Wade Davis has become quite a different pitcher since he last faced the Minnesota Twins. He’ll try to win his fifth straight start and pitch the Tampa Bay Rays back into sole possession of the AL East lead Thursday afternoon at home against the Twins. Davis gave up four runs over 4 1-3 innings July 3 in an 8-6 win at Minnesota. He exited with Tampa Bay trailing 4-1, and that outing ended a six-start stretch in which he went 0-5 with a 6.32 ERA. The right-hander has turned his season around by posting a 2.22 ERA in four outings since that one at Target Field. He yielded two runs over seven innings last Friday in a 3-2 win over the New York Yankees. Davis will try to continue a string of stellar efforts by Rays starters, who have lasted at least seven innings in a franchise-best six straight games.

Tampa Bay couldn’t take advantage of seven strong innings by 14-game winner David Price in Wednesday’s 2-1, 13-inning loss. Price failed to add to his AL-leading victory total as Tampa Bay fell into a tie for first in the East with the Yankees. With New York idle Thursday, Tampa Bay with a victory would regain the division lead heading into a weekend in which it travels to face Toronto while the Yankees host the arch-rival Red Sox. The Rays on Wednesday welcomed back Ben Zobrist, who went 1 for 5 at first base after missing the previous six games due to lower back stiffness. Regular first baseman Carlos Pena has missed four straight games, but may be able to pinch-hit Thursday. Delmon Young had a tiebreaking RBI single in the 13th inning Wednesday as Minnesota overcame new closer Matt Capps’ blown save in the ninth. Winners in nine of their last 11, the Twins remained 1 1/2 games behind Chicago for the AL Central lead.

Freddy Garcia is enjoying a winning streak of eight starts as a visitor to Comerica Park. Max Scherzer has won his last six outings at the Detroit Tigers’ home. One of those streaks is bound to end Thursday afternoon when the Tigers and Chicago White Sox complete their four-game series. Garcia is 18-6 with a 3.74 ERA in 28 career starts against Detroit, including 9-1 with a 3.72 ERA in his last 11. He’s 8-0 with a 2.80 ERA in his last eight outings at Comerica as a visitor, including a 6-2 victory May 18 in which he allowed two over six innings. Garcia did lose once at Comerica during that stretch - in his only start there for the Tigers on Sept. 23, 2008, against Kansas City.

Garcia will be pitching on extra rest after allowing three runs over six innings to earn a 9-5 win over Seattle on July 29. The White Sox have been cautious with the 33-year-old right-hander, who is 19 innings shy of surpassing his total from the previous three seasons combined. He’s 1-1 with a 3.12 ERA in four starts this year with at least six days’ rest. While Garcia’s streak in Detroit is impressive, Scherzer has also taken advantage of the park’s spacious dimensions, posting a 1.33 ERA while winning all six of his home starts since a loss to Baltimore on May 14. This is the right-hander’s second start against the White Sox. He gave up three runs over 7 1-3 innings in a 3-0 road loss June 10.

The Colorado Rockies are going to need a substantial run to get back into serious playoff contention. Beating the lowly Pittsburgh Pirates would be one way to start. The Rockies, who lost a home series to the Pirates last week, try to snap a six-game road losing streak Thursday when they open a four-game set at PNC Park. Colorado is coming off a split of a two-game home set with San Francisco, winning 6-1 Wednesday to move within 5 1/2 games of the wild card-leading Giants. The Rockies, who are beginning a seven-game road trip, also trail St. Louis and Philadelphia. Gonzalez homered twice Wednesday and Ubaldo Jimenez struck out nine in seven innings for his major league-leading and club record-tying 17th win. He’s first Colorado pitcher to reach that mark since Jeff Francis, who will start Thursday, went 17-9 in 2007.

The Rockies have won five of six overall since dropping eight in a row, which included two losses to NL-worst Pittsburgh during a three-game series July 27-29. Colorado scored two runs in each of the losses to the Pirates, but has averaged 7.7 in the six games since. Francis won’t win 17 games this year, but is looking to win his third straight decision. He gave up two runs in six innings of a 17-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Friday. The left-hander has won three straight starts against the Pirates, but hasn’t faced them since 2007. Despite the two victories over the Rockies last week, the Pirates have dropped 10 of 13 overall including a 9-4 defeat to Cincinnati on Wednesday. Pittsburgh has been outscored 49-16 in its last seven games. Andrew McCutchen was back in the lineup after leaving Tuesday’s win with a bruised neck. The Pirates leader in runs and stolen bases homered to lead off the first before giving his team another scare in the seventh, when his left knee was caught in a patch of sod while attempting to make a sliding catch. He remained in the game.

In just two games, Buck Showalter has already seemed to have an effect on the Baltimore Orioles. Showalter will try to stay unbeaten as Orioles manager and lead his team to its first series sweep of the Los Angeles Angels in seven years Thursday night. The Orioles had started the second half 3-14 when Showalter, hired July 29, made his debut with the team Tuesday night. Baltimore won that first game under its veteran manager 6-3 to open this three-game series with the Angels. The Orioles followed by hanging on for a 9-7 victory Wednesday night. Luke Scott homered for the third straight game to help Baltimore withstand Los Angeles’ rally behind 17 hits. Felix Pie drove in three runs on his three hits, and Adam Jones went 3 for 4 for his third multihit performance in four games.

Baltimore was batting .233 in the six games before Showalter’s arrival but the team is hitting .338 in the two games against the Angels, losers of 10 of 13. The Orioles’ starting pitchers also have a 2.77 ERA in this series after posting a 7.39 mark in their first 17 games after the All-Star break. Jake Arrieta will try to keep that going by ending his recent struggles. The rookie right-hander, who has never faced the Angels, is 0-1 with an 8.56 ERA in his last three starts and hasn’t gotten through the fifth inning in his past two. He threw 102 pitches while giving up three runs and walking a career-high five over 4 1-3 innings Friday at Kansas City, but escaped without a decision in a 7-5 loss. As they try to get back to .500, the Angels will try to help Dan Haren to his first win with the team and first since June 12. The right-hander, acquired from Arizona on July 25, has been given a combined two runs of support in two starts with his new club and is 0-6 with a 4.12 ERA in his last nine outings.

San Francisco Giants vs Atlanta Braves Live Streaming

7:10 pm EDT Thu Aug 5, 2010

While this four-game set at Turner Field could be a potential playoff preview, there’s one reason the Atlanta Braves might not be too keen on seeing the San Francisco Giants in October. Tim Lincecum’s six wins versus Atlanta are more than he has against any other opponent, a total the two-time reigning NL Cy Young Award winner looks to increase Thursday night in the majors’ toughest venue for visitors. Atlanta has a two-game lead over Philadelphia in the NL East, the same edge San Francisco holds over St. Louis in the wild-card race. Both teams have pitching staffs that look built for the playoffs - the Giants have baseball’s second-best ERA while the Braves are fifth - but Lincecum may give San Francisco a trump card.

The right-hander beat them April 11 as he had 10 strikeouts over seven innings, yielding two runs in a 6-3 win. The Braves will see a slightly different delivery from Lincecum than the one they’re used to. He went to a revised wind-up before Friday’s start against the Dodgers after some recent inconsistency, bringing both hands over his head. It seemed to work. After allowing two runs early, Lincecum cruised through seven innings and struck out nine in a 6-5 win. He’ll have a big challenge at Turner Field, where the Braves are a major league-best 36-14. McCann and Chipper Jones hit back-to-back, third-inning homers in Wednesday’s 8-3 win over the visiting New York Mets, and the pair combined for six hits and five RBIs. The Giants, meanwhile, will be looking to avoid consecutive losses for the first time since July 1-2. San Francisco had won four straight before getting shut down by Ubaldo Jimenez in a 6-1 loss at Colorado on Wednesday.

7:10 pm EDT Thu Aug 5, 2010

Roy Oswalt’s debut with the Philadelphia Phillies was a disappointment, but the three-time All-Star expects better thing in his second start for the reigning NL champions. Considering his recent track record against the Florida Marlins, perhaps he shouldn’t. The Marlins have hit Oswalt hard the last three times they’ve matched up, but they’ll be fighting to avoid a three-game sweep Thursday night as visiting Philadelphia tries to win for the 12th times in 14 games. Already with Roy Halladay and Cole Hamels atop their rotation, the Phillies acquired Oswalt from Houston figuring they could boast perhaps the majors’ toughest trio of starters.

Oswalt’s debut performance certainly wasn’t what Philadelphia was hoping for as it tries to make a fourth consecutive postseason run. He surrendered five runs and 11 baserunners over six innings in an 8-1 loss at Washington on Saturday. There’s hardly a guarantee of that happening against the Marlins, who have had Oswalt’s number since 2008. After going 5-2 with a 1.88 ERA in his first nine starts versus Florida, he’s 0-2 with an 11.40 ERA in his past three, surrendering five homers in 15 innings. Shortstop Hanley Ramirez is 10 for 22 with two homers against Oswalt. Ramirez, however, is hitting .162 over his last nine games. The Phillies haven’t had any problems offensively so far in August, even with Ryan Howard on the disabled list. Rookie Domonic Brown drove in three and Raul Ibanez added two RBIs as Philadelphia chased Anibal Sanchez in the fifth inning of Wednesday’s 7-2 win.

The Boston Red Sox can head into a series with their rivals carrying some momentum, and having Daisuke Matsuzaka on the mound against the Cleveland Indians might help. Matsuzaka will try to earn his third straight win and help the Red Sox split their four-game set against the visiting Indians on Thursday night. The Red Sox trail Tampa Bay and the New York Yankees by 6 1/2 games for the AL East lead and the wild card. They could make up ground in one or both of those races in a four-game series at Yankee Stadium beginning Friday night. First, Boston would like to finish a seven-game homestand in positive fashion, and Matsuzaka might be the right man to make it happen.

The right-hander is 3-0 with a 0.86 ERA in his last three starts against the Indians, including a 4-1 win June 7 in which he gave up four hits over eight scoreless innings. He’s 2-0 with a 2.92 ERA in his last four outings overall but was a little shaky in his most recent start. Matsuzaka allowed four runs and seven hits over six innings Saturday against Detroit, but he avoided a loss when the Red Sox rallied for a 5-4 win. David Ortiz had the walk-off hit in that victory, and he extended his hitting streak to 13 games - his longest in three years - with a solo homer Tuesday night. However, Boston fell 9-1 for just its third loss in nine games. The Red Sox, batting .304 in their previous eight contests, were held to six hits and Jacoby Ellsbury went 0 for 4 in his return after missing two-plus months with fractured ribs.

Adam Dunn’s future with the Washington Nationals remains murky, but the slugger is finding ways to help the team in the meantime. Dunn will try to continue his power surge in Thursday night’s finale of a four-game series with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Nationals’ official website reported that Dunn was placed on waivers Tuesday, with the move coming four days after an unsuccessful attempt to trade the first baseman. If a player on waivers is claimed, a team has 48 hours to work out a trade or bring him back. Washington could still trade Dunn before the Aug. 31 deadline if he goes unclaimed, or the team can sign him to a contract extension.

So far, it hasn’t proved a distraction to Dunn as he’s hit four homers and driven in seven runs in four games this month. He went deep twice and had an RBI single in a 7-2 win Wednesday, giving him an NL-best 28 homers and 71 RBIs this season. While attempting to take a third consecutive series over the Diamondbacks and claim their sixth victory in eight games overall, the Nationals will try to help Ross Detwiler to his first win this season. Detwiler, who has never faced Arizona, has been given a combined three runs of support in his two starts since being recalled from the minors July 25. The left-hander was hurt by five unearned runs in a loss at Milwaukee that same day - his first major league start following offseason hip surgery. He did not get a decision in Saturday’s 7-5 win over Philadelphia despite allowing one run and five hits over 5 1-3 innings.

The first-place San Diego Padres have had plenty of problems scoring against the Los Angeles Dodgers this year, and have yet to cross the plate when facing Chad Billingsley. Billingsley looks to extend the longest active scoreless innings streak in the majors Thursday night at Dodger Stadium in the finale of a four-game set. While San Diego continues to surprise with the best record in the NL, it hasn’t done much at the plate in losing seven of 11 meetings with Los Angeles. The Padres have scored three runs or fewer eight times, and three of their six shutouts have been at the hands of the Dodgers. That was the case Wednesday night as Vicente Padilla threw a two-hitter for his fourth career shutout and added two hits in a 9-0 rout. Padilla took a no-hitter into the seventh inning.

The Padres used a 14-hit attack to win 10-5 in Monday’s opener, and got a solo homer from Miguel Tejada in the first inning of Tuesday’s 2-1 loss. San Diego has no runs and three singles in 17 innings since. It should be tough to break out against Billingsley, who hasn’t allowed a run over his last 21 2-3 innings. The right-hander pitched on three days’ rest due to Clayton Kershaw’s five-game suspension, and allowed two hits over 6 2-3 innings in Saturday’s 2-1 loss at San Francisco. Billingsley has limited the Padres to seven hits in 45 at-bats over 13 1-3 scoreless innings in beating them twice this year. He’s 6-1 with a 2.25 ERA in his last eight outings against San Diego. Slugger Adrian Gonzalez is 10 for 40 in his career against Billingsley. The first baseman is 10 for 41 against Los Angeles this year, and 1 for 11 in this series.

10:10 pm EDT Thu Aug 5, 2010

The Texas Rangers have been a below-average offense for the past few weeks, but they had a banner night in the batter’s box and in the courtroom Wednesday. They’ll have to face Felix Hernandez on Thursday night, but the visiting Rangers have every reason to believe they can stay hot after their two latest performances against the Seattle Mariners ace. Texas was the third highest-scoring team in the majors as of July 20, averaging 5.2 runs, a pace that has cooled considerably in recent weeks. The Rangers came into Wednesday’s game having scored 3.0 runs per game since July 21, and they totaled three in losing their first two games of August. The drought didn’t continue, as David Murphy gave Texas a 6-5 lead with a three-run homer in the fifth inning and Michael Young’s seventh-inning grand slam sealed an 11-6 win.

Less than an hour after the team capped its biggest offensive output since a 12-1 win over Cleveland on July 6, there was another reason for the Rangers to celebrate. Hall of Fame pitcher and team president Nolan Ryan’s group won a bankruptcy court auction for the team that lasted 10 hours, beating a near $600 million bid from Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban with a final offer than included $385 million in cash. Back on the diamond, Texas will get the typically unenviable task of facing Hernandez. That, however, is a challenge the Rangers have relished more than any other team. Eleven of the right-hander’s 49 career losses have come against Texas, while no other opponent has beaten him more than seven times.
