The St. Louis Cardinals are surely happy to be home following a difficult road trip, especially with Adam Wainwright set to take the mound. Wainwright looks to improve to 6-0 in as many starts at Busch Stadium as the Cardinals return to interleague play to face the struggling Seattle Mariners on Monday night. St. Louis finds itself chasing first-place Cincinnati in the NL Central following its 1-5 trip, which featured offensive problems and shaky pitching. The team hit .227 on the trip, with sluggers Albert Pujols and Matt Holliday combining to go 6 for 44 with three RBIs. Pujols had all three RBIs in Sunday’s 7-5 loss at Arizona. He helped erase a three-run deficit in the ninth, but the Cardinals lost in the bottom of the inning on a walk-off home run by Chris Young.

Wainwright also had problems on the trip, walking a season-high five and matching a season high by allowing four runs in six innings of a 4-3 loss to the Dodgers on Wednesday. The right-hander has been consistently brilliant at home, and he notched his first career shutout there June 4 with a two-hitter in an 8-0 win over Milwaukee. He’s 5-0 with a 1.62 ERA and two complete games at Busch Stadium this year. The Cardinals have won nine of 13 in St. Louis, and they swept Seattle in the Mariners’ only previous visit from July 2-4, 2004. Seattle is scuffling on its road trip. The last-place Mariners are 9-22 on the road, and they had lost five straight before avoiding a sweep at San Diego with Sunday’s 4-2 win. Milton Bradley’s two-run home run was just the third homer in 10 games for the Mariners, who rank last in the majors with 35 home runs. Seattle will have Luke French on the mound for his first start in the majors this season. The left-hander replaces Ian Snell in the rotation after Snell allowed eight runs in 1 2-3 innings of a 12-2 loss at Texas on Wednesday. French gave up four runs in 5 1-3 innings of relief that night.

After their best road trip in nearly 50 years, the Los Angeles Angels are hoping to carry that success into their first home game in 15 days. A matchup with the Milwaukee Brewers might help. Before heading back on the road again, the Angels start a three-game set Monday night against the Brewers, losers in 10 of 14 on the road. Los Angeles has overcome a slow start by winning 15 of its last 19 and used a 4-1 finish to its previous homestand as a springboard into its season-high 14-game trek. The Angels were 11-3 over those two weeks - the franchise’s most wins on one trip since 1962 - and capped that run with their first sweep at Dodger Stadium in 14 seasons of interleague play. Mike Napoli’s eighth-inning homer proved the difference in Sunday’s 6-5 win, and Hideki Matsui added to his stellar month by going 3 for 4 with two RBIs. Matsui is hitting .417 with 12 RBIs in June, while Erick Aybar has batted .424 over his last 14 games. Howie Kendrick was 7 for 14 in the three games against the Dodgers and has 18 of his 41 RBIs since May 29.

First, the Angels will try to earn their eighth victory in 10 home games, and help Joe Saunders win a season-high third consecutive start. After giving up seven runs at home against Seattle on May 30, Saunders yielded one in each of his two outings on the road trip. The left-hander recorded his second complete game this season, scattering seven hits in a 7-1 win over Oakland on Wednesday. Saunders is 4-1 with a 2.63 ERA over his last seven starts but 1-5 with a 6.34 ERA this season at home. In his first start against Milwaukee, he’ll face a team that’s batted .239 during an 11-21 stretch and .194 over its last eight contests. The Brewers had three hits in Sunday’s 7-2 home loss to Texas but two were home runs from Prince Fielder, born in nearby Ontario, Calif. Fielder has never played in Anaheim but had a strong series earlier this season at Dodger Stadium, going 5 for 12 with one home run and four RBIs. Another California native, Randy Wolf, is 0-1 with a 6.35 ERA in two career matchups against the Angels - both at Dodger Stadium - and 0-2 with a 10.32 ERA in two starts this month.

The San Diego Padres’ Jon Garland and the Toronto Blue Jays’ Shaun Marcum both received poor run support at the beginning of this season but rebounded with dominant stretches. The two starters have experienced their share of frustration this month. The good news for Garland and Marcum is they have a chance to break out of their respective slumps in Monday night’s opener of a three-game series at Petco Park. Garland was given two runs over his first three outings and started 0-2. He bounced back with a six-game win streak and a 1.73 ERA over his next eight starts. The right-hander’s run ended June 5 in Philadelphia as he gave up six runs and 10 hits over seven innings of a 6-2 loss. He then came out on the wrong end of a 3-0 defeat Thursday against the Mets as his teammates managed only one hit in the finale of a doubleheader.

Garland is hoping for better support against the Blue Jays, a team he’s 11-2 against in 16 career starts. Marcum, meanwhile, got nine runs while going 0-1 over his first five starts, but went 5-0 with a 1.85 ERA in six May starts. This month, he’s 0-2 with an 8.03 ERA. The right-hander gave up five runs and 10 hits over a season-high 8 1-3 innings June 2 against Tampa Bay but followed with an even worse outing versus the Rays on Wednesday. Marcum was tagged for seven runs and 10 hits over four innings of a 10-1 defeat - his first road loss this season. Given his team’s recent hitting struggles, Marcum might not have much room for error in his first start against San Diego. He could be in for a tough duel with Garland, who is 3-0 with a 1.15 ERA at home this season. The Blue Jays have batted .163 and been outscored 41-13 over their last seven games. Adam Lind’s 4-for-33 slump over the last 10 contests has played a part, and Vernon Wells is 2 for 18 during the team’s 1-5 start to their nine-game road trip.

Interleague play has done nothing to stop the losses from piling up for the Baltimore Orioles, a trend the San Francisco Giants hope continues for at least three more days. The Giants look to hand the woeful Orioles their ninth consecutive road defeat as the teams meet Monday night for the first time in six years. The Orioles have cemented their status as the worst team in the majors by losing 15 of 17 overall, including an 0-6 performance against Toronto and the Yankees during their last road trip. They totaled 25 runs and two home runs on their recent 2-7 homestand, which concluded with three straight losses to the New York Mets. The Orioles are 1-5 against NL foes after going 11-7 in interleague play each of the last two years. Samuel may wish his struggling lineup still had Aubrey Huff, who played for Baltimore from 2007-09 and will be facing the Orioles for the first time since they traded him to Detroit for a minor league pitcher Aug. 17.

Huff signed with the Giants in the offseason. Following a slow start, the veteran has hit .400 with six homers and 13 RBIs in his last 16 games. He had two homers and four RBIs in Sunday’s 6-2 win over Oakland to help complete San Francisco’s three-game sweep. The Giants have won 12 of 17 overall, including eight of 10 at home, thanks in part of a resurgent offense that has scored six or more runs eight times in 15 games. Starting pitching remains San Francisco’s biggest strength, and the 3.19 ERA posted by Giants starters leads the majors. Jonathan Sanchez takes his turn, looking to improve on an inefficient outing at Cincinnati on Wednesday. The left-hander needed 93 pitches to get through five innings, allowing three runs in a 6-3 defeat. Miguel Tejada, one of the few Orioles hitters who has faced Sanchez, is 0 for 7 against the southpaw. Chris Tillman is slated to pitch for Baltimore, and he’s coming off a promising outing Wednesday against the Yankees. The 22-year-old fell to 2-7 in his career after a 4-2 defeat, but he held New York to three runs in six innings.
