Stephen Jackson was deemed a team detriment prior to being traded by the Golden State Warriors. On the Charlotte Bobcats, he’s perhaps been their most valuable player. With the Bobcats on the fringe of playoff position, Jackson has yet another big game Saturday night when he faces his former Warriors teammates. Jackson was known to lose his cool with Golden State. In September, he was fined $25,000 by the NBA for going public with his trade demand, then was suspended for two preseason games by the Warriors for what the club termed “conduct detrimental to the team.”

The veteran swingman eventually got wish, getting dealt along with Acie Law to Charlotte in exchange for Raja Bell and Vladimir Radmanovic on Nov. 16. While the Warriors have been one of the league’s worst teams for the second straight season, the Bobcats have a chance to make the postseason for the first time in their history. Charlotte got a big confidence boost Friday night, getting 21 points from Jackson in a 98-83 win over the Los Angeles Lakers. The Bobcats snapped a two-game skid to move within one game of Miami for the eighth playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

The Atlanta Hawks don’t seem to have much confidence offensively when they visit Miami. An outstanding opening week of March, though, should have them brimming with confidence right now. Winners of four straight, the Hawks and their surging offense look to end their road struggles against the Heat on Saturday night. Atlanta beat Milwaukee 106-102 in overtime Feb. 28, and has averaged 118.3 points in winning its first three games of March to produce the club’s longest winning streak since a six-game run Dec. 5-18. The Hawks, however, are opening a three-game trip at a venue where they have not had much success. Atlanta has lost 25 of its last 29 games at Miami, averaging 84.2 points and shooting 40.6 percent. That includes two losses in three games in the first round of last year’s playoffs, a series the Hawks ultimately won in seven games.

Atlanta has been held under 80 points in four of its last five road games against the Heat, including a 92-75 loss Jan. 4. Miami has been stingy defensively overall this season, allowing 95.5 points per game. However, the Hawks have scored at least 100 in five of their last six games away from Philips Arena. They’re returning to the road following a 127-122 home win over Golden State on Friday night.

The highly anticipated summer of 2010 is on its way, but for now the only competition between the New York Knicks and the New Jersey Nets is determining who’s currently playing worse. Though it’s the Nets hoping to avoid infamy over the NBA’s final month, the Knicks have also struggled mightily heading into Saturday night’s meeting at Madison Square Garden. New Jersey and New York have set themselves up to be major players this summer, when names such as LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh could be available as free agents.

The Nets will have more than $23 million in salary cap space to play with and the Knicks should have nearly $32 million, but neither team has given any potential superstar much of an on-court incentive to move to the New York metropolitan area. New Jersey needs four wins in its final 23 games to avoid matching the 1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers for worst record in league history, while the Knicks haven’t been faring any better recently. New York’s 102-96 loss at Toronto on Friday was its 11th in 13 games and its 20th in 26.

The Chicago Bulls can point to a banged-up roster as one reason they’ve lost three straight, but a growing injured list has yet to derail the NBA’s hottest team. The Dallas Mavericks already have three road wins against Eastern Conference playoff contenders during their 10-game winning streak, and they’ll look for a fourth as they visit the struggling Bulls on Saturday night. Although guard Jason Terry was beginning a two-week recovery from facial surgery and newly acquired center Brendan Haywood missed the final three quarters of Friday’s game against Sacramento due to back issues, Dallas still extended its longest winning streak of the season with a 108-100 victory.

The Mavericks benefited from an unsurprising 31-point, 12-rebound effort by Dirk Nowitzki, but were also buoyed by a career-high 22 points off the bench from rookie Roddy Beaubois. None of Dallas’ wins during its run have come by more than 10 points, and its last eight have come by single digits, but despite the lack of blowout victories, the Mavs have put together their longest winning streak since they won 17 in a row from Jan. 27-March 11, 2007.

With three consecutive victories, the San Antonio Spurs have seemed to emerge from their recent slump. The Spurs will attempt to continue that surge Saturday night against the Memphis Grizzlies, who are trying to avoid their longest home losing streak since moving from Canada. Losers in 11 of 19 entering this week, San Antonio has bounced back by beating its past three opponents by an average of 10.7 points, including a 102-91 home win over New Orleans on Friday night. Balanced offensive efforts have keyed the Spurs’ turnaround, and Tony Parker was one of seven players in double figures Friday with 20 points.

Despite battling an ailing ankle and hip, Parker has averaged 18.0 points on 60.5 percent shooting in the past three games. The team needs the veteran guard to play well down the stretch—17 of its final 23 games are against winning teams and 15 of them are on the road. San Antonio has averaged 107.0 points and shot 51.5 percent over its last three games after averaging 97.2 points and shooting 43.1 percent in its previous 19. The Spurs have also had at least six players reach double figures during its current win streak.

While the Houston Rockets are likely to be without two key players, the Minnesota Timberwolves missing one could make the bigger difference Saturday night. Though the Rockets are banged up and the deal for Kevin Martin hasn’t worked out well, they have a good shot at winning their 11th straight over the Timberwolves considering Al Jefferson won’t take the court. The only time Houston has been below .500 came after an opening-night loss, but it will happen again Saturday if the Rockets fall for the ninth time in 12 games. They’ve dropped five of seven since acquiring Martin from Sacramento even though he’s averaged 21.9 points following the trade. Maybe playing a bigger role in Houston’s downfall is the absences of Trevor Ariza and Kyle Lowry.

That duo has accounted for 24.2 points, 8.3 assists and 9.6 rebounds per game. Ariza has missed the last five with a hip pointer, Lowry has sat out 10 straight with a sprained ankle and coach Rick Adelman doesn’t expect either player to return until next week. He also mentioned Lowry’s absence has limited the rest given to starting point guard Aaron Brooks, something that could be a problem if this game is anything like the last one between these teams.

8:30 pm EST Sat Mar 6, 2010

The Milwaukee Bucks have been one of the NBA’s hottest teams since late January, winning 14 of 18 to become a factor in the Eastern Conference playoff race. As impressive as they’ve looked, their competition has been anything but. A visit from LeBron James and the league-best Cavaliers on Saturday night will provide an excellent opportunity for a signature win, but the Bucks will have to find a way to snap a six-game slide against Cleveland. The Cavaliers have won six straight and 19 of 22 to build a six-game lead on Orlando atop the East and a three-game cushion on the Los Angeles Lakers for the league’s best record. They rallied from a 21-point first-half deficit to beat Detroit 99-92 on Friday behind 40 points and 13 rebounds from James.

Cleveland and Orlando are two of three teams with 14 wins since Jan. 27, and Milwaukee is the surprising third name on the list. The Bucks were three games out of the East’s ninth playoff spot as of Jan. 26, but they have climbed to sixth by going 14-4 since. Despite the remarkable run, Milwaukee hasn’t exactly been beating up on top competition. Thirteen of the 14 wins have come against the teams currently occupying the eighth through 15th spots in the East, including a 102-74 rout of Washington on Friday that capped a sweep of a home-and-home series against the Wizards.

Locked in a hotly contested Western Conference playoff race, the Phoenix Suns would love to take advantage of a lengthy homestand, but they didn’t get that season-high, seven-game stretch off to a strong start. A matchup with the struggling Indiana Pacers would seem to give the Suns a prime opportunity to bounce back, but they’ve had trouble containing the Pacers in recent meetings. Phoenix will try to avoid a third straight loss to Indiana and earn its 14th win in 18 games overall Saturday night. The Suns are in a dense cluster of seven teams within 5 1/2 games of one another in the West and will face two of those clubs, Utah and Portland, to conclude its seven-game homestand.

That homestand got off to an inauspicious start Thursday night, when the Suns lost to the Jazz 116-108 to fall 1 1/2 games behind them in the conference. Phoenix led by 11 points entering the fourth quarter but seemed to run out of steam in its fourth game in five nights, getting outscored 41-22 over the final 12 minutes. It was a rare defensive lapse of late for the Suns, who have held opponents to 99.1 points per game while winning seven of nine. On the season, Phoenix has allowed 106.1 points per game. The Suns’ defense figures to get tested by the Pacers, who have averaged 115.4 points in their last five games in the series, including 117.5 in back-to-back wins.

The Utah Jazz are coming off a confidence-boosting, come-from-behind victory. They weren’t as successful against the Los Angeles Clippers earlier this week, but a change of venue should help. After winning a key matchup in the race for playoff position, the Jazz look to continue their home dominance of the Clippers on Saturday night. A 116-108 victory over Phoenix on Thursday night kept Utah in fourth place in the Western Conference, 1 1/2 games ahead of the Suns. Utah erased an 11-point deficit with 7:43 remaining and avoided its fourth loss in six games. Three days earlier, the Jazz nearly overcame a 17-point deficit in the fourth quarter of a 108-104 road loss to the Clippers.

At home, though, Utah has won 39 of its last 40 against Los Angeles. The Jazz are averaging 107.3 points and shooting 50.8 percent during that stretch. Utah is 24-8 at EnergySolutions Arena this season, averaging 106.2 points and shooting a league-best 51.4 percent. Jazz point guard Deron Williams, who has been playing with a brace on his injured right wrist, is averaging 27.5 points and 12.5 assists while shooting 61.8 percent in his last two home games.

Though it’s not official, the defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins should be playing postseason hockey next month. The same cannot be said for the Dallas Stars as they begin a tough road trip that could go a long way toward determining their playoff hopes. The Penguins look to continue their mastery over Stars on Saturday at Mellon Arena. While Pittsburgh and New Jersey will contend for the top spot in the Atlantic Division and likely the No. 2 or 3 seed in the Eastern Conference, Dallas is currently outside the top eight in the West.

Coming off the Olympic break, the Stars have been outscored 11-2 in home losses to Los Angeles and St. Louis, and that lack of offensive spark also couldn’t have come at a worse time. Dallas also will visit NHL-leading Washington and always-tough Buffalo before a season-high six-game homestand. The Stars had won six of nine before the league-wide shutdown, but coach Marc Crawford said that matters little now. Dallas now must focus its energies on trying to beat Pittsburgh for the first time in nearly seven years.

A recent surge has moved the Boston Bruins into a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Their strong play on the road has been largely responsible. That bodes well for a team that will play its next seven games away from home, a stretch that begins Saturday against the New York Islanders in a matchup of two of the league’s weakest offenses. That the Bruins are even in danger of missing the playoffs is surprising after they finished first in the East last season with 116 points, the franchise’s best total since 1971-72. Boston, though, has been hit hard by injuries to key players and has struggled to fill the void following the offseason trade of 36-goal scorer Phil Kessel to Toronto.

A 10-game losing streak Jan. 16-Feb. 6 left the Bruins out of the top eight spots in the conference, but the team has won five of six to climb to seventh, one point ahead of Atlanta, the Rangers and Montreal. Boston swept a four-game road trip to Montreal, Buffalo, Tampa Bay and Florida going into the Olympic break and has since split a pair of home games. The Bruins now look to win five consecutive road games for the first time since midway through last season. They play their next seven on the road - all in the Eastern time zone - and don’t return to TD Garden until facing Pittsburgh on March 18.

A playoff berth appears unlikely for the Carolina Hurricanes, who have traded away several veterans in the last month. That hasn’t stopped them from playing like they belong in the postseason, and they’ll look for an eighth straight victory as they visit the Florida Panthers on Saturday. Streaks have been a big part of Carolina’s season, with the team’s current position in 14th place in the Eastern Conference largely the result of a 14-game losing streak early in the season. Despite the absence of injured goalie Cam Ward and recent departures of key contributors Matt Cullen, Scott Walker and Joe Corvo in the last several weeks, the Hurricanes have won 11 of 13.

They’ve scored four or more goals in each of their last five contests, taking a 2-0 lead in the first seven minutes of a 4-1 win over Ottawa on Thursday night. Carolina had newcomers Alexandre Picard and Brian Pothier and minor-league callups Jay Harrison and Zach Boychuk in the lineup, with Boychuk notching two assists. The Hurricanes are still seven points out of a playoff spot with several teams in their way, but the fact the postseason is even a remote possibility is a surprise.

The Washington Capitals already owned the best record in the NHL before bolstering their roster at the trade deadline. They’ve also been just about unbeatable at home. Fresh off netting two goals in his team debut, Scott Walker will try to help the Capitals extend their franchise-record home winning streak to 13 games while avenging a rare home loss to the New York Rangers on Saturday night. Washington leads the league with 94 points and appeared to improve its chances at the team’s first Stanley Cup title by making four deals prior to Wednesday’s deadline, adding Walker, defensemen Joe Corvo and Milan Jurcina and center Eric Belanger.

Walker, acquired from Carolina for a seventh-round draft pick, made an immediate impact, scoring twice in a 2:58 span of the third period in Thursday’s 5-4 win over Tampa Bay. The right wing’s first multi-goal game in three years extended Washington’s home winning streak to 12 games for the NHL’s longest such run since Boston won 14 in a row Oct. 25, 2008-Jan. 1, 2009. The Capitals are a league-best 24-3-3 at home, but one of those defeats came against the Rangers - 4-3 on Oct. 8.

Goaltender Brian Elliott was a key reason the Ottawa Senators surged to the top of the Northeast Division prior to the Olympic break. It now seems he will also determine just how far they go the rest of the way. Elliott is expected to start Saturday night when the Senators host their provincial archrivals, the Toronto Maple Leafs, and try to avoid a third consecutive loss since the hiatus. Ottawa has dropped 4-1 decisions to the New York Rangers and Carolina since play resumed, and fallen one point behind Buffalo for the Northeast lead. While Elliott absorbed the defeat to the Rangers on Tuesday, he also backstopped the Senators to nine victories during their franchise-record 11-game winning streak from Jan. 14-Feb. 4 while Pascal Leclaire recovered from a fractured cheekbone.

Leclaire got his chance Thursday, but coach Cory Clouston gave him a quick hook after he allowed two goals to the Hurricanes in the first 6:23. Elliott stopped 14 of 15 shots in relief and appears to have secured the No. 1 spot for the stretch run. The 24-year-old Elliott, though, has shown little of the form that helped Ottawa surge into the playoff race when facing Toronto this season. He is 0-2-0 with a 4.28 goals-against average, and was pulled after two periods of a 5-0 road defeat Feb. 6 that ended Ottawa’s record run.

It has been a month since the Atlanta Thrashers traded away the player who holds nearly every offensive franchise record, but they’re not having problems scoring goals.Offense has never come easily for Atlanta, however, against Antero Niittymaki. The Thrashers look to continue their unlikely playoff push with a third straight victory Saturday night against the struggling Tampa Bay Lightning, who will likely have Niittymaki in net as the goalie tries to improve to 17-0-0 against Atlanta. The Thrashers figured to have a hard time replacing Ilya Kovalchuk’s offense when they dealt the team’s longtime goals and points leader to New Jersey on Feb. 4.

But after losing its first game without the Russian, Atlanta has averaged 4.0 goals during a 4-0-2 stretch that straddled the Olympic break. The team has won twice since the NHL resumed play, moving into an eighth-place tie in the Eastern Conference with the New York Rangers and Montreal. The Thrashers scored four goals in the first 15 minutes of their 6-3 win over the New York Islanders on Thursday night, getting major contributions from some of their newcomers. Niclas Bergfors, acquired from the Devils in the Kovalchuk trade, had his fourth goal in seven games with the Thrashers and added an assist, while Evgeny Artyukhin and Clarke MacArthur each scored in his Atlanta debut after trade deadline deals.

Two of the top players the Phoenix Coyotes acquired before the trading deadline made an immediate impact with their new team. Coach Dave Tippett hopes this is a sign of things to come. Wojtek Wolski and Lee Stempniak look to build on impressive debuts and help the Coyotes win their second in a row Saturday night when they host the Anaheim Ducks. Sitting in fourth place in the Western Conference with 81 points, Phoenix appears to have a good chance of reaching the playoffs for the first time since 2002. Unlike previous seasons, when the Coyotes were essentially out of postseason contention at the trading deadline, this year’s team made an NHL-high seven deals Wednesday to bolster its chances of making a deep playoff run.

Two of Phoenix’s biggest additions are Wolski and Stempniak, and both scored goals in Thursday’s 3-1 victory over Colorado. Stempniak, acquired from Toronto, scored in the first period and Wolski, traded from the Avalanche, scored the go-ahead goal with 22 seconds left against his former team. Radim Vrbata added an empty-net score with a second left for his team-leading 21st goal. Stempniak and Wolski have combined for 33 goals on the season, and are expected to give Phoenix’s offense a boost.

For the second year in a row, the St. Louis Blues appear poised to make a late-season surge for a playoff berth. The Blues look to win six straight for the first time in more than six years Saturday night, though the last team to beat them stands in the way as they visit the Colorado Avalanche. With 18 games remaining, St. Louis is in the mix with several teams for one of the final playoff spots in the Western Conference. This is somewhat surprising considering the Blues were 12 points out of eighth place with the conference’s second-worst record on Jan. 8. St. Louis, however, has been through this kind of turnaround before. Last season, the Blues closed with a 9-1-1 run to surpass five teams in the standings and earn the sixth seed in the West.

A sputtering offense was St. Louis’ biggest problem earlier in the season, but that isn’t the case anymore. The Blues have 23 goals during their season-best five-game winning streak, scoring at least four in each. St. Louis, which hasn’t won six in a row since Dec. 6-18, 2003, had reached the four-goal mark just once in its previous 12 games. Oshie and Paul Kariya are leading St. Louis’ suddenly resurgent offense. Oshie has scored in each of the last four games, while Kariya has four goals and four assists during the winning streak. The Blues haven’t lost since falling 5-2 to the Avalanche on Feb. 8.

The Los Angeles Kings and Montreal Canadiens have both split two road games since the end of the Olympic break. Montreal, though, is feeling much better about its split. The visiting Canadiens will try to make it five straight over the Kings on Saturday night in a matchup of teams that haven’t advanced past the first round of the playoffs since they met in the 1993 Stanley Cup finals. Los Angeles and Montreal each won its first game after the break before losing Thursday. The Kings felt their effort was lacking as they were outshot 25-12 over the final two periods of a 4-2 loss at Nashville.

Montreal fell 3-2 at San Jose after taking a one-goal lead into the third. Carey Price made 37 saves but was unable to stop Manny Malhotra from scoring the winner with less than 5 minutes left. The Canadiens, tied with Atlanta and the Rangers for the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, were still happy with their effort. The Kings are starting a stretch of six of eight at home. They were 11-1-1 in 13 games before Thursday, when Alexander Frolov and Drew Doughty scored. Frolov has four points in two games since the break and nine in his last seven.

The San Jose Sharks were happy to see their slumbering attack wake up after two straight losses. It’s almost never been dormant when the Columbus Blue Jackets come to town. The Sharks look to win their 11th straight home game against the Blue Jackets on Saturday night in the teams’ final matchup of the season. San Jose lost 3-1 at Buffalo before the Olympic break and returned with a 4-3 defeat to New Jersey on Tuesday, finishing with 20 shots - a season low at home. Leading goal scorers Patrick Marleau and Dany Heatley extended their droughts without scoring to six and five games, respectively.

They got back on track when Marleau had a short-handed goal and assisted on a power-play tally by Heatley in Thursday’s 4-3 home win over Montreal. The Sharks have a 10-point cushion atop the Pacific Division over Phoenix. It shouldn’t be too big a question since Columbus has never won in regulation at HP Pavilion. The Blue Jackets dropped their first six visits, won 3-2 in overtime Jan. 8, 2004, and have lost the last 10 games at San Jose, where they have been outscored 69-28 all-time. That includes a 6-3 loss in the Sharks’ home opener Oct. 8 as Heatley had a hat trick in his first game in front of his new fans.
