The Florida Marlins didn’t fare well against a team with playoff aspirations. A matchup with the lowly Pittsburgh Pirates could provide better results. The Marlins look to snap a three-game losing streak Monday at PNC Park, where they open a four-game series versus the major league-worst Pirates. After winning a season high-tying four in a row - including three against Washington to begin its 10-game trip - Florida was swept by NL Central-leading Cincinnati over the weekend, losing Sunday’s series finale 2-0. The Marlins, who have dropped eight of 12 to fall 10 1/2 games behind NL East-leading Atlanta, went 0 for 27 with runners in scoring position against the Reds.

Uggla wasn’t successful in the Marlins’ last visit to Pittsburgh, going 0 for 11 with three strikeouts as they were swept in a three-game set April 20-22, 2009. Florida averaged 2.0 runs and batted .191 during that series. With the Marlins scoring just six times over the weekend, rookie right fielder Mike Stanton will likely remain in the fifth spot in the order to get more RBI opportunities. Stanton is batting .583 with five doubles, four homers and eight RBIs on the trip. Stanton will get his first look at James McDonald, who is trying to rebound from his first loss with Pittsburgh. After going six scoreless innings against Colorado in his Pirates debut Aug. 5, the right-hander struck out six and allowed four runs over 4 2-3 innings of Wednesday’s 8-5 loss at San Diego.

Recent managerial changes have sparked the Baltimore Orioles and the Seattle Mariners. The newfound success may already be proving fleeting for one of these last-place clubs. The Orioles look to avoid their first three-game slide under Buck Showalter when they open a three-game series with the Mariners on Monday night. The Orioles and Mariners are at the bottom of their respective divisions with little hope of finishing the season anywhere else. Both clubs opted to change their managers in midseason. Baltimore fired Dave Trembley on June 4, replacing him with Showalter earlier this month following an interim stint by Juan Samuel. The Orioles started 9-2 under Showalter before dropping consecutive games at Tampa Bay over the weekend, including a 3-2 defeat Sunday.

Showalter didn’t take much solace in Baltimore’s 3-3 trip - an improvement on the club’s AL-worst 17-43 road record. The Mariners also put together a strong stretch after Daren Brown replaced Don Wakamatsu on an interim basis last Monday. Seattle has won four of six under Brown, but is coming off its most lopsided defeat since the change, a 9-1 loss at Cleveland on Sunday. The Mariners may have a hard time at the plate again Monday as the Orioles turn to Brad Bergesen, who is looking to build on the best performance of his brief career. The 24-year-old right-hander threw a two-hitter - his second complete game in two big-league seasons - in a 3-1 win at Cleveland on Wednesday.

Johnny Damon became a hated figure among New York Yankees fans after his key grand slam for Boston in the 2004 AL championship series. Those fans eventually came over to Damon’s side during his four seasons with the club, culminating in a strong performance in the postseason last year to help the storied franchise win its 27th championship. Damon makes his return to the Bronx on Monday night with the Detroit Tigers, who will face their former center fielder Curtis Granderson for the first time in the opener of a four-game series. New York beat Philadelphia in six games in the World Series, and Damon was a key figure. He went 8 for 22 and scored a team-high six runs in the Fall Classic to earn his second ring along with the 2004 one with the Red Sox.

The Yankees, though, acquired Granderson from Detroit in a three-team deal in December that sent Austin Jackson to the Tigers. That left little room for Damon, and the two-time All-Star is now splitting time between left field and designated hitter with the Tigers. Damon signed a $8 million, one-year contract with Detroit after New York opted to let him go. Granderson missed the Yankees’ trip to Detroit from May 10-13 due to a groin injury so this is the first time he will face his former teammates. He’s endured an injury-plagued season, and enters this series in a 7-for-45 slump over his last 15 games.

The Atlanta Braves have enjoyed a string of quality starts this month. Right-hander Tommy Hanson would like to see another offensive outburst from his teammates.Looking for his first victory since July 3, Hanson gets the ball Monday when the NL East-leading Braves go for their fourth straight series win at Turner Field as they complete a four-game set versus the Dodgers. With Jair Jurrjens pitching seven innings of one-run ball, the Braves tagged Dodgers pitching for a season high-tying 16 hits Sunday to win 13-1. Atlanta’s starters, though, have carried the club in August, going 6-2 with a 1.58 ERA. The Braves were batting .218 and averaging 3.6 runs this month prior to Sunday.

Despite posting a 2.03 ERA and holding opponents to a .213 batting average in his last seven starts, Hanson is 0-3 in that span. Atlanta has averaged 3.1 runs during this stretch, and the bullpen hasn’t done much to help the right-hander. Hanson was in line for the victory Wednesday at Houston after giving up one run and two hits over seven innings, but closer Billy Wagner blew his third save in the right-hander’s last five starts. Hanson is 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA in two career starts versus the Dodgers. He allowed two runs in six innings of a 9-3 win in Los Angeles on June 5. Chad Billingsley, who lost that matchup after yielding three runs over six innings, has allowed just five runs in his last five starts. The right-hander, however, is 2-2 during this span as Los Angeles has backed him with five total runs - only one in his last three outings.

The Texas Rangers and the Tampa Bay Rays could be headed for an October showdown. For now, the mound matchup in Monday’s series opener should be more than enough to give the game a postseason feel. Two of baseball’s premier left-handers, Cliff Lee and David Price, face each other for the first time at Tropicana Field as the Rangers and Rays kick off their potential playoff preview. The two biggest leads in baseball’s playoff races belong to Texas - up 8 1/2 games on the Angels in the AL West - and Tampa Bay, which boasts a five-game edge over Boston for the wild card. The Rays also pulled within one game of New York for the East lead after a 3-2 win over Baltimore on Sunday.

The current standings would pit the Rangers against the Rays in an AL division series. A potential Game 1 would likely feature the same pitching matchup as will occur in Monday’s series opener. Lee has given Texas the ace its rotation lacked since arriving in a July 9 trade, while Price can become the first AL starter to 16 victories. Price has never faced Lee, but the former No. 1 overall draft pick knows he’s in for a challenge. Price didn’t have his best stuff last Monday, but he had enough to defeat Detroit. He gave up two runs, five hits and walked four while striking out nine over five innings in the 6-3 victory, becoming the first pitcher in Tampa Bay history to win 15 games in a season.

The New York Mets will face some unfamiliar opponents on their road trip, but it should be a good chance to pick up some victories. The Mets will begin a four-game series Monday night when they face the Houston Astros for the first time in 2010, after dominating the season series last year. New York is starting a seven-game trip against Houston and Pittsburgh - the only NL teams it has yet to face this season. The Mets have won five straight over the Astros since losing the first meeting of 2009, while the Pirates own the worst record in baseball and are on pace for 54 victories. The last six-game win streak for New York over Houston was July 12-27, 1985.

The current run of dominance began when Monday’s probable starter Jonathon Niese earned a victory in his first career outing against the Astros. Niese allowed one run in seven innings of a 10-3 victory last July 25. That’s also exactly what the left-hander has done in each of his last two starts though he has failed to record a decision in either of them - a 7-5 loss at Philadelphia on Aug. 6 and Wednesday’s 6-2 defeat to Colorado. Niese’s opponent will also be a southpaw in Wandy Rodriguez, who is 6-1 with a 1.79 ERA over his last nine outings. He’s yielded two earned runs in his last 28 1-3 innings over four starts with 32 strikeouts in that span.

The San Diego Padres took two of three from their closest pursuers in the NL West to kick off a 10-game road trip. They know they can’t afford to get complacent as they begin what should be an easier leg of the trip. Fresh off one of their biggest series of the season, the first-place Padres head to Wrigley Field on Monday night for the first of four against the disappointing Chicago Cubs. San Diego has won six of seven, and its latest series was perhaps the most significant sign that baseball’s biggest surprise team doesn’t intend on fading. The Padres split a pair of one-run contests at wild-card leading San Francisco, then dropped their division rivals 3 1/2 games back Sunday with an emphatic 8-2 victory over two-time reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum. San Diego has won nine of 11 against the Giants.

Chicago had dropped 14 of 16 after losing its opener at division-leading St. Louis on Friday, but came back strong over the weekend. Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez homered in a 3-2 win Saturday, and Lee went deep twice Sunday in a 9-7 victory. Lee was removed with lower back stiffness as the Cubs led 8-1 in the fourth inning, though manager Lou Piniella said he would have kept him in had the game been closer at that point. Chicago’s bullpen surrendered five runs in the ninth to provide a scare Sunday, and that’s where this series could be won or lost. The Padres’ 2.68 bullpen ERA is on pace to be the majors’ best since the 2003 Dodgers’ 2.46 ERA, while the 4.74 ERA of the Cubs’ relief corps is the fourth-worst in baseball.

Shaun Marcum had trouble while losing his last two starts to the highest-scoring teams in the majors. He should find things easier against one of baseball’s worst offenses. Marcum looks to get back on track Monday night when the Toronto Blue Jays open a three-game road set against the punchless Oakland Athletics. The right-hander went 3-0 with a 2.04 ERA in his final three outings of July before going 0-2 with an 11.70 ERA in two starts this month against the New York Yankees and Boston. Marcum allowed a season-high eight runs in four-plus innings - including a career-high four home runs - Wednesday in a 10-1 loss to the Red Sox.

Oakland is tied with Seattle for the fewest homers in the majors with 70, and its 465 runs scored are fifth-fewest in baseball. Marcum improved to 2-1 with a 3.54 ERA in five starts against the Athletics by yielding one run in 6 1-3 innings of a 9-3 home victory May 2. The Athletics are returning home after a dismal 1-5 trip in which they totaled 11 runs and batted .209 with 41 strikeouts. Left fielder Conor Jackson, sidelined since June 30 with a right hamstring injury, will likely be activated at some point on this seven-game homestand. He may be less likely to provide Oakland the offensive boost it needs, as he batted a middling .267 with four RBIs in his first 14 games after being acquired from Arizona in June and has homered twice since the start of 2009.
