The Cleveland Cavaliers have every reason to be especially careful with LeBron James’ ankle injury. At least his condition doesn’t seem to be nearly as bad as Tony Parker’s. The Cavaliers may be without James again as they try to reach 50 wins Monday night in a matchup with a San Antonio Spurs team that faces the possibility of missing Parker for the rest of the regular season. Coach Mike Brown said James might sit out a second consecutive game after twisting his right ankle slightly in Cleveland’s 99-92 win over Detroit on Friday night. Brown insisted the decision to keep James out of a 92-85 loss to Milwaukee the following evening was for rest and had nothing to do with the star’s ankle.

James, though, was clearly limping as he walked to the bench in the first quarter and again to the locker room at halftime. Brown said James could have played if needed, but the reigning league MVP watched from the bench as the Cavaliers had a six-game winning streak snapped. James, averaging a league-best 30.0 points, was replaced by Jawad Williams. Antawn Jamison had 30 points and Delonte West added a season-high 27, but Cleveland couldn’t overcome James’ absence while also missing Shaquille O’Neal. After playing six of nine on the road, the Cavs return home to try to become the league’s first team to win 50 games.

The New York Knicks are in the midst of another miserable season. A few of their bright spots, however, have come against an Atlanta Hawks team that is headed toward the playoffs. Coming off the worst 3-point shooting performance in league history, the Knicks look to bounce back with a third straight victory over the Hawks on Monday night at Madison Square Garden. Sitting near the bottom of the Eastern Conference and set to miss the playoffs for a sixth consecutive season, New York has lost 12 of 14.The Knicks, however, have had little trouble against Atlanta recently. The Hawks are fourth in the East and trying to catch Orlando for the Southeast Division lead, but New York has taken four of the previous five meetings and the last two this season - both in Atlanta.

The Hawks won 114-101 at MSG on Nov. 11. While New York has shot 51.8 percent and averaged 109.0 points against the Hawks in 2009-10, it will almost certainly need to improve from 3-point range if it wants to take the season series for a second straight time. The Knicks set an NBA record for 3-point futility by missing all 18 attempts in a 113-93 loss to lowly New Jersey on Saturday. That came one night after New York went 3 of 16 from beyond the arc in a 102-96 defeat at Toronto.

Playing their third game in four nights, the injury-plagued Dallas Mavericks could use a trouble-free matchup. Facing the lowly Minnesota Timberwolves could be exactly what the Southwest Division leaders need. Dallas will try to win its 12th straight overall and eighth in a row at Minnesota on Monday night, when the Timberwolves get one of their best players back from suspension. With the NBA’s longest active win streak, the Mavericks have built a five-game division lead over San Antonio and are in close pursuit of the Western Conference-leading Lakers.

Dallas, though, is trying to get healthy for the stretch run. Jason Terry, one of the league’s best off the bench with 16.4 points per game, had facial surgery Friday and could be out another two weeks after getting elbowed in the face by Minnesota’s Corey Brewer in Wednesday’s 112-109 home win. The Mavericks could also be without both of their centers Monday in the final meeting this season with the Timberwolves. Erick Dampier has been sidelined the last 11 games with a dislocated right middle finger, while Brendan Haywood missed the final three quarters of Friday’s win over Sacramento and a 122-116 victory at Chicago on Saturday with lower back tightness.

With three-time All-Star Chris Paul still out and a difficult schedule looming, the New Orleans Hornets’ playoff chances appear to be dwindling. A home game against the lowly Golden State Warriors might be what the team needs to restore its confidence. The Hornets look to avoid losing five straight games for the first time in three years Monday night when they face a Warriors team that has just one road win in the past three months. After making the playoffs each of the past two seasons, New Orleans is just one defeat away from matching last season’s loss total. The Hornets have dropped five of six to drop to 11th place in the Western Conference, and fell under .500 for the first time since Jan. 2 with Friday’s 102-91 loss to San Antonio.

Climbing back into the playoff picture won’t be easy, especially with Paul expected to be out another week. After this game, the Hornets, who are 6-11 since Paul injured his left knee, will be on the road for six of seven with the lone home contest coming against Northwest Division-leading Denver. New Orleans will also face only seven teams with losing records in its final 19 games. The Warriors are one of those sub-.500 teams, and they’ve been experiencing even more problems than the Hornets. Golden State, which is without leading scorer Monta Ellis, has lost the first four contests of a five-game trip and is 1-18 on the road since Dec. 11.

The Memphis Grizzlies have not won at home in five weeks. The way the New Jersey Nets have been playing on the road, the Grizzlies’ woes at FedEx Forum could continue. Memphis tries to avoid its ninth straight home loss Monday night when it faces the Nets, who are looking to win four in a row on the road for the first time in two seasons. Since winning a franchise-record 11 straight at FedEx Forum from Dec. 18-Jan. 25, the Grizzlies have lost nine of 10 there. They defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 95-93 on Feb. 1 in Memphis before dropping their next eight home contests.

A loss Monday would give the Grizzlies their longest home slide since dropping a franchise-record 11 in a row from Feb. 16-March 31, 1996, when the team was based in Vancouver. Facing the Nets would seem to be a good opportunity to snap that skid, but New Jersey has won three straight on the road. The Nets won 113-93 at New York on Saturday, and defeated Boston and Charlotte in their previous two road games.New Jersey missed 12 of its first 13 shots Saturday but rallied from a 16-point first-half deficit to open a five-game trip.

Even with Alex Ovechkin failing to produce at his normal prolific clip, the NHL-leading Washington Capitals have come out of the Olympic break looking poised at making a run at the Stanley Cup. The Dallas Stars, hoping to return to the playoffs after a one-year absence, have not played with the same intensity since the Vancouver Games. Ovechkin and the Capitals look to win their fourth straight overall and their 14th in a row at home Monday night when they face a Stars team trying to avoid its fourth consecutive loss. Washington has looked like a favorite to win the franchise’s first Stanley Cup for much of the season, but it went through a rough stretch a few weeks ago, losing its final three games before the Olympics.

The team has since regrouped, winning its first three contests since the NHL resumed play. The Capitals defeated the New York Rangers 2-0 on Saturday night to extend the club-record home winning streak to 13. Jose Theodore made 30 saves for his first shutout since March 17, and has stopped 53 of 54 shots in two starts since the Olympics. He has been in goal for seven games during the home winning streak, posting a 1.99 goals-against average. This sort of play from Theodore is needed with Ovechkin and linemate Nicklas Backstrom struggling to find the back of the net.

The Los Angeles Kings are closing in on their first playoff appearance in seven seasons, but a recent rough stretch has them determined to improve their play. A visit from the lowly Columbus Blue Jackets could help. The Kings look to avoid a third consecutive loss while trying to hand the visiting Blue Jackets their fifth straight defeat Monday night. Absent from the postseason since 2001-02, Los Angeles is fifth in the Western Conference. However, the Kings are coming off consecutive 4-2 defeats to Nashville and Montreal, giving them four losses in six games since winning a season-high nine in a row.

Los Angeles has not suffered three straight regulation losses since Jan. 7-11. Improving the power play could help Los Angeles, which went 0 of 4 and allowed a short-handed goal Saturday. The Kings, whose 19.3 power-play percentage is among the best in the NHL, went 4 for 26 over the last seven contests. The Kings can get back on track while trying for a third straight win over Columbus. The Blue Jackets, who lost in two of their last three visits to Los Angeles, are 0-2-2 since winning three in a row.
