The Angels have made a significant roster move, hoping that can spur a postseason run. One day after acquiring Dan Haren, one of the most prized pitchers available, Los Angeles hopes to get back into the win column Monday night when it opens a three-game series against the slumping Red Sox. The Angels fell seven games back of AL West-leading Texas with Sunday’s 6-4 loss to the Rangers. Los Angeles, which dropped three of four in Arlington, may have too much ground to make up in the wild-card race, trailing Tampa Bay by nine games. Boston’s best chance to make the postseason seems to be the wild card, as its five games back of the Rays. The Angels received a big lift in their postseason quest Sunday, acquiring Haren from Arizona for Joe Saunders and three other players. Haren, a three-time All-Star, was tied for the NL lead with 141 strikeouts. While Haren isn’t slated to take the mound until Wednesday’s finale, the opener features a solid pitching matchup between the Angels’ Joel Pineiro and Boston’s Clay Buchholz. Both are trying to bounce back from disappointing losses. Pineiro allowed six runs and 11 hits in six innings of Wednesday’s 10-6 loss to the Yankees, his first defeat since June 1. The right-hander was 7-0 with a 2.51 ERA over his previous eight starts. Pineiro, who made 31 relief appearances for Boston in 2007, was a tough-luck loser in his lone start of the season against the Red Sox on May 5, allowing two runs in six innings of a 3-1 setback.
