The Boston Bruins were hoping to use the post-Olympic portion of the NHL schedule to begin to show some consistency and start peaking heading into the playoffs. Instead, they’re stuck dealing a familiar problem - an injury to Marc Savard. The two time All-Star is out indefinitely after suffering a concussion from a brutal blindside hit in Boston’s latest game, leaving the Bruins to continue their seven-game road trip Tuesday night against the Toronto Maple Leafs without their top forward. Savard led the Bruins with 88 points in 2008-09 while being named to his second straight All-Star team, and played all 82 games to guide Boston to the Eastern Conference’s top regular-season record.

A broken left foot and, later, a partially torn MCL have left the Bruins without Savard for 23 games this season, and he’s about to miss some more action. Savard was carted off the ice after suffering a grade two concussion while being leveled by Pittsburgh’s Matt Cooke in a 2-1 loss Sunday, sidelining him after what coach Claude Julien felt was a cheap shot. There’s no timetable for Savard’s return to the ice. The Bruins’ medical staff will spend the next four to five days monitoring him before updating his prognosis.

Jarome Iginla has not scored a goal in his last 19 games against the Detroit Red Wings. Ending that streak might help the Calgary Flames pass Detroit in the playoff race. Iginla and the Flames will try to move ahead of the Red Wings in a critical Western Conference matchup at Joe Louis Arena on Tuesday night. Detroit holds the eighth and final playoff spot in the West, with Calgary one point behind. The teams split their first two meetings, and have not faced each other since November. Iginla has scored at least 30 goals in nine straight seasons, but does not have any in a regular-season game against the Red Wings since March 3, 2004. He has 10 assists in the last 19 meetings.

The Flames captain broke a less lengthy goal drought against another opponent Sunday, recording a hat trick that featured two power-play goals on slap shots in a 5-2 win at Minnesota. Iginla had not scored in his previous nine games versus the Wild. The pressure was on Calgary to win after Detroit beat Chicago 5-4 earlier Sunday. The visiting Red Wings scored five times in the second period as Brian Rafalski, Valtteri Filppula and Niklas Lidstrom each had a goal and an assist.

Back-to-back losses by the Nashville Predators and Atlanta Thrashers have both anxious to get back on the ice to correct their mistakes. The teams will meet for the second time this season Tuesday night as Nashville begins a four-game road trip. The Predators are in seventh place in the Western Conference, ahead of ninth-place Calgary by two points. Nashville was eager to move on after blowing a one-goal lead heading into the third period of Sunday’s 4-2 home loss to Vancouver. Atlanta was echoing a similar sentiment after a 4-0 home loss to Carolina on Sunday. The Thrashers are in 10th place in the East, three points behind eighth-place Boston.

Nashville is looking to get better goaltending. Dan Ellis made 23 saves in a 4-2 loss at Detroit on Friday and Pekka Rinne, who Trotz has said will get the bulk of the starts the remainder of the season, had 24 on Sunday. Rinne made 23 saves and Martin Erat and Joel Ward each had a goal and an assist in a 4-3 home victory over Atlanta on Jan. 30. Bryan Little scored twice for the Thrashers. Erat, though, has scored once in his last 11 games and Patric Hornqvist has no goals in his last nine.

An improbable win concluded a successful road trip for the Montreal Canadiens. They’d probably prefer that their postseason push not be as dramatic. With the regular season quickly winding down, the Canadiens look to improve their playoff position as they face the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday night. Montreal is opening a three-game homestand after defeating Anaheim 4-3 in a shootout Sunday night, the finale of a 3-1-0 road trip. The Canadiens rallied with goals by Brian Gionta and Andrei Markov in the final 1:50 of the third period, and Tomas Plekanec added the shootout winner in the fourth round.

That vaulted Montreal over Boston into seventh place in the Eastern Conference, two points behind Philadelphia and seven behind Ottawa. The Canadiens, with 15 contests remaining, have played more games than any other team in the league. Plekanec continues to lead Montreal as it tries to advance to the playoffs for the third straight season. After ending a four-game point drought with an empty-net goal in a 4-2 win over Los Angeles on Saturday night, he found the back of the net at 7:48 of the second period versus the Ducks to start the comeback.

New York Islanders coach Scott Gordon believes his team will eventually turn the tables on the Philadelphia Flyers. Judging by each club’s recent play, it won’t happen anytime soon. Philadelphia looks to extend the NHL’s longest active win streak over one team to 15 games when the Islanders visit the Wachovia Center on Tuesday night. The Flyers have continued their mastery of the Islanders this season, winning four meetings to remain perfect in the series since a 4-2 loss at Nassau Coliseum on Feb. 12, 2008. New York has been outscored 48-23 during the 14-game skid, managing two goals or fewer 12 times.

The latest matchup resulted in a 2-1 Flyers home victory Jan. 30. Strong play since Peter Laviolette was named coach Dec. 4 has put the Flyers in position to reach the playoffs for the third straight season. They are 21-15-3 under Laviolette and moved to 6-1-1 in their last eight with a 3-1 victory over visiting Toronto on Sunday night. Simon Gagne and Daniel Briere scored 76 seconds apart in the second period and Michael Leighton made 27 saves as Philadelphia won its fourth in a row at home, strengthening its grip on sixth place in the Eastern Conference.

Coming off another tough loss, the Minnesota Wild are slipping further out of playoff contention. A home game against a Florida Panthers team mired in its worst road losing streak in more than four years could help them get back on track. The Wild, trying to avoid losing their third in a row, look to win their eighth straight game over the Panthers when the teams meet Tuesday night. Desperately in need of points to avoid missing the playoffs for a third straight season, Minnesota came out of the Olympic break with an impressive 4-0 win at Calgary on Wednesday. The Wild were unable to carry any momentum from that victory, however, losing to NHL-worst Edmonton 2-1 in a shootout on Friday and falling to the Flames 5-2 on Sunday.

Guillaume Latendresse, who has seven goals in nine games, accounted for all three goals in those defeats for Minnesota, which has dropped to 13th place in the Western Conference, seven points back of eighth-place Detroit. Richards might feel differently if his team struggles this week, though. After this game, the Wild hit the road for two contests, visiting the Red Wings on Thursday and Northeast Division-leading Buffalo a day later.

The Vancouver Canucks have been involved in some high-scoring games since the Olympic break. That’s probably the kind of contest the Colorado Avalanche want to avoid when the division rivals meet for the first time since November. The Canucks will try to defeat the Avalanche for the fourth straight meeting and maintain sole possession of first place in the Northwest Division on Tuesday night. Vancouver leads Colorado by two points in the Northwest after rallying from a one-goal deficit entering the third period for a 4-2 win at Nashville on Sunday. The Canucks lead the NHL with nine victories this season when they trail after two periods.

The Canucks have scored 17 goals and conceded 14 in winning three of four since the NHL season resumed as they enter the final two games of their league-record stretch of 14 straight on the road. Ryan Kesler has a career-best nine-game point streak, Daniel Sedin has eight assists in a six-game run and Western Conference points leader Henrik Sedin upped his total to 85 with a goal and an assist Sunday. The Avalanche know how potent the Canucks can be.

The Ottawa Senators have struggled to find their form since the end of the Olympic break. They hope a trip to Western Canada and an eventual stop in the Olympic host city will provide a spark. The Senators begin a three-game road swing against Northwest Division opponents Tuesday at Edmonton, where the Oilers are looking to extend a modest two-game winning streak. Ottawa led the Northeast heading into the hiatus for the Olympics in Vancouver - where it plays Saturday - but has gone 0-2-1 since play resumed to drop two points behind Buffalo. The Senators, who play 11 of their final 16 on the road, were able to grind out a point Saturday in a 2-1 shootout loss to Toronto as both captain Daniel Alfredsson and center Peter Regin did not play due to a flu bug that spread throughout the locker room during the past week.

Both Alfredsson - the team leader with 34 assists and 51 points - and Regin are expected to play this game, and with the team relatively healthy ahead of this trip, coach Cory Clouston wants his team to focus on the task at hand. While that might have been a tough sell since Edmonton has an NHL-low 48 points, the Oilers have won consecutive games due to the solid goaltending of Jeff Deslauriers. He made 28 saves before stopping 4 of 6 shootout attempts in a 2-1 victory over the Minnesota Wild on Friday and followed that effort with a 22-save shutout in Monday’s 2-0 victory over the New Jersey Devils.

The Olympic break didn’t seem to give the playoff-hopeful Anaheim Ducks a boost. Even their play at the Honda Center has suddenly fallen off. After a deflating defeat in the opener of a seven-game homestand, the Ducks look to bounce back in a matchup with the lowly Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday night. Entering the break, Anaheim had won 14 of 20 and appeared in good shape to make a run entering the final stretch of the regular season. The Ducks had also won a franchise-record 11 straight games at home.Since then, Anaheim has lost back-to-back games at the Honda Center and three in a row overall.

Anaheim’s latest loss was particularly disheartening, giving up a 3-0 first-period lead before falling 4-3 in a shootout against Montreal on Sunday night. The Ducks have two more weeks of home games to get back on track. Koivu, who faced the Canadiens for first the first time after 10 years as their captain, went scoreless for the second straight game. However, there were some bright spots for Anaheim. Corey Perry’s first-period goal extended a 10-game home point streak. He has five goals and six assists in his last nine games versus the Blue Jackets. Scott Niedermayer also scored, giving him three goals and five assist in his last seven contests.

With 21 games remaining, the Charlotte Bobcats are making a push for their first playoff appearance. A victory over the Miami Heat on Tuesday night could be critical to those hopes. Charlotte looks to win its third straight over the visiting Heat, who turned in one of their worst performances ever in their last game at Time Warner Cable Arena. The Bobcats are one-half game behind Chicago for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot, and one game behind Miami. Charlotte looks to erase that gap, and win the potentially important head-to-head tiebreaker, by clinching the season series and capping off a perfect homestand. The Bobcats defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 98-83 on Friday and topped Golden State 101-90 on Saturday, putting them in position for their first three-game winning streak since Jan. 26-30.

The last time the Heat came to town Jan. 20, Wallace had 20 points, 10 boards and five blocks and Stephen Jackson scored 24 as Charlotte rolled to its franchise-best ninth straight home win, 104-65. It was the Bobcats’ most lopsided victory and set a team record for fewest points allowed. The Heat missed 21 of 23 from 3-point range and shot 28.9 percent overall - fifth-worst in team history.

As a team hoping to claim a Western Conference playoff spot, the Houston Rockets should feel pretty confident going into a meeting with the rebuilding Washington Wizards. No win looks easy, however, after Houston’s latest performance. Coming off a particularly deflating defeat, the Rockets look to snap out of their extended funk as they visit the lowly Wizards on Tuesday night. Houston hasn’t given up in its bid for a trip to the postseason, but it hasn’t looked much like a playoff team lately, dropping 13 of 20 since Jan. 23. The Rockets have lost six of nine since trading the inactive Tracy McGrady and getting high-scoring shooting guard Kevin Martin in return.

They have fallen into a 10th-place tie in the West, 4 1/2 games behind Portland for the eighth and final playoff spot. A recent stretch of games against sub-.500 opponents hasn’t improved the Rockets’ postseason outlook. Houston shot 39.0 percent in a home loss to lottery-bound Sacramento on Wednesday, and after beating conference-worst Minnesota on Saturday, fell 110-107 in overtime at Detroit. Sunday’s defeat was especially hard to swallow, as the Pistons had lost their previous six games and were playing without starting point guard Rodney Stuckey, the team’s second-leading scorer and top playmaker.

The Indiana Pacers have virtually no chance of advancing to the postseason, but they still haven’t stopped fighting. Back home Tuesday night following a winless trip, the Pacers look to snap a four-game slide as they face the Philadelphia 76ers for the final time this season. With 11 losses in its last 13 games, Indiana is well out of the Eastern Conference playoff race and will likely miss the postseason for the fourth straight year. Playing their fourth game in five days, the Pacers capped an 0-4 western swing Saturday with a 113-105 loss to Phoenix, but showed plenty of intensity against the Suns. With 46.7 seconds left in the third quarter, Pacers guard Earl Watson got into an altercation with Phoenix forward Channing Frye, with Indiana teammates Danny Granger and Roy Hibbert jumping in to help.

While the Pacers came to the defense of their teammate, they need to do a better job defending their opponents. Indiana allowed an average of 114.8 points on its trip and is among the worst in the East, giving up 104.7 per game. Philadelphia is averaging only 96.4 points while losing eight of 11, but is looking to build off Sunday’s 114-101 victory at Toronto. Getting the start due to Samuel Dalembert being late to a team meeting, Thaddeus Young hit 13 of 18 shots and scored a career-high 32 points as all five starters scored in double figures to help the 76ers snap a five-game slide.

Orlando Magic coach Stan Van Gundy praised his team for its physical play in a hard-fought win over the defending NBA champions. Now he wants to see his players compete like that each time out - not just in games against the league’s premier teams. The surging Magic again look to play with a bit of an edge and avoid a letdown when they host the struggling Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday night. After watching the Los Angeles Lakers celebrate a title in Orlando in June, the Magic had been waiting all season for them to return. Sunday’s finals rematch had the feel of a playoff game, and this time the Magic came out on top, pulling out a 96-94 victory for their fifth straight win.

Vince Carter had 25 points and Dwight Howard finished with 15 points and 16 rebounds for Southeast Division-leading Orlando, which won for the 15th time in 19 games. It definitely had the intensity of an elimination game. Matt Barnes and Kobe Bryant continuously traded elbows and got in each other’s face, and three technical fouls and one flagrant were called in the contest. Orlando’s first opportunity to show that it can comes against a Clippers team it has dominated of late. The Magic have outscored Los Angeles by an average of 13.5 points in winning six straight in the series.

Playing away from Salt Lake City has given the Utah Jazz problems in the past, but that hasn’t been the case lately. If the offense continues to perform at its current clip, the team shouldn’t have much trouble on this four-game trip, either. Closing in on first place in the Northwest Division, the Jazz look to build on another strong offensive performance Tuesday night when they visit the Chicago Bulls, who try to avoid losing five in a row for the first time in 3 1/2 months. Utah boasts the league’s best home record since the start of the 2006-07 season at 126-30, but it has been another story on the road, as the team ranks 12th at 67-85. The Jazz again struggled on the road early this season, losing 12 of their first 19 away from Salt Lake City, before turning things around.

Utah has won eight of 10 road games to move into fourth place in the Western Conference and pull within 1 1/2 games of Northwest-leading Denver. With eight of their next 12 on the road, the Jazz know they’ll need to continue to play at a high level away from Utah to improve their chances of opening a playoff series at home. Mehmet Okur had a game-high 27 points against the Clippers to lead the Jazz to their third win in four games. Utah’s offense has keyed this stretch, averaging 118.7 points in those victories. The Jazz had a similar impressive offensive display in their first meeting of the season with the Bulls, a 105-86 home win Nov. 26.

After spending a month taking advantage of a schedule that included some of the league’s worst teams, the Milwaukee Bucks are one game into a stretch that sends three of the NBA’s best to the Bradley Center. So far, so good. A breakout performance from the struggling Brandon Jennings helped the Bucks top the team with the league’s best record, and they’ll look for a 10th win in 11 games Tuesday night as they try to snap the Boston Celtics’ four-game winning streak. Milwaukee was three games out of the Eastern Conference’s final playoff spot as of Jan. 26, but it has gone 15-4 since then to jump into fifth place.

Of the Bucks’ first 14 victories in that stretch, 13 came against the bottom nine teams in the East. Only Miami, which Milwaukee beat three times, currently owns a winning record. Visits from Cleveland, Boston and Utah in a seven-day stretch should give the Bucks a bigger challenge, but questions remained even after their first test. Jennings scored 25 points in a 92-85 victory Saturday over the league-best Cavaliers, who gave LeBron James a night off to rest his sore ankle.Milwaukee can hope Jennings’ effort, though, is the precursor of a personal turnaround.

The Portland Trail Blazers turned in one of their worst defensive efforts of the season their last time out, and with it went their three-game winning streak.Guarding the Sacramento Kings hasn’t proven to be nearly as difficult. The Trail Blazers look to get back on track Tuesday night when they host the Kings, who have been shut down offensively in losing four straight games against Portland. Coach Nate McMillan’s team had held its opponents to 87.7 points per game in winning three straight before heading to Denver on Sunday night, but the Trail Blazers struggled at both ends against the Nuggets.

Denver raced out to a 34-21 lead after one quarter en route to a 118-106 victory in which it shot 58.9 percent. Portland was held to 42.7 percent shooting. The Blazers are 4-16 when they allow 100 points, and 5-15 when they shoot less than 43 percent. After a rough game defensively, however, they’ve been able to bounce back. Portland’s allowed at least 110 points four previous times, and it’s yielded an average of 84.3 points in its next game. Portland hasn’t had a problem at either end over the past two seasons against Sacramento. The Blazers have averaged 103.0 points while giving up 87.8 to the Kings in winning the series’ past four meetings, including a 95-88 victory at the Rose Garden on Dec. 15 behind 25 points apiece from Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge.

Although Kobe Bryant is among the best clutch players in the NBA, the superstar has been unable to carry the Los Angeles Lakers to victories recently. Bryant and the Lakers look to avoid their first four-game losing streak in three seasons when they face the Toronto Raptors on Tuesday night. Bryant is among the league leaders with 27.7 points per game and averaged 33.3 in the last three contests, but was unable to prevent a loss in any of them. Los Angeles has dropped three in a row for the first time since Jan. 23-27, 2008.

Playing despite a stomach illness, Bryant scored 34 on Sunday, but missed a 20-footer as time expired and Los Angeles fell 96-94 to Orlando to finish 0-3 on an eastern road swing. Los Angeles has not lost four in a row since April 8-13, 2007. The Lakers have dropped three straight for the first time since Gasol arrived in a trade Feb. 1, 2008.
