Potentially being without Scott Rolen for an extended period of time, one such stretch may have started. Cincinnati has emerged as a surprise contender in the NL Central and is one-half game behind St. Louis. The Reds have split their last six games primarily due to a lack of offense, losing three times by a 1-0 score as their starters have gone 2-3 with a 1.58 ERA. The Reds eased past the Nationals in the opener of this four-game set with a 7-2 victory Monday. Cueto pitched six strong innings and had a two-run single, while Jonny Gomes and Miguel Cairo - filling in for Rolen - added solo homers. A late fade by Leake cost him a chance to win back-to-back starts heading into the All-Star break. The rookie was three outs shy of his first complete game with a 7-1 lead July 9 at Philadelphia, but he allowed four runs as the Phillies eventually rallied for a 9-7, 10-inning win. The right-hander defeated Nationals scheduled starter Luis Atilano by holding Washington to an unearned run in seven innings of a 5-1 victory June 5. Atilano has gotten no run support in losing his last two starts, but he also hasn’t pitched well in either outing. The rookie right-hander was reached for four runs and eight hits in 5 1-3 innings of a 7-1 defeat to San Diego on July 8, and the Nationals sent him to Triple-A Syracuse for extra work.
