The Ottawa Senators were able to bounce back when their team-record winning streak ended last weekend. The Washington Capitals, however, will likely be in for a challenge as they try to do the same. Coming off their first defeat in a month, the Capitals look to avoid a fourth consecutive road loss to the Senators on Thursday night in a matchup of the two hottest teams in the Eastern Conference. Three wins shy of matching the NHL record for consecutive victories, Washington had its franchise-high 14-game winning streak snapped Wednesday in a 6-5 overtime loss at Montreal. The Capitals hadn’t lost since falling 7-4 at Tampa Bay on Jan. 12.

Washington didn’t go quietly, scoring three third-period goals to force overtime before the Canadiens won it with 8 seconds left in the extra session. Despite the final outcome, the Capitals have earned points in 18 of 19 games to increase their total to a league-best 89. Ottawa (34-22-4) had its team-record 11-game winning streak snapped in a 5-0 loss at Toronto on Saturday, but bounced back Tuesday at home, beating Calgary 3-2. Even though both streaks are over, that won’t take much luster off this matchup of top contenders.

Their Northeast Division lead gone, the Buffalo Sabres are trying to close out their final two games before the Olympic break on a positive note. Visiting the red-hot Carolina Hurricanes might not be the best way for the Sabres to get back on track. Buffalo will try to avoid its longest losing streak in two seasons Thursday night when it faces a Hurricanes team that’s won seven of nine. The Sabres tied Washington atop the Eastern Conference with a 7-2 victory at Phoenix on Jan. 18, but with a 2-7-2 record since, Buffalo has lost its double-digit division lead over Ottawa, which has won 12 of 13 to forge a first-place tie.

Any sense of urgency coach Lindy Ruff expected from the Sabres on Tuesday against Boston was missing, as they allowed two first-period goals en route to a 3-2 overtime loss. The Sabres, who host Western Conference-leading San Jose on Saturday in their final game prior to the Olympics, will try to snap a six-game road losing streak with their first game at RBC Center since ending Carolina’s franchise-record 12-game home winning streak with a 5-1 victory April 9. The Hurricanes have outscored opponents 17-5 while winning a season-high four straight at home.

While the Tampa Bay Lightning have virtually no chance of winning their first Southeast Division title since 2003-04, reaching the playoffs for the first time in three seasons is a definite possibility. Tampa Bay takes its longest winning streak in more than two years into Thursday night’s home game against a Boston Bruins team trying to build momentum following a near historic losing streak. Despite a 7-1-1 record since Jan. 19, Tampa Bay still trails East-leading Washington by more than 20 points in the division race. The Lightning, though, have won four in a row—their longest win streak since a five-game run Nov. 7-16, 2007—to move into playoff position.

They’ll have a good chance to make their first postseason appearance since 2006-07 if Antero Niittymaki continues his solid play in net. Niittymaki is 7-0-1 with a 1.09 goals-against average in his last eight starts after making 39 saves in Tuesday’s 3-1 victory over Vancouver. Niittymaki, who has started Tampa Bay’s last four games, hasn’t faced the Bruins this season and is 0-4-1 with a 4.39 GAA in five career starts against them. Mike Smith stopped 66 of 71 shots as the Lightning and Bruins split two meetings this season.

If the Detroit Red Wings could play as well against the rest of the NHL as they have versus the San Jose Sharks, they might not be battling for a playoff spot. The Red Wings look to snap their three-game losing streak by sweeping the four-game season series with a fifth consecutive victory overall against the Western Conference-leading Sharks on Thursday night at Joe Louis Arena. San Jose has the second-most points in the NHL, but it’s recorded just one against Detroit this season. The Sharks have been outscored 10-4 while going 0-2-1 against the Red Wings, who are two points out of the final playoff spot in the West.

Detroit, which hasn’t swept a season series from the Sharks since 1996-97, has also won three straight at home against San Jose. After battling for the best regular-season record in the conference the past two seasons, these teams could be headed for a possible first-round playoff matchup come April With former Detroit assistant Todd McLellan the head coach in San Jose, the teams play a similar type of game. For this season, at least, it’s been the Red Wings who’ve managed to play it better.

The Vancouver Canucks’ epic run of road games has become a problem, especially on offense. A meeting with the struggling Florida Panthers could solve their scoring issues. The Canucks try to avoid a fourth loss in five games Thursday night in their only meeting of the season with the punchless Panthers. Vancouver entered an NHL-record stretch of 14 consecutive road games in strong fashion, winning six in a row by outscoring opponents 21-10. The Canucks continued that momentum by opening their road swing with a 5-3 victory over Toronto on Jan. 30. However, they’ve since lost three of four, including Tuesday’s 3-1 defeat at Tampa Bay.

Scoring has suddenly become an issue for Vancouver, among the league leaders with 185 goals. The Canucks have totaled four goals in the three defeats on this trip, and their only victory in February was Saturday’s 3-2 shootout win at Boston. The Canucks’ top line of Daniel Sedin, Henrik Sedin and Alex Burrows has accounted for no goals and one assist in the last four games after powering the club’s 14-2-2 run by totaling 34 goals and 57 assists. Henrik Sedin’s four-game scoring drought is a season high, but he still ranks among the league leaders with 78 points and his 25 goals tie him with Burrows for the team lead.

If the Dallas Stars are going to head into the Olympic break with some momentum, they’ll need to show some improvement on the road. Visiting the struggling Calgary Flames after the acquisition of Kari Lehtonen could help. The Stars might have Lehtonen in net Thursday night as they try for their second road victory in almost a month when they face the Flames. Dallas is among the worst road teams in the league, going 8-15-7 while dropping 13 of its last 14—with its only victory coming at NHL-worst Edmonton on Jan. 22.

The Stars made a move Tuesday in an attempt to solve those problems, acquiring Lehtonen from Atlanta for defenseman Ivan Vishnevskiy and a fourth-round pick in June’s draft. Lehtonen hasn’t played this season following two back surgeries, but he was recalled Sunday from a conditioning stint with Chicago of the AHL, going 1-1-2 with a 2.67 goals-against average. Lehtonen went 94-83-17 with a 2.87 GAA for the Thrashers, setting franchise records for wins and shutouts. Turco made 37 saves Tuesday in losing 4-3 in a shootout to Chicago in the opener of a three-game trip. He is 2-10-3 with a 3.64 GAA in 15 road games, while Auld has won once in his last eight away from home.

The Los Angeles Kings had to know their streak was going to end eventually. To keep their spirits up, the Edmonton Oilers must have a similar belief. With the longest winning streak in franchise history having been snapped, the Kings return home Wednesday night to face an Oilers team that’s trying to end a franchise-record 11-game road skid. Los Angeles had its nine-game run snapped Monday night, losing 4-2 at Anaheim. The Kings fell short after rallying from a three-goal deficit to beat Detroit 4-3 two days earlier.

Los Angeles now plays two games at home before the Olympic break. The Kings, winners of four straight at Staples Center, will first face a team with the league’s worst road record. Edmonton lost 3-2 to the Ducks on Wednesday, extending its skid and dropping to 7-19-2 away from home. The Oilers have matched their longest road winless streak, set in 1990-91 when they went 0-7 with four ties. Edmonton hasn’t won away from Rexall Place since beating St. Louis 5-3 on Dec. 11—also the last time the Oilers have scored more than four goals in a game.

With the longest winning streak in the NBA this season and the league’s best record, the Cleveland Cavaliers look pretty unbeatable at the moment. Then again, they looked that way to everyone but the Orlando Magic last spring. Cleveland can tie its franchise record with a 13th straight win Thursday night against the Magic, who visit Quicken Loans Arena for the first time since stunning LeBron James and the Cavaliers in last season’s Eastern Conference finals.

James won his first MVP award last season while leading Cleveland to a league-best 66-16 record, but Orlando shocked the Cavaliers in six games before losing to the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA finals. Little has changed in 2009-10. James leads the league in scoring and has Cleveland six games ahead of the Magic for the East’s best record heading into the teams’ second meeting since late May. James had 36 points in a 102-93 win at Orlando on Nov. 11. Cleveland has won 21 of 22 at home. James has been busy lately aside from averaging 38.3 points in his last three games. He and Olympic teammate Dwight Howard joined forces for a Super Bowl commercial, and they’ll be playing together for the fourth time on the East All-Star squad Sunday in Dallas.

The San Antonio Spurs haven’t done a good job of taking advantage of teams playing without their stars on this road trip. That’s a luxury the Spurs won’t have Thursday night when they take on Carmelo Anthony and the Denver Nuggets in the final NBA game before the All-Star break. San Antonio has not played like a title contender in splitting the first four games of this trip. The Spurs have beaten Sacramento and the Clippers
and suffered losses to Portland and the Lakers.

What is especially troubling is that the Trail Blazers played without Brandon Roy and the Lakers were without Kobe Bryant as well as Andrew Bynum on Monday in their 101-89 victory. There was a chance that the Spurs may have caught a break and not seen Anthony for Denver. Anthony, though, returned after missing eight games with a sprained left ankle and scored 19 points in 30 minutes of a 127-91 rout of Dallas on Tuesday. Denver beat San Antonio 103-89 without Anthony on Jan. 31, as Kenyon Martin had 27 points and 11 rebounds and Chauncey Billups added 25 points and 11 assists. This game could be even easier for the Nuggets since Anthony feels he is showing no ill effects from the ankle.
