs have won four straight over the Arizona Diamondbacks for the first time. They’ll try to extend that streak Tuesday night with Carlos Silva on the mound when the teams continue a three-game set at Chase Field. Chicago has always struggled against Arizona, going 36-52 from that franchise’s 1998 inception through last season. After Arizona won the teams’ first meeting of 2010, however, the Cubs have responded with a total of 10 homers and 37 runs to easily take the next four. Starlin Castro and Geovany Soto each drove in two runs as part of an 11-hit performance by the Chicago lineup in a 9-4 victory Monday. Alfonso Soriano could be back in the lineup after he went 4 for 23 last week during a seven-game homestand. Soriano delivered a pinch-hit, two-run homer Monday, and is 8 for 12 with five homers and 12 RBIs over the Cubs’ last four games against Arizona.

Derrek Lee also did not start Monday after going 3 for 25 on the homestand. Aramis Ramirez returned to the Chicago lineup after missing two games with a sprained left thumb, and had a single in four at-bats. The Cubs will give the ball to their top starter in Silva, who is 0-2 with a 3.04 ERA while receiving four total runs of support in his last four starts - all team losses - after winning his previous six. Chicago won all 10 of Silva’s starts from April 16-June 7. The right-hander allowed two runs over 7 2-3 innings last Thursday in a 3-2, 10-inning loss to Cincinnati. Silva turned in his worst outing as a Cub on May 1 in a 7-5 win over Arizona, allowing a season-high five runs over five innings and not receiving a decision. The Diamondbacks have lost three straight since winning Kirk Gibson’s managerial debut last Friday against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Arizona has totaled six runs in the three losses.

CC Sabathia has won six straight starts, but extending that streak may not be easy since he’s pitching in a difficult venue for him against a starter who is also on a roll. The New York Yankees ace looks to notch a rare victory near his hometown at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum on Tuesday night when he faces fellow All-Star Trevor Cahill, who is unbeaten at home for the Athletics. Sabathia has posted a 2.00 ERA in winning every start since the beginning of June and can equal his career-best streak of winning seven straight outings Aug. 5-Sept. 7, 2005, with Cleveland. It probably won’t be easy for the native of Vallejo, about 30 miles north of Oakland. In 10 starts at the Coliseum, the left-hander is 2-5 with a 5.95 ERA - his highest mark in any current AL ballpark. That includes a four-hitter in a 4-2 loss to the Athletics on April 22. After that defeat, the veteran admitted he used to press pitching in front of friends and family, but he believes that’s in the past.

Sabathia has pitched eight innings in each of his last three outings, yielding two runs in a 4-2 home win over Seattle on Thursday. He’ll be facing a tough opponent in Cahill, who is 7-0 with a 2.12 ERA over his last nine outings. The right-hander, who has never faced New York, is 4-0 with a 1.35 ERA in five home starts. Cahill, who gave up one run over seven innings in an 8-1 victory at Baltimore on Thursday, was ecstatic to be selected by Yankees manager Joe Girardi to represent the A’s for the All-Star game in Anaheim near his hometown of Oceanside, Calif. The Yankees have won three straight after opening this series with a 3-1 victory Monday. Javier Vazquez went seven innings as part of a three-hitter, with Mariano Rivera bouncing back from a blown save Sunday with a perfect ninth for his 19th save. Mark Teixeira homered and Curtis Granderson tripled in a run as New York improved to 3-1 against Oakland. The Yankees are trying to capture a series at the Coliseum for the fourth straight time.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are in the thick of NL West race thanks to a remarkable divisional record. Other games have been another story for the Dodgers, especially against teams from the NL East. Los Angeles again tries to shake its struggles against the East and avoid losing four straight to the Florida Marlins for the first time in a single season Tuesday night. After going a franchise-worst 4-11 in interleague play, the Dodgers gladly resumed the NL portion of their schedule with a trip to San Francisco and Arizona. Los Angeles won five of six against those division rivals to move to 23-6 against the West, the best record for any major league team within its division. Just as the Dodgers seemed to be getting back on track, a 6-5 loss to the Marlins in Monday’s series opener dropped them four games behind first-place San Diego. Los Angeles fell to 4-10 against opponents from the NL East.

The Dodgers rank second in the NL in both batting average and runs per game, but are hitting .241 and averaging 3.7 runs against the East. After winning the opener of the season series, they’ve lost three straight to the Marlins - all by one-run margins. Vicente Padilla, coming off his best outing of his season, will try to help Los Angeles overcome its struggles against the East when he takes the ball Tuesday. Padilla gave up one run and three hits in seven innings of Wednesday’s 8-2 win over the Giants, his 100th career victory. The 11-year veteran threw 98 pitches in his third start after missing nearly two months with a sore right forearm. Padilla feels like he’s approaching the same consistency he showed down the stretch last year for the Dodgers. The right-hander went 4-0 with a 3.20 ERA in eight games for Los Angeles over the final 5 1/2 weeks of the 2009 regular season, and 1-1 with a 3.63 ERA in three playoff starts.

With Zack Greinke recapturing his Cy Young form, the Kansas City Royals are playing better baseball these days. Greinke looks to extend his personal winning streak to four while the Royals seek a fifth victory in six games Tuesday when they continue their visit to the Seattle Mariners, the last-place club in the AL West. Kansas City has won eight of 11, batting .327 with runners in scoring position in that stretch. The Royals went 4 for 11 in RBI situations during Monday’s 6-4, 10-inning win over Seattle to open this three-game set. The Royals’ strong stretch also coincides with the resurgence of Greinke, who is 3-0 with a 3.66 ERA in his last four starts after going 1-8 with a 4.05 ERA in his first 13. Improved offense has aided the reigning AL Cy Young winner, who’s received 22 total runs of support in his last four outings to match the total from his first 13.

Greinke yielded one run in the first seven innings Wednesday before getting tagged for five in the eighth, but still eked out a 7-6 win over the Chicago White Sox. Greinke has had little trouble in seven starts against the Mariners, going 3-0 with a 1.44 ERA and two complete-game victories at Safeco Field, including a one-hitter last Aug. 30. He threw seven shutout innings at home against Seattle on April 27, but didn’t get a decision in the Royals’ 3-2 victory. The Mariners had expected to welcome Erik Bedard back to the rotation Tuesday, but he has been scratched from his anticipated season debut after suffering shoulder soreness during his last bullpen session. His return from a second shoulder surgery in as many years is now uncertain. Instead of Bedard, Wakamatsu will hand the ball to Ryan Rowland-Smith. The Mariners have lost eight of his last nine starts. The left-hander may not have many chances left to prove he deserves a spot in the rotation. He made a solid case during Thursday’s 4-2 loss to the New York Yankees, yielding two runs in six innings.
