The Pittsburgh Pirates’ lifeless offense resurfaced over the weekend, pounding out more hits than it had produced in consecutive games in nearly 35 years. There’s reason to believe those bats can stay hot in the opener of a four-game home set Monday night against the Milwaukee Brewers. Pittsburgh went into the All-Star break as both the majors’ worst-hitting and lowest-scoring team, and Friday’s 5-2 loss to Houston seemed to indicate little would change in the second half. Surprisingly, the Pirates’ offense busted out of its doldrums as the weekend progressed. Pittsburgh had a season-high 17 hits in Saturday’s 12-6 win, then surpassed that total Sunday with 19 hits in a 9-0 rout. The 36 hits were the most in a two-game stretch by the Pirates since they amassed 39 on Sept. 16 and 17, 1975 - including a record seven-hit effort by second baseman Rennie Stennett in a 22-0 rout of the Cubs.

The surge, though, came with a negative development that could hurt Pittsburgh against the Brewers. Andrew McCutchen, the Pirates’ leaders in runs, hits and steals, left Sunday’s game with a sprained neck after making a diving catch in the eighth. Russell said his center fielder would be evaluated Monday. McCutchen is a .326 hitter with five homers and 15 RBIs in 20 games against Milwaukee, though his five RBIs in three contests at Miller Park before the break went for naught. The Brewers swept that set, winning all three games by one run. The Pirates might find their chances better with Chris Capuano taking the mound for Milwaukee. The left-hander, who will be filling in for the injured Doug Davis, lasted 3 2-3 innings in his only start of the season back on June 3. Capuano, who has since made seven relief appearances, is back in the majors for the first time since 2007.

Losing four straight at home to a last-place club couldn’t have sent the Texas Rangers into the All-Star break on a worse note, but they quickly bounced back in one of baseball’s toughest places to win. The Detroit Tigers hope their own home-field advantage can help them move past a woeful start to the second half. The Tigers’ losing streak hit five with a stunning four-game road sweep, but they’ll look to build on the AL’s best home record Monday night in the first of three against first-place Texas. The Rangers limped into the break with the memory of four consecutive home losses to Baltimore fresh in their minds, but a few days off seemed to refresh the AL West leaders. They opened the second half by taking three of four from Boston at Fenway Park, capping the series victory with a 4-2 win Sunday. Texas got strong starting pitching throughout the series and plenty of offense from Nelson Cruz, who went 9 for 17 and had an RBI double in the finale.

Despite the impressive performance in that road set, Texas might have a tough time in Detroit. The Tigers have won seven consecutive series in their home park.Detroit is 32-13 at Comerica, but that’s not to say the Tigers are coming in on a high note. They scored eight runs in losing four straight at Cleveland to begin the second half, culminating in a 7-2 defeat Sunday that dropped Jim Leyland’s club to 16-29 on the road. Magglio Ordonez and Miguel Cabrera went a combined 5 for 29 against the Indians, but they and the rest of Detroit’s lineup may be primed for a turnaround Monday. Scott Feldman has struggled throughout this season, and he was particularly bad in his last two outings against the Tigers. He gave up six runs and 10 hits over 2 1-3 innings of a 13-5 loss July 29, then surrendered eight runs - four earned - over 3 2-3 innings in an 8-4 defeat April 24. Cabrera is 4 for 7 against Feldman. The right-hander did manage to go into the break on a relatively high note, holding the Orioles to two runs over seven innings of a 7-6, 10-inning loss July 9.

The St. Louis Cardinals are glad to be back atop the NL Central standings. Manager Tony La Russa is even more satisfied with his team’s record. The division-leading Cardinals look to win six straight for the first time in two seasons Monday night when they open a four-game set against a Philadelphia Phillies team that’s lost its last three road series. Trailing Cincinnati by one game coming out of the All-Star break, St. Louis leapfrogged the Reds in the standings Sunday with a 5-4 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Rookie Allen Craig - starting at first base for Albert Pujols - drove in three runs, and Matt Holliday had the game-winning single in the ninth inning as the Cardinals scored five times in the final two frames. The last time St. Louis was 11 games above .500 was last season when it finished a division-best 91-71.

Looking to snap a four-game home losing streak to Philadelphia and win six straight for the first time since Sept. 23-28, 2008, the Cardinals will give the ball to Blake Hawksworth. The right-hander, who is 2-2 with a 4.97 ERA in five starts this season, went 5 1-3 innings in a 4-2 win at Houston on July 11, giving up two runs and seven hits. This will be Hawksworth’s first start against Philadelphia. He is 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA in two relief appearances versus the Phillies this season. Philadelphia, making its first visit to Busch Stadium since May 4-5, 2009, has lost seven of nine on the road after dropping three of four to the Chicago Cubs. The Phillies hit seven homers in the series but batted just .232. Philadelphia will look to get back on track with Kyle Kendrick on the mound. The right-hander, who threw one inning of scoreless relief in Thursday’s 12-6 loss to the Cubs, is 4-0 with a 1.67 ERA in four career starts versus St. Louis. He surrendered six hits in seven innings of a 4-0 victory over the visiting Cardinals on May 5.

Facing the team with the worst record in the majors might help Tampa Bay bounce back from a losing series against the club with the best. The Rays hope to do so while trying for a fifth straight road win over the Baltimore Orioles on Monday night. Tampa Bay missed its chance to gain ground on AL East-leading New York by losing two of three to the Yankees over the weekend. Despite being three games behind New York, the Rays have won 11 of 15 overall and hope a visit to Baltimore will help them regain some momentum. The Rays have won nine of 11 against the Orioles, including five of six this season. Tampa Bay swept a three-game set at Baltimore from April 12-14. Carlos Pena, 6 for 10 with two homers and six RBIs in the last two games, is batting .360 with two home runs and seven RBIs against the Orioles this season. After the Yankees roughed up All-Star starter David Price for seven runs in the finale, the Rays hope Wade Davis can continue his success against the Orioles while trying to build on his first victory since May 29.

Davis, 0-5 with a 6.32 ERA in his previous six starts, allowed two runs and four hits in seven innings of a 5-2 win over Cleveland on July 8. The right-hander has allowed one run while striking out 13 in 16 innings to win both of his career starts against the Orioles. Davis recorded his only complete game by yielding four hits and striking out 10 in a 3-0 win at Baltimore on Sept. 17. After being swept at home by Toronto, the Orioles counter with Chris Tillman as he tries to follow up the best outing of his young career. In his return from Triple-A Norfolk, Tillman took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and outpitched Cliff Lee in his Rangers debut, allowing one unearned run and two hits in 7 1-3 innings of a 6-1 win at Texas on July 10. The 21-year-old Tillman had an 8.40 ERA in his previous four starts this season. The right-hander is 0-1 in two starts against Tampa Bay, but he has a 2.84 ERA in those games.

7:10 pm EDT Mon Jul 19, 2010

The Cincinnati Reds are the most productive offensive team in the NL, but their bats have been silent lately as they’ve been shut out three times in five games. The Washington Nationals can certainly relate. Both clubs will be trying to bounce back from 1-0 defeats, with Cincinnati’s Johnny Cueto looking to extend Washington’s streak of 21 straight scoreless innings Monday night at Great American Ball Park. Cincinnati tops the league with 448 runs, a big reason it’s in close contention with St. Louis for the NL Central lead. The Reds, though, didn’t score in their final 21 innings before the All-Star break, losing two 1-0 games at Philadelphia that were part of a four-game skid to close the first half. They returned to action with back-to-back victories over Colorado, but the Rockies scored the only run Sunday as the Reds stranded 10 runners while getting blanked for the 11th time.

Cincinnati’s offense may have suffered from the absence of All-Star third baseman Scott Rolen, who was sidelined the last two games due to an illness. It’s unclear if Rolen will be ready to play Monday in the opener of this four-game series. The core of Washington’s lineup has been intact, but not productive, during the team’s slow start to the second half. The Nationals lost two of three at Florida despite limiting the Marlins to three runs and 14 hits. After Stephen Strasburg won 4-0 on Friday, the Nationals were shut out in the last two games of the series, stranding 19 runners and going 0 for 18 with men in scoring position. That may bode well for Cueto as the right-hander makes his first start in 11 days following a strong first half. While Cueto was brilliant heading into the All-Star break, going 2-0 with a 0.67 ERA in his last four starts, he’s hoping to avoid a repeat of last year, when he posted a 5.81 ERA in 12 starts after the Midsummer Classic.

The Florida Marlins won two of three upon returning from the All-Star break thanks to some outstanding pitching, which helped overcome some minimal contributions at the plate. It’s unlikely they’ll be able to count on their lineup for much on Monday night. Ubaldo Jimenez takes the mound at Sun Life Stadium for the first time since starting the All-Star game for the NL, and he’ll be looking to build on a stellar pre-break performance that he hopes put his brief struggles to rest. Jimenez was on pace for one of the great pitching seasons in major league history, but his 1.15 ERA on June 17 nearly doubled over his next three starts. He allowed 17 runs in 17 1-3 innings as his ERA jumped to 2.27, but closed the first half with a flourish. The right-hander gave up a run and three hits over eight innings in a 4-2 win over St. Louis on July 8, then tossed two scoreless innings in Tuesday’s Midsummer Classic to show he’s ready to give the Rockies another second-half boost.

Jimenez has been at his best on the road, where he has a 1.23 ERA in 10 starts, and a win Monday would be his career-high 16th. He’s faced the Marlins just twice, and an Aug. 1, 2008, outing at then-named Dolphin Stadium was his most recent in the series. He held Florida to two hits over seven scoreless innings in a 5-2 victory. The Marlins’ pulled off a difficult feat over the weekend by winning a series in which they scored a total of three runs. Florida bounced back from Friday’s 4-0 loss to Washington with 2-0 and 1-0 victories, with Gaby Sanchez’s fifth-inning RBI double accounting for the only run Sunday. A big part of the Marlins’ offensive drought can be attributed to Hanley Ramirez’s downturn. The three-time All-Star doesn’t have an RBI or an extra-base hit in nine consecutive games. The Rockies only managed four runs in their return from the break while losing two of three in Cincinnati. Like the Marlins’ win, though, all it took was one run to avoid a sweep Sunday as Chris Iannetta’s sixth-inning home run held up.

The Chicago Cubs have enjoyed some success at the plate recently, but sustaining it will require improved play against their own division. The Cubs play the first of nine straight against NL Central rivals when they open a three-game series with the Houston Astros on Monday. Chicago took three of four from Philadelphia over the weekend, opening the series with a 12-6 win Thursday and closing with an 11-6 victory Sunday - the Cubs’ seventh win in 11 games. They homered twice off Roy Halladay and finished with 14 hits, including three each by Tyler Colvin and Starlin Castro. Chicago has averaged 6.1 runs in its last 11 contests - up significantly from its previous average of 3.8 per game. Despite the recent success, the Cubs remain 9 1/2 games behind NL Central-leading St. Louis, which visits Wrigley Field next weekend. To close the gap, Chicago will have to improve upon its 15-25 record against the NL Central, including a 2-4 mark against Houston.

Third baseman Aramis Ramirez went 0 for 7 in the final two games against the Phillies, but is still hitting .400 in his last 10. For the Cubs to continue their recent success it would also help if Carlos Silva could reverse his decline. Silva opened the season 8-0 with a 2.93 ERA, but is 1-3 with a 4.50 ERA in his last six starts - five of them losses for the Cubs. He allowed six runs and six hits in 1 1-3 innings of a 7-0 loss to the Dodgers on July 10, when he was ejected for arguing balls and strikes. The right-hander’s terrific start to 2010 included a 7-2 win over the Astros on April 16, when he limited Houston to two unearned runs in seven innings. Houston dropped two of three at league-worst Pittsburgh over the weekend, including a 9-0 loss Sunday, when Roy Oswalt left after four innings with a bruised left ankle and the Astros totaled three hits - all singles - and failed to get a runner in scoring position. The loss was the fifth in six road games for Houston. Three of those defeats were shutouts.

Coming off a successful series against the team atop the AL Central, the Minnesota Twins hope to continue their winning run when facing the club at the bottom of the division. The Twins look for a fourth straight victory while trying to prevent the Cleveland Indians from matching a season high with their fifth consecutive win Monday night at Target Field. Minnesota moved into a second-place tie with Detroit, 1 1/2 games behind division-leading Chicago, after winning the final three of a four-game weekend series against the White Sox. The Twins also received some help when the Indians swept a four-game series with the Tigers. The Twins have won four of six against the Indians this season, including two of three at Target Field in April.Delmon Young’s two-run single capped a four-run ninth inning in Minnesota’s 7-6 victory over Chicago on Sunday.

Young, who drove in three runs Sunday, is 8 for 20 with five RBIs in his last five games. Michael Cuddyer had three hits in the finale and is 7 for 13 in his last three games. He is batting .308 with a homer and four RBIs against Cleveland this season. Minnesota’s Scott Baker hopes some rest over the All-Star break will help provide relief for an inflamed elbow as he takes the mound Monday. The right-hander, who has a 6.56 ERA while losing three of his last four starts, gave up five runs in six innings of an 8-1 loss at Toronto on July 8. Baker went 4-0 with a 1.57 ERA in five starts against the Indians in 2009, but he lost his only previous game against them this season, allowing six runs and 10 hits in 5 2-3 innings of an 8-1 home loss April 22. Two of Jhonny Peralta’s 11 hits against Baker have left the park. The Indians third baseman hit a three-run inside-the-park home run in Sunday’s 7-2 win over the Tigers. Peralta, 6 for 18 with a homer against Minnesota this season, had missed the previous three games with the flu.

Yunel Escobar was struggling through a dismal season in the NL, but the shortstop provided an immediate boost to the Toronto Blue Jays since they acquired him Wednesday. That’s one reason why the Blue Jays will be looking for a fourth consecutive road victory to begin the second half as they open a three-game series with the reeling Kansas City Royals on Monday night. Escobar was maligned for giving an inconsistent effort in Atlanta, where he batted .238 without a home run in 75 games this year after hitting a career-high 14 last season. But the Blue Jays were thinking about the future when they acquired the promising Cuban from the Braves for veteran Alex Gonzalez. It certainly seems like a good move after Escobar went 6 for 13 with five RBIs during a three-game weekend sweep at Baltimore. His first homer of the season - Toronto’s MLB-leading 140th - and first career grand slam came in Sunday’s 10-1 victory.

The Blue Jays had lost 14 of 18 on the road before beginning a 10-game trip against the Orioles, and they may be able to keep the momentum going in Kansas City. Baltimore is the only AL team with a home record worse than the Royals, who fell to 18-24 at Kauffman Stadium as Oakland completed a three-game weekend sweep. Kansas City has allowed 48 runs while losing six straight overall. The Royals scored five in the ninth inning Sunday, but it wasn’t enough to prevent a 9-6 defeat. Kyle Davies hasn’t pitched during the Royals’ skid, and he’ll attempt to steady the staff while making his first start since July 7. The right-hander struggled through an inconsistent first half, but posted a 2.63 ERA in two July outings with Kansas City winning both games. Davies dropped to 1-2 against Toronto after allowing four runs in six-plus innings of a 4-3 defeat on April 20. Aaron Hill, Vernon Wells and Lyle Overbay have homered off Davies, with Overbay going 5 for 8 with two doubles in the matchup.

9:40 pm EDT Mon Jul 19, 2010

The second half of the season didn’t get off to as good a start as the New York Mets would have wanted, but three key players making their first appearances since the All-Star break will give the club reason for optimism. Mike Pelfrey takes the mound for the Mets in the opener of a three-game series at the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday, as Luis Castillo and Jose Reyes are expected to return from injuries. Pelfrey, who leads New York in wins, had his scheduled start Saturday pushed back after he developed a stiff neck while on the plane to San Francisco two days prior. The additional rest may benefit the right-hander, who has stumbled over the last month, going 1-3 with a 7.52 ERA over his last five starts. He failed to make it out of the fifth inning of his last three outings, and lasted a season-low four against Atlanta on July 10, allowing four runs and 12 hits in a 4-0 loss.

Pelfrey is 0-4 with a 5.22 ERA in five starts against the Diamondbacks, including a 7.16 ERA in three losses at Arizona. Diamondbacks first baseman Adam LaRoche is 6 for 7 with two doubles and two walks against Pelfrey. While Pelfrey returns to the mound looking for a fresh start, his teammates would probably like to start their second half over after losing three of four to San Francisco to drop five games behind the Braves for the NL East lead. The Mets avoided the sweep Sunday by salvaging the finale 4-3 in 10 innings - only their second win in eight games. Ike Davis drove in the game-winner on a double in the top of the 10th and the Mets threw out the potential tying run at home plate, although replays showed the Giants’ Travis Ishikawa appeared to be safe. New York scored eight runs and batted .198 over the four games, getting shut out twice. David Wright went 3 for 15, though ht did hit a solo home run in Sunday’s game.

10:05 pm EDT Mon Jul 19, 2010

A flurry of injuries may finally be catching up with the Boston Red Sox, who sputtered offensively while losing three of four at home to begin the second half. Few teams are running as smoothly as the Oakland Athletics, who will be looking for a sixth straight victory as the Red Sox begin a 10-game West Coast trip in northern California on Monday night. With nine losses in 12 games, the Red Sox have slipped 6 1/2 games behind New York and 3 1/2 behind Tampa Bay in the AL East, and appear desperate for reinforcements in their depleted lineup. Dustin Pedroia, Victor Martinez, Jacoby Ellsbury, Jason Varitek and Jeremy Hermida all remain on the disabled list - not to mention starting pitchers Josh Beckett and Clay Buchholz.

The Red Sox still lead the majors in runs, but have plenty of concerns after totaling 11 in four home games against Texas over the weekend. Boston would have been swept if not for a two-out comeback in the ninth inning of Saturday’s victory. Red Sox hitters struck out 14 times in Sunday’s 4-2 defeat. Meanwhile, Oakland has piled up 40 runs during its season-best five-game winning streak. Kevin Kouzmanoff had seven RBIs in a three-game sweep at Kansas City over the weekend, including a home run in Sunday’s 9-6 win. The A’s winning streak began with Ben Sheets on the mound, as the right-hander limited the Angels to two hits in six shutout innings during a 15-1 victory on July 10. Sheets, who missed all of 2009 following elbow surgery, has been mostly mediocre in his first season with Oakland, but his name has been mentioned in trade rumors after his strong conclusion to the first half.

The San Francisco Giants’ starting rotation has been dominant since the All-Star break. Lately, so has rookie left-hander Madison Bumgarner. In his first appearance of the second half, Bumgarner tries to win his third straight start Monday when the surging Giants open a three-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, who are hoping a healthy lineup and a return to Chavez Ravine will help them snap a four-game slide. San Francisco, which has won nine of 11 to move one game ahead of the Dodgers in the NL West standings, has benefited from some spectacular starting pitching since the All-Star break. Tim Lincecum, Barry Zito, Matt Cain and Jonathan Sanchez each went at least seven innings and posted a combined 1.16 ERA as the Giants took three of four from the New York Mets in a series that ended with Sunday’s 4-3, 10-inning loss.

With his team beginning a seven-game trip, manager Bruce Bochy will look for another solid outing from Bumgarner, who is 2-0 with a 0.64 ERA in his last two starts. Making his fifth major league start, the 20-year-old struck out a career-high six and allowed one run in six-plus innings of a 6-2 victory at Washington on July 11. Bumgarner, who has never started against Los Angeles, struck out two in a scoreless inning of relief in a 12-1 loss at Dodger Stadium on Sept. 19. Bumgarner faces a Los Angeles team that’s going for its first win since the All-Star break. Dodgers relievers allowed five runs in the final two innings of Sunday’s 5-4 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals, with closer Jonathan Broxton suffering his third blown save after letting two runs score in 1 1-3 innings of work. With Manny Ramirez, James Loney and Russell Martin all nursing injuries and questionable for Monday, the Dodgers will hope for a solid effort from James McDonald, who is expected to be called up from Triple-A Albuquerque to make his first appearance this season.

10:10 pm EDT Mon Jul 19, 2010

The Chicago White Sox have not dealt with much adversity over the last month. After a rough weekend, however, they will need to show some resiliency. Mired in their worst losing stretch in three months, the AL Central-leading White Sox look to avoid a fourth straight defeat Monday night against the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field. Chicago is 26-5 since June 9, and had won nine a row before dropping the final three of a four-game series at Minnesota. The White Sox blew a three-run, ninth-inning lead in a 7-6 loss Sunday. Chicago, which has a 1 1/2-game lead over Minnesota and Detroit, has not lost four straight since April 15-18. Facing Seattle could help the White Sox get back on track. Though the Mariners snapped a four-game skid with a 2-1, 10-inning victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday, they are 3-12 in July and dropped three one-run games at Chicago from April 23-25.Seattle is batting .220 and averaging 2.8 runs this month.

Chicago might need struggling second baseman Gordon Beckham to stay hot. Beckham had four hits Sunday and is 12 for 18 with six RBIs in his last five games to raise his average from .208 to .237. Beckham is 6 for 40 lifetime against the Mariners. White Sox right fielder Carlos Quentin is 11 for 26 with 15 RBIs in his last eight games, but could be out of the lineup for the series opener after leaving Sunday’s game with a bruised hand. Chicago rookie Daniel Hudson makes his second start of the season and first ever against Seattle. The right-hander hopes to be a permanent replacement for the injured Jake Peavy, but needs to improve after he allowed five runs in four innings of a 15-5 win over Kansas City on July 11. Seattle counters with David Pauley, who will face the White Sox for the first time.
