A season-high fifth straight win would push Atlanta into eighth place in the Eastern Conference past the Boston Bruins, who visit Philips Arena on Tuesday night. Atlanta’s postseason chances appeared to be sliding away during an 0-5-1 skid from March 6-14. The Thrashers managed eight goals over that stretch, but have responded with a scoring surge that has powered them to four straight victories and within one point of the Bruins. The Thrashers outscored opponents 18-9 over the past four contests, with Nik Antropov and Colby Armstrong netting four goals apiece. Antropov has 21 points in his last 16 games and leads the team with a career-best 63.

Tuukka Rask stopped 18 shots in a 4-0 victory over Atlanta on Dec. 30, Boston’s ninth in a row in the series. He made 32 saves in a 4-3 shootout win Nov. 19 in the most recent meeting at Philips Arena. The Thrashers have not beaten the Bruins since a 5-0 home victory Dec. 29, 2007. Rask gave his team a much-needed boost by stopping 23 shots in a 2-1 win over the New York Rangers on Sunday, coming within 3:04 of his fourth shutout of the season. The Bruins had dropped three of four and were booed off the ice following a 3-0 home loss to Pittsburgh on Thursday night.

The Devils will try to end a streak of six straight games without a power-play goal when the Columbus Blue Jackets visit the Prudential Center for the first time Tuesday night. New Jersey is trying to catch Pittsburgh for the Atlantic Division lead, and it would help if it had better play with the man advantage. The Devils are 0 for 17 in their last six games and have the league’s worst percentage since Jan. 8 at 10.3 percent. That lack of production contributed to the end of New Jersey’s five-game home win streak in Saturday’s 1-0 loss to St. Louis.

One of his 11 power-play goals has been scored with New Jersey, which acquired the five-time 40-goal scorer Feb. 4 from Atlanta. Center Travis Zajac has gone 15 games without a power-play goal while Rolston has come up empty in all nine games since the Olympic break. They are tied with six apiece for second on the team behind Zach Parise, who has eight. New Jersey may have a hard time getting untracked against Columbus, which has killed off 21 of opponents’ last 23 power-play chances and 10 straight. The Devils are 6-9-1 against Western Conference opponents, and are facing the Blue Jackets for the first time since a 2-1 road win Jan. 16, 2009.

The second-year coach will give Scott Clemmensen another start, and Nathan Horton will run the power play as the Panthers open a three-game trip against the last-place Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday night. Florida has dropped seven of nine on the road and lost two of three during its last trip through Canada in January. That trek started with a 3-2 loss at Toronto on Jan. 5 before falling in Montreal and capping the stretch with a win over Ottawa.

A strong performance on the road could go a long way to helping Florida gain ground in the Eastern Conference playoff race. The team is 11th in the standings, seven points behind eighth-place Boston. DeBoer is turning to Clemmensen in net again after he made 29 saves in Sunday’s 5-2 win over Tampa Bay to end a three-game slide. Tomas Vokoun, the Panthers’ No. 1 netminder and a contender for the Vezina Trophy, posted a 4.29 goals-against average in starting each game of the slide while getting pulled twice. Clemmensen is 6-6-0 with a 3.41 GAA in 16 games.

The Southeast Division rivals will try to begin a late run at the expense of each other Tuesday night at the St. Pete Times Forum. The Hurricanes seem unlikely to be able to overcome a 5-17-5 start to reach the playoffs. They are tied for 12th in the Eastern Conference, eight points behind eighth-place Boston with 10 games remaining. Carolina earned back-to-back overtime wins over Washington and Pittsburgh last week, but could not defeat a third straight division leader and fell 5-3 to Buffalo on Sunday. The weary Hurricanes, playing their third game in four days, gave up five goals in the first 32 minutes.

The Hurricanes won all three games at Tampa last season but lost 5-2 in their most recent visit Oct. 10. On the verge of missing the playoffs for the third straight season, the Lightning are also eight points behind Boston with 10 games left. Five consecutive regulation defeats and a 2-11-1 record since Feb. 10 may have sunk Tampa Bay’s chances. A lack of offense is mostly to blame for the current skid, as Tocchet’s club has scored seven times over the past five games. Vincent Lecavalier and Steve Downie have accounted for most of the production during that span.

The injury-depleted Flyers look to win for just the second time in six games Tuesday night when they visit the Ottawa Senators. Philadelphia suffered a major blow last Tuesday, when goalie Michael Leighton suffered a season-ending ankle injury during a shootout loss at Nashville. The team had already lost primary goaltender Ray Emery for the season in February.

Carter, the Flyers’ leader with 33 goals and 60 points, is out three to four weeks with a broken bone in his left foot he suffered when he was hit by a shot in the first period of Sunday’s 3-1 loss to Atlanta. The injury will end Carter’s streak of 286 consecutive games played - the third-longest in team history. Carter is hopeful he can be back for the playoffs. The Flyers are tied with Montreal for sixth, but they’re just four points ahead of ninth-place Atlanta. The injuries are already taking a toll on Philadelphia, which has dropped four of five while scoring two goals or fewer in three of those defeats.

Rinne will try to lead the Nashville Predators to a seventh straight win Tuesday night when they host the Dallas Stars. Nashville has moved into commanding position for a playoff spot behind Rinne, who has posted a 1.15 goals-against average and a .959 save percentage in winning the Predators’ last six games. He has doubled his shutout total this season to six - fifth-most in the NHL. Rinne’s strong weekend helped put the Predators within a victory of their season-best seven-game winning streak from Nov. 12-25. He made 33 saves in a 1-0 overtime win over visiting Columbus on Saturday before a 23-save effort in Sunday’s 3-2 victory at St. Louis.

Dustin Boyd and Patric Hornqvist scored 48 seconds apart Sunday, with Boyd’s second goal of the contest the game-winner with 2:46 remaining. The Predators outshot the Blues 16-7 in the final period. Hornqvist, who has three goals and two assists in five games, was encouraged with Nashville’s strong play in the third. Rinne has started against Dallas once, making 27 saves in a 4-2 victory Oct. 31. The Predators have won two of three against the Stars this season, with all the meetings in the season’s first month. Dallas completed a 2-2-2 homestand with a 3-2 overtime loss to surging Phoenix on Sunday.

They are now in danger of returning home in fourth place and with the same point total they had before the trek. Mired in their worst losing streak in more than four years, the Sharks look to avoid going 0-6 on a road trip for the first time in 17 years when they face the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday night. San Jose had a three-game win streak snapped with a 3-2 overtime loss to Florida at home March 13, but the Sharks set off on their 10-day swing with 96 points - three ahead of Chicago in the West and nine up on second-place Phoenix in the Pacific Division.

The Sharks, who have not lost each contest of a six-game trip since March 19-29, 1993, are sputtering offensively, scoring two goals or fewer five times during the skid. Prior to the slide, San Jose was averaging a conference-best 3.33 goals per game. The Sharks’ only goal against the lowly Oilers came when Ryane Clowe scored his 18th with 3:02 left. In addition to their offensive woes, the Sharks are struggling defensively. San Jose, in the midst of its longest losing streak since going 0-7-3 from Nov. 5-30, 2005, yielded at least four goals four times in the last five games.

Phoenix Coyotes weren’t expected to come close to the playoffs, let alone contend for the Western Conference’s best record. With less than three weeks left in the regular season, this once-downtrodden club is tied atop the West with the Chicago Blackhawks. The Coyotes look to set a franchise record with a 10th straight victory Tuesday night in Chicago and move ahead of the Blackhawks in the teams’ second meeting in four days. Phoenix was tied for the West’s second-worst record in 2008-09, and expectations were low heading into this season as the team filed for bankruptcy over the summer and Wayne Gretzky stepped down as coach in late September.

Phoenix has picked up a number of points lately via the shootout, including each of the last three wins and five of seven. One of the Coyotes’ shootout wins came against the Blackhawks on Saturday night. Chicago led 2-0 in the second period and 4-2 in the third, but Phoenix - the only Western team the Blackhawks haven’t defeated this season - came charging back to win 5-4. Lee Stempniak scored twice and Vrbata had the lone shootout goal for the Coyotes, who are one win away from sweeping this season series for the first time in the franchise’s 30-year history.

Vancouver Canucks have won four straight over the Edmonton Oilers, but this trip to Rexall Place can’t be considered an easy game. The Oilers have knocked off two straight contenders to start this four-game homestand heading into Tuesday night’s matchup with the Northwest Division-leading Canucks. Vancouver fell 2-1 at Edmonton on Oct. 19 before winning the next four meetings. Western Conference points leader Henrik Sedin has eight of his 95 points against the Oilers this year and brother Daniel has the same total in three games versus Edmonton. The Canucks are 10 for 19 on the power play during the four-game run, with nine different goal scorers connecting on the man advantage.

The league-worst Oilers, however, are playing with confidence as they look for their first three-game win streak since a five-game run Dec. 3-11. They beat Detroit 3-2 in a shootout on Friday before a 5-1 victory over San Jose on Sunday. Rookie Devan Dubnyk earned his first victory Friday and nearly recorded his first shutout Sunday before Ryane Clowe scored with 3:02 left. Dubnyk, 2-8-2 with a 3.75 GAA, made 27 saves against the Sharks. The Canucks completed a 3-1-1 homestand with a 4-3 overtime loss to Detroit on Saturday.

Anaheim Ducks’ current winning streak has kept their playoff hopes alive. In order to reach the postseason, however, they’ll have to pass the Calgary Flames in the standings. After a strong finish to an extended homestand, the Ducks look to match a season high with their fifth consecutive victory when they face the Flames on Tuesday night. With three weeks remaining in the regular season, both Calgary and Anaheim have work to do to reach the postseason. The Flames are ninth in the Western Conference, four points out of the eighth and final spot held by Detroit.

The Ducks, who’ve scored 18 goals during the winning streak, last won five straight from Jan. 5-13. Teemu Selanne scored for the 21st time this season to become the 18th player in NHL history to reach 600 career goals. Playing in his 16th and possibly final season, the 39-year-old Selanne is the Ducks’ all-time leader with 373 goals. Selanne has 36 career goals against Calgary, but none in his last five games versus the Flames. Anaheim won its first two games against Calgary this season before falling 3-1 on the road on Feb. 13. The Ducks have been outscored 34-21 while losing nine of 11 in Calgary.

The Bobcats open a seemingly easy portion of the schedule Tuesday night against a Washington Wizards team trying to avoid losing its 12th in a row. Charlotte won seven of eight heading into Friday’s game at Atlanta, and was on the verge of picking up another victory until Joe Johnson hit a fallaway jumper over three defenders just before time expired in overtime to hand the Bobcats a 93-92 loss. Taking the court less than 24 hours after that heartbreaking defeat, Charlotte came out flat in losing 77-71 to Miami. The Bobcats, in the mix with the Heat, Toronto and Chicago for the final three playoff spots in the East, scored their fewest points since a 92-59 loss at Boston in the season opener.

The Bobcats open a five-game homestand Wednesday against Minnesota - the worst team in the West - before another matchup with Washington and games against struggling teams Toronto and Philadelphia. They’ll look to head home on a positive note after shooting a season-low 29.2 percent Saturday. Stephen Jackson missed 17 of 21 from the field, but he still had a team-high 18 points thanks to 10-of-10 shooting from the foul line. Despite Saturday’s disappointing offensive showing, Charlotte was able to stay in the game thanks to another strong defensive performance. The Bobcats limited the Heat to 35.9 percent shooting and have held each of their last 10 opponents under 100 points.

Indiana Pacers are all but assured of missing the playoffs for the fourth straight season, but they don’t seem content to coast to the finish. After an impressive home win over a postseason contender, the Pacers will try to snap a nine-game road losing streak by recording their first season sweep of the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday night. Barring a spectacular run, Indiana will likely finish with its worst winning percentage since going 28-54 in 1988-89, but it hasn’t let another disappointing campaign affect their recent play. The Pacers have won three of four and swept both games during a brief homestand over the weekend. After topping the Pistons 106-102 on Friday, they routed Oklahoma City 121-101 two nights later.

Granger hasn’t been any easier on the Pistons, averaging 28.9 points against them over the past two seasons. Two days after the team said he would be out indefinitely with a cheek injury, Granger scored 29 points in Friday’s win, and he had a team-best 25 in a 105-93 victory in the previous trip to the Palace on Jan. 22. The Pacers are hoping a return there can help them avoid a season-high 10th straight loss away from home. Indiana dropped 10 in a row on the road last season Jan. 9-Feb. 18, but comes into Tuesday’s game searching for a sixth straight victory over Detroit following eight consecutive defeats in the series, including five in a row in Auburn Hills.

The Nuggets could use another big effort from their All-Star forward as they look to bounce back from their latest loss while trying for a fifth consecutive win over the Knicks on Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden. Anthony has enjoyed many big scoring nights during his stellar seven-year NBA career, but none bigger than his career-high 50-point effort in a 128-125 home win over New York on Nov. 27. He shot 17 of 28 from the field and his last two points came off free throws that helped secure the win.

Anthony has had little trouble scoring against the Knicks, averaging 29.6 points in 13 career games and 31.3 on 53.9 percent shooting in his last four at Madison Square Garden. He could be in store for another big night against the Knicks, who’ve allowed 117.8 points per game during their four-game skid against Denver. The Nuggets , who have won three of four at Madison Square Garden, are opening a five-game road trip that features visits to playoff contenders Boston, Toronto, Orlando and Dallas after this contest. Denver is coming off its second loss in 10 games, 102-97 at home to Milwaukee on Saturday.

A visit from the Los Angeles Clippers could help them get back on track. Looking to avoid a third consecutive defeat, the Mavericks try to bounce back with a seventh straight home win over the Clippers on Tuesday night. Dallas won 13 straight games from Feb. 17-March 10, and appeared ready to challenge the Los Angeles Lakers for the top spot in the Western Conference. However, after a 115-99 loss at New Orleans on Monday, the Mavericks have dropped two in a row and three four since that winning stretch.

Mavericks have a chance to turn things around against the Clippers, who’ve lost four in a row and 10 of 11 between the teams. Losers of 10 straight on the road overall, Los Angeles hasn’t won in Dallas since April 19, 2006. Still, Dallas likely needs to play a more complete game than it did against the Hornets to get back to its winning ways. Jason Terry scored 24 points and Dirk Nowitzki added 16 for the Mavericks, who shot 51.9 percent but blew an early 16-point lead and committed 18 turnovers, which New Orleans converted into 35 points. After holding its opponents to 97.1 points per game on 45.0 percent shooting during the extended winning streak, Dallas is giving up an average of 112.8 points on 53.8 percent shooting over the last four.

Van Gundy’s Southeast Division-leading Orlando Magic look to win for the 11th time in 12 games Monday night, when they’ll face a Philadelphia 76ers team that’s dropped 12 of 14. Coming off a 26-point rout of San Antonio the night before, Orlando defeated Miami 108-102 in overtime on Thursday to open a three-game trip. Although his team wasted a 12-point lead with 4:45 left in regulation, Van Gundy complimented his club on how it closed out the back-to-back set.

Lewis scored 12 combined points in the previous three contests. In Orlando’s last game in Philadelphia, Carter and Lewis each hit three 3s and scored 19 points in a 126-105 victory March 1. Former St. Joseph’s star Jameer Nelson scored 22 points with 10 assists in that matchup as the Magic hit a season-high 58.4 percent from the field and won their sixth straight in this series.Howard posted his NBA-leading 54th double-double Thursday with 10 points and 11 rebounds, but he will look to do more Monday after being saddled with foul trouble against the Heat and picking up his 15th technical of the season.

Miami Heat didn’t have a good offensive performance in their last game, but a strong defensive effort helped them pull out a victory. That is exactly what happened in their two matchups with the New Jersey Nets this season. The Heat look for their third win in as many games against the lowly Nets on Monday night at the Izod Center.Facing a third straight loss, Miami defeated Charlotte 77-71 on Saturday despite shooting 35.9 percent. The Heat got only 14 points from Dwyane Wade and were playing without the injured Jermaine O’Neal, but turned in one of their best defensive games of the season.

The Heat moved a half-game ahead of Charlotte for sixth place in the Eastern Conference. Miami is in the top five in the NBA in scoring defense, yielding 94.9 points per game. That impressive average is the result of efforts such as the two performances against the Nets. Miami won the first matchup 81-80 on Nov. 14 and took the second 87-84 on Feb. 17. The Heat shot 39.2 percent in those contests but limited New Jersey to 39.0. Wade delivered a 3-pointer with 0.1 seconds left in the first victory, and the Heat overcame Wade’s first-quarter departure due to a sprained calf in the second meeting.

Atlanta Hawks wrapped up a playoff berth with a pair of wild overtime victories in their two latest games. Now, they’ll see how they fare against a team they might see in the first round. It took an extra five minutes for the Hawks to survive the visiting Milwaukee Bucks late last month, but the scene shifts to the Bradley Center on Monday night for the first of two more meetings between the potential postseason opponents. Joe Johnson, Josh Smith and Al Horford led Atlanta to the playoffs in the past two seasons after the franchise had experienced an eight-year drought, and there’s a feeling the Hawks may be a legitimate contender heading into their third straight postseason.

Atlanta lost 106-105 in Toronto on Wednesday on Chris Bosh’s jumper with two seconds left, but the Hawks rallied from a 10-point, second-half deficit Friday and beat Charlotte 93-92 in overtime on Johnson’s buzzer-beating fallaway jumper. Not to be outdone, the Hawks came from behind again Sunday against visiting San Antonio to clinch their postseason berth. The deficit was 14 early in the second quarter, but Marvin Williams had 26 points, Horford scored 22 and grabbed 18 rebounds and Johnson had 20 points to go with 13 assists in a thrilling 119-114 overtime win.

Dallas Mavericks’ recent 13-game winning streak, they beat the New Orleans Hornets despite struggling in the second half. Their inability to close games out has been a problem the last two games as well. The Mavericks visit the Hornets on Monday night, looking to hand the Hornets another blow to their very slim playoff hopes. Dallas won 13 in a row Feb. 17-March 10, including a 108-100 victory over New Orleans on Feb. 28.

On Saturday against Boston, Dallas led by seven early in the fourth quarter before the offense faltered en route to a 102-93 loss.Nowitzki scored 12 of his 37 points in the final quarter, but his teammates provided only nine more. The loss came three days after the Mavericks nearly blew a 25-point lead against Chicago before holding on for a 113-106 victory. In the game prior, Dallas’ streak was snapped with a stunning 128-94 loss to the Knicks. The good news for Terry and the Mavericks is that three of their next four games are against teams with losing records and they still have a comfortable lead atop the Southwest Division.

The Chicago Bulls hope to make a late push for a playoff berth. The Bulls look to win consecutive games for the first time in a month when they host the Houston Rockets on Monday night. With All-Star guard Derrick Rose and forward Joakim Noah in the lineup, Chicago snapped a 10-game skid with a 98-84 win at Philadelphia on Saturday. After missing four games with a sprained wrist, Rose scored 23 points in 37 minutes as the Bulls won for the first time since beating Portland on Feb. 26 - also the last time they won back-to-back games.

Though Noah had just seven points and four rebounds in nine minutes Saturday after missing 10 games with a foot injury, his hard-nosed play tends to spark the Bulls. Chicago averaged 95.8 points and 15.0 turnovers in the four games without Rose, who shot 9 of 16 from the field against the 76ers. The Bulls’ defense was the story, however, as they held lowly Philadelphia to 40.2 percent shooting and 1 of 17 from 3-point range. Chicago will now try to avoid losing six in a row at home for the first time since a nine-game skid from March 6-April 5, 2002.

The Toronto Raptors could use some momentum with a challenging four-game stretch beginning later this week. A matchup with a Minnesota Timberwolves team that has lost 12 straight could provide it. Looking to win two in a row on the road for the first time in more than two months, Toronto tries to extend its 11-game winning streak over Minnesota on Monday night. Chris Bosh scored 36 points and the Raptors snapped a six-game road skid with a 100-90 victory over New Jersey on Saturday.

Toronto is allowing a conference-worst 105.8 points per game, but moved to 20-0 when holding opponents to fewer than 100 points. The Raptors have not won two straight on the road since Jan. 6-8, but have won five in a row at the Target Center. With Bosh sidelined with a sprained right knee, Toronto earned a 110-102 victory in its last visit Feb. 10, 2009. Before hosting Utah and Denver and playing at Miami and Charlotte from Wednesday through next Monday, Toronto will try to sweep Minnesota for the sixth straight season.

As long he can bounce back against the San Antonio Spurs, all will be forgiven. A critical four-game homestand for the Thunder against fellow Western Conference contenders begins Monday night, when the Spurs visit the Ford Center looking to lock up their season series against Oklahoma City. Durant’s offensive game has rarely been anything but impressive in his third NBA season, as the league’s second-leading scorer has turned the Thunder into a legitimate playoff contender. Durant averaged 28.5 points but shot just 38.1 percent as Oklahoma City split the first two games of a three-game road trip, then delivered one of his worst games of the season Sunday.

Getting back on track against the Spurs won’t be easy. Durant has averaged 27.0 points but shot just 39.7 percent in three games versus San Antonio, including two losses. Jeff Green and Russell Westbrook were just as instrumental as Durant in Oklahoma City’s lone win, 101-98 at the AT&T Center on Nov. 14. San Antonio began a treacherous eight-day stretch Sunday with a disheartening loss in Atlanta prior to games against the Thunder, Lakers, Cavaliers and Celtics.

A resurgent Paul Pierce also has helped.Pierce and the Celtics look to win their fifth straight Monday night when they complete a three-game road trip against the Utah Jazz. Another division title is all but a foregone conclusion for Boston, which has a 10-game lead over Toronto with 13 games remaining. The Celtics have looked particularly strong this month, winning nine of 12, including the last four by an average of 13.5 points. The Celtics are coming off a 102-93 win over Southwest Division-leading Dallas on Saturday. Pierce scored 29 points while Rajon Rondo added 20 and 10 rebounds.

The Celtics were in top form defensively in a 105-86 win over the Jazz on Nov. 11. No Utah player scored more than 13 points in that game and the Jazz went 0 for 10 from 3-point range. Pierce will look to stay hot after going 10 of 17 from the floor against the Mavericks. Averaging 18.1 points this season, Pierce has averaged 28.0 over the last three games. While the Celtics have a commanding lead in the Atlantic, Utah trails Denver by two games in the Northwest Division.

The Grizzlies’ lingering problems at Arco Arena certainly haven’t helped their cause. In danger of missing the postseason for the fourth straight year, the Grizzlies look to end their road struggles against the Sacramento Kings on Monday night. Memphis has won seven of 10, but it’s likely too late to salvage its playoff chances. With 12 games left, the Grizzlies are in 10th place in the Western Conference, 4 1/2 games behind eighth-place Portland. Memphis hasn’t been to the postseason since 2006. A matchup at Sacramento is unlikely to help it end that drought. The Grizzlies franchise has lost 26 of 28 road games all-time against the Kings.

The Grizzlies have put an emphasis on maintaining their intensity down the stretch of games. Memphis matched a season high with 72 points in the paint and outrebounded Golden State 54-37 even though center Marc Gasol missed his third straight game with a strained back. He remains listed as day to day. Hasheem Thabeet, selected two spots ahead of Evans with the second overall pick in last year’s draft, has given the Grizzlies strong minutes as Gasol’s replacement in his first stint as a starter. Back after a stint in the D-League last month, Thabeet is averaging 7.3 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.3 blocks in his last three games.

Phoenix Sun have an outstanding chance at an emphatic bounce-back game. Scoring shouldn’t be scarce as the Suns visit the Golden State Warriors on Monday night in a matchup of teams that have used similar philosophies to much different degrees of success. One of Phoenix’s worst offensive games of the season wasn’t enough to keep it from earning a 93-87 win over Portland on Sunday night. The Suns shot 38.8 percent - their third-lowest mark of the season - and were held under 96 points for the fifth time. Just five days earlier, Phoenix posted the highest point total by an NBA team this season, beating Minnesota 152-114.

Each team has reached 100 points in their last 16 meetings, with the Suns averaging 119.0 and the Warriors posting 114.9. None of those games went into overtime. Despite the similarities between the teams, Phoenix’s talent and depth has made it one of the Western Conference’s top contenders. Golden State, meanwhile, has the league’s third-worst record. The Suns, winners of four straight, are one game behind fourth-place Utah. They are 18 games above .500 for the first time this season. Against the Trail Blazers, Stoudemire led Phoenix with 18 points - nearly five below his season average.

The Red Wings look to further solidify their postseason hopes with a third consecutive home victory Monday night when the Penguins return to Joe Louis Arena. Just making the playoffs, let alone a potential third straight Stanley Cup finals meeting with Pittsburgh, will be on the minds’ of the Detroit players in this contest. After winning the Stanley Cup in 2008 then losing 2-1 to Pittsburgh at home in Game 7 in June, Detroit is flirting with missing the playoffs for the first time since 1989-90.

The Red Wings concluded a 2-0-1 road swing with a 4-3 overtime win at Vancouver on Saturday. Henrik Zetterberg scored as the overtime buzzer sounded Saturday and the Red Wings rallied from an early two-goal deficit to remain in playoff position despite playing without injured forwards Dan Cleary and Patrick Eaves. It’s uncertain if both will be ready for this contest. The Red Wings will need that kind of effort to continue against the Penguins, who hold a two-point lead over New Jersey in the Atlantic Division and look to maintain second place in the Eastern Conference.

Ottawa’s franchise-record 11-game winning streak from Jan. 14-Feb. 4 is a distant memory as the Senators have gone 1-7-1 since the Olympic break. They matched a season high with their fifth straight loss Saturday, 5-4 at Dallas despite Jason Spezza’s third career hat trick. The defeat, coupled with Montreal picking up a point in a 3-2 shootout loss at Toronto on Saturday, leaves the Senators tied with the Canadiens for second place in the Northeast Division.

Making his first start in a week, Leclaire allowed five goals on 19 shots Saturday before being replaced by Elliott, who turned away six shots in the final 14:03. Leclaire went 0-6-1 with a 4.92 goals-against average in his last eight starts, but has gone 2-0-0 with a 1.50 GAA in two starts against Montreal this season. Elliott went 0-3-0 with a 3.45 GAA in his last four appearances. In the teams’ last matchup at the Bell Centre, Mike Brodeur made his third NHL start and stopped 32 shots in Ottawa’s 4-2 victory on Jan. 16. The Senators have won four of five against the Canadiens this season and three straight in Montreal dating to last season.

Colorado Avalanche and the Los Angeles Kings back into contention, and just one point separates the two teams in the crowded Western Conference playoff race. They’ll have plenty of chances to settle the score themselves. The Kings and Avalanche face off twice this week and three times before the end of the season, beginning with Monday’s meeting in Los Angeles as each club tries to solidify its position in the standings. The two worst teams in the West last season, Colorado and Los Angeles have experienced a renaissance behind budding stars.

Although the Avs couldn’t return the favor Sunday, losing 5-2 at Anaheim, both clubs remain in good shape to return to the postseason, with Colorado holding a five-point lead and a game in hand on ninth-place Calgary. Seeking its first playoff berth since 2002, Los Angeles has at least one game in hand on every other West team, and the team was reassured by Saturday’s victory after going 2-4-1 in its previous seven games. U.S. Olympian Jon Quick made 26 saves for his fourth shutout and 38th victory, and the Kings killed all four New York power plays to extend their streak of successful penalty kills to 24.

Just when it looked like the New Jersey Devils had regained their swagger, they lost to one of the league’s worst teams. Trying to put a disappointing defeat behind them, the Devils hope to get their power play going as they meet the Boston Bruins on Monday night. New Jersey had a four-point lead atop the Eastern Conference on Jan. 12, but has since gone 8-13-2 to drop to fourth while relinquishing the Atlantic Division lead to Pittsburgh. The Devils appeared to be turning things around this week by winning two in a row for the first time in two months, including Friday’s 3-1 victory over the Penguins. The following night, however, they lost 4-2 to a last-place New York Islanders team which had dropped four straight, wasting an opportunity to tie for the division lead.

Coach Jacques Lemaire blamed the loss on an ineffective power play. The Devils went 0 for 4 including a 5-on-3 advantage for 49 seconds in the third. They also failed on all four opportunities with the man advantage against Pittsburgh and have one power-play goal in the last four games. New Jersey’s first opportunity to get its power play back on track comes against a Boston team that ranks among the league’s best in penalty killing at 85.7 percent. Ilya Kovalchuk has only one power-play goal in 12 games with New Jersey even though he’s among the NHL leaders with 11, but the veteran winger has still been finding the back of the net regularly.

The Columbus Blue Jackets and Edmonton Oilers have the two worst records in the Western Conference, so it’s hardly surprising that their coaches were unhappy with the players’ efforts in their last games. The clubs conclude their season series Monday night as the Blue Jackets hope to get Rick Nash and Kristian Huselius back in the lineup. Columbus played without Nash, who has a team-high 57 points, and Huselius, third with 49, in a 5-1 home loss to St. Louis on Saturday. The Blue Jackets were outshot 26-11 through two periods as they trailed 3-0.

Edmonton coach Pat Quinn was saying essentially the same thing after his club fell 6-4 to the Maple Leafs in his return to Toronto on Saturday. The Oilers fell behind 5-1 in the second period, allowing three goals in a 1:26 span. Nash missed the last three games with a lower-body injury and Huselius sat out three of the last four with an upper-body injury. Noel believes both may return Monday. Nash has a team-high nine power-play goals and Huselius eight, and they were sorely missed against the Blues. Columbus went 0 for 6 with the man advantage. The Blue Jackets have not had many shots on goal overall in recent games, with 21 in a 2-1 win over Atlanta on Thursday and a season-low 11 in a 6-0 defeat at Los Angeles last Monday.

The Detroit Red Wings understand every game is critical while trying to make the playoffs. Especially one against a team like the Calgary Flames, who are looking to do the same. Having not missed the playoffs since the 1989-90 season, Detroit is doing all it can to prevent the end of that streak. The Red Wings have won four of five and currently hold the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference, one point ahead of ninth-place Calgary.

It was the Flames, however, who rallied to score three unanswered goals in the third period to hand Detroit its most recent loss, 4-2 at Joe Louis Arena on Tuesday. The two-time defending conference champions don’t have to wait long for a shot at avenging that defeat as they open a three-game western Canadian trip Monday in Calgary. The Red Wings should be after a 3-2 overtime home win over Buffalo on Saturday. Pavel Datsyuk and Patrick Eaves scored in regulation, then Brian Rafalski added the winner 31 seconds into overtime for the Red Wings, who’ve won five of seven since the Olympic break. Rafalski had two assists while Datsyuk added a goal Tuesday against the Flames, who’ve won two of the three meetings between the teams this season. Datsyuk has four goals in his last five games overall.

In a season where little has gone right, the New York Knicks have managed to produce a few positive moments here and there. On pace to miss the playoffs for the sixth straight season and on the wrong end of numerous blowout losses in 2009-10, New York is coming off one of its most memorable victories in some time. Bill Walker scored a career-high 23 points and Wilson Chandler added 22 as the Knicks snapped Dallas’ 13-game winning streak with a 128-94 road win Saturday night.

The Knicks shot 56.2 percent and avenged a 50-point loss to the Mavericks in January by winning for the fourth time in 18 games. The victory should give New York some confidence as it tries to win consecutive games in Philadelphia for the first time since April 3-Dec. 17, 2004. David Lee scored 24 points and Chandler had 18 as the Knicks snapped a nine-game road skid against the 76ers with a 93-92 win on Jan. 13. Walker was toiling on the bench with Boston in January, but he’s starting to play well after being traded to New York last month in a deal that sent disgruntled guard Nate Robinson to the Celtics. The second-year swingman is averaging 11.4 points in 11 games with his new team, and he’s scored 22.0 per game while shooting 17 of 25 in his last two contests.

It was a rough week for the Boston Celtics. A visit from the lowly Detroit Pistons to open a brief home stretch could help them get back on track. Coming off another disappointing loss to the top team in the Eastern Conference, the Celtics look to bounce against the struggling Pistons on Monday night. Boston shot 40.0 percent and allowed LeBron James to score 24 of his 30 points in the second half of a 104-93 loss at Cleveland on Sunday. It was the Celtics’ second consecutive decisive loss to the East leaders, and it concluded a six-day stretch where the Atlantic Division leaders went 1-3 after winning four in a row.

Though the aging Celtics have a comfortable division lead, they are fourth in the East, 10 games behind the Cavaliers and looking like a team that’s playing tired, rather than inspired. Though Boston’s big three of Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen are in their 30s, they are still some of the NBA’s top all-around players. Allen scored 20 points while Pierce and Garnett each had 18 on Sunday. As a group, however, Boston’s struggles have come on both ends of the court. Boston has been held to 93 or fewer points in four of five games, and it’s allowed an average of 106.0 in its last three.

The Denver Nuggets last swept a road trip of at least four games five seasons ago. The Nuggets can accomplish that feat again and extend their win streak to seven Monday night as they go for their first season sweep of the Houston Rockets in 32 years. Denver owns the longest current win streak in the Western Conference and is one-half game ahead of Dallas in the race for the No. 2 seed. The Nuggets are three games behind the Los Angeles Lakers. With Adrian Dantley filling in as coach while George Karl undergoes cancer treatments, Denver has trailed at halftime in every game of this trip. The Nuggets’ latest rally featured one of their best fourth quarters of the season.

Denver was down six at the half and tied after three periods Saturday, but scored 40 points in the fourth and won 125-108 at Memphis. Reserve J.R. Smith had 16 of his 30 in the final period, which the Nuggets opened on a 12-0 run. Four other reserves combined for 27 points, and backup point guard Anthony Carter added seven assists in less than 17 minutes. The Nuggets last swept a four-game trip April 2-8, 2005. Smith averaged 21.5 points as Denver won the first two matchups of the season with the Rockets, whom the Nuggets have not swept since going 3-0 in 1977-78. Carmelo Anthony missed Denver’s last two visits to Houston, where he has had his share of problems. His 19.2 scoring average at Toyota Center is his worst in any arena and his 38.8 field-goal percentage is his second worst.

A four-game road trip seemed to wear the Utah Jazz down. Their schedule, though, hasn’t been nearly as grueling as the Washington Wizards’. In danger of losing three straight for the second time this season, the Jazz return home Monday night to face a Wizards team that will continue a grueling stretch. Utah has lost back-to-back games for the first time since a season-worst three-game skid from Dec. 31-Jan. 4. After winning their previous four, the Jazz stumbled down the stretch of their trip. Despite shooting 57.9 percent from 3-point range, Utah lost 119-111 to Oklahoma City on Sunday night in a matchup of teams jockeying for playoff position in the Western Conference. The Jazz are in fourth place, one-half game ahead of the Thunder. Injuries certainly didn’t help Utah’s cause. Center Mehmet Okur and forward Andrei Kirilenko were missing from the starting lineup, and the pair are questionable for this game.

Okur was held out after playing a season-high 41 minutes in a 95-87 loss to Milwaukee on Friday night. Kirilenko left that game in the second half. Okur and Kirilenko are the team’s third- and fourth-leading scorers, respectively, combining for 25.0 points and 11.4 rebounds per game. Paul Millsap started for Okur and C.J. Miles took Kirilenko’s spot. Wesley Matthews, who has started 13 straight games since Ronnie Brewer was traded to Memphis on Feb. 18, is coming off an outstanding game. The undrafted rookie guard made six 3-pointers and scored a season-high 29 points. Matthews is shooting 56.0 percent from beyond the arc over his last 11 games. He poses a tough challenge for a perimeter defense on a team that has gotten little rest.

After enduring a rare losing streak, the Los Angeles Lakers believe a road win over a Pacific Division rival is just what they needed to regain their confidence. The Western Conference-leading Lakers look to build on that victory and continue their dominance over the Golden State Warriors on Monday night at Oracle Arena. Los Angeles has looked poised to repeat as the NBA champion for much of the season before a three-game skid earlier this month - its first in more than two years - seemed to knock the team off course. The Lakers snapped the losing streak with an uninspiring two-point win over slumping Toronto on Tuesday, but were still in need of a more impressive victory to reclaim their swagger.

Los Angeles got just that with Friday’s 102-96 win at Phoenix, which entered with one of the league’s best home records at 24-8. All five Lakers starters scored at least 15 and the team withstood a late rally to end a four-game road slide. Kobe Bryant was slowed by an injured hand but still finished with team highs of 21 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. The 12-time All-Star was encouraged by the team’s physical presence on defense and ability to hold the league’s highest-scoring team more than 13 points below its average. The Lakers, three games ahead of Denver atop the West, will face another defensive test with a game against the high-flying Warriors, who average 107.4 points.

The banged-up New Orleans Hornets are struggling through their worst stretch of a once-promising season. Perhaps a matchup with the Los Angeles Clippers can give their confidence a boost. In danger of losing an eighth straight road game, the Hornets look to extend a 12-game winning streak against the lowly Los Angeles Clippers on Monday night. New Orleans is 7-14 since losing Chris Paul to a knee injury. The three-time All Star may be a week away from returning, but it’s too late for the Hornets to make a playoff push. Trailing eighth-place Portland by 7 1/2 games in the Western Conference, New Orleans has virtually taken itself out of the postseason race with its poor play. A loss to Los Angeles would give the Hornets eight straight road defeats for the first time since the 2004-05 season.

New Orleans has lost nine of 11 overall, allowing 108.9 points per game. The Hornets, though, have been much tougher defensively against the Clippers, surrendering an average of 90.2 points during their winning streak against them. The Clippers have lost seven straight overall entering their final contest with the Hornets this season. Still, even this might be a matchup too tough for an injury-riddled New Orleans team to overcome. The Hornets have dressed the league minimum eight players the past two games, including a 120-106 loss to Phoenix on Sunday night. Peja Stojakovic has missed three straight games and will miss at least another 10 days, and James Posey has been out the past two games due to flulike symptoms. Posey’s status is uncertain.

The Charlotte Bobcats have defeated two playoff contenders in the last week, but just as important may be their improved play against teams that are among the worst in the NBA. The Bobcats look to win their fifth straight and keep pace in a tight Eastern Conference playoff race when they host the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday night. Charlotte is among five teams fighting for one of the final four postseason spots in the East. The Bobcats are tied with Toronto and Miami for the No. 6 seed—two games behind fifth-place Milwaukee and narrowly ahead of ninth-place Chicago. Led by outstanding defense, the Bobcats, who have never reached the playoffs, have looked like a legitimate threat following home wins over the Los Angeles Lakers and Heat in the last week.

After a five-point win over the Heat on Tuesday, the Bobcats defeated the 76ers 102-87 on Wednesday, leading by as many as 29. The victories over the Warriors and 76ers were important for the Bobcats, who at times have struggled against teams with losing records. They’ve dropped two games to New Jersey and fell 98-94 to the Clippers on Feb. 22. Charlotte kept up its defensive pressure Wednesday, forcing 21 turnovers and holding Philadelphia to 14 points in the third quarter.

With the ultimate goal being to win the franchise’s first championship, Cleveland Cavaliers coach Mike Brown took advantage of a light portion of the schedule to give LeBron James a couple of games off. The Philadelphia 76ers probably wish Brown would decide to rest the superstar a little longer. While Antawn Jamison will sit out, James is expected to play for the first time in a week Friday night as the reigning league MVP looks to help the Cavaliers beat the 76ers for the eighth time in nine meetings. James missed the previous two games after twisting his right ankle in last Friday’s 99-92 win over Detroit. The injury wasn’t considered serious, but the Cavaliers decided to be extra cautious and avoid rushing him back. Brown said if this were the playoffs, James, who leads the league with 30.0 points per game, would be on the floor.

One of the reasons Brown decided to give James a rest was because of an extended break in the schedule. The Cavs haven’t played since defeating San Antonio 97-95 on Monday. While Cleveland managed to win for the first time in 10 games since 2007-08 without James on Monday, the victory came with a price as Jamison left late in the third quarter with an apparent left knee injury. An MRI revealed no serious problem, and it was later revealed Jamison has a cyst behind his left knee that is filled with fluid.

The Boston Celtics may be cruising to a third straight Atlantic Division title, but re-establishing their home-court advantage before the playoffs start might be a priority. The Celtics look to rebound from one of their worst home performances of the season Friday night when they host the last-place Indiana Pacers. Boston is atop the Atlantic by eight games on second-place Toronto with 19 remaining in the regular season. The Celtics have built that cushion despite an 18-12 record at TD Garden after going 35-6 there in each of the last two seasons. Boston is 7-8 at home in the past two months, including Wednesday’s 111-91 defeat to Memphis in a listless performance that saw the Celtics get outrebounded 48-23. The loss matched their most lopsided of the season, which came at home to Cleveland on Feb. 25.

The Celtics could use increased production from Paul Pierce, the team leader with 17.5 points per game. The swingman is averaging 12.5 points and shooting 34.1 percent from the field over the last four games. Pierce had 21 points in a 103-94 win over Indiana on Dec. 22 as the Celtics extended their home winning streak in the series to four. The only other matchup this season also was the Pacers’ lone victory in the last five meetings, 113-104 on Nov. 14.

The Miami Heat and the Chicago Bulls could be without some key players for their matchup Friday night. The latest injury to befall Chicago could have the most significant impact on the Eastern Conference playoff race. Already short-handed, the reeling Bulls might be without All-Star point guard Derrick Rose on Friday night when they visit the Miami Heat, who are looking for their fifth straight home win. This showdown for playoff position in the East was already shaping up to be a battle of attrition before Rose got hurt in the first quarter Thursday night. The Bulls’ leading scorer and playmaker sprained his left wrist falling to the floor after a midair collision with Orlando’s Dwight Howard on a drive to the basket.

Rose was taken to the locker room for examination and didn’t return. The Bulls said X-rays were negative. Rose is scheduled to have an MRI on Friday in Miami, after which the team will determine whether he can play against the Heat. Without Rose for most of the game Thursday, the Bulls fell 111-82 in Orlando for their sixth straight defeat.

The Memphis Grizzlies have put together a franchise-record winning streak on the road. Matching that success at home, however, has been much more difficult. They’ll try to open a three-game homestand with a third straight victory Friday night when they face the struggling New York Knicks. The Grizzlies set a team record with their fifth straight road win by beating New Orleans on March 3, and stretched that run to seven with an impressive 111-91 win over Atlantic Division-leading Boston on Wednesday. Memphis dominated throughout, shooting 55.0 percent and outrebounding the Celtics 48-23. That goal is reaching the playoffs for the first time in four seasons, and Memphis is ninth in the Western Conference, chasing Portland and San Antonio for the last two postseason positions.

The Grizzlies, winners of four of five overall, can make a serious case for a playoff spot if they can carry their road success back to FedEx Forum, where they’re 19-14. Memphis, which is opening a three-game homestand, won its last game there Monday, beating league-worst New Jersey 107-101 to snap an eight-game home losing streak. Rudy Gay, second on the team with 20.0 points per game, is looking to build on his superb performance from Wednesday, connecting on 10 of 18 shots for 28 points and eight rebounds.

The Oklahoma City Thunder are trying to earn a spot in the postseason for the first time in five years. A solid stretch run could have them hosting a first-round series. Oklahoma City looks for another dominant defensive effort and a fourth straight win Friday night when it hosts a New Jersey Nets team with the league’s worst offense. The Thunder are tied with Phoenix for fifth in the Western Conference, 2 1/2 games behind Utah for the fourth seed and home-court advantage in the first round. The Oklahoma City franchise hasn’t appeared in the postseason since the Seattle SuperSonics went 52-30 and won the Northwest Division in 2004-05.

Oklahoma City has won 15 of 18 behind a defense that is among the league’s best in points allowed and field goal percentage. The Thunder improved to 23-2 when holding teams to 94 points or fewer after limiting the Hornets to 57 in the final three quarters. In the final 12 minutes of a 105-89 victory at New Jersey on Dec. 28, Oklahoma City held the Nets to 13 points. It would appear the Thunder have a good chance of winning five straight at home for the first time since Feb. 14-March 4, 2007, as they face a New Jersey team shooting 42.6 percent and averaging 90.7 points - both worst in the NBA.

Some had predicted that the Detroit Pistons and Washington Wizards would be contending for playoff berths this season. Instead, both teams are near the bottom of the Eastern Conference. The struggling clubs will try to earn a rare win this month at the expense of each other Friday night at the Palace of Auburn Hills. Detroit had made the playoffs in eight straight seasons heading into 2009-10, but injuries in part dealt an early blow to the Pistons’ hopes. No player has appeared in all 64 games, and Richard Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince and Ben Gordon have been absent for extended periods. One of their stalwarts through this injury-plagued campaign, third-year guard Rodney Stuckey, has missed the past two games after collapsing on the bench during a loss in Cleveland on March 5.

Following extensive cardiac tests Wednesday, doctors told Stuckey— averaging a career-best 17.1 points per game—that he can resume exercise, but there is no timetable for his return to game action. In their first game without their second-leading scorer, the Pistons snapped a six-game slide with an overtime victory over Houston on Sunday in the opener of a three-game homestand. Detroit, though, couldn’t rally from a 20-point halftime deficit in a 115-104 loss to Utah on Wednesday.

The Denver Nuggets have scored at an even higher rate than usual recently. Most impressive about the stretch is how much depth they are showing. The Nuggets look to win their fifth straight when they visit the New Orleans Hornets on Friday night. Denver, among the league leaders with 107.7 points per game, has averaged 117.3 during its winning streak after being held to fewer than 90 in back-to-back losses to the Los Angeles Lakers and Phoenix. The Nuggets opened a four-game road trip with a 110-102 win over Minnesota on Wednesday, with six players finishing in double figures. Carmelo Anthony, who scored 30 or more in the previous three games, shot 6 of 16 from the field for 19 points, but he was helped by his teammates as Chauncey Billups scored 25, Nene had 17 and J.R. Smith added 15.

Smith, averaging 15.2 points, is scoring 18.8 per game during the winning streak. He hit three 3-pointers in the third quarter, when Denver outscored the Timberwolves 31-19. The improved play of Smith and Chris Andersen, who is averaging 11.3 points over the last four games, has helped make up for the absence of Kenyon Martin, who is out indefinitely while undergoing plasma therapy on his left knee. Martin is averaging 11.8 points and a team-high 9.6 rebounds. The Nuggets are looking for their second victory in three games against the Hornets after recording a 116-110 overtime win Jan. 23.

Less than two days after finding out Tony Parker would not return in the regular season, Manu Ginobili said the rest of the San Antonio Spurs needed to step up their games. Ginobili has definitely done his part. Expected to start for the third straight game Friday night at Target Center, Ginobili will try to help San Antonio win its 11th in a row over the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Spurs learned Monday that Parker, the team’s second-leading scorer at 16.5 points per game, would not need surgery for a broken right hand suffered in Saturday’s 102-92 victory at Memphis, but he would be out until at least the start of the playoffs.

Ginobili has done plenty recently at Minnesota, averaging 27.6 points in his last five games there. In a 117-99 home win Dec. 29 in these teams’ only meeting of the season, the Spurs posted their 10th consecutive victory over the Timberwolves as Ginobili had 14 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds. The Timberwolves haven’t covered anyone well lately, allowing 107.2 points per game while dropping 13 of 14. Minnesota lost its seventh straight overall and seventh in a row at home Wednesday, 110-102 to Denver. Before opening a four-game trip Sunday in Sacramento, Minnesota will try to snap a five-game home losing streak to San Antonio.

The Milwaukee Bucks knew they had three tough games to begin their homestand. Though they won the first two, the third may prove to be the most difficult. The Bucks will try to cool off the similarly red-hot Utah Jazz on Friday night in a matchup of teams on four-game win streaks. Milwaukee is one of the NBA’s hottest teams, winning 13 of 16 to surge into fifth place in the Eastern Conference. The Bucks have matched their win total from last season. There may have been doubters before this four-game homestand started with matchups against division leaders Cleveland and Boston. The Bucks took advantage of LeBron James’ absence to win 92-85 over the Cavaliers on Saturday and beat the Celtics 86-84 on Tuesday.

The latest contender standing in Milwaukee’s way is Utah, shooting an NBA-best 49.1 percent and averaging 117.8 points during a 5-1 stretch. Bogut was the catalyst Tuesday with 25 points and 17 rebounds, and is averaging 17.4 and 11.4 over the last 11 games. He’s also been a major factor on defense, ranking second in the league with 2.5 blocks per game. The Jazz, meanwhile, have opened a four-game trip with two wins to improve to 10-2 on the road since Jan. 20.

Another late game-winner from Kobe Bryant didn’t make the Los Angeles Lakers feel much better, and this may be their last chance for a while to get a true boost of confidence. Before a very easy stretch of the schedule, the Lakers desperately want a strong all-around performance Friday night when they visit a well-rested Phoenix Suns team which has been playing well. While Phoenix has won 14 of 18 to move into a virtual tie for fifth place in the West, Los Angeles has split its last 10 to see its lead atop the conference dwindle to 2 1/2 games over red-hot Dallas. Bryant has been very critical of his team, particularly on defense, and referred to the Lakers’ most recent effort as “garbage” after a 109-107 home win over Toronto on Tuesday. It was nearly their fourth consecutive loss, but Bryant’s 17-foot fallaway with 1.9 seconds left provided the difference.

The Suns’ only four losses in the past six weeks were to teams among the West’s top eight. The Lakers’ next three games after this one are against the West’s worst teams - Golden State, Sacramento and Minnesota - followed by a matchup with a last-place team from the East - Washington. Opening a three-game trip, the Lakers look to avoid losing five consecutive road games for the first time since March 4-15, 2007. Los Angeles has lost two straight in Phoenix, giving up 118 points in each.

After Tyreke Evans’ first career triple-double sparked the Sacramento Kings to victory, coach Paul Westphal raved about how the rookie guard has a chance to alter the direction of the franchise. The Portland Trail Blazers know all about that kind of impact player. After riding former rookie of the year Brandon Roy to their fifth win in six games, the Blazers look to continue the surge and tighten their hold on a playoff spot Friday night when they visit Evans and the Kings. The fourth overall pick in the draft, Evans appears to be the leading candidate to be named the league’s top rookie with averages of 20.3 points, 5.0 rebounds and 5.5 assists. The 6-foot-6 20-year-old out of Memphis had 19 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists Wednesday, helping Sacramento snap a three-game losing streak with a 113-90 victory over Toronto.

Roy was a runaway rookie of the year in 2006-07, when he averaged 16.8 points, 4.4 rebounds and 4.0 assists. In his first three seasons, he transformed the Blazers from a perennial lottery team to last year’s Northwest Division co-champs. Though injuries have decimated Portland this season, the team is still in playoff position - largely because of Roy.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have managed to build a modest lead in the Atlantic Division. It might not hold up if they can’t find a way to solve Martin Brodeur and the New Jersey Devils. Following their first defeat since the Olympic break, the Penguins look to avoid another loss to the inconsistent Devils on Friday night. Pittsburgh won its first four games after captain Sidney Crosby’s overtime goal against the United States gave Canada a win in the gold-medal game at the Olympics. The Penguins, though, had their run snapped Thursday, losing 4-3 in overtime to Carolina in the opener of a five-game road trip.

Pittsburgh, which leads the Devils by four points in the Atlantic, will now play two games in six days at the Prudential Center including a rematch Wednesday. It’s been a one-sided season series, though, with New Jersey winning all four games. Brodeur, a teammate of Crosby’s in Vancouver, has started all of those contests, surrendering two goals. Brodeur isn’t expected to get much rest down the stretch for the Devils, and has allowed one goal or less in six of his last seven games against Pittsburgh. Crosby has 11 goals and six assists over his last 11 games, but he has not found the back of the net this season against New Jersey. Penguins center Evgeni Malkin has been held without a point in three straight contests versus the Devils.

With 99 points and a 14-point lead in the Eastern Conference, Washington has enough leeway to rest some of its regulars while trying to break in new players. That plan, though, isn’t necessarily sitting well with those who are missing time.

On Monday night, Tomas Fleischmann was left off the lineup for the first time all season as the Capitals lost 4-3 in a shootout with Dallas, snapping a franchise-record 13-game home winning streak. Two days later, he scored in overtime as Washington bounced back at home with a 4-3 victory over Carolina. Fleischmann was smiling when he mode those comments, but it highlights the tough position Boudreau is in on a team overloaded with talent. Jason Chimera and Eric Fehr, who had not been rested since Jan. 2, took their turns sitting out versus the Hurricanes. Boudreau is trying to work in new players Joe Corvo, Scott Walker and Eric Belanger. On March 3, Corvo and Walker were acquired from Carolina and Belanger was picked up in a deal with Minnesota. Belanger assisted on Fleischmann game winner.

With Ryan Miller playing like an Olympic star, the Buffalo Sabres are well on their way toward ending their postseason drought. The Sabres, however, could give their goaltender a rest as they open a tough stretch Friday night at home against the struggling Minnesota Wild. Buffalo hasn’t reached the playoffs since winning the Northeast title in 2006-07, finishing five points shy of the postseason in 2007-08 and three short last season. The Sabres should have more than enough to get back into the postseason as they lead Ottawa by two points for the division’s top spot with three games in hand and 17 to play.

The next two weeks, though, will be crucial. Buffalo will play six times in the next 10 nights, including a five-game road trip that begins Saturday against Detroit. Beginning with that trek, the Sabres will play 11 of their final 16 games away from home. That makes rest all the more important for Miller, who has 33 wins and is second in the NHL with a 2.15 goals-against average. Despite a 1.95 GAA during Buffalo’s three-game winning streak, he’s expected to sit in place of Patrick Lalime against the Wild, paving the way for the East Lansing, Mich. native to start against the Red Wings. Miller also gave up three goals in a 10:32 span bridging the second and third periods in Minnesota before the Sabres rallied for a 4-3 overtime win on Oct. 23, 2008.

Respective late-season swoons have the New York Rangers and Atlanta Thrashers fading from the playoff picture. The Rangers hope to avoid a season high-tying fifth straight loss Friday night when they face the Thrashers, who will look to end their four-game skid and sweep the season series from New York for the first time since 2002-03. New York is in ninth place in the Eastern Conference, five points behind Boston for the final postseason spot - and a likely first-round matchup against Alex Ovechkin -led Washington. Atlanta is one point behind the Rangers, and tied with Tampa Bay for 10th.

The Rangers dropped five in a row Dec. 9-16, a stretch that included a 2-1 shootout defeat to Atlanta. Their latest skid grew to four Wednesday after a 6-3 loss at Atlantic Division rival New Jersey. Vinny Prospal, Erik Christensen and Brandon Prust helped the Rangers erase three one-goal deficits, but Henrik Lundqvist gave up a pair of late second-period goals to put the game out of reach. The Swedish Olympian, who had a career goals-against average of 1.75 against the Devils coming in, stopped 12 of 17 shots before being replaced by Alex Auld with less than five minutes to play in the middle frame.

Battling for home-ice advantage in the opening round of the playoffs, the Los Angeles Kings have struggled somewhat of late. A matchup with the Dallas Stars should give them a good chance to get back on track. Anze Kopitar looks to set a personal scoring record while helping the Kings continue their dominance of the Stars on Friday night. Los Angeles is fifth in the Western Conference, two points back of fourth-place Phoenix. The Kings have a game in hand with 16 remaining, but need to get back to playing well in order to beat out the Coyotes for that spot.

Los Angeles went 13-2-1 from Jan. 14-March 2, but have since dropped three of four. The Kings managed to pick up a point in their last game, a 3-2 overtime loss at Chicago on Wednesday. One of Los Angeles’ goals as well as an assist came from Kopitar, who has five goals and four assists during a career high-tying eight-game point streak - his second such run in the last 17 games.

Matchups at the Honda Center have always given the Nashville Predators trouble. A deflating loss to the Western Conference’s top team certainly won’t help their confidence entering another contest there. The playoff-hopeful Predators look to put aside a disappointing defeat when they visit the struggling Anaheim Ducks on Friday night. Nashville blew a 4-2 lead in the final period of an 8-5 loss to San Jose on Thursday night. The Predators - 1-1 on a four-game road trip that concludes Sunday in Los Angeles - fell apart after dominating the first two periods of what could be a playoff preview.

Though Nashville is in playoff position, it is hardly guaranteed of returning to the postseason following a one-year absence. The Predators have fallen into a tie with Calgary for seventh in the West, leading ninth-place Detroit by one point. Losing to teams such as the Ducks won’t help Nashville’s cause. The Predators are 4-14-3 all-time at Anaheim, and have allowed 16 goals - eight on the power play - while dropping three of the last four matchups. They fell 4-0 at the Honda Center on Nov. 5, and also lost 3-2 to the Ducks at home Jan. 9 to fall to 1-2-0 in the season series.

While the Columbus Blue Jackets have long faded out of contention for the playoffs, the same appears to be happening to the Atlanta Thrashers. The Thrashers seek to end a three-game slide Thursday night when they visit the Blue Jackets, who hope to have superstar Rick Nash back in the lineup. Columbus won’t be returning to the playoffs thanks to a dismal season in which coach Ken Hitchcock was fired Feb. 3 and reigning Calder Trophy winner Steve Mason has struggled to post a 3.15 goals-against average after finishing 2008-09 at 2.29.

Atlanta, which has also made the playoffs only once in 2007, seemed to be building for the future when it traded Ilya Kovalchuk to New Jersey on Feb. 4. The Thrashers, though, got back into contention with a 4-0-2 stretch from Feb. 6-March 4. That was right before this current slide in which Atlanta has scored three goals and fallen four points behind Boston, which holds the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The Thrashers fell 2-1 at home to Nashville on Tuesday. The Thrashers fell behind 2-0 after one period and finished 0 for 2 on the power play, extending their drought to 10 chances with the man advantage during this skid.
