The Kings went into their current 10-game road swing on a three-game winning streak and haven’t slowed down much. They followed a 1-0 shootout loss at Minnesota on Feb. 1 with a 3-1 win in Edmonton a night later, then got past red-hot Calgary 4-3 in a shootout on Saturday. Los Angeles remains barely on the outside of the Western Conference playoff picture, but it’s starting to build some momentum with 29 games left. Jonathan Quick will be between the pipes Thursday seeking a sixth straight win. He has a 1.74 goals-against average in his last five starts and has three road shutouts since Dec. 13.

Pittsburgh Penguins won four of the first five games they were without Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, a testament to the team’s steady defense and solid depth up front. Suddenly, the absences of Crosby and Malkin are far from their only concerns. An injury to Chris Kunitz and a suspension for Matt Cooke could leave the Penguins without five of their top seven forwards Thursday night as they host the resurgent Los Angeles Kings. Pittsburgh lost its first three games without Crosby and its first contest after Malkin initially went down with a knee injury, but the team didn’t lapse into a prolonged funk. Quick outplayed Marc-Andre Fleury as Los Angeles beat the Penguins 5-2 at Staples Center on Nov. 5, 2009, the first time Kings defenseman Rob Scuderi faced the team he helped win the Stanley Cup five months earlier. This will be Scuderi’s first trip to Pittsburgh as a visitor.
